6. Cold Lake 5. Vanity/Nemesis 4. Into The Pandemonium Distinguished them from everything els at the time. Daring and original. I believe this album was a huge influence so many Goth Metal/Symphonic Black Metal bands. Love it. Interchangeable with number 3. 3. Monotheist 2. Morbid Tales 1. To Mega Therion. On a side note - The Emperor's Return version of Circle Of The Tyrants is my all time favorite Celtic Frost track ever!
Always great to see Chris in the co-captain chair for a ranking the albums episode. Thanks to him and to Pete for informative show for someone not familiar with the band.
Love the Frost 1. Morbid Tales / Emperor's Return 2. Into the pandemonium (I like the weirdness on this album more than most) 3. To Mega Therion 4. Monotheist (As an old Frost fan I haven't given this one the listening to I really should have - but I vow I will) 5. Vanity/Nemesis 6. Cold lake Also "Parched with thirst am I and dying" has some great original tracks you can't find elsewhere. And Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids" really should be considered for this list as both mainstays of CF were on this precursor to Morbid Tales.
The moaning vocal style on Into the Pandemonium is a personal tribute to Ross Williams of Christian Death. A masterpiece of an album in my eyes. I also love post-punk and goth and Christan Death, so great. The real problem for me with Cold Lake is: 1. The weak and thin/poor production 2. Toms voice style 3. Image and song titles. But the essence is Celtic Frost as far as riff style and compositions.
The impact of Celtic Frost on Therion and so many other bands is immense. I will never forget the impact of hearing Horus/Agressor by Hellhammer for the first in 1984. Made Venom sound like choir boys
Celtic Frost is one of my favorite metal bands and aside from Cold Lake, they have a solid discography. Here's my ranking: 6. Cold Lake 5. Vanity/Nemesis 4. Into the Pandemonium 3. Morbid Tales 2. To Mega Therion 1. Monotheist
"Into the Pandemonium" is in my top 5 fav albums of all time. It's such a creative album, it's a bit unfocused but that's also why I like it so much. I've never had a problem with the inclusion of a cover or the electronic "Pride", I think it all fits together so well and makes a perfect album for me. #2 is "To Mega Therion".
Pride I always skip. And I think I will never hear it again. To be honest is the worst song in my large cd collection. The rest of the album I listen to. Yes, he has some strange vocals here. But I dont mind as I also like the more gothic bands like for example Christian Death
@@Intermentor I can see that. For me, Pride definitely fits in with my love of weird Electronic and Techno stuff. I just respect how Warrior was brave enough to make those kinds of moves.
1) Morbid Tales 2) To Mega Therion 3) Into the Pandemonium 4) Monotheist 5) Vanity/Nemesis 6) Cold Lake Great band, really regret getting rid of my vinyl copies of the first three!
First song i heard by them was dying god into human flesh and i was blown. Second song i heard by them was mexican radio. And i just couldn't go further because i was just so thrown off my the style change that i gave up. Fortunately, recently i stumbled across some of tom g's interviews and saw that he seems to be a really cool dude. So i decided to check out hellhammer and the first celtic frost album. Now i'm hooked. Love this band.
Here’s my list 6. Monotheist (You guys said it best it’s a doom album and I’m not really into doom. It’s why I never really got into Triptykon). 5. Vanity Nemesis 4. Cold Lake (It’s not that bad folks sure it’s different but it’s good for what it is) 3. Into the Pandaemonium 2. To Mega Therion 1. Morbid Tales
Beast of a band, hearing these guys early albums when they dropped must've been completely awe inspiring, definitely set a new standard in metal in terms of heaviness as well as artistic creativity. Monotheist is my favourite of theirs though, one of my favourite albums ever from one of my favourite bands ever
Great ranking, guys. Have any of you heard the Norwegian band Order, featuring a couple of the original Mayhem members? They're basically the second coming of Celtic Frost for me. Their first ep, Folly Grandeur, is brilliant. Oh, and they cover Procreation (of the Wicked) on their debut album.
