I'm a bassist who stumbled over here to learn some more about what the drummer is thinking and improve my own sense of rhythm/timing. This lesson is outstanding and packed with transferable knowledge. Loving it
Although I total believe he could count out an entire solo, I'm sure that he had a guide track counting for him separate from the mix playback we just heard..
My favorite part of the lesson was when Benny talked about not having a "music background" and thinking that maybe he "doesn't have it." I have had those doubts in the past and occasionally still do, but the at the end of the day, it comes down to the effort you show and the dedication you have. That's a message I think all drummer and musicians and PEOPLE should really apply to their lives in their own ways.
Drumeo "Time" and "Feel" sections. On the other hand you must be as perfect as possible metronome for a band. On the other hand without great "internal mix" between hats, ride, crashes, ghost notes, rimshots and kicks entire song will sound weak without groove and drive.
Drumeo "Time" and "Body" sections are my favourites. "Time" because, in my opinion, Benny Greb explains the concept of time and how to develop your internal metronome better than other drummers. "Body" was also so interesting because no one until now had never explained that concept.
Drumeo Favorite parts are the "Time" and "Open Drum Solo". Benny is a savage and a huge inspiration in the drumming community. Thanks Drumeo for having him!

I've been doing yoga a lot for a year or two and one of the things my instructor makes me focus on is breathing throughout each move. I took a break from drums during this time and when I went back to my kit, I noticed I was holding my breath during fills. I adjusted and started to play with a better frame of mind, less stress and more enjoyment. I'm very glad Benny brought this up.

Benny is funny and top 10 influential players of our time. For a drummer I'd say that experience was super informative, insightful, and funny. To be honest, I can't perceive if you are being sarcastic or not but I will assume that way:p I did not suggest that and even if you have click playing in your ear, you still must play the exactly same number of bars every time which still makes it an amazing performance. I just felt like a click track is more likely.
No I wasn't being sarcastic. And the fact that (if it's true what you are saying though) he or any drummer uses a click track while playing these kind of things doesn't make the performance any less fantastic. Counting bars is indeed kinda difficult to do for two minutes while playing a solo.
There's also a chance that his in-ear mix could have some counts and cues like "Bridge, 2, 3, 4" and "Solo, 2, 3, 4" etc to help guide through the song. I'm not saying that's what he did, because if anyone can groove with an off-time feel for so long and still come back in on the beat, it's this guy, but I'm just throwing out another possibility!

It's basically concept, described in a very concrete manner, followed by a Greb groove that only tangentially connects to the description.

He cheats a little bit :) If you watch closely you can see that on top of the second snare lays an unmounted additional drum-head. This is like a dampening ring taken to the extreme.
As a guitarist I was advised to check out Benny Greb after asking a drumming collegue about groove and everything that goes with it. Ordered his two DVDs (waiting for them as I write this) and watched this video to get an idea about what he does. Bennys lessons should be standard for every musician! Looking forward to the DVDs. Benny is a special drummer. His unique signature and groove are inspiring and he seems to always be expanding his sound. Every time I watch him or Larnell, I pick up something. Even with all of his talent he seems humble and kind. Keep it up Benny and thanks Drumeo!
Nick games I’m a drummer and I’m first to admit that a drum kit is not a musical instrument. It is merely for timekeeping or in more advanced drumming terms, the art of subdividing the beat. You shouldn’t feel shame or anger, embrace drums as a glorified metronome. Nothing more and I’m a drummer.

Out of all of the modern players, I come back to Benny more then the rest of them. His musicality shows more and he makes more statements with his playing then all of the other rediculously talented/boring people out there. I really dig this dude! And you can learn quite a lot no matter what level you are.
1:00:37 - what's the name of the technique he is using in his left hand, I don't think I've ever seen that before, unless it's a variation on something? idk... Could somebody please tell me, thanks
+DobsonFynley I'm not sure that technique has a name - might even be something Benny invented to facilitate the 4 stroke, to maximize rebound. Looks like a wildly twisted Moeller whip. I could certainly be wrong, tho. I'm curious too.
It's a moeller modification Jojo Mayer came up with but lots of other drummers use now. I suggest looking into jojo's videos for the best breakdown of it. It's a fantastic technique that can be used to get up to 6 hits in one swoop
+Don Williamson what are you talking about? It's a just a free rebound with twisting wrist to control amount of rebounds. It's not a "technique". It can't even be called a grip.

