Stewart Copeland is one of the top, most sophisticatedly skilled drummers ever. Great rabbit hole to go down.

Synchronicity is a masterpiece of an album, their magnum opus. So many great tracks. From what I understand, they got along poorly during the recording, notably Stewart Copeland and Sting. Each member recorded their tracks separately and sometimes deleted each other's works from what I've heard. The producer had a difficult time managing the band and the recordings...

I really like how you review the song history and meaning after every play as too many reactors seem to miss a song's meaning without any investigation.

Stewart Copeland is my favorite drummer. His delicate work with the hi hat, use of a large assortment of percussion pieces, and the sharp CRACK of his snares, are just iconic.

One of Sting's more mysterious lyrics set to a mesmerizing tune. There is the Faust legend with Mephistopheles, but there's more to this one. Certainly the student becomes the master. Not sure if it's metaphorical or not, but it is a masterpiece in any case.

Synchronicity was a good album. I still have it(vinyl). Got it for Christmas in 84. Got to see them in concert in 84. Their "Synchronicity Tour" with Journey & the Fixx. The Fixx was the opening act. It was one of the best concerts I went to. King Of Pain was my favorite song on the album.

There is a concert video of this song where a camera man is only focused on Stewart Copeland(the drummer) that shows his brilliance as a percussionist.

The Police and the lead singer Sting in his solo career are 🔥🔥🔥. The Police "DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME" (original video); Sting "FORTRESS AROUND YOUR HEART" (option 2 is best video quality), "FRAGILE" and DESERT ROSE" (original videos). These songs are awesome!!! ❤

As I see it there are two layers of metaphors here - the superficial metaphor is a master/apprentice relationship, and there's sort of an undertone of sorcery or alchemy - "things they would not teach me of in college". The imagery that springs to mind for me is of the old Disney cartoon the Sorcerer's apprentice (but without the mouse). The apprentice spends most of the song in a servile position, but somehow gets the upper hand and subjugates his old master. But all of that might just be a metaphor for a romantic relationship where he is enchanted by a woman and mistreated, but he again manages to turn the tables. Love is also something that they don't teach in college.

PS Synchronicity is a connecting principle, linked to the invisible.

Most of the songs on the album “Syncronicity” were written by Sting during the time of breakup and divorce from his first wife. Some of history’s best music is born during times filled with turmoil, pain, anger, and perceived betrayal. You can hear it on many of the album’s cuts. This album is a masterpiece, but took its toll on the band.

Its weird. They started out this really obscure band virtually nobody had heard of and within 5 years they were the biggest band in the world. Fast forward 40 years and its back to where they started with 99% of young American’s under the age of 25 having little to no awareness of the band. A band whose last album topped the Billboard album charts for 4 MONTHS in 1983, with even Michael Jackson’s thriller struggling to compete where it’s the police rather than MJ who hold the record of THE most played song in the history of radio. (But yet 95% of Americans have no idea of who they are!)

What you described with Robert Johnson is referred to as a Faustian bargain. It's just another way is saying deal with the Devil.

Good song, no doubt about it. Hated it when it came out but in hindsight and age I get it. Def more commercial later but still had great songs but Musically!! Their 1st 2-3 albums were way better,
Commented b4 about a certain song that you prob know but don’t realize, in a big movie with a big star that you may or may NOT have seen 😂..I’m tellin ya ,you gotta do it… Roxanne.
1st album, 1st hit, put them on the map

To me, all it ever meant was Sting’s way of telling her that they may not be married yet but he’s already married to her by heart.
The gold band of promise and disappointment wrapped around our fingers.
It went hand in hand with Every Breath You Take where he gets a little OCD and stalkerish about her.
