I've always loved this song, but it also has a meaning behind it too.
Sting was a teacher before his music career, so he incorporated things into his songs.
The verse cought between the Scylla & Charybdis were mythical sea creatures, in the verse Mephistopheles is not your name, I know what you're up to just the same. He's calling someone or something as cunning as the devil.
It could be a song about a sneaky controlling person, or a bad habit, but in the end, he says the person's face will turn to alabaster, when you find your servent is your master.
He used his expertise in English and literature to teach a story, that what you are controlled by you can overcome and control it.

    • @markharris1125
      @markharris1125 2 года назад

Excellent. Have we ever heard from any of his students? "I was drawing this picture of this lady, and I took it up to Mr Sumner and he said, that's excellent, Timmy, now what colour is her face, and I said, it's white, Mr Sumner, and he said alabaster, Timmy, it's alabaster."

I've always imagined this as sort of an apprentices tale. Something like Harry Potter learning from his teachers and then taking over the school. He went to learn things he couldn't learn in college like magic. Loved this song for 30+ years...Listened to the BSide of synchronicity every night for many months.

Sting was going through a divorce at the time. He wrote this song, Every Breath You Take, and King of Pain about different ways his divorce made him feel. Funny enough, those three tracks are all in sequence on the Synchronicity album, almost like you can hear his descent into madness

When I first heard this song I kind of envisioned this young guy who was a sorcerer's apprentice. The sorcerer used him for menial labor and didn't really want to teach him serious magic but would teach him enough to pull him along. The young apprentice studied on his on and would secretly read the books of the sorcerer and would practice at night time on his own. Eventually he learned a spell to overpower the sorcerer and take his power from him. That is the story I envisioned when listening to this song. :) Not sure that is what Sting envisioned but that is what my mind saw.

This is a beautiful song about wishing to possess the beloved, represented in tbe imagery of a ring that binds one around another's finger.
In the last verse, Sting is describing a kind of magic spell that reverses the balance of power.
"I will turn your face to alabaster...when you find your servant is your master.."
"-YOU'LL be wrapoed around MY finger..."
I noticed that throughout the song there are references to magic, casting spells, etc. 'Mephistophiles" is of course, the elusuve demon that advised FAUST.
The scene at the end of the video where he topples all of candles , made me think of Prospero burning all of his books and throwing them into the sea...

Dont Stand by Me and Roxamme are other great songs from The Police. I love this one too, and like you I find it relaxing music and Stings voice blends in with it so well. They were great musically, there seemed to be great thought about mixing the instruments and the voice together that made each record special in my opinion. Now its 1am so goodnight everyone God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK

My best, worst joke. "When Sting retires, you think they'll call him Stung?" In all seriousness, I love The Police. I need to own more of their work! So many great songs I know I haven't even heard yet. EDIT: I have to elaborate, because just listening to this song again...the spooky synths that ring out, that echoing watery chord, that strategic percussion. The way it all culminates and crescendos into the chorus...It gives me goosebumps. And Sting's vocals here are fantastic.

I think this song is about a relationship between a married woman & a younger man

Hi Javon! Sting has such an amazing voice. Did you know he sung the backing vocals for Dire Straits - Money for Nothing? An amazing track on its own but it excels with Stings voice added for sure. Fields of Gold is just beautiful by Sting on his own. Check it out 👍🏻🎼🎼

Is this a fan's common insider knowledge?
Of this I never heard before in my life, but back in the day, I was just close to being a true fan after all.
Brilliant song, truly one of their greatest imo. Also the rest of their catalogue isn't even worse.

it doesn't matter if you listen to The Police or Sting solo. It is always 100% Sting , with all his curiosity for new sounds, his musical genius and his enormous talent. And that for 50 years now on a level that only a few reach.

I was pretty young still when this album came out, only 15, and I saw them play live in Austin TX. UB40 was the opener. Amazing show! I know little about Sting's personal life but he wrote some twisted songs on this album. This song is dark and the music really conveys that. I never really enjoyed much of Stings solo career but I love The Police. Shame that he and Stewart Copeland could not get along.

A wonderful version of this song is sung by Rufus Wainwright. At a celebration for Sting (I guess a birthday) Sting had all these other artists on stage to sing his songs.. and Rufus really did a great job.

Your interpretation was spot on. I have always taken it as seeking carnal knowledge in the form of an affair. She started taking him for granted, and he turned all of the OTHER tricks she taught him AGAINST her....beat her at her own game, so to speak.

It's about sex, Jayvee. He starts seeing a married woman who can 'teach' him stuff he can't learn in college. At first, she has power over him because he is inexperienced. Eventually, he learns how to please her and takes control of the situation. That is when the rolls are reversed and she is wrapped around his finger.
