Probably the most fun, well-done reaction I've seen to this film. Lot of people moaning in the comments about your laughter/jokes. Well, I'm a USMC war Veteran, laughed right along with you, and here's my message to them: It's a freakin' Rambo movie. It's fiction. Lighten up.
They had exactly the reaction I'd expected. Awe. Excitement. Enjoyment. It's not till the end that we hit the wall of reality with the Oscar winning speech about Nam.
They got real serious at the right time though! And thank you for your service!
I disagree with this being a "Rambo" movie. Technically, i suppose it is. But this is a story of a man's pain, the heartache of war, his PTSD, etc. The 80's movies were all flag-waving propaganda, and were stupid.
The bit at the end when he talks about all his friends dying and all this, it was all improvised
Yeah love their reactions, very genuine and engaging, its a over the top movie, with some funny scenes, political touches, and genuinly ..horribly.. human touch in the end..
Which makes a awesome movie, with a little real, true, statement, with the fun..
I loved rambo, had the toys lol, but yeah can still approliciate, and respect, the real, and sometimes horrible, aspects of war/military service
One thing to understand about the general context of the movie and the timeframe it came from, this was just after the Vietnam war had ended and Vietnam war veterans were treated quite harshly, many ended up homeless and suffering from various trauma and it wasn't unusual for such men to be socially shunned or treated particularly harshly by law enforcement. If anything Rambo was one of the first movies to show this attitude as being "wrong'.
Absolutely. This series is about the many social issues that surrounded a war that nobody understood, that just went on, and on, for almost 20 years.
It might be nice if some month, just for grins and giggles, you watched only movies about a particular issue or event. Exploring an event that way can open new levels of understanding, and appreciation.😉
@@Boomerbox2024 I for one am quite happy to see "kids" (i'm almost 50, was born just after the Vietnam war ended) take an interests in those "classic" movies and the social issues they portrayed. Times were different back then but not "that" different.
It was a movie, total fiction..
That where the future movies lost their way, it became all about the cheesy 80's action and lost the heart of the story and the character.

Actually, it's based on a true story.
My dad served 20 years and was in Vietnam. I served for 20 years too and got to see his eyes every time someone thanked me for my service. No one ever thank him. He has since passed away.

Sometimes Cam&Zay aren't the sharpest tool. They will probably wonder why the newborn is steaming in "The Color Purple" during the delivery.

He looked like a Vietnam vet drifter.. because thanks to the US government so generously supporting the troops they sent over there after they came home psychologically and physically broken, alot of em ended up homeless. Luckily my dad who was army infantry didnt end up homeless but he had major issues.
In 1982 he didn't look like a thug. I saw this film when it was first released to video NO ONE thought he looked like a thug. Were you even around then? People weren't the fashionistas you think they were.
Stallone actually made the jump from the cliff to the tree, and when you hear him yell, he broke two ribs when he hit the tree. I’ve always enjoyed this movie.

Also the stuntman driving the police in the bike chase broke his back when the car landed after the railway track jump.

You are right jay. Even though its not specified in the movie about Teasle, the book goes into more detail that Teasle resented rambo. Korean was the forgotten war as Vietman got more "recognition" shall we say
Yeah, that's right. A lot of Korean war vets did resent the Vietnam generation because they felt like their war was overlooked because Vietnam pretty much happened right after Korea
And he earned a Distinguished Service Cross in Korea. He was an ex marine.
"God didn't create Rambo. I did." - My absolute FAVORITE scene in the movie!
I know the big "emotional payoff" scene at the end is widely considered the "BEST". (very well acted by Stallone) But I just love Troutman.
My husband only talked a few times about returning from Vietnam. He spoke of being called a baby killer, he was spit on when he arrived home at the airport, it was horrific. At the airport he threw all his army apparel, and his duffel bag everything went into trash at the airport he tried to be invisible. You do have to remember that Vietnam was in the late 60s early 70s and the young man that went to war this is how they were treated. Now they died, or is dying from Agent Orange and severe PTSD. My husband is 73 now I am very surprised he has made it this far because of agent orange he has severe COPD. He has had quadruple heart bypass and he also has 13 stents. But having to live with a Vietnam vet it been difficult? It’s still breaks my heart when he has the bad nightmares the screaming and the thrashing about when they’re asleep and you were told never to wake him up. I know he had a psychiatrist at one session ask him did he dream about Vietnam and his response was he relived it. 🙏

14:55 - LOL "Why is he steaming?" That is funny, but remember, dudes, the dead cop was bleeding out warm blood in a very cold climate. That's why his body was "steaming". It was actually a pretty accurate choice for the director to make to keep with realism. :)
So excited for you two to be reacting to this awesome film. It’s different from the rest of the series in many ways… but the ending always makes me emotional. Some of Stallone’s best acting work are in that last ten minutes alone.

