It's amazing how I can see all of the rudiments he's implementing only 3 months in. He's a wizard and this is so helpful.
This is actually the best drumeo vid I've watched. I thought Eric Moore was sweet, but I went back some videos and this drummer... this drummer is just literally showing people how to drum????!!
Probably the most instructional drumming video I’ve seen! Especially the beginning when he talks about how he learned rudiments over top of the bossanova foot pattern. Very good tip mixing in feet with rudiment exercises!
I’ve come back to this video and watch it all the way through every year. The amount of information in this is endless. And it always teaches me something new. The concepts are so broad. So that’s why I pick only 3-4 of these concepts and dive into them each year.
Damn at 37:36 he explains converting a 4/4 groove to odd is easy if you learn to syncopate the hihat accent, then chain the two together. that is genius. I always knew it worked that way, but never stated it as a solid step for practicing.

Incredible how many people on youtube are correcting him about time signatures when they have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. The bossa in the feet and the five stroke roll can be interpreted a number of ways. At that tempo, I hear it in two (the feet) rather than four. The repeating 5 stoke roll is felt in three (the number of eighth notes involved), so what you have is the hands in 3/8 and the feet in 2/4. Or at a slower tempo it would feel more like 3/4 over 4/4.
Maybe they're correcting him because he meant to say he's playing the five stroke roll in 3/8, but instead said he's playing it in 5. And this clarification helps beginners who might take that explanation at face value. Especially because he then goes on to say 1 2 3 4 5 without adding the 6 which is a rest. Anyone trying to play the 5 stroke roll in 5/16 will then end up with RRLLRLLRRL instead of RRLLR(rest)LLRRL(rest), and it won't sound the same as Thomas's exercise. No harm in pointing it out here.
@@shreyasiyengar8408 - thank you, you are correct about the rest making the pattern take up 6 16th notes, Thomas need to say his five stroke was in the space of a 3/8 measure.
Not only did he do exactly what the title says by giving many examples and tips about rudiments and how to apply them to the drums but more importantly he also mentioned many many drummers, songs, genres, rhythms every time to back up his examples so we can do extra work but looking them up. This is my favorite drumeo record, I learned so much thank you!

Freaking love this video. I keep coming back. Thomas Pridgen is awesome. I watched this like 7 times now. He explained odd numbers with different lead hands very well and good ideas for working on the weak hand.. Most people just get on here and show off, but he made it very educational and just fun to watch. Like other drummers, I crippled myself by not taking the time to know what rudiments were, even though I was playing a few and didn't know it. This video made it very clear.. thank you Drumeo, and Mr. Pridgen. Why not take the hi hat shoe off tho?.. i play in just socks all the time. I love those doubles at 7:41. A lot of nutrition for learning drummers in this video.. I like how he explained the odd numbers to change drums left or right.. especially the 5's that was really helpful. He's so fast tho it's hard to even enter his world.. He just knows what he's playing. One of the best drum videos.. right here. Pridgen is badass.
the exercises around 17:00 - 29:00 (and beyond) minutes was really useful to me. it's a lot more challenging than it seems in my opinion. that alone made the lesson worth it for me. also i saw thomas play with the mars volta a couple times back when they were still together and MAN he was great! thanks for this upload guys.
Absolutely the best! Pure soul, that big cymbal sound in contrast with the drum tuning , not to mention the tech ability, is pure art!! Thomas is my favorite drummer.
I swear Serj was lurking somewhere around 53 minutes in wondering exactly wtf was going on. xD Aside from my silliness, it's really good to see someone actually talking about things, and throwing out tips that can help us all. Thanks Mr. Pridgen and Drumeo!
And those signature HUGE hi hats! 15" or even 16" (?!?!?!?) I think. I went to see Thundercat, saw these hats on stage and knew immediately who the drummer was.
Chris McCartney And you can here the compression ducking when he talks, highly enigneered, but yes, well done. kick is punchier than sounds good on record (typically), but is good for deconstructing....
I have been able to get one of my toms to have a even ring with no dampening and a very nice drop to the ring. not sure how i did it. haven't done it since. but i almost guarantee that he knows exactly how to tune his set every single time he plays. Some drummers even tune by feeling the tension on the drum head. but yeah the pre and post production probably did help clear up the sound but not much

