- This is not a joke or a prank. Growing up to 18 pounds of apples in containers is amazing enough, but even more amazing is they only take up 1 square foot.

May we have an apple tree update? We're curious how well they are doing! :D
Unfortunately him and his wife split, she took the baby and they sold the property, he gets her on the weekends but the apple trees are gone
@@michaelmackinnon9008- Tragic...
@@michaelmackinnon9008 Oh No!
@@michaelmackinnon9008 wait are you serious??🥺
No they didn't split.
The baby looked like she was inadvertently imitating dad with her hand motions. Lol!
We call that "the baby bird".
@@MIgardener Update on these? Are they still around?
Luke how have these trees progressed for you? Still thriving?
Thanks for another great learning experience, Luke. I particularly liked this video because you chose not to edit out the fact that you slightly miscalculated the depth of the hole you dug to plant the apple tree into. Not only did this serve to express the importance of planting depth, but it also served to show that even an old pro doesn't necessarily get it right the first time without having to go back and readjust a little bit. This takes the pressure off of guys like me who are OCD about doing things right the first time. I have been reluctant to plant fruit trees, as badly as I want them, because I felt like I had to be so exact about planting depth. You've shown me that getting it right is not that hard to do. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. You are doing a great service to us wannabe gardeners and orchardists.
AS much as I liked your info for the apple trees. I enjoyed your daughter even more. She is adorable! Thank you
Grandma C.
That is usually how things go ;)
Have you done a follow-up video for the columnar trees? I’d love to know if they performed as expected and fruit quality and taste.
check Gardener Scott . He did this also
I bought a 3 in 1 Cherry tree and I am planning on planting it in a half whiskey barrel, just like yours. I’ve looked everywhere for info on what type of medium to use in a container. Most of the info that I found was for in-ground planting. I’m so glad that I found this video! I’ve been watching your channel for a few months and I’ve found a wealth of information about a wide range of gardening topics. Thank you so much for your willingness to share your expertise and experience with this novice! I’m a farmers granddaughter and I have a passion for growing things, just not a lot of experience. You’re a big help! Thanks 😊
I saw these trees for the first time yesterday at our local plant store. I had never seen them before. Thanks for the education.
Love this, wanted apples but full size trees are just way to much. This is perfect and I appreciate the soil info.
So glad you liked it!
How have the trees been producing for you since this video? Love the content!
I am growing blackberries and strawberries in containers on my front porch entrance. Im hoping everyone feels welcome by being able to walk up and pick fruit. I love this idea!
I literally watched a current video of you and your daughter and she is so grown up! This is a blast from The past. My apple trees are doing much better this year in containers and I’m using a better fertilizer
Great video! Many people have less than ideal soil for fruit trees. Columnar apple trees are not the only trees that do well in pots. My dwarf dorsett golden apple tree topped out at 5 feet a couple of years ago because it is on miniature dwarf rootstock. Dwarf Cherry trees get taller, mine are around 8 feet high. I have a bonanza genetic dwarf peach tree that is said to only reach 5-6 feet. I grow chives and green/walking onions around the sides of the pot.
What soil mix so you have?
@@DaBuDaSak Sorry, I can't remember what soil mix I used 5 years ago. I would recommend a mix of potting soil and compost for anything in pots.
I just recently found your channel and I absolutely LOVE it! As someone who lives in a small space, for the longest time, I thought growing anything but a few herbs was hopeless. You have really inspired me with many different things that I can do with the space that I have. Thanks for all the work you put into your channel! -Shannon
your Lil one stole the show. I love your show I have learned so much. Thank you
She always does!
I just got my first 2 in the ground in Oklahoma. I can't wait to eat yard apples
Going about my day.
MI Gardner: I grew apple trees in containers.
Me: 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Your daughter looks like a cross between a McIntosh and Golden delicious. Glad she’s there for inspiration. Excellent video! Glad to be educated in container columnar apple trees! Looking to get a few this spring. Also, what kind of drainage was there in those whisky barrels? Did you need to drill more holes?
