The End Complete is so underrated! and Eaten Back to Life is one of the greatest death metal debuts of all time. Pierced from Within is Suffocation's best work imo, and i feel like the first three Deicide albums are god tier.
The End Complete and Slowly We Rot is the truest essence of Obituary. Pierced From Within is a brutal technical masterpiece, perhaps #1 for brutal technical death metal category, or Cryptopsy or Decapitated or Dying Fetus. First 3 Deicide are ungodly tier!

Also...RESSURECTION, Embalmed Existence.
Those two place very high.
OBITUARY and DEATH are just bedrock DM institutions.
I still try and listen to newer bands coming out, but I think I'm all set if music stopped being released today.

So knowledgeable. This is the best of this kind of list I’ve found online. Introduced me to some absolutely fantastic music. I’m relatively new to death metal (in terms of brutal and old school) and my car is filling up with CDs but it’s always the same recommendations online. But you knocked it out of the park even with your honourable mentions. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Love that everything here is 90's, and that's totally appropriate. It's definitely the golden era. I couldn't put together a top 10, but I do know that if I could only have 3 DM albums, they would be Entombed - Clandestine, Dismember - LAEFS and Deicide - S/T.
Amazing list. I love all the albums you showe. Personally I would add one more to it. Paradise Lost "Lost Paradise" For me it is one off the most "morbid & sinister " Death Metal albums ever.

Thank you for that perspective. Unleashed barely made it. Growing up in the 90's I heard first the following bands: Death, Dismember, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Entombed, Death.... is just the beginning II compilation, Pungent Stench, Gutted, Grave, Oppressor, Fleshgrind, Sepultura, Brutality, Hemdale, Sarcophagy, Sarcophagus, and Horror.

Well I've got a few albums to check out now. I'm not as deep into death metal but here's my favourites so far:
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
This album straight up sounds like a haunted castle. Opeth created such dark, enchanting soundscapes.
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
Honestly, there's like 3 other CC albums that could be here, but I chose The Bleeding because it's the most varied album they've ever done imo. And Chris Barnes sounds incredible.
Gorguts - Obscura
I literally just listened to this yesterday and it's the first time an album has actually unsettled me. But it also moved me in such a way that I can't quite explain. There's such a tragic feel to it. I'm still processing it, but it's immediately shot up to one of my favourite albums of all time.
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
This is never considered their worst album but I rarely see it high up on people's lists and I don't understand why. It's Death's most unique album imo, which is saying a lot. It's jazzy, melodic, heavy and intricate. Chuck fucking rocked too hard.
Excellent list. The variety in death metal allows everyone to have their own unique top albums.

Most lists like these should have a few crossovers that are on everyone's lists and then the rest is where the personal tastes take over. My buddies and I did one of these with a top 20 and we all had very few crossovers.....🤣
That was a few years ago and I went back and looked at my list and saw that some of my picks would change based on my listening habits since then. Not just bands but different albums from the same bands. For instance I had IVth Crusade from Bolt Thrower, but now I may go with In Battle There is No Law or Those Once Loyal. My favorite Death album is forever changing as well but Human has gotten the most play from me lately. Cause of Death will always be on my top 10 no matter, but I like it when people change it up and The End Complete is a really good album...👍
I always liked Indecent and Obscene over Like an Everflowing Stream, but Stream is a great album as well. Surprised to not see an Immolation album on your list, but that's because they're one of my favorites, so I'm biased.
I have a few weird ones that are on my list and it's not that they're obscure to knowledgeable death metal fans, but they just aren't thought of when people are thinking about DM bands.

1. Morbid Angel - Covenant
The most complete death metal album for me: thick guitar tone, relentless riffage and drums that sounds like an army marching.
2. Brutality - Screams of Anguish
Mixes the thick production of old school death metal with the melodies of tech death. The solos are out of this world.
3. Gorement - The Ending Quest
Unlike most OSDM records, this one has a melancholic vibe going for it instead of an infernal one. Unique and overlooked.
4. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Chuck and the boys need no introduction. This is basically the perfect tech death record and maybe has the best basslines in all of extreme metal.
5. Autopsy - Severed Survival
Absolutely rancid atmosphere and like “Individual Thought Patters” incredible bass by DiGiorgio.
6. At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Surrealistic, innovative and non-cheesy melodeath with violin solos and a progressive edge.
7. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Out of all the albums on here, this one has the “oldest” feel to it. Early riff festival and the most thrashy approach on here. This album also features Martin van Drunen’s best “psycho vocals”.
8. Bolt Thrower - …For Victory
This wouldn’t be a complete list without the bri’ish menace. Impressive how they managed to make the riffs so doomy yet so melodic and catchy at the same time.
9. Pan.Thy.Monium - Khaooohs and Kon-Fu-Sion
Side project of extreme metal legend Dan Swanö. Trippy atmosphere: It’s like jazz and death metal musicians took LSD together.
10. Demilich - Nespithe
Old school weirdness at its finest: mind melting riffs that sound like backwards jazz with distortion and alien-like burps.

