Usually, the number attached to a Plus (magnifying) lens is Diopters, a measure of optical power. 15X probably means 15 diopters. For example, a 3 diopter lens will bring focus at its reciprocal or 1/3 of a meter. A 15 diopter lens would therefore focus at 1/15th of a meter.
That's the 'maximum focus distance' of a macro lens. The 'minimum focus distance' is = X/(DX + 1) where X is the closest focus distance of the camera lens (in meters) and D is the diopter strength of the macro lens.
Agreed. I wish there was a lens in between the stock lens and these macro lenses. Shooting stuff at around 1 ft - 1.5 ft is too close for stock lens and too far away for these macro lenses.
Hello Sir. and thanks for taking time to make the video review that I asked you to do, a while ago. I already bought it and I tried it but,I don't know if you gonna agree with me but, if you pay attention on the corners, the footage looks stretched, I didn't tried yet if changing some settings, it could be corrected but I don't think so, if you have any idea of how it could be corrected, please let me know, and again, more than appropriated for this and all videos that you post. For sure, the best channel about Gopro so far.
Good day! Yes, the footage is indeed stretched on the edges. This can be fixed to some degree by adjusting the lens setting when editing. I filmed in wide and changing it to Linear in post will help a bit with this. I could also crop it a bit since I filmed it in 5.3K and exported in 4K. You’re right though. It’s not perfect and does have that stretching. Thank you for your support!
I found that same listing for this lens - it's still $18.69. I also found the other ($40) lenses. They're _probably_ similar in quality. The biggest difference I can see (from the listings) is that the cheaper one ships from China, so it will take weeks to get it. Many of the more costly models (which ship directly from an Amazon warehouse) are at your door in just a couple of days.
Hi. Thx for sharing your experience. Certainly to have one is a good idea..this was an interesting video and you did clarify pretty well scope of action for that lens..😉
I now have the Neewer 15x that I bought thanks to your video. I love it so far, it appears crisp and sharp all the way to the edge. My problem is, I'm moving in too close so my main subject is blurred (flower) and everything behind it is sharp. With the tiny screen, its difficult to gauge whether my subject of interest is in focus. How did you manage that?
Hi! I know this video was posted a while back, but I'm curious if you tried this lens on the Hero 12 Black model? I work in a marine biology lab, and we use these cameras to capture timelapse footage of tiny animals in fish tanks. Unfortunately, since we have to keep the cameras too close to the fish tanks, the videos are always out of focus! Just curious if this lens fit a Hero 12 Black (if you have one), and what you thought of its performance? Thanks!!
Yes, this does fit the Hero 12 Black and it works well on the camera. Thanks to GoPro not changing the lens cover design on their GoPro since the Hero 9 this is compatible with the Hero 9-Hero 12. Thanks!
This is very interesting. I was wondering why I can’t get too close with my GoPro Hero 12. I’ve also noticed that skin tones tend to look really over sharpened, especially closer. I tend to set my settings to low sharpness when I’m vlogging. Or I just film in the flat color profile. I’ve also been seeing some RUclips videos about the Insta360 ace pro cameras having focus issue problems, but I don’t think people understand the minimum focus distance on these cameras. Thank you for explaining it.
Good video but I was hoping to see comparison footage with and without the macro lens compared to the standard lens. That would've been extra helpful, but I appreciate the video.
I’ve been vlogging with a GoPro Hero 10 and recently purchased a Sony FX30. I don’t bring my Sony camera with me everywhere for the same reasons you mentioned. And the GoPro isn’t as cinematic for B-roll. I will try this product out. Thanks for sharing. ✌️😎
You’re welcome. In addition to the macro lens, if you’re into grading and color grading footage the GoPro does offer some nice flexibility with this when combining that Native White Balance, Flat Color, and Low Sharpness settings.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thanks for the additional information. I was color grading due to the fact that I would try to match my drone footage. I’ll look into what you suggested. Thanks again.
Thanks for bringing this lens to everyones attention. One problem your link for the lens is not correct but I am sure I will find it. Kind regards Stevie
Hello! Is this macro lens advisable for food vids? I plan on using my go pro as a B-cam and I don't want to add external lenses to my ZV1 since it might damage the motors of the camera
Yeah this should not affect the normal waterproof specs of the GoPro to the specified depths. It seems the GoPro is also waterproof to those same specs even with the lens cover off.
I am a dentist too and considering this. This lens in the video looks good to take the Hero 9 from 12" to 6" minimum focal distance - we normally work about 6-12" away from patients from what I have read. My worry is the focal depth will be too low if people are reporting background blur here. Loupe cameras are really expensive! Ragecams have a$1089 6x zoom modded hero 9 for dentists. Also consider backbone modified cameras as they will sell you a modded camera for $900 CAD (or mod your one for $300 CAD) allow actual lens changes to C or CS mount types. The most expensive futudent, OXO 4k, Dentilight iOcam and Sunoptic models have these CS or C style lens shapes and lenses from 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 25mm. The lenses are $10-15 each from chinese sites so should be able to get something good with trial and error. There is a whole world of foot switches, 12v DC battery power supplies, lenses, microscope cameras with sonyIMX377 sensors and HDMI/USB C output and wifi transmitter usb sticks, head mounts that you could rig something up with for far less than big brands but patients might run a mile!
Technically, the GoPro is waterproof without the lens cover installed. So yes, it would be. This is what GoPro Support told me when I asked about this a while back: “Yes, the camera will still be waterproof without the lens cover. However, the lens cover does add protection to the camera. If you will be using the camera without the lens cover, I suggest to ensure that you keep the camera from bumps, crash, etc., that can directly scratch or damage the lens.”
Does anyone make an inexpensive telephoto lens for the hero11? I know about the back-bone mod but...it's a bit pricey plus I loose the regular functionality of my go pro Thanks 👍
@@GreatDayForAHike hey thanks for the follow up... I keep searching but there are some cool car lights and star lapse features on the 11 that I can seem to replicate with my Panasonic g95 kindofsortof but not quite right... If you follow my meaning... If tried running through the star app from one of your videos but I can quit get the right look...like the go pro 11 and car lights time lapse feature.
Heyyy i didn't know about the existance of the back-bone mod! That's pretty cool, but insanely expensive 🤣 Might as well buy a mirrorless camera at this point
I appreciate this outside-the-box ideas and products. I hope you do more of these. Great video.
Thank you.
What is the best Gopro Lens setting for this macro lens? Linear or Wide? or another? Thanks.

Great thought and you’re probably right. Appreciate your input!

@BryWorYT Thanks for your feedback and details.
I don't really want to shoot macro, but would like a 2ft focus instead of their infinity focus. What are the options for that?
Agreed. I wish there was a lens in between the stock lens and these macro lenses. Shooting stuff at around 1 ft - 1.5 ft is too close for stock lens and too far away for these macro lenses.