You're absolutely right. It's not often you can pinpoint the best of someone's work like that. He didn't just surpass himself in that scene, it's not just Stallone's best acting, that's better than most.
Galth steaming is actually a touch of class. If you look at Rambo he steams too, and this happens because the weather is under 0 degrees (you can see it because they all steam when they breathe), and they sweated because of the stress and the action warming up their bodies.
When Galth's collegues arrive, he doesn't steam anymore because he's cold now being dead.
For such steaming you need three things. Overly heated body, temperature below 15C degree and humidity in the air. We can sometimes see this effect on the football pitch, when footballers heads and upper bodies are steaming, especialy with some rain to it. This scene was in the narrow valley with a mountain stream surrounded by foreest and with low temperature, I would say between 5-10C degree. There was no indications, that temperature was below zero celcius. I agree that this steaming was a great touch.
Zero degrees C is only 32 degrees F. I'm pretty sure the comment you are replying to is talking about zero F which is -17.8 degrees C. Plenty cold enough to produce steam off the human body. @@Gamaoyabi
Wrong. The temperature doesn't need to be as low as 0 degrees. Body steam can form at approximately 45 degrees Fahrenheit or 7.22 degrees Celsius .

What I love about the movie is the ending Rambo is bloody, broken and the Colonel who is kinda a stand in for the government, wrapping a coat around him and taking him, kinda saying that the it's sorta the governments duty to help these guy after all the fighting they went through.
It's really hard watching you laugh so hard when you know how this film ends.
I LOVE Rambo. You need to watch all of them as well. There are 5 in total. I think the 4th was a perfect ending, but I enjoyed Last Blood. My favorite part of First Blood is the ending monologue by Rambo.
Last blood felt forced and low grade. There was no reason for that film to be made. Felt too much like a straight to dvd action flick. If you replaced Stallone with any small time actor that movie would have been seen by nobody. Not even trying to be edgy, but I love the rest of the films in the series and that one was just so disappointing.

I completely disagree. I think Last Blood was a great movie. Even better than part 3 which I also really like although the directors cut is better than the theatrical version. I think it was the perfect ending to the Rambo movies.

The movie was filmed in Canada near a town called Hope in the province of British Columbia, to this day the place is a mecca for Rambo fans, there is a huge statue that was put up and some of the more iconic place such as the bridge are popular tourist spots.
I have a mug shot of Stalone in the Hope police station with Rambos name and the BC station.
This was made just 7 years after the fall of Saigon. I remember the push to have a memorial created for the Vietnam veterans. Liberals said they didn’t deserve one. These men did what their country asked them to, and they were spit on when they got home. The time context of this movie is everything.
Fun fact Stallone broke six bones in his ribs jumping off the cliff.
I guess there's nothing you can't laugh at, but this reaction was just way over the top.

Rambo’s choices in what buildings he destroyed in the town were mostly practical from a soldier’s perspective.
Blowing up the gas station gives the enemy (the cops) no opportunity to fill their vehicles, and blowing up the ammo shop limits their artillery. Blew out the lights to keep himself safe from snipers. Then focused on the police station (the enemy base).
This movie opened a lot of eyes in the ‘80s about how poorly this country treated its veterans (Vietnam vets especially), and did a lot toward shifting the narrative of war away from the abuse and neglect of the soldiers for being *drafted* to fight in wars they didn’t cause and didn’t have any control over.
you know bodies steam with open wounds when its cold, i remember when my brother went hunting and got a deer and the amount of steam that came out was crazy.
The stuntman in the police car broke his back when he jumped the railroad track, and then completed the scene. That's dedication.
He is steaming because of blood loss and the cold ambient temperature. Realism was a thing
This is undoubtedly the best movie in the Rambo saga, a deep script, good action scenes and Stallone's best performance in a movie.
Respect for you young men. Y'all were laughing it up throughout the show, (which is fine) but recognized the seriousness of the end.
In the book Col Troutman has to kill Rambo at the end because he's too far gone from ptsd and hurting civilians
We will never know the hell that our veterans have gone through in past wars. That's why every time you see a veteran, just thank them for their service. Takes two seconds of your time and means the world to them. If you see them in a restaurant, pay for their dinner. it's the least we can do to say how much we appreciate what they've done for us😊

