I'm 64 and have a great, great desire to get into sheet metal fabrication. Back in the day I did Pebble Beach quality paintwork and in 1990 I painted my last car. It was a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III, three different shades of blue that were so close most people would think it was one color, it placed 1st in its class. Fast forward to sitting the bench as a goldsmith for over 20 yrs., I would have zero problems making a car if I could make it out of gold. The biggest problem I would have is just understanding the movement of steel compared to gold. I know I have the skill, I get all the glancing blows of the hammer and how to push and direct the metal, it's just guidance for a bit. I'd love to take your classes but bad luck and shitty finances kills it for me. I'm really glad you're able to get vids out consistently now, I don't miss any of them. Thanks Travis
I don't understand why you don't have a million Subs!I see other channels on here that are absolutely giving wrong information on how to in this trade and destroying this Trade-Art that i spent 3 years in Vocational School 35 years ago. These guys have all these subs that have no ideal what the hell their doing.
Travis, As you said at the beginning, a video on using a TIG could be intimidating. As have seen my fair share but you did was excellent in my eyes. You have mirrored all of the "Best Practices" of the TIG welding universe. Grass Hopper, you have snatched the pebble from the masters hand! Great explanation & instruction. I don't have a TIG yet, but you have reinforced my knowledge. Thanks so much. DK, Omaha.
Thank you Travis for taking the time to share your knowledge. Tig welding is definitely an art, and tig welding 18,19,or 20 gauge steel is very hard to do with no guidance. It takes a lot of practice and just when you think you kind of got the hang of it something goes wrong. Travis have you ever tried using an .040 tungsten and .023 filler wire ? Thanks again brother....
Adding wire causes more warping, seems like if you weld a very tight gap you can start out & finish out with a spot of wire then fuse it together without wire. I’ve done this with 0 warp on 20 gauge.
A bit late to the party here. Ironically the only talent I have shown for tig welding is thin sheet metal. Can only put it down to distant Italian heritage and coach work. Question on stripping discs, Travis. What grit do you use or recommend?
Great video! My question is what if I use a soft wire like esab ez grind .023 wire in my mig? Im building a 64 chevy crew cab. I need to do the roof. Going to cut an after market roof skin and add to the center with 20 gauge metal. You said the mig weld is hard and brittle. Will the ez grid wire work and stay flexible? Thanks Red

Well done even with equipment and software issues. You did very well.
Thank you for pushing forward!

Thank you so much glad you enjoy them!! Hope things start looking up for you.
Just simply brilliant. Without doubt the best well presented and intelligent explanation I ever seen or heard. Greeting from the UK.
Wow, thank you!

Not the .023 they want $44 per pound I canceled my order. .035 will have to do
Good information. Thanks!
What’s the rule for the distance the tungsten should be out from the end of the cup?
I think it’s half the distance of the diameter of cup. Or until it doesn’t work 🤣 and contaminates it.

Zero warp sorry not buying it. The smallest amount of heat will move metal. I don’t like undercut edges is why I use filler rod.

A strip disc is a special type of disc. It does not really have different grits.
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS ok. did not know that. interesting
Some are harder and some are softer..Depends on brand …

I’m personally not a fan of it. But use some test panels and try it first.
