Why aren't you the GOAT of drummers creating content on YT I will never understand, sir. No one comes even close with fun, inventive but also super helpful exercises that actually... well, help develop our playing and vocabulary on a kit. Thank you Mike. Coming from pretty much a hobbyist drummer who still likes to learn new things and to develop.
@mikeslessons I still go back and watch "Mike Johnston's Fake Double Bass" video from time to time just because the demonstration you do at the end is actually one of my all-time favorite drum solos lol
U got me into drums back in the drum lab days! High quality drum lessons for an affordable price was hardly a thing back then, you must have been a pioneer in that space looking back now. I remember some fire lessons on making it sound like double kick with a single pedal, and drag triplets around the kit for a spicy yet easy gospel style fill. Love that I found you here still doing your thing! My old RUclips channel still has some vids that I uploaded for some of the lessons lol. I’m sure you’ve helped countless drummers over the years. Keep doing you and much love from an old student back in 2009ish! ❤
Love that this is extension from one you had a bit ago. That one was Paradiddlediddle - Paradiddlediddle - Double Paradiddle - Swiss Triplet Swiss Triplet. You mix both of these together and then you'll really have your brain thinking. Thanks for this Mike!
What a great workout. This is by far the "hardest" set of patterns I've ever worked with, but even after only after working on it for on day so far, I can feel a difference even at the molasses speed of 40 that I'm currently at. (I know I know, slow to get fast but... You know... :) Anyways thanks a bunch. Looking forward to more content and considering masterclasses when money gets better.
Love it so far pretty helpful for both hands lead nice thanks Mike i am been a fan of your stuff you teach I think your are a good drum teacher keep the great work
Oh man, by day 2 of slowing this way down I can finally do the exercise note for note. I had no idea I sucked at flams but then again never spent much time practicing or playing flams in triplets like that. Awesome exercise Mike! I can see using this as a pre show warm up in the near future!
@@mikeslessons I sure am. I'm kind of a drum pad addict. I have my pad set up right in front of the TV and practice while watching TV and I watch hours of TV 😂
Wow this one is great! Can’t wait to get to the pad and start practising. I’ll also try to move the accents to the toms, it may sound original. Thank you so much for sharing these exercises, they help a lot 🙏🏻
Awesome to hear!! I was working on that this moring right after posting this and it was hella hard, but it made a killer melody. Now I just need to put a triplet based ostinato under it with my feet! :)
Great video Mike! Definitely looks like one that will put a spotlight on any weak links in this one 😅 Gonna add this to my ever expanding list of things to work on 😁
Nice brother. Ya, it was painfully obvious when I started working this up for this video that my teacher side was enjoying this exercise MUCH MORE than my student side, LOL.
That's awesome, so glad you like it. The notation for the full exercise is in the description. There shouldn't be any need to do Flam Accents in this exercise. Please let me know if I am misunderstanding your comment.
I’m not sure. We made this prototype (Aquarian and me) right before COVID and then things got put on hold for obvious reasons. Maybe it’s time to revisit the idea :)
@@tobiaswinter1358 Kinda. It’s not quite as dead, but it was designed to be the “quite” side for when I practice in hotels. So, one side for focusing on your clarity, and the other side for not driving everyone around you crazy, LOL
@@mikeslessons interesting idea! I don't like pads that have two polar opposite playing surfaces, I don't wanna go from one extreme to the other. May I suggest a diameter between 8 and max 10 inches? You aim for the center anyway, portability is key and I don't think snare stand compatability is really necessary...
Thank god that’s not correct. We wouldn’t have punk rock, gospel shout, be-bop, up tempo swing, train beats, drum’n bass, or a ton of other genres if it was. Speed is 100% relative to the genre and the song. Some styles of music require speed and some don’t. Groove on the other hand needs to be present no matter what the genre. Hope this helps :)
@@dalemoore9205 It wouldn’t be the first time, LOL. I’m here now so please explain your point to me so I can better understand where you’re coming from.
What a terrific exercise! It's got such a lovely melody to it too.
YO! Man, I was jamming with it on the kit, moving the lead hand to the toms... it sounded like a song! lol. Have fun with it Z :)

Reckon he is tbh.
Been watching since you taught us how to double pedal with one foot. Thanks man, your lessons are always helpful.

i see what you did there! very esthetic video! that plant changed everything ❤

Love it! Thanks Mike!
You have an amazing gift brother 🙏❤️🥁

I can already hear the melody of the drums just from this exercise. It will be saucy lick.
Similar to several past exercises working both sides. Another winner! Thanks Mike!

Great insperation , what drum pad model are you using and size ? like the sound of this one . Thinking of getting back on the drums
Thanks, as always, Mike!

What kind of metronome are you using? Love the visual display. Thank you!
Hi Mike, great exercise. Thanks. What's your practice pad and stand set-up? Sounds good and looks rock solid.
Still bringing the heat after all these years, dude. Much appreciated.
Just getting started :) 🙏🍵🍵🙏

I have a couple I do that seem to help as well:
1. RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRR / LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLL
2. RLRR RLRR / LRLL LRLL
Thank's😊
hi, what kind of practice pad is that? Great lesson - anything with flams is my jam!
Awe, glad you enjoyed the lesson. The pad is a prototype I made awhile back with Aquarian 🍵🙏🙏🍵
Like the exercise, But I have to do a flam triplet (Flam LR/Flma RL) to move the left limb and back. Very good sir, thank you!

That practice pad is beautiful!
Much appreciated! It’s a prototype that I made wit Aquarian right before COVID. We might have to revisit it :)
What app does Mike use for his metronome? I like the big #s.
The app is called Click I just found out. I literally paused the video 5 seconds before he mentioned that. Lol.
Hello Mike,
Is your linear patterns book still available ?
Thanks,
Lance.
Awesome book !
Interested in the new tats.
You should throw some inverted flamed mills in there
New signature pad incoming?
