How could you not want to learn as much as possible from someone like this? An absolute genuine guy, loves to teach and passionate about drumming. I enjoy watching every video and attempting to learn everything I can. But I am one that could ruin an anvil with a rubber mallet as well! lol
Nicely explained. I've taught a lot of Drumline since 1973 and my website drum tab has 1,000 videos on rudiments and about everything else Drumset (5000+ students since 1998: necessity is the mother of invention), but this was very nicely explained so I sent it to my students. Thanks.
Some observations;Herta is a line of mass produced German frankfurter sausage on sale in the U.K. Second:there is always a two universe scenario between any drum rudiment notated & how it’s actually played:it seems like chalk & cheese to continue the food analogy. Third:the Kim Plainfield book is a monster & could actually be anyone’s desert island tutor book. And fourth - well played and explained.😀👍
Wow Mike.... This is amazing.. this exact fill popped in my head a few hours before your video came up😅😅😅 (not that I am a seer or anything 😹😹😹)... I just didn't know how many different ways it could be applied. Thank you so much. I appreciate this lesson. And your way of creating it..…. " Do it once, then do it a second time to let the audience know you (the drummer) know what you are doing and then as usual.. two notes to get you out of the fill"... Most times those two notes are what can be permutated as a starting point for my own print to it 😁😁😁
Hey Mike! I think this is a more detailed lesson of using the herta than one you uploaded years ago, I'm not entirely sure. But I'm pretty sure I have a video of me using the herta you taught in the older lesson on Instagram that I uploaded over a year ago. Anyway, great lesson. I've learned a whole lot about drumming just from watching you.
I don't know why, but I have a hard time liking the Herta concept. Well, I've never spent any time on Hertas learning to use it. But still I don't think it fits in anywhere, no matter how good you play it.. However Mike, I've never heard Hertas been played like this, but this is the best I've heard so far. This actually made some sense 🤗
I just realized that the "bludoosh" fill is essentially the same sticking as a herta, put you just smoosh the first two notes together into a flam. Kind of makes working out that fill a bit easier, since leading off a fill with a left-handed flam can be awkward at first.
Aaaah that 5:13 fill!!! Break it down pleeease! I got to add man, that your videos are always such an inspiration! For me, you're the greatest online teacher ever! Your ability to lift the spirit of viewers and make people love and enjoy everything about the drums is so amazing!! Thx for everything you do man! ♥️
I always love your approach. Now have another use for the underrated herta other than "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age and "Hot for Teacher". Thanks!
you're genius! simple concept taken to the next level... first I was 'dude that sounds complicated as hell'! but it's 'quite the opposite' :D I don't mean it is simple but... awesome Mike
I listen to your podcast everyday while I walk my dog, and I love your videos. I need to get into one of your camps!! Definite bucket list thing I am going to do. They are always sold out though. Do you ever do clinics in Canada?
Hi mike sir can u tell me do u use any micro mikes for recording cuz I didn't see any mikes btw if there are no mikes I should say that your drums and cymbals sounds amazing
Thanks so much for the kind words Sangarva. I actually have a single overhead and another mic about a foot in front of the kit. Both are Audio Technica AT5045's :)
Hi mike sir actually I also have a youtube channel of my own.i have started it approximately 2 weeks ago so I need to socialise my channel so if you dont have any problem can you give me some viewers
Mike, those cymbals sound so trashy and ugly! I love it. I thought that my Sabian Evolution crash cymbals sounded cool, but those things make them look like dime-store kid toys. Oh my God. I need to get a pair.

I just got my kit back after 2 years! I have been rewatching all of your videos and playing nonstop. Thanks Mike!!!
YES!!!!
Mike: "Hey, here is this cool rudiment and I'll show you how you can use it on the kit"
Thomas Haake: "You could make a band out of this!"
A bit meshugga
You’re one of the best drum tutors in RUclips. Always straight to the point and encouraging.
Thanks a million Paolo! Much appreciated :)
Mike.... ur brilliant.. kind person. There is something nice about u. God bless u n ur drumming .
The herta 3-4-3-4-2 pattern used to be the opening fill in your intro years ago! Loved always hearing that lick
5:05 and 5:15 are my favorite parts of what you're doing. Those smooth little ghosted rolls that get you back into the beat are awesome.
Thanks so much man, and heck, thanks for making it that deep into the video, lol :)
Thanks for the good vibes Mike! Cheers from Argentina!

