I was at that gig and it was a special performance. Both did great. Natalie has a natural tone to her voice. Melanie’s voice is powerful and so unique, she gets better as the years go on.
I hope you're doing okay with everything, so much love to you and Im so proud of you for still working and making videos, but take time and break if you need, we'll still be here when you come back. Much love
I love Natalie and her voice. Considering she does not get as many solos as Mel And Shaz in her group, she's really underrated. Both Appleton sisters can sing and people need to give them more respect than just for their looks.
I was at the Sporty’s 40 night, Melanie was so hype that night as it was her birthday, so many of her friends, family celebrity friends, special guest performers, I think the hype and maybe being slightly nervous too affected her vocals that night. I felt she didn’t seem as relaxed as when I had seen her previously and most recently. Still what an amazing gig tho, this duet was a real treat on the night.
On 1st April 1997 a radio station on the Isle of Wight (I don't remember the name) announced a collaboration between All Saints and Spice Girls called All Spice. Alas, it was an April Fool's joke 🤣
All Saints Top 4 just on personal taste: Live vocals: 1. Natalie 2. Shaz 3. Mel 4. Nicole Studio Vocals: 1. Mel 2. Natalie 3. Shaz 4. Nicole Although Nicole never sounds off key and has a lovely voice as well, the others have more personality in theirs and they usually give Nicole the least solos but she is key for hamonies and chorus etc. but yeah we just hear the other three alot more, although Natalie is underrated as well. In most other girlgroups she would be a lead singer, she's definitely in this group for her musical talent and nice tone and not just because of her looks, like the press tried to make out in the 90s.
Same! I think she does it to cut down on her nasally sound when she’s singing a more delicate line. It’s a pretty good technique to combat how nasally her natural voice is.
Me too. I think she learned to do that during the spice girls days, to blend her voice better with everyone else's, because sometimes it sounded a lot louder then the rest on the live shows.
Melanie C was fantastic as always and was the best hands down. She was singing *LIVE* all types of music (pop, rock, dance, ballads) for consecutive hours. She's versatile and showcases both power and smoothness. She's the best singer between the Spice Girls and All Saints by miles. Her range, versatility and skills speak for herself. That being said, both were actually very nervous here and it was due to the fact that they're real friends in life and the other members of AS were in the audience watching them. See how the background singers were very stable instead. Natalie is the best singer in All Saints along with Shaznay. Nat has things that Shaz doesn't and vice versa. They're my two favourite members and singers of the group. Shaz is the heart of the group and as for Nat, I love the songs in which she sang solo ( _Dreams, On and On, One Me and You, Trapped_ etc). She offered variety to those songs, since the albums are very Shaz and Mel Blatt heavy. They all are very complimentary anyway, in the sense that Nat, Shaz and Mel are good soloists in a group but they need each other, I don't see potential as solo artists even though they all had great songs out of the group. Nicole is exclusively appropriate for the background vocals instead. Bottom line: 1. Melanie C 2. Shaz/Nat 3. Mel B, Emma, Mel Blatt 4. Nicole 5. Posh and Ginger.
Really enjoy watching your videos and critiques of the singing. Its all very interesting as i cant sing a note. Thanks for keeping up with them, through the tough times. Im glad its helping.
I would say go on the All Saints live performance of "Beg" on Jools Holland in 1998. Nicole still doesn't have a solo but could still be heard on the harmonies and adlibs. Mel is on sabbatical with her pregnancy so it makes the three voices clearer on the harmonies together and a little less confusing. But if you still need more Nicole, you're better off looking at the Appleton performance of "Fantasy" on Top Of The Pops in 2002 when Natalie and Nicole formed as a duo right after the All Saints split. Nicole may sound like her microphone is really low but she has to a lot of parts to be heard and seen. It's better to observe "Fantasy" than "Don't Worry" because "Don't Worry" is mostly Natalie. Without Shaznay and Mel, the camera has no choice but to let Natalie and Nicole be seen and yes, it is actually live - which is quite usual for Top Of The Pops.
I was there! What a night. It was also a party for Mel's birthday. She was having a good time with all her music friends, so I don't think the technique was top of mind. These voices do blend so well, and Shepherd's Bush was electric that night. Love your takes, as always!
Natalie for me as well. I think some people are just a bit biased since Nat is more low-key and Mel C is the most prominent voice of the biggest girlgroup of all time.
Nicole has some good solo moments on performances of One Woman Man and Rock Steady. There’s also a live performance of Long Long Road (an Appleton track) that showcases her lower register, probably the most solo vocals I’ve ever heard Nicole do live. This wasn’t performed live but Nicole sings the opening verse on All Saints’ cover of Girls on Film with Trevor Horn and she sounds great.
Mel's voice has great personality. It's very recognizable. Maybe you don't like her choices, but can't say it's bad. I love her overall. Natalie looks a bit unsure on stage, I think because she does not perform as much. And she is not with her bandmates, her safe space. But she does a great job. And they have a great vibe together, because they have been friends for so long.
I love Natalie’s voice . You should check her out with Nicole as the Appelton. Also can you do a tribute on the amazing Olivia Newton-John who sadly passed away on August 8th after a long fight against cancer . Thanks
I believe this performance was during an All Saints hiatus, so I imagine Natalie was probably slightly nervous about doing this, and out of the swing of things.