Good top 10 death metal list simply cant exist without Obituary, Bolt Thrower, Death, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Carcass, CC (also didnt get why SFU is mentioned in some comments as crap, they are golden), Entombed/Entombed A.D. ,Grave, Suffocation, Immolation what I would like to see is top 10 in every dm subgenre, dm is rich enough to make separate. Also there are classics, but there are good new players too, my fav is Cruciamentum (everything is gold) and Assatur (launched first album, golden)

Im still relatively new to death metal. Iv only been listening to it for two years. Here are mine in no particular order...
*Human by Death:* I love all their albums but this is the sweet spot as it still has the brutal riffs of their earlier albums but also the more technical proggy sound on their later albums.
*Annihilation of the Wicked by Nile:* It's a brutal, technical masterpiece! The vocals are insane and the drumming and guitar work are spectacular! I love the production as well and I love the ancient Egyptian theme. Lashed to the Slave stick might be my favourite death metal song of all time!
*Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower:* It was one of the first death metal albums I bought so nostalgia is playing a big part. But I love the grove, the production and the riffs... the fucking riffs ❤. This album was a great way to go out on.
*Last One on Earth by Asphyx:* The best guitar tone in extreme metal and imo Martin van Drunen is the best vocalist in death metal and his best performance was on this album. I love how it's slow and doomy which may not be to everyones taste but I love it for that.
*None So Vile by Cryptopsy:* Brutal, technical, groovy and Satan himself on vocals. What's not to love?
*Nightmares Made Flesh by Bloodbath:* This got me into death metal and I love it just as much now as I did back then. As great as Mikel was on vocals Peters was better. Sorry. It has everything I want in a death metal album with heavy riffs, groove, killer vocals and perfect production.
*KILL by Cannibal Corpse:* As much as I love the Barnes era, I prefer the Corpsegirnder era from the mid 2000's onwards. Brutal while also being catchy as hell!
*Necroticism by Carcass:* While Heartwork is probably my favourite it's more of a melodeath album than a full blown death metal album. Nectroticism is a perfect death metal album from start to finish. I love how they used clipps from a documentary to introduce each song. It makes the album sound more creepy. As much as I love Heartwork and their later stuff, I often wonder what would of happened if they stuck to this sound.
*Covenant by Morbid Angel:* Got to have some Morbid Angel on here and this is their masterpiece! Lions Den, God of Emptiness, World of Shit need I say more? The guitar work is brilliant and the groove 😚🤏
*Effigy of the Forgotten by Suffocation:* This blew my mind when I first heard it. It sounds like flesh being ripped apart but the technicality is the reason why I keep coming back.

nice mentions in this video. I never really got into pure DM but recently getting into the old skool Florida bands. my favorite style in metal is thrash/death (sepultura, sodom, demolition hammer etc)
There is a handful of some really nice death thrash like Cannibal Corpse Eaten Back To Life, Malevolent Creation The Ten Commandments, Silence Vision, Epidemic Decameron, Hexx Morbid Reality, Sadus Chemical Exposure, Silent Death Stone Cold, Solstice Pray, Bloodfeast Kill For Pleasure.

Jeah, I d name Deicide 1st and Entombed Left.... and Dismember as good picks, but I d have chosen Leprosy from Death. I also would have mentioned The Crowns Deathrace King, since I think its most prob. the best melo death album ever to come out.

One of the 1st death metal CDs I ever heard and still my favorite of all time. DEICIDE. The demonic vocals is what makes it my favorite.

Excellent list. I prefer "Blessed are the sick" or "Altars of madness" to "Covenant".
From Napalm Death, my favorite is "Harmony corruption"

It's a good album. Definitely not top 10 material, a bit too hateful. I would rather have Deicide - Legion.
Surprised Nocturnus hasn't been mentioned by anyone (from the comments I skimmed over at least).
But Death, you can't go wrong as their entire catalog is damn legendary. After that it's a grab bag with Carcass, Obituary, etc. Throw in some tech death like Decapitated or perhaps some prog death such as Opeth (Blackwater Park FTW) and there you go.
Opeth and Nocturnus are quite low in my ranking. I would rather Decapitated, Vader, Nile, type stuff.
Abhorrence-Evoking the abomination and Vader-The ultimate incantations,masterpiece both.
I could go on and on, but Massacre~ From Beyond, and Pestilence~ Mallevs Maleficarvm, def deserve a mention! Oh, and if you can afford first pressings of these albums, ie analog, go for it! You'll prolly never play a cd again!😂

It'a so good to see someone rank Covenant above Altars. Not that Altars is bad of course, but Promised Land/ World of Shit, come on!
Might be a really hot take but for me the favorite C-Corpse album is Butchered At Birth. So filthy and rotten it lives up to the bands name. Right up there with it for me is The Bleeding and Eaten Back To Life. Tomb never did much for me compared to those other 3. It got a bit more intricate but the production seems a tad flatter.
Warmaster by Boltthrower is in my top 10.

Should be held as a pure historic example of the crossover of heavy/thrash metal to death metal...its one of the best albums to literally pinpoint the elements of both. As much as an important album as "hell awaits " by slayer for the same reason as a pivotsl moment between traditional metal and speed/thrash.

You did a great job on your list but it is very very clear that Morbid Angel altars of Madness should be number two and ever-flowing stream should be number one I'm sorry but you're way off all these other bands suck compared to those two albums

There's no question that metal, especially death metal is one, if not the angriest form of music. The music itself is aggressive, the lyrics are mostly violent.
It has a dark attitude and most members or fans look like they would kill you instantly, if they got a chance.
But in fact most fans or members of death metal are the complete opposite of what the music suggests.
I can just tell from my point of view, death metal is a way to let those negative feelings, that we all have out in a way that nobody gets hurt. I think the worst thing to do is, to deny the fact, that we all have darkness in our hearts. By trying to cover it up it may find a way out anyway, without being able to control it.

It's a great album, but so is Eaten Back To Life. The Bleeding too, basically Cannibal Corpse is a top 10 band, but I could not fit an album in my personal top ten.