6. Vanity/Nemesis 5. Monotheist 4. Cold Lake 3. Into the Pandemonium 2. Morbid Tales 1. To Mega Therion I really like every single album they made, even Cold Lake. I guess that not being there at the time helps to take it as it is now. Morbid Tales is a fun record, a real headbanger. To Mega Therion on the other hand is as you said of Monotheist agonizingly heavy. A very well put together piece of art and unbeatable in my eyes.
Thanks for the video, Pete and Chris. So cool you had an opportunity to meet Reed and played a part in reconnecting him with Tom. 1. To Mega Therion (Giger Artwork, Best tunes - Circle, Jewel, Usurper, Meggido, Necromantical Screams!). 2. Monotheist (So freaking heavy...Ground is punishing). 3. Morbid Tales - (Into the Crypts of Rays!!!! Procreation of the Wicked). 4. Into the Pandemonium 5. Vanity/Nemesis 6. Cold Lake - I like them all, even aspects of the album that shall not be named... 🤘🏻🇨🇦
I was wondering if we would ever get a Ranking the Studio Albums of Celtic Frost. Great video! When i was 14/15 i first heard Morbid Tales, and i had that album in my CD player for months, it was that awesome. It is still one of my favorite Black Metal albums ever. I guess I'm in the minority but I love Into the Pandemonium and I rank it high on my list. I'm guessing people do not hold it in such high regards because it is too Avant-garde sounding, and it being such a departure from To Mega Therion. I dig the album now than I did then, perhaps because I am into 80s goth rock as well. It is an album where you either love it or hate it.
I've been a fan since 1984 7. Cold Lake 6. Vanity/Nemesis 5.Parched with Thirst Am I and Dying 4. Into the Pandemonium 3. Morbid Tales 2. To Mega Therion 1. Monotheist
Anyone knows what Reed St Mark 's up too lately? I've always loved his drumming, both in CF and Mind Funk. Any oher release with him on the drums (apart from the Francis X and the Bushmen Ep)? Pete, if you see him again, tell him he's one THE BEST drummers out there, one of the few thrash drummers with so much groove, and we miss him. Love that guy!
I’ll be honest I have never heard anything from Celtic Frost but I love Mind Funk. Agree with you on Reeds drumming. So I’m gonna have to check out Celtic Frost at least to hear the drumming on that.
What an Exelent Ranking by a Huge Groundbreaking band! I could not agree more by you guys rankings! I would like say to novice fans out there, Parched witth Thirst am I and Dying is another great introduction, which has some great Cold Lake re makes which give justice to some songs IMHO, as well as some Great heavy remixes overall, but this should Not overshadow the trilogy!
I love them! (As well as Hellhammer and Tryptikon) Into the Pandemonium is one of my favourite albums from the 80s, and Monotheist is my favourite album from the 00s

Great show!!! I haven’t pulled out Celtic Frost in a looooong time, I only have the first three… a lot of history with them! I have to grab the last three and give ‘em a listen
An amazingly diverse band which, in my opinion, has no bad albums. I really like all of them, including Cold Lake. I’m only 26 so I never got distracted by the band’s change of image back then. I’ve also never cared very much about lyrics, and for me the musical aspect of it is great. I can agree that the vocals are pretty weird but overall I really enjoy the album. Anyway, here’s my ranking: 1. To Mega Therion 2. Morbid Tales 3. Monotheist 4. Into the Pandemonium 5. Vanity / Nemesis 6. Cold Lake
I persoanlly love Into the Pandemonium precisely b/c of how eclectic it is, and how Tom & co really challenged themselves songwriting-wise. Monotheist is such a bludgeoning-ly dark and heavy record, my god, such a great swan song for a legendary extreme metal band.
Celtic Frost, great band! one of my favorite Extreme Metal bands ever. I love all their albums and EP's even "Cold Lake" and "Vanity / Nemesis", these two I see them more Thrash Metal than their typical Extreme early Black Metal sound. Obviously the abrupt style change kill them quickly now people understand way better changes like that.