I was delighted with the 87 year old tomato. The apple/barrel seg is inspiring me. I am anxious to move down below and really grow good food. Wickenberg, AZAt 7K feet it is hard to grow anything with a very very short growing season. I had a greenhouse but the winds destroyed it. Love watching your progress. My 1/2 barrel has a gigantic rhubarb 6 years old!
Where did you purchase child? Am wanting for farm
akaram325 you just need to fertilize an egg and BINGO!

Hi Luke
Thank you for including container gardening to your videos.
Thank you :) could you possibly do more videos on container planting Dwarf fruit trees and bushes?
Will do for sure!
yes please do, I could have a container orchard.
Where did you get these containers?
Chippy The Squirrel That's what I'm interested in too! I would love to have a big yard, but that can get pretty pricey, so I'd love to see how someone can maximize growing edibles in small spaces :)
Years ago I bought a book on fruit tree pruning by the Royal Horticultural Society. They recommended summer pruning espaliers by cutting back the arm and repeatedly cutting all the growth along the arm back to about 3 inches long -- to encourage the side growth to become spurs.
Your baby girl is darn cute how she was imitating you on camera. How precious she is! You are such a good Dad! I think they have citrus varieties in columnar form too which would probably suit my central Florida climate.
You have given a wonderful way to grow spples, but, you have the mulch to close to the stem, you need to pull back about two to three inches to prevent rot. thanks for sharing.Blessings! !!!!!
Oh my goodness Luke your little co-host is adorable! Great video as always!
thank you! :)
how are your apples doing?
Ok +1
Im literally just watching the baby for most of the beginning lol
I've been looking around for these trees, and once I see them in person I won't be able to resist!!!
I have a question. I have six raised garden beds, each about 4' x 8'. It grows a lot of food for my small family of four. You have vast gardens. What do you do with all of the excess vegetables. Are you selling to localrestaurants and stores, do you sell at the farmers market?
OMG! MIgardener 2.0:The Baby Geneva gardens Show! SO adorable! You just inspired my hubby's b-day present buying a pair to pot up to frame the garage door! Thank you for another awesome video!
I have a set of these. I have them in large buckets which get put out on my deck each year. They over winter in my garage. I have to say that the squirrels love them and will climb the tree and take bites out of the apples. I need a guard dog! I too live in MI, and they do great!
I used to grow all my fruit tree in wine barrels. I had to get rid of them though. I had massive problems with molds and Termites and the rings rusting away. They were on a concert slab and still got termites. They are a bad Idea in the New Orleans area. So I switched to 25 and 50 Gallon grow bags since they drain better and termites don't eat them. Really wish I could have keep them because the wood looks great. Thanks for the great Idea of Herbs as companion plants in large containers MIgarderner. I normally plant Marigolds around them to help keep pest away. I may have to do small pest repelling herbs, in those large containers also.
I bought 2 of these from Gurney's this year. Came in this afternoon and potting up tomorrow. Looking forward to my first apple.
I picked up 3 end of year clearance for dirt cheap planted them like you did. anything I should do to prep them for winter? (insert winter is coming joke here)
ascarta Make sure they have water and mulch going into winter. Make sure the trunks are protected against sun and varmints. Don't let them get bone dry. Expect one or more to not make it; they're young and didn't have a good growing season this year. Do not be tempted to overwinter them indoors.
Thank goodness there's a replay option. Your little one is so stinkin' cute...I didn't hear a word you said. She stole the show!
Is she adorable or what?!!!! OMG too cute!
I learned that I Want to grow one of those amazing trees.
PLEASE do an update! I am thinking of putting in 4 of these in the fall and want to know how they worked for you.
She is simply adorable! Her cuteness over shadowed everything!
Luke - just found your channel and thank you for the content. I have seen these type of trees in a nearby front yard and always wondered why they were loaded with fruit while my dwarf trees from the hardware store are bare year after year. I am going to give these a shot. Thanks!
So glad you found us and glad you are enjoying it! :)
This is AWESOME news!!! I've been wanting to grow apples in containers for years! Thank you for this info!!! I really enjoy your videos.
What kind of yield are you getting from these. I am thinking of getting them and want to be sure they are worth it.