Dave Rucki How about you're up next and you break down your sick Inventure parts?
Dave Rucki Only one set of hi hats actually
The rest are just stacks
*****
No he means theres literally three hi hat cymbals haha. Two bottoms. One top.
What a musical drummer beautiful to watch and listen too
haha I love how Jared is completely fanboying Benny xD
Hi Greb you are a great drummer bro and also quite good in teaching, the world is blessed with people like you.
not only is this guy masterful, he seems like he would be an awesome dude to have a beer with!
Heard this one before
Same comment 3 times. Weirdo
It's hard to get 5 minutes into this thing, I just keep rewinding in amazement
Your stuck ,,,,,jump now.
best drummer I've known so far
Benny Greb is very down to Earth with Grooves and the ear training for in depth quantizing polyrhythms. Thanks Benny
Benny Grebb, drum philosopher
That side snare isn't just fat, it's morbidly obese.
He cheats a little bit :) If you watch closely you can see that on top of the second snare lays an unmounted additional drum-head. This is like a dampening ring taken to the extreme.
Well yes that what makes a snare fat.
Your comment rules.
Josh Steffen you fucking rule :D
@@VictorCardena3 ;)
"Focus camps"..."Germany"...? Concentration camps??? DID THE EDITORS READ THIS???? Love Benny, and Jared was funny geeking out about Benny.
Did you see how red he was? Lmao
You beated me so here is my like
Deine Mudda
Seriously. This plus his affinity for bill OReilly makes me question Benny a bit.
Thx for this video!
It would be awesome if you got JP Bouvet on to do a lesson! :D All these Meinl Artists coming on after all.
Adam Salma too far
Douglas Choi and matt halpern :)
Yes jp is awesome!
Douglas Choi Yeah, & Jarion Da'Von too.. :D
Yes. Get JP. Meinl for the win. He'd be a very relatable example to drummers since he is so young and yet so successful.
Benny Greb is awesome!!!
This is Fantastic. He is so humble which makes not only a fantastic drummer but an awesome person.
Thanks for sharing this.
Inspiration for Easy Drum Beat that Sounds Hard at 3:50? Anyway, great stuff
Well well well look who it is
I'm a guitarist, i can drum for shit....but this vid was amazing!!!! Really helped me out in thinking the way of programming drums when im doing that.
Awesome vid, awesome drummer!
Grapefruit is by far my favorite song by Benny Greb. Great lesson, great person.
Ps: The Clinic that he did at Musicians Institute was amazing
Esteban Carvajal you should hear that 'im tweaked' from benny... thats my favourite
2 million views?! I believe it, it deserves it. I've literally watched this episode at least 30 times.
The first song of the video, WHAT A GROOOOOVE! Where does this genius drummer come from???
Germany ;)
Dang!!! Pocket, groove, solid, and just plain amazing!!
#QueRrriiicooo
The Gods and Goddesses of Rhythm and Cool and Casual and Humble got together and decided to bring Benny Greb into the world. And aren't we all most grateful indeed.
Jared looks like he's fangirling over Benny xD
And why not
who wouldnt dude
Yep. I'm doing it at home.
We all are...
These sayings today are just so dumb! FANGIRLING ,good grief ,ugh.I'd kick ya in the shin if you called me a Fangirl.
i think every drum video is shoes commercial
Underrated comment. Makes me wonder if any of the drummers that do these sorts of things regularly have a shoe deal?
haha :-)
I *think* Stan Bicknell does have a shoe deal.
In the eye of the beholder
Royalty Check! gracias.
one of the best lessons to date in my opinion.
jojo mayer could add up to that ;-)
Benny is a special drummer. His unique signature and groove are inspiring and he seems to always be expanding his sound. Every time I watch him or Larnell, I pick up something. Even with all of his talent he seems humble and kind. Keep it up Benny and thanks Drumeo!
160 people still think drumming is just banging on a bunch of things
Reply if your in the same situation were unintelligent people from school keep saying drumming is not an instrument
@@JS45678 you are disgustingly, depressingly wrong.