I like all of these records. I would have no problem listening to any of them. 6) Into The Pandemonium (A bit too weird for my tastes - but still pretty good) 5) Cold Lake (I don't dislike this like some others do, obviously. There are some good tracks, for sure) 4) Vanity/Nemesis (I've changed these last three a bunch of times...) 3) Monotheist (Amazing return - wish they'd kept going - I can't get into Triptykon for some reason) 2) Morbid Tales (The first I owned, so there's some nostalgia here as well) 1) To Mega Therion (Flawless album - right down to the artwork) Thanks Pete & Chris! It's surprising that it took this long for you to do this catalog. Are you at all into Anacrusis? I'd love a ranking show on them!
Despite what a lot of people think, no bad records here. I've listened to all of these albums a ton. How often does a band have 2 landmark albums from different subgenres? Ugh! 6. Cold Lake 5. Monotheist 4. Vanity/Nemesis 3. Morbid Tales 2. To Mega Therion 1. Into the Pandemonium
Celtic Frost, since way back in the past..( just like the Boston Keltics)lol. I didn't know that much about them back then, but SOT changed that. Good band. Thanks Pete, (and Chris.)
Brought Into The Pandemonium the day it was released, a long time ago and enjoy all their albums even Cold Lake, how things change as notice that one of the high brow newspapers here in the UK, The Guardian has an in depth feature on Celtic Frost on their website.
Oh man this is gonna suck! 1. Morbid Tales/Emperor’s Return 2. To Mega Therion 3. Monotheist 4. Vanity/Nemesis 5. Cold Lake 6. Into the Pandemonium * now I love the operatic and orchestral pieces . . As a classical fan, Prog fan, etc. those are pretty damn good on Pandemonium. . But the album kinda drags for me. So, Cold Lake . . Yeah it’s the nadir, and would be great with a different moniker (i.e. Load/ReLoad) and I grant that idea, but it’s a bit more straightforward and even. I like the fact that Tom went for that FM hit sound, and he pulls it off! Gotta give him his dues . . He and Quorthon are the damn David Bowie(s) of Black Metal!
I've been listening to Frost since the mid 80's. Pandemonium will always be my favorite Frost album, but Cold Lake is still a total favorite of mine! I don't care if it is universally hated, the album has always stuck with me.
Lisa's husband, Andy here. I have to disagree with some of what is said here. Back in the eighties Into the Pandemonium and Voivod's Dimension Hatross totally stand out as the best 'extreme' metal of its time. I agree when I first heard this album I said what the 'f'' is this? Genius, different and ahead of its time, that's what it was. I miss the eighties and these guys were considered as thrash metal then but with the two albums I have mentioned, you can't go wrong if you want to test the boundaries in every sense. All the best from the U.K. 👍
Saw Celtic frost, Voi Vod, and whiplash @ L'amour's in Brooklyn 1986. I don't remember much. My ears always hurt when I left that place. Voi Vod came on after whiplash with gas masks on. Frost was never my favorite but definitely the best band that night. If that sez anything!
Mentioning the mistake of Cold Lak,you could also mention the mistake of becoming Celtic Frost because hellhammer was very popular and that last song they did,Blood Insanity, with the Heavy! bass intro and the Quorthon-esque sounding vocals was darn good
You haven't covered 2 of my favourite bands yet Pete, Stryper and W.A.S.P. You HAVE TO hear those new Stryper records you are really missing out, they are exceptional. And that comes from an agnostic 23 year old from Greece, so i am not biased at all.
Discovered Celtic Frost when I was offered a a box of Noise Records cheap back in the 80s.Coroner,Kreator,Helloween and Celtic Frost. To Mega Therion,Into the Pandermodium were ground breaking albums.Disowned them after Cold Lake.Almost didn’t buy the album because of that back photo.Oliver Amberg ‘s guitar work on it is atrocious. My fave is probably ITP
The video Metal VHS interview magazines of the day had Thomas Gabriel Fischer saying Celtic as it sounds or seems phonically but he changed to 'keltic' in recent years, so yeah, right either way technically, there's no wrong way to say it and I prefer the C sound of it
Cold Lake didn't kill them. They were never that popular to begin with. They were a underground cult fav but they never sold much. So that album may have disappointed the older fans but they really didn't have much to lose. Tom only looks bad on it because it didn't work. But at the time he said we wasn't selling albums so we said fuck it and did Cold Lake. We had bills to pay and were desperate. Gotta respect the honesty. Sadly the comeback album sold worst than all of them. Just wasn't meant to happen for this band.
