What Happened To Dell?

  • Since its 1984 launch in Michael Dell's dorm , Dell has evolved from a PC maker to a $90 billion in revenue and services in storage, servers, cloud infrastructure and data security. Since then, CEO, Michael Dell has taken his company public, private and then public again as it tried to keep up with changing consumer and business customer needs.
Dell's first IPO happened in 1988 when “Dell Computer Corp.” went public at $8.50 a share with a market capitalization of $85 million. In 1992, Michael Dell became the youngest Fortune 500 CEO at 27. By 2001, Dell had overtaken Compaq as the world’s largest PC maker.
But by 2013, demand for PCs stalled as tablets and smartphones became more popular. Later that year, Michael Dell took the company private. In 2015, Dell purchased data storage company EMC, a deal that still stands as the largest technology acquisition of all time. In 2018, Dell returned to the public markets as Dell Technologies.

My uncle started working as a security guard in a Dell factory and he was intrigued and because obsessed with the computers. He then started learning about computing in his spare time and ended up getting promoted to the assembly line in the same factory. He then climbed the promotion ladders and ended up getting a mega promotion to a job in Texas. It really shows how you can start off small and follow your dreams.

That’s what happened to my 2 year old laptop, my Nvidia HP driver keeps on freezing and crashing Windows 10. After 1 year of purchasing the laptop HP finally updated the Nvidia driver, that solved the problem. Now it is freezing and crashing my laptop again, because HP haven’t updated the driver to be compatible with the new Windows 10 build. I can’t use the driver from Nvidia, because HP computers comes with HP proprietary motherboards. You can use the generic Nvidia drivers, but it will crash your system constantly. I know because I tried it before. After this laptop I am switch to Dell or Apple, I will never buy HP’s junk again.

I used to repair Dell pcs for businesses, hospitals and universities in the UK. We were over busy with next business day service. Almost every computer at Oxford Uni is a Dell.

I hope they wont shutdown consumer pc hardware section. I think dell PCs always stand in front of the competition. Also their prices are competitive.

I dont think they will. They have become pioneers in providing computing solutions to large conglomerates, consumer products is not as critical to the bottom line as it uses to be

Great laptop. I have the 15 9560. Unfortunately dell has a lot of quality control issues. Had it about a year and stuck pixels are becoming an issue.

Kevin Shiflett that's the exact one I have! Fortunately I haven't had any issues at all. First thing I did though was nuking my windows and installing Linux. Makes things much more bearable.

But XPS bezels aren't even that good compared to the competition anymore. Maybe if it were still 2016

My very first desktop replacement was an Alienware before they merge with Dell. After the desktop replacement went to crap and not willing to invest more money into it, I went with my first Dell desktop pc, the Dell XPS 400, and this was during the merge between the two companies. Not a bad pc. The Dell pc was bought in 2002 and is still working to this day. It had it’s time, but I decided one day to build a new computer with a new tower, motherboard, etc. in order to keep up with more demanding games.

I bought 3 laptops and a desktop pc from Dell in the past 12 years. I think I'm a pretty savvy shopper. Every time I go shopping and do comparison they always come on top in my list. And their PC's were always reliable so far. Dell is like Toyota in the pc world

Virtualization and the Server Cloud changed everything! Love the footage from dell manufacturing from early 2000's in a piece from 2019? Talk about out of date, CNBC.... There needs to be a new game changer within the business computing infrastructure.