Used to grow these type of column apples and even pears whilst living in the UK..They're ideal for a small garden with raised beds..
Growing a few myself too in large bin containers. M9 rootstock dwarfs.
are they producing well? would you recommend them?
Really enjoyed this, i dream of this sort of garden also my daughter is just as small and would love to raise her in that sort of environment, please keep doing what you do.
Im a big fan of columner or (urban apple trees). I’ve got four of them. One on each corner of my 10x10 fire pit patio. They look great and I’m waiting til next year to see what they produce.
Would you thin the apple buds out as you would with a regular tree or just let them do their thing?
What kind of containers did you use? Like size and material wise. And could I use these same tips to grow a dwarf apple tree in a container?
I planted one Golden and one Scarlet a couple months ago. They look great. Since your video is a year old I'm curious how yours are doing.
If these turn out I will plant an army of them. 😁
How are yours doing so far, Bobos Curse? Did you plant more? Containers or ground?
I would love to see an update on these! I would love to buy, but I’m tentative b/c of the price. It could be well worth it...
I am so interested to know how these grew?
Don't get too upset about the TROLLS...they use the word "clickbait" to justify their angry posting because they have nothing better to do in life, and don't know how to move on to something else....I think you can name your posts anything you want, and it is really no one else's business. The fact that you take the time to share info tips, and ways to grow is a bonus above whatever the name of the video is. I have been watching you since the early days when you were doing plants and seeds at the living room table, and there isn't much if anything I have watched on here that I haven't liked. Just know there is always going to be opposites who are attracted online, and what they think, is not your issue. Just do what you love doing :) Thanks for all the great videos!
Spot on.keep up the good work
Great video. I am in the same growing zone as you, only in Colorado. I purchased the same barrels yesterday at Costco so I think I will order the apple trees for them. Please wish Sindy a very Happy Mothers Day!
Lowes sells them for quite a while, have about 4 varieties, regular price $39 but can always find on sale or clearance. Just picked up one for $5! Potted!
Max N 😰 I haven’t seen any- are they with green leaves or just roots?
Good to know. I am sure they will be up in price in the coming 2022 season though. No telling these days.
Thanks for the tips. Just got 2 columnar apple trees.
I want to try out planting one of these. This video just proves there is always more to learn. Thanks!!
These apples seem to be for zones 4 thru 8.
I almost remember the awe that everyday experience is for tykes. I can remember a smell from excelsior packing that was in a garage at the end of the block. I was only 3 years old, and nobody knew I was gone, and for some reason, I wandered back to my house that was a few houses away. Little kids are natural explorers. That's a 65 yo memory.
I was busy watching ... your baby! so I have to watch "your " again ! Baby is so sweet & cute !
Answered my own question from last night that your gardens are private. Love your informative videos. I am starting a homestead and love the ideas of the rooting stem fruit trees. I am gathering info from lots of sources. Keep up the good work.
Following up on the winter hardiness - are you planning on moving the containers to the garage or equivalent in winter? I'm imagining that the roots are going to be more susceptible to damage in the containers?
There are some Ultra Patio Dwarf Apple trees available now! You can grow them in containers at least 18 inches diameter or larger. They are on dwarf root stock. Check out Pacific Groves online. They have made it possible to grow many fruit trees in containers as Ultra Dwarf or Super Patio Dwarf trees. 😊 I've bought quite a few Ultra Patio Dwarf fruit varieties from my local Lowes which purchases from Pacific Groves nursery.
Also that baby is just too cute!
DesertGardener I went to their website but it doesn’t look like you can order any trees directly from them. Did you say that Lowe’s has them ? Thanks
DesertGardener what is your container soil mix made of and also how often do you recommend watering ? Thanks
Thanks. This was the exact info on growing apples in containers that I was looking for.
Where did you get the barrels and have you done an update on the trees
This is the best video I have EVER come across. I can't thank you enough for it. Keep up the great work. ❤️
I love these. Can you show us yours now?? I think putting them beside your steps was great idea!! How well did they produce for you? Also, where did you buy them from?