Guess you nailed it... almost 😉 01 morbid Tales 02 to mega Therion 03 into the pandemonium 04 monotheist 05 vanity/nemesis 06 [ignore mode] Guess i would put hellhammer on 3 if included Tryptikon never did it for me.
Gotta give some kudos for Pandemonium - I hated stuff like "One In Their Pride" or "Tristesses De La Lune" at first back then, but as I was too lazy to skip 'em, they grew on me. In hindsight, those tracks may even helped to pave ky way into Electronic/Hip-Hop, who knows. Anyway, for me, it's always been Sssseltic, not Keltic.
I rewatched this video after recently getting the Danse Macabre box set. After revisiting the catalog, I think Into the Pandemonium is a hot mess and I would put it at the very bottom of the list. Cold Lake is actually a good album. I would put To Mega Therion at the top, Morbid Tales second, Monotheist third, Vanity/Nemesis fourth, Cold Lake fifth and Into the Pandemonium last.
Monotheist is the pinnacle to me - the culmination of their efforts, the point at which Frost's means caught up with their ambition. Monotheist To Mega Therion Into the Pandemonium Morbid Tales Vanity/Nemesis Cold Lake
1. Morbid Tales/ Emperors Return 2. To Mega Therion 3. Monotheist 4. Into The Pandemonium 5. Vanity.... 6. Cold Lake The top tier changes sometimes I rank Monotheist higher...
There is a big Christian Death influence on "Into The Pandemonium". I actually had a letter published in Metal Forces magazine defending their poor review of the album.
Morbid Tales was Heavy, but To Megatherion even won the critics over . I always have considered them a Death Metal band . Lyrically and musically they're closer to Obituary and Morbid Angel than Marduk . They had songs about Absu, Tiamat and Azagthoth which became prevalent in Death Metal. Tom didn't have a raspy Donald Duck Vocal, nor did they sing much about Christian Satanism, or play a lot of fast tremolo picking type of riffs. Other than some bad production quality there was little to relate their music to second wave Norwegian Black Metal. Even the production standards when measured by Black Metal standards, Celtic Frost albums were state of the art .
Agree with this, although I wouldn't say there a death metal exactly. They sound like a primordial stew of extreme metal. I hear elements of death, doom, black, thrash and sludge but I wouldn't call them any of those. Such a unique and great band.
@@bluewinter6660 I have the Satanic Rites demo. To me it sounds like Traditional NWOBHM early Saxon type Metal performed with a very limited amount of musical skills, and recorded on a cheap cassette player boombox ghetto blaster portable stereo with dirty heads. Sometimes music is labeled Punk, or Black Metal just because the sound quality is horrible. This was amateur Traditional Metal played by guys with primitive musical skills and recorded poorly. The only reason it was associated with Black Metal is by accident, they were struggling to sound like Angel Witch and wound up sounding like a very poor amateur type of Garage Punk Rock band. If you only like Black Metal performances by novice level musicians that are recorded extremely bad, I guess that this is as Kvlt as Fvck . Personally I only own the Satanic Rites demo for the novelty of liking Morbid Tales and To Megatherion when they sounded like a Real band. I find all of Hellhammer difficult to listen to, other than the pure unique style of the Apocalyptic Raids rendition of the song Triumph of Death I find that they were an awful band. Celtic Frost is Heavier, more atmospheric, produced better, and just more interesting than the Hellhammer project. As far as badly produced Necro Black Metal performed with out of tune guitars I prefer Dark Evil bands that don't sound like absolute cheap garbage. Bands like Demonic Christ, and Acheron are just as Evil without sounding like low fi trash. Albums are expensive, I don't know any good reason to spend $20 on something that probably cost $1 to record. If I just want to waste money and listen to noise, I will just sit down by a construction site and make a bonfire out of $100 bills. That makes about as much sense as buying a bunch of tinny sounding low fi Necro Black Metal Albums. At least I can actually hear the sounds of the jackhammers are making. Probably clearer than the drums on a lot of Black Metal Albums
Cold Lake wasn't nearly as bad as people think. Just close your eyes, it sounds like a thrash band's last cocaine freakout album before their post-rehab over-produced commercial comeback. They "sold out" way before any other thrash/black metal band, proving that Celtic Frost were ahead of their time in practically every way.