Chris Brock Please tell me where I’m wrong my friend. I’m a drummer and guitarist, I’m always open to being educated.
@@JS45678 you're acting as if the drummer doesn't make a difference to a song. Instead of getting into some stupid argument, I am just going to point you to some songs. Breathing Underwater by Hiatus Kaiyote, Lippincott by Animals as Leaders, Lingus by Snarky Puppy, Lateralus by Tool, Strings of Light by Yussef Kamaal, Sugar Cane by Nubiyan Twist. Listen to these songs, really listen, and you will understand.
Good to see Benny finally bought new shoes :D
after all of those years... :D
penkata drums oh my god haha
+penkata drums speaking of the shoes. what is his shoes? I'm currently looking nike's shoes 1 by 1 but I can't find it >.
+Ken Arandia They're Nike Free 5.0 :)
+Cameron Weaver Yes, I've seen it dude and bought it. Haha. Thanks though :D
focus camps in germany....glad he didnt use another word for focus, great video though!
haha
He probably does lol
As soon as I heard him say, camps in Germany, I went straight to the comments.
He also tried his techniques on the kids apparently 14:45 haha I always come back to this vid, love it
Literally came to the comments to find a comment about that
I can't say how many times I've watched this video just for the opening. Benny's probably my all time favorite drummers.
benny at drumeo..
live complete..
7:46 - He calls them "Focus Camps"
...
Not to be confused with....
;-)
God Benny greb is so good he makes my toes tingle!
really dude
Mike Lumer If he would have said Concentration Camps, i would have lost it lol.
Mike Lumer This just made my day
Mike Lumer you deserve one of the dvd's!!!
Amazing...
***** CONGRATS Akos, your comment was one of the three chosen to win a signed copy of Benny's new DVD "The Art & Science Of Groove"! A private message has been sent with more info :)
Drumeo can you list the other two winners as well? i'm dying to know if i won, cuz if not i wanna buy asap. thanks Drumeo!
Drumeo Thank You guys! :) I replied in PM.
Benny Greb is incredible and my ABSOLUTE favorite drummer!! I was a contributer to the kickstart campaign for The Art & Science Of Groove!! It would be incredible to own a copy
bring gavin harrison please drumeo
He is going to teach a lesson in August 21st this year!
It's out
4:59 what da? is that the actual song? how is it possible to come in like that again after all that "improvising" ;O
+Lukas T a click. he knows how many measures there were in between
+Caleb Poe oh i see^^ thanks!
+Lukas T Or even maybe a part of the track pplaying on in his in-ears, with some riffs and cues continuing. He can mix his monitor-track as he likes and output something else to the audience. But you are right, it migt just be a click.
+Lukas T He has a click in his in-ears :)
+Lukas T the guy on the laptop may be beatmatching? or hes got a click/cue track in his ears
good drummer. you are my buddy rich
Out of all of the modern players, I come back to Benny more then the rest of them. His musicality shows more and he makes more statements with his playing then all of the other rediculously talented/boring people out there. I really dig this dude! And you can learn quite a lot no matter what level you are.
That's a nice finish on the spongebob kit he has there.... ;)
Nice Bill O'Reilly reference. "DO IT LIVE!"
+Robert Mirabelle ^
+Don Williamson what are you talking about? It's a just a free rebound with twisting wrist to control amount of rebounds. It's not a "technique". It can't even be called a grip.
Just opening and closing with ur front heel that is the good way to keep the foot on hi hat
Cant believe how great this is!! So much groove, why would anyone dislike this!?
6:06 umm... he's not hitting the cymbal? or is it just a weird angle.
Man you're right!!! How TF nobody commented on this... :)
@@brunch1691980 & the cymbal still moves...😳
Hes hitting into it while hitting the snare at that part
@This is what she said nope, you got it lol
I can do this. Hold my sticks and hand me my beer.
Lmao