I have a video request for The Honest Vocal Coach- Mel C and Mel B: Sisters (Are Doing It For Themselves.) i personally find their TFI:Friday performance their best. I'd love to hear what ya think of it.
As a big fan of the spice girls and all saints I have to say that I love this performance. Who says both bands didn't get along back then? They seem to be great friends.
I didnt understand the critics For Mel c singing . She is pretty good.techniqually she dosent do anything wrong .its a Personal choice where someone Sings more breathy than others. Mel c is one of the stronger singers in all those girl groups techniqually. And her voice Tone is unique .
I think she can sing but it’s personal choice I mean I love her tone but not the way she sings sometimes 🤧😂🤷🏾♂️it is what it is. Same with Kandi Buruss I love her singing voice but I can understand those who don’t.
Technically not true there song from 2006 Rock Steady features one of the two sisters have a lead vocal but I couldn’t tell you which sister it is, plus there newer stuff since getting back together feature the sisters on lead much more
@@thomasfellows7541 True Nicole sings the second verse on Rock Steady. Natalie has solos on some singles like the second verse on Under The Bridge and she's the lead in the chorus on Lady Marmelade, has a solo middle 8 in War Of Nerves. Nicole has only gotten more solo lines since they reunited though. I read it had to do with Shaz writing most of their older songs and at the time, they were not getting along so Shaz kind of gave all the solos to Mel and herself lol
In The Mask Singer, Natalie sounds like a lyric singer. Something in this duet interfered with her full capacity. Proof is her "Out of Reach" harmonies were powerful. I thought the euro-dance "one liners" in All Saints were iconic, but after watching The Mask Singer I can see how professional she is. A singer can reach the golden note only when choosing the right song. On the other hand, if you are struggling, you might sound Ok when you are actually amazing. As in life. Would you please, review All Saints Never Ever live in IOW. The melodies are very interesting.
That was a concert. With differents apperrences artists . It was not the begining. And 4 the way mel c voice sounds always have been that way. With respect. My opinión ❤️
I don't know what you hear but Mels voice is so much better and stronger than Natalies. I can't hear any soul in Natalies voice. It is just an average voice. The song is great to use some breathy parts! It fits!
Mel's voice is too powerfull for that part ,and it is too low for her, so she used breathy voice to make her voice more soft.... Of course Natalie wins.... it's her song LOL
It’s probably worth noting Mel C was drunk as this was a gig for her 40th haha. Also, that breathy voice that you don’t like, I always feel Mel C does that when she’s trying to be a bit softer as well all know she has a set of pipes on her and that’s where she’s comfortable. So when she has to sing more softly, when harmonising with the Spice Girls for example she uses this voice or like here where she is singing with something that has a softer more quiet voice with less range plus this isn’t Mel’s song so I think that has to be taken into it too. I have watched most of this gig but never watched this song as I didn’t think Natalie would be too good, however she actually surprised me. She’d be my number 3 out of the 4. But she probably closer to 2 now than prior to me hearing this. Ps sending you positive vibes once more. I can’t believe how amazing these vids still are given everything. X
I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record re Natalie lol but I was really hoping you’d review Rosanna and Chains (where she gets to shine on harmonies). She’s such an underrated member… Anyway, my order of best singers: 1) Shaznay (for consistency and versatility) 2) Mel and Nat joint or I’d put Nat a very close 3rd. 4) Nicole
I'd say live Natalie is actually the best, she's usually the most reliable and powerful live vocalist, while Mel has a gorgeous voice but more of a studio voice, i remember being diappointed she was so quiet live. Shaz can sing but vocally wise, she is not my cup of tea. Nicole is usually just used for harmonies, although the Appleton album and some solos on singles like Rock Steady prove she can sing solos as well. But i agree she's needed and the group and the nicest with the fans but vocally she's far behind the others.
I really enjoyed this performance. Natalie isn’t a bad singer, Shaz and Mel are just stronger. Could it be that Mel C and her ‘breathe’ is so the verse doesn’t end so harshly being Scouse? I’m Scottish so there’s a similar roughness to our tones.
Wow I’ve never seen this performance before an All saint & Spice girl ! Slightly preferred Natalie Appleton mostly, I love mel c but her technique irritates me sometimes lol even if I do love her tone.
Can't believe some of these comments. Melanie C has the worst voice ever, screeching out of tune is not singing. Mel B was the only spice girl who could sing! Natalie however has a beautiful voice.

Georgina I loved your reaction to this video, so funny at times. I think Natalie has a very nice tone to her voice. I agree with you about Melanie, I do like her but I find her voice a little irritating at times.
Mel's voice is not good here, pitchy and overly breathy. Natalie's voice is clear and totally on key - Mel clearly wanted to try to overshadow her. Backing vocals are FAR too loud, whoever is doing the mixing needs sacking. I always find Mel to be extremely overrated and is always pitchy. Always enjoyed Natalie's voice.

Fair to say, Mel had been singing live for 2 hours at this point.
Yes 👏 👏
She wasn' t that good from the first song that night
She sounded as bad 2hrs before 🙄🙄🙄
I was at this show. It was wicked. Melanie owned it and can sing anything. Might not be everyone's cuppa tea but shes mine. Her talent is overwhelming

An All Saints live performance which features Nicole live on a solo verse is Whooping Over You live at Jools Holland.
I love Natalie and her voice. Considering she does not get as many solos as Mel And Shaz in her group, she's really underrated. Both Appleton sisters can sing and people need to give them more respect than just for their looks.