Into The Pandemonium is an incredible album! Started avant-garde metal (black metal) ...original, heavy and plenty of 'oohs'
Absolutely. If you don't like "Into the Pandemonium" you don't understand Celtic Frost.

2) Morbid Tales (The first I owned, so there's some nostalgia here as well)
1) To Mega Therion (Flawless album - right down to the artwork)
Thanks Pete & Chris! It's surprising that it took this long for you to do this catalog.
Are you at all into Anacrusis? I'd love a ranking show on them!
Despite what a lot of people think, no bad records here. I've listened to all of these albums a ton. How often does a band have 2 landmark albums from different subgenres? Ugh!
6. Cold Lake
5. Monotheist
4. Vanity/Nemesis
3. Morbid Tales
2. To Mega Therion
1. Into the Pandemonium
I've been waiting for this awesome
Cold Lake is my favorite! It was my first Frost album, and I love it.
I love that album too. I know it's universally hated, but yet it has always stuck with me!
It’s not MY favorite. I know that.
love that Tom G Warrior and Reed St Mark story Pete, really cool
Celtic Frost, since way back in the past..( just like the Boston Keltics)lol. I didn't know that much about them back then, but SOT changed that. Good band. Thanks Pete, (and Chris.)
Brought Into The Pandemonium the day it was released, a long time ago and enjoy all their albums even Cold Lake, how things change as notice that one of the high brow newspapers here in the UK, The Guardian has an in depth feature on Celtic Frost on their website.
Add me onto the list of Pandemonium lovers. A true avant garde masterpiece.
Cold lake is underated as hell, exactly like angel rat by voivod. All albums by Celtic Frost is good in my humble opinion👍🤘
I just listened to Cold Lake. It’s bad.
Haha..ok..the taste is like the ass. Split..
@@magnuswettermark8293 You should see a doctor about that.
i have celtic frosts first album and it's crushing i love it a lot
Loved this! I would love to have a few beers with you guys while listening to some of this!!! Morbid Tales for me though 👍🍺
1. To mega therion
2. Monotheist
3. Morbid tales
4. Into the pandemonium
5. Vanity/nemesis
6. Cold lake
Oh man this is gonna suck!
1. Morbid Tales/Emperor’s Return
2. To Mega Therion
3. Monotheist
4. Vanity/Nemesis
5. Cold Lake
6. Into the Pandemonium
* now I love the operatic and orchestral pieces .
I love the story about Reed & Tom great stuff. My top 6 is very similar
I really like Into the Pandemonium
1. Morbid Tales / Emperor's Return
2. Monotheist
3. To Mega Therion
4. Vanity/Nemesis
5. Into the pandemonium
6. Cold lake
I've been listening to Frost since the mid 80's. Pandemonium will always be my favorite Frost album, but Cold Lake is still a total favorite of mine! I don't care if it is universally hated, the album has always stuck with me.
Yeah, it seems to me the biggest issue is their look? I don't know. The music should be what's important but that's just me.
Cool story about Reed & Tom! I've got to get Monotheist
I like the vocals on Into the Pandemonium because I like Christian Death
A fan since early ‘85…".prior to “To Mega Therion”. This said, none of their releases comes close to the 2006 magnum opus, “Monotheist”.
Mentioning the mistake of Cold Lak,you could also mention the mistake of becoming Celtic Frost because hellhammer was very popular and that last song they did,Blood Insanity, with the Heavy! bass intro and the Quorthon-esque sounding vocals was darn good
Hellhammer were never popular.