Damn this guy makes any drum set he plays on sound amazing!
This is why i like Drum's so Much. Blessing come from Above.
Or Below.
Aside from Thomas energy, you guys achieve the best drum sound I've ever heard.
I love how you capture the soul of every kit.
He is the best teacher I have come across in drumeo🤗so far
he plays with such joy. I wish I felt this way about my job. I love this guy
still one of my favorite drumming video of all time...so much soul...it's just unbelievable to watch and comprehend playing like this!!
love that he mentions Jim. Thomas is truly a drummers drummer. Take care everyone! Fantastic segment.
1:50 that roll and how hard he hit the bass is pure magic!!! So clean too.
Absolutely phenomenal lesson. Never listened to him much, now I realize how similar of a style and philosophy we have.
Thomas is so dope!!! Great ideas! Thanks for the share!
This is a great lesson. I generally don't follow Pridgen because his style is far from what I want to be, or could be even if I wanted to. :) But the exercises he teaches here, and the ideas he shared are already proving beneficial. Thanks Drumeo for bringing us these great drummers and their incredible knowledge.
last napa Gracias papa por sus palabras!!!! Lo agradezco mucho. Espero que todo estas bien! Abrazos fuerte!
johnny albit Look past the crazy Pridgen stuff and there's some great exercises there.
johnny albit please shut up
Freaking love this video. I keep coming back. I been on a journey to dig into drum technique for a few years now, and I remember the first time I watch this about when it came out, I could not comprehend most of it. Next year I could understand a bit more, next year a bit more and so on. Thomas really is a beast at another level of course, but super happy that every time I watch this I can grasp more of it, and bring new stuff to my own drumset. Thanks!
I can't stop watching and listening to his left hand. It sets the whole tone. It has always fascinated me above all other drummers.
Dude just feels the groove. Makes it look so effortless to play drums.
Dude's right foot is so fast he burned his shoe completely off.
LOL!!!!!
Beat me to it! 🤣
His sock must be fire retardent.
😂😂😂
*sock fire mentality handicapped.
doubles out of this world.
One of the best exercise video! Thank you Thomas.

Every year I rewatch this video and learn something mind blowing that I completely missed the year before
Thomas Pridgen is awesome.
Wow... He's a great drummer and a fantastic teacher... Great lesson!
the exercises around 17:00 - 29:00 (and beyond) minutes was really useful to me. it's a lot more challenging than it seems in my opinion. that alone made the lesson worth it for me. also i saw thomas play with the mars volta a couple times back when they were still together and MAN he was great! thanks for this upload guys.
That clear acrylic set he used with them was ridiculous.
This man is a brilliant teacher. I dig the way he sort of explains his mindset and then SHOWS you what hes thinking. awesome. also sweet t-shirt!
Thomas is my favorite drummer. I met him at a Memorials show years ago and he was super fucking nice. 🤙🏼
he really throws down, thx to Drumeo for all of these great videos.
Truly one of the best of the best!!
That kit is amazing. No moongel/dampening and it sings so well (I'm sure their recording setup is great too). Nothing like DW.
I'm pretty sure its gated to hell; sounds a little too choked to me for that to be natural.
Tony Gilbert-Davis 19" ;)
I have been able to get one of my toms to have a even ring with no dampening and a very nice drop to the ring. not sure how i did it. haven't done it since. but i almost guarantee that he knows exactly how to tune his set every single time he plays. Some drummers even tune by feeling the tension on the drum head. but yeah the pre and post production probably did help clear up the sound but not much
Thomas has to be one of the fastest drummers I’ve ever seen. What a beast!
definitely the best drum lesson that I've ever seen!
Those exercises are super legit 👌🏾 been doing them for about a month and i see great improvements to my drumming. Thomas a real one 🫡 salute 💯
This was so good!!! I'm coming back to this!!! Thx @drumeo, @ThomasPridgen . So much insight!!
that snare sounds AMAZING! the whole set sounds great, especially with Thomas behind them. I like this dude 👍
Super amazing kit
Watching this makes me want to buy a drum set. This dude is a monster.... I'm about to to put on some Mars Volta, too... haha..
Proof that not all potheads are lazy.
Thank you, Thomas.
Treborman hhahahahah savage
Saint Jabroni that’s just mean. Lol.
actually pot really helps to stay focused when you practice! ask nick diaz, lol
@@pavlonwilcz5650 No it doesn't. At least to me, i can't even play a 6stroke roll when stoned. Hardly even keep a steady beat.
@@angelrgdrums Change your dealer, buddy! Lol. But really though, once, we discussed that topic while stoned. A freind of mine was reaaaaally sceptical about practicing martial arts while stoned (for the same reason as you). Once he started moving he yelled: "I GOOOOOOT IT!!! ONCE HOME, I'M TOTALLY TRYING IT"
Mad respect. Thomasa Pridgen is awsome, and its clear he earned it. One throw of the sticks at a time.
I love Great Drummers Thomas is one of the Best I have ever seen smooth great sound Great attitude , great teaching style, and Fun to watch Thanks Thomas !!! from a Bass Player
Whoa... This cleared my mind so much! Thank you Thomas for the real class that is this video!
Thomas is a well schooled musician. Very talented.
"I don't know what song i'm playin" lol plays it perfectly.
i think he was just jamming haha he's unbelievable
This and Eric Moore’s vid are the vault of drumeo. Remember my words. Its like ALOT to learn in ‘such a little time”
So many great things to work through here! Just goes to show that spending time on your rudiments really pays off.