Yeah I was about 8 when i first saw it, was more into the giant knife and the headband and and the toys and actions figures and running around the woods and whatnot. Did not really know what the "Vietnam war' until many years later when we started learning about it in school and since i'm Canadian it wasn't really discussed much in class.

I'd rather see practical effects and stunts than cgi any day.
It seemed, to me anyway, more like a political drama than an action film. It was probably the first movie from a Vietnam veteran's perspective--the trauma, the mistreatment, the alienation. To this day, some wounds have yet to heal.
You absolutely need to check out the movie Deer Hunter. A difficult watch, but it takes you right in there with the type of conflict and mayhem the war caused soldiers during and after the war. It's definitely a crazy good movie with a great cast.
I have mixed feelings about The Deer Hunter. It's waaaaay too long. The second half is great, but the first half drags on and on and on. They could have handled the pre-war stuff in 20-30 minutes, and we would have had all the info and insight we needed for the second half. I would love to see a fan edit that cuts out 45 minutes of the film, because the bulk of it is fantastic.

Great reaction guys! This movie was pretty much a sleeper hit, it grew and grew in popularity over time with cable and what we had back then called VCRs. The huge success of the sequel took the Rambo character to a whole other level, becoming a pop culture icon. I remember on my ride to work in the morning DJ's on the radio would play a comedy skit called " Mr Rambo's Neighborhood" which was a spoof on Mr Rogers neighborhood. My point being your movie does not get satirized unless its a big hit and Rambo 2 sure was, cant wait for your reaction to it. A couple of other Sly favorites of mine are Tango and Cash, an action comedy film and Cliff hanger, an action thriller film.
I served from 76-79 right at the end of Vietnam by about a few months...and people treated my like shit. I had a hard time trying to get a job after I got out as people didn't want to hire veterans and even after I got a job most of the people in the company didn't want to work with me. It was a fucked up time. That's what life is about...

This is easily the best of the Rambo series in terms of channeling emotion through character and story. 2 and 3 are just okay, more action-oriented. Rambo from 2008 or so I think gets it sort of back on the right track, but nothing compares to First Blood.

The song played at the end is actually played throughout the entire movie. It’s the music you hear at the very beginning when he is visiting his friend. It’s softly played throughout the movie, it’s then played in a faster upbeat version when he rams through the car barrier, and then finally at the very end they play it with the lyrics. When you listen to the lyrics and realize that it’s the theme of the movie, the whole thing just hits different.

Been a long week for me. I am so happy you two uploaded a video, made my day. BTW, it was real cold up in those hills and the dead cop was still 98 degrees, and his blood. I film a lot of outdoor content and have been wounded in the winter before, it's interesting to see steam coming off of a wound - lol
You two are so great to watch! I love the Rambo movies; your banter helped lighten the mood a bit. Interesting tidbit: I was mistaken as a child of Operation Babylift. My Mom was blonde/blue eyed, I resemble my filipino father black hair/brown eyes/olive skin.
First Blood was the only Rambo I ever saw, ( I have it on DVD and Steel Book) and I saw it many times - it was so perfect I never wanted to see any sequels.
For old timers it begins and ends in this perfect movie.
As for the Sheriff hating him, he was a Korean Veteran who looked down on Vietnam Vets as Vermin.
My dad is an expert on the Vietnam War. He taught college courses about it. I met a lot of vets with him when I was a kid and listened to their stories.
So much unimaginable pain.
He once told me that there are no happy stories about Vietnam and so far nothing I’ve experienced has proven him wrong.
Just an FYI. The National Guard goes through the exact same training right along side regular army. They learn everything a full time soldier does. But they wouldn't be any match for a well seasoned Green Beret.