I love when you talk man. Great sense of humour with great teaching.
THnx Mike, you inspire me to go out and practice new things again! And playing that sparkly Gretsch only adds to the magic.
Great video Mike.
So good
Such an amazing teacher!
The late great Kim Plainfield!
I studied with him at the drummers collective in the late 90s and I love Advanced Concepts.
That's awesome! I met him there once when I was giving a clinic at the school. The book is one of my all time favorites :)
great explanation and demonstration Mike!!
zappa2013 Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Yessssss another lesson

You Just made my day! Thank you so much. I hope to be back in Thailand for a clinic tour soon!
1st time seeing that intro. Really great!
Great video. I'm excited to be able to use the info. Thanks!
So dang cool!
Love this!
Try starting it on 3 to cross it over the bar line and finish with some variation of 3e&a 4e&a for a fantastic build into a big chorus.
Really liking the kit, Mike. Sounds so good!
Absolutely loving the vintage Gretsch kit! Your videos are so entertaining- love all your content man! Fantastic tips and creativity
Oh yeah! I realy need to spend my time on this. It is so dope!🤘
Awe man, that's so great to hear! Have fun with it my friend
loved the metronome slip in there lol
Oh jeez....and the drum shells! :)

Hello from Russia ! Thanks for your lesson :)))
You are very welcome Кирилл! Enjoy practicing this one :)
Your inability to age and suck on the drums is fascinating.
LOL! Trust me, I have the ability to do both 😂 but thank you very much 🙏🙏
Mike Johnston 😘
Love this vid so much! Also happy new year!!!
Great to hear my friend. Happy New Year to you as well!
Please make something like this for the six stroke roll!
This is awesome! Thanks so much!

The drums sound fab. What heads do you have on the toms? (Aquarian, I know, but what type?)

5:13 - 5:16. Make a video on this please. I’ve been trying to figure how to do that but I can seem to figure it out.

you don't have to explain that chest thump, we've been watching for more than a decade so we are used to it :-)
Beautiful! tuff😣
Tough indeed, but soooo worth it once you get it down :)
Olá Mike a música é realmente universal mesmo com a dificuldade da língua eu tenho aprimorado muito a minha musicalidade e técnica obrigado !!!!!

Hi Mike! Thank you for all the insight and videos! Very inspiring! Question..... What in ears are you using?
You are more than welcome Mark! I have been using the Ultimate Ears UE6Pro's for about a year now. Love em :)
Yeees!😎
How to do the chop that you did in your three in one chop builder? The bam bam ba ba bam one

Glad ya dig it Olli :)
Very cool intro :D
Traducilo amigo!esto no se vé solo en tu pais
I'm thinking I will take those buttery biscuits and offset them one 1/16th with some sausage gravy.
NOW you're talkin!!! Have a blast Robbie :)
Hey Mike I see you switched from Vater to Vic Firth sticks ? 😧
Anyone know what that strange noise was at the 2:32 mark?
The bike shop above my studio dropped something heavy on their floor, lol.
I knew I wasn’t hearing things because I kept going back to the 2:32 mark... thanks, your video lessons are really informative by the way. 👍
Muito bom 👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
wow
Nice vid
Great to hear, glad you enjoyed it my friend :)
Woah, but, this vid was put out 5 minutes ago, your comment is 2 minutes old, which means you could have only watched 3 minutes of the video, hmm.
2:32 What in the heck was that “bchooaam” sound ?
LOL! Great ear. The Bike shop above my studio must have dropped something heavy on the floor :)
Ha !!!
That fill is that old obscure Chili Pepper's song "ME AND MY, ME AND MY, ME AND MY, ME AND MY FRIENDS"
Hilarious. Watching the thumbnail while scrolling with no sound and was like "ahhh, the herta." Funny how you can hear it without actually hearing it.
Mike, those cymbals sound so trashy and ugly! I love it. I thought that my Sabian Evolution crash cymbals sounded cool, but those things make them look like dime-store kid toys. Oh my God. I need to get a pair.

The metronome app can’t use on the ipad?

Sounds like the German green tea brand,,,,Maybe,,,,
Color-picked from the shirt.
Bro you GOTTA reverse your accents. Ghosting those two 32nds with accented 16ths gives you that little roll thing which sounds killer.