Baby is super excited and super adorable! a great addition to any garden video. :)
I just found this video, but I would like to know how these went with growing. I'm considering getting some (now that I know they exist) but was just curious how the entire process went for you.
I thought they just HAD to be fake too! How neat. Omg Geneva is SOOOOO cute! She's so good.
I have on tree I planted a few years back and get about 12 bushels of apples from. Made 20 gallons of dry cider from, keep it on tap all year round.
Do you leave them outside in the container over the winter?
Just found this and I might have to try these for next year - everyone is sold out for now. But the soil mix recipe I hope to try with my other dwarf trees. Thanks for all the great information! Blessings!
So...2 years ago..did these trees survive and do you still like them?
You gave me the confidence to buy my own!
Baby is enjoying gardening.
This is so amazing! I must have forwarded this video to ten people.
Love how she's eating the dirt anyway....lol ;-)
😣
My mum grew an apple tree in a 10 gallon container.
It looks like a sad, wasteland twig but produces up to 60 apples per year.
I don't know how, it's three branches and 4ft tall 😂
Growing granny Smith and cox apples and both are loving their containers too
It’s been 3 years, do you have any follow up to this?
So cool! I've seen these apple trees but wasn't sure about them. Thanks for doing this video! What a great option for ppl w small yards
It is a perfect option for those with small urban lots indeed.
Looking forward to growing some apple and plum trees. Thank you so much for your great infomation.
This is amazing!!! I'm so happy bc these will be perfect for me in NY... 🍎 woohoo...and your daughter is adorable!
How big are the planters that you using in the video..Where did you get them..
Such a good idea but I wonder what happens in the winter since they don't have the root insulation of the ground soil.
Your assistant is adorable
Thank you!

I am a Michigan native, now down in Zone 7. I've just stumbled across your channel and am learning a lot. This one was very timely (a few years old, but new to me!), as I just received a columnar apple tree from the nursery and repotted to a 7 gallon pot to give it a little room while I prepare a half whiskey barrel planter. Do you have a suggestion on whether I should wait at all before transplanting to the half barrel? I don't want to shock the plant with too much moving around, but if it makes sense to get it into the big planter sooner rather than later, I would potentially move it over within the week.
Hi. I have two questions. I've been growing columnar apple trees for a couple of years. I'm in zone 4 and was told not to leave them outside to overwinter so, we haul them into the garage in mid Fall. My question is about when to put them back outside. This year, one of the trees flowered before the snow melted. Temperatures were still dropping below freezing so, I was afraid to put it outside. This may be another year without apples. Do you have advice? Last year went well. This same tree had lots of apples then, one day, near the end of Summer, they all started dropping off. I didn't get one ripe apple. Did I overwater? Thanks for your help.
What soil mix do you have?
Your baby is adorable! These trees are so cute and amazing.
I'd imagine these could still live quite comfortably in zone 3 if they were placed in a greenhouse, they are about the right size for that a well!
Where could I find info on what your zones would be. We live in the UK (Kent) and I would like to find out what zone we would be considered to be.
Did you do a video on zones?
How long do these trees last? If the fruit just grows along one height-limited fruiting stem, will the stem not eventually get "full" with fruit sets and therefore there will be no more room for new fruit sets (not sure that's the correct term)? Thank you for your wonderful, informative videos.
Oh my gosh is she getting big ! ❤ I'm planting a cherry tree today
GENEVAAAAA!!!!
:)
I can't stop watching the baby, lol
You need to get another channel for her!😀💖
OMG BABY!!!! Cuteness overload. And thank you I too thaught they were a hoax. No I can order one with confidence. Thank you
I would love an update as well....also how do you winter them over?
love your new assistant 💓
Are these apple trees still producing for you?
What varieties did you get and how did they taste?
Thanks, Luke! I never knew that they existed! I'm wondering what varieties there are.. I'm just down the road, in Detroit, and I'll be ordering some.
Thank you for the video. I know you mentioned that they are not for zone 3, but what if I put them in my greenhouse. Would they grow good then?
Your daughter was trying to still the show, so cute. Now the soil mix looked good.
Wow. Such good information. We have a huge deck that we will be adding edibles to. These are perfect! 🤗