I love this movie, and your review. I was hoping ya'll would cover this one day, and so glad you both enjoyed it the way it should be. With that said, . I grew up in the Army. My dad did 3 tours in Vietnam, and they were treated very unfairly upon returning home. I know its just a movie, but It definitely covered the injustice of their unfair treatment. I agree with your point, I never thought once to myself during the whole movie, that Rambo should be dead. It just has a better flow when you don't overthink a movie. One of Sylvesters best acting roles.
I must say, I never thought of Rambo First Blood as a comedy. lol Stallone is great once again.
Action + Comedy? You have to see Stallone in "Demolition Man" IMO one of his best movies.

The National Guard is military, just not fulltime. They still have to go through the same basic training as fulltime and they have access to the same weapons as fulltime. The National Guard units have to go through the training and testing as the fulltime and have to score the same.
Cam&Zay there was a different ending to this movie where Col Trautman had killed John Rambo, but somehow he became a hero in this movie. N this was also based from a book where in the scene where he grabs the little boy in the forest Rambo supposedly had murder the little boy. Glad that U guys enjoyed this movie.

Great reaction. When I was in basic training we had a drill search named Rambo and they actually made us all watch this movie. Better than doing PT. Definitely watch the rest number four is the most intense and my favorite.

Not only did the US not "win" the Vietnam War, but it was not even a "stalemate" as some claim. The purpose was to prevent the spread of Communism, and specifically, stopping North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam and going Communist. After the US left, the South quickly fell, and North created a united country, which has been one Vietnam for 50 years. It's gotten a little better in the last few years, but it was a repressive dictatorship for decades after, and to some extent, still is.
The sheriff was bleeding out during Rambo's tearful speech, but was conveniently forgotten.
The way I understood Rambos return to town is what Troutman said, win by attrition. No gas to refill cars, blew up the 2nd hand car lot, took their electricity away and then blew up the gun store so they can't get more/new weapons.

The person who owns the bike also owns the car that exploded, works at the hunting shop, his wife works at the gas station and his father works at the police station. And the mine shaft was on the land they recently bought.
I love the Rambo series. I was a teenager when i first watched this movie and i saw it with my best friend. The difference though was when my best friend and I watched it we were mesmerised. But honestly I think you guys were stoned off of your asses and I was enjoying watching you guys react to the movie more than I ever enjoyed the movie. Several details (spoiler alert):

The Sheriff's Office was rebuilt by the movie producers as payment for using it. The first movie scenes were shot last, during the rebuild, hence the painters in the hallway.

During the fingerprinting scene, Sylvester Stallone was told by the producer to make the scene realistic and really give "the cops" a hard time. The actors really got upset over it, including Brian Dennehey's sheriff character, and you can see the tension. If you look carefully, when the sheriff tells Rambo to "do exactly as you are told", you can almost see Sylvester Stallone starting to crack a smile, as he knew he portrayed his character well.

The "scars" on Rambo's back were, of course, prop makeup. During the hose down scene, they kept coming loose and had to be reapplied.

During the fall onto the tree, Sylvester Stallone actually broke several ribs, as he was doing his own stunt from a shorter height.

Shot in Hope, BC. Not everyone in town was happy about it.

And one last one, in the scene where Rambo hits the officer in the nose, he actually went too far and actually broke the actor's nose. The taped up nose later on was real bandaging.
And one more one more: There's a version with an alternate ending where Rambo commits suicide.
I saw his movie in a theater the year it came out. 'Rambo' was brand new to us as 'unknown' Sylvester Stallone only became an icon a few years earlier when 'Rocky' was released. Interestng facts; The town scenes were filmed in Hope B.C. Canada and the wilderness scenes were shot in North Vancouver B.C. (my home town). The film crew had a locked storage trailer in the woods for all the prop guns and one night it was broken into and they were stolen. It was fun for us to see all the town scenes as we had been to Hope many times. Theirs still a statue there and one of the cafes have memorabilia inside. The purple police cars are what the R.C.M.P. actually drove at that time. The ambulance was an actual British Columbia Ambulance Service vehicle. The mountains of North Vancouver have 2 river canyons, Capilano an Lynn canyon. They keep North Shore Rescue busy to this day. Many peple have even died doing cliff diving in to the water. Vancouver became 'Hollywood North' starting in the '80's. It's always fun watching films shot North of the border and being portrayed as american cities. To many to mention but 'Deadpool' and the entire 'X Files' series are two examples. My first time watching your reaction video. Yes, the movie was entertaining but so were you guys! 👍👍