Reed St Mark rocks!!
6.Cold Lake
5.Monotheist
4.Into the Pandemonium
3.Vanity/Nemesis
2.To Megatherion
1.Morbid Tales
You haven't covered 2 of my favourite bands yet Pete, Stryper and W.A.S.P. You HAVE TO hear those new Stryper records you are really missing out, they are exceptional. And that comes from an agnostic 23 year old from Greece, so i am not biased at all.
Pete said he is not a fan of W.A.S.P. I don’t know about stryper
Sadly he isn't into either. W.A.S.P. are beyond greatness.
Wasn't into Stryper in the 1980s. W.A.SP. had a couple hits.
The last couple of Stryper's album are phenomenal. Oh yea Jesus is God Almighty.
@@MikeTyson_II W.A.S.P. were not about the hits. Their deep tracks were for the most always better.
@@liquidvizionsmadferit yea I thought about it for awhile 🤔 W.A.SP in general were a pretty alright band. Blackie stays Lawless.🤘🏼
I agree about Cold Lake Mr Alo.It’s my least favourite of CF’s albums. It is still better than a lotta bands whole discographies
Their last album is pretty cool, but I think I like Triptykon more
They had such an Influence on so many bands from back in the day......
Love hellhammer and Celtic Frost
Cold Lake breakdown - funny as Spinal Tap !
Are you going to rank the albums of Opeth?
Heyheyhey!!!!!! Uuhh!!!! Martin Ain!
Monotheist is a great album! And I'm in the minority in liking Cold Lake, though it shouldn't have been called Celtic Frost
celtic frost were one of the developers for black metal death metal thrash metal
1.Morbid Tales
2.To Mega Therion
3.Into the Pandemonium
4.Monotheist
5.Vanity Nemesis
6.Cold Lake
Guess you nailed it... almost 😉
01 morbid Tales
02 to mega Therion
03 into the pandemonium
04 monotheist
05 vanity/nemesis
06 [ignore mode]
Guess i would put hellhammer on 3 if included
Tryptikon never did it for me.
Pete, are you going to rank Zebra's catalog? Or not a fan?
Are you guys a fan of the band Necrophagia?
Monotheist is the pinnacle to me - the culmination of their efforts, the point at which Frost's means caught up with their ambition.
Monotheist
To Mega Therion
Into the Pandemonium
Morbid Tales
Vanity/Nemesis
Cold Lake
👍🥃 Totally agree. They put it all together on Monotheist!
1. Morbid Tales/ Emperors Return
2. To Mega Therion
3. Monotheist
4. Into The Pandemonium
5. Vanity....
6. Cold Lake
The top tier changes sometimes I rank Monotheist higher...
There is a big Christian Death influence on "Into The Pandemonium". I actually had a letter published in Metal Forces magazine defending their poor review of the album.
Meaning I defended the album from their unfair review.
I agree definite CD vibes on ITP. Good call !
If you want to see Reed St Mark jam n dethroned emperor. I have a 2018 video on my page of him during a cover of it. Check it out fans. 🤘🤘🤘💀
Hey, "Cherry Orchards" is an awesome title
Warrant “ Cherry Pie “ !
Like to see a top 10 on songs that were covered by Metallica 🤘
That " Cold Lake " rumor still present to this day is really strange . It never existed........😂😂😂
Cheers ya morbids 🍺
If you think Cold Lake is bad , You should listen to the demo Prototype
Hellhammer made the Black metal Sound on Satanic Rites.
Can you guys tackle Cannibal corpse next?
Cold Lake wasn't nearly as bad as people think. Just close your eyes, it sounds like a thrash band's last cocaine freakout album before their post-rehab over-produced commercial comeback. They "sold out" way before any other thrash/black metal band, proving that Celtic Frost were ahead of their time in practically every way.
I think Cold Lake is great! If it's a hair metal album, it's the most warped and damaged hair metal album ever made (in a good way, of course) !
💃🤘
Tom pronounces it Keltic. Also, "The guy from Noise records" Chris met Karl?