Destroying the gas station and the sporting goods store means no gas and no bullets for the enemy.
The way you two’s expression changed COMPLETELY from having fun with the action to absolute sadness when Rambo started telling the story about his friend….. people don’t know, usually, how much of a patriot he is, the character they created. (Rambo II, the final scene, shows that more clearly as Rambo gives a closing monologue) It’s somewhat overlooked by many, the horrors of war, especially Vietnam……
So the "Cave" he ducked into that the nasty guards blew up with the LAW (light antitank weapon) was actually an abandoned mine shaft. While the movie wasn't meant to be taken too seriously (the story line was cheesy), it did a good job illustrating that the victims of war come in many ways. Please never forget the 22 vets that commit suicide every day.
I’ve watch this movie like a million times but I never really listen to the last 10 minutes monologue. It got me crying, so sad and unjust how veterans were and are treated. Thank you for the reaction. 😢

I grew up in this era and while I can't say it was SOP everywhere I will say that in my many travels remote town sheriff's and cops were either one of two things:
The most helpful, genuine good civil servant you'd ever hope to meet.
or
THIS, a sadist with a badge that rules their roost with intimidation, corruption, and violence.
It's still around, but back then it was an established, expected well-worn tradition.
As the old saying states: those times were _different._

Yes, the "Weekend Warriors" have access to all the Weapons, depending on purpose of your unit.....
In the mine, Rambo knew that the first thing that would be done was an airshaft, and escape exit in case of cave-in......
In my Opinion, Parts 2 & 3 have some unbelievable parts, Rambo (4) and Last Blood (5) are back the the believable action......

In the scene timestamped above, Sylvester actually fractured a couple of ribs and the cut on his bicep was real, too
Stallone broke ribs and punctured his lung doing the tree stunt
What a lot of people don't understand when watching the end when Rambo is destroying the town is this...During his monologue, he talks about how he was harassed by the public. He was spit on, called names, etc, etc. When he's destroying the town, he's getting back at the public that harassed him all that time.
As great as this movie is, there's a lot of information about the characters that you don't get. To truly understand what's going on in Teasel's mind and Rambo's mind, you should really read the book. The book is fantastic and definitely worth the read, especially if you enjoyed the movie.

Guys, at the time this movie was made we were only 10-12 years removed from the Vietnam War, solders of that particular war were looked down on, keep in mind also... when this movie was made the term PTSD wasn't even known. This film followed by "Platoon" were the two films that opened up the discussion for Vietnam Vets.

The police car jump, the stuntman broke his back. The Poncho he made was improvised and found just out there on the ground. And the scene where he fell down the tree branches was real. He broke his ribs so the pain you heard were real. (Not sure about the high jump, not sure who did that.)
So this movie really blew up parts of a real town. It was the first time this was done anywhere. Also, car safety wasn't the way it is now. Ford Pintos were renowned for blowing up since the gas tanks were so poorly placed in the back of the car.
This movie is the exact moment that modern action movies started. Before this they were all B-movie shlock like death wish or the various Charlton Heston crap that was being made. From Leathal Weapon to John Wick, Rambo is part of the DNA.
At the end Rambo is in total war mental statement: ruining electricity, destroying enemy area buildings, making chaos around the target etc. Very good PTSD movie, they touched the switch between the pacifist and the war machine. Rambo doesn't enjoy a single moment it's just his inplanted reaction. Remember when the colonal said they should leave him and few weeks later they can just pick him up easily. If you guys like movies about wrong situation management check out Falling Down with Michael Douglas.
Those stories at the end are not created script, He engaged with real soldiers who told him their war stories because he wanted people to know what some of these guys went thru!! This movie did not do well at the time, and in hind sight many are saying Stalone should have won an Oscar!!
No he didn’t get shot in the eye. It was a ricochet from the rocks all around him. And that wasn’t an effect they added with the steam coming off the body. It was naturally happening and it was captured on film. Just shows the conditions.
When you watch current action movies, remember that the people making them grew up on these movies. With all the CGI and martial arts training, they can't improve on this stuff.
