I can't agree with this single pilot episode beating out the entirety of Helluva boss, but I will say that it blows the Helluva Boss pilot out the water. Hazbin just has way more of a narrative hook and polish.

One detail of Alastor’s character I absolutely adore, is how he’s one of the few characters in this show who doesn’t swear. I don’t mean that as some holier than thou mentality, (to be fair I swear a lot), but presumably he was a talk show host in his lifetime, and so because of that, he had to be wary of saying crude stuff or swearing on air, a trait he’s carried on into the afterlife. Despite how demented Alastor is, and his threats of violence, not once in the pilot does he curse. 😌. Unless you consider the part in his song when he rhymes “Hell” with tell.
it also shows how he tries to maintian an air of class compared to literally everyone else
We know that he was a serial killer that worked as a radio host in the early 1900s, he's from New Orleans and he has a twisted morale code.
The interesting fact back when the "Day in the life of Radio Demon" comic was up is that we get to see Alastor swear, but it is _exclusively_ under his breath. He maintains a positive, composed demeanor because that's his way of demonstrating strength.
Alister has so a twisted moral code, but hey at least he actually has one, unlike most other sinners.
I really like that aspect of his character. Despite all the bad things he’s done and his utter lack of remorse for his actions, he does have some lines that he would never cross.
Alister won’t harm others who he considers weak and even despises those who would take advantage of the weak, plus he would also never harm a child and if he ever did find an abandoned child he would go as far as to take them in and raise them until they were self sufficient enough to survive on their own.
I love that Viv made a character that is considered to be a monster even by hell standards and still made him likable and an actually a somewhat upstanding guy.
@@HardcoreLevelingBaka I believe the child thing was a predominant head canon of sorts, but yeah. It's bizarre to think that one of Hell's most dangerous beings has a degree of morality. But if you think of it, that might be *precisely* why he is feared. Coupled with his powers, status as an Overlord, and cannibalism, the fact that he has a sense of being a good guy in a world of demons would make him unpredictable.
It's a stretch of reverse psychology, but it makes sense. In a world that is spun by sinners, fear the bloody saint.
I hope you watch Helluva Boss too, that show is incredible. My favorite thing about this pilot is definitely the characters. Charlie is such a kind, optimistic soul and her singing is absolutely beautiful. Vaggie is the perfect supportive girlfriend for her. Angel Dust is just plain hilarious, but also pretty tragic. And Alastor is so delightfully terrifying and his 1920's radio announcer voice is amazing. I'm so glad it's finally getting a full series.

I’m getting left in the dust… Though I’d say I’m more of an Angle Dust rather than for Charlie. Angel Dust got the most traumatic experience out of the people in the show. And that’s what I like to see in a character
She should watch the "Addict" music video for Hazbin Hotel too.
I love the effects with Alastor. Classic old timey radio voice with a generous helping of dark magic and mayhem.
Also love Charlie, such a happy soul out of hell really makes me want to cheer her on.

Well they removed any Voodoo related stuff for the actual series with him and made it music related out of fear of morons crying over a Creole man using part of his heritage.
It never gets old seeing the Hazbin Hotel pilot. I love the stuff Viz has created
Angeldust also pushes Cherrie-bomb out of the way when the egg is about to shoot them during the turf-war, he didn't know that it would only immobilize him. He was willing to sacrifice himself for her.
Something thing that is very interesting about Charlie is the fact that you can tell so much about her character based on the fact she is the 2nd-8th strongest being in Hell and how others view and treat her. The hierarchy in Hell is Lucifer(Sin of Pride) > Charlie / rest of the Seven Deadly Sins > the Ars Goetia > Overlords(powerful sinners) > sinners/some Hell born demons > Hell born demons like Succubi > Imps and Hellhounds. *Lilith is also somewhere on that list but we've got no idea on where on the hierarchy she actually falls in power, in terms of official rank she's right beside Lucifer but actual power we've got no clue*. Katie and all the demons in the news station are normal sinners and lesser hell born yet look at how they treat Charlie, a being that could kill all of them effortlessly. The only thing respected in Hell is shows of power and Charlie doesn't use her powers to hurt anyone so everyone sees her as a joke.
Satan actually represents wrath, so he'd be in the same ballpark as the rest of the demon lords who represent each cardinal sin
@@falloutfreek1992 Thanks apparently they expanded on that at some point. Last I knew Lucifer and Satan were separate from the Seven Deadly Sins but yeah they clarified that so I'll fix it. Though there still would be decent gap in strength between him and the rest of the Sins as it would be the only way he could become King of Hell and maintain that position.

and she does actually use those extreme powers its just there used in such a silly way that even we the audience dont take it seriously.
she shows her full demon form a view times with full imp like horns only when shes in the height of her song sequences which arnt metaphorical.
shes LITERALLY teleporting warping around making stuff poff in and out of exitence when shes singing and doing all the "silly" things but legit not special effects or exageratted.
like the fireworks that is across a ENTIRE MEGA CITY and she does it without a sweat in the first scenes etc etc.
shes only scared at "weird" things shes never scene before or darker ascpects of demon powers she never dwelled into hence alastors "hell rune glitch stare" and tentacles crushing the blimp creep her out like someone seeing something gross.
Side note: Charlie's stance on redemption is my favorite! So often in shows we see that the lesson in redemption is that ANYONE can change. Charlie's view is everyone deserves to have the choice to try and change. Basically the hotel is open for anyone and that includes Alastor, even if he thinks of the whole thing as nothing but entertainment. I love it because redemption is something that takes lots of work and doesnt always work out. Some people relapse and sometimes it fails. But the important things is that people are allowed the opportunity to try.
The look Vaggie gives her when she says "try to relax, Vaggie" says she considers Charlie to be the best thing that's ever happened to her, and well worth going to Hell for.
Not only does Micheal Kovoch (Jax in TADC & N in Murder Drones) voice Angel Dust, but Charlie's singing voice is Elsie Lovelock who voices Uzi in Murder Dones.
Oh man I'm excited I love this series since the first time I saw the pilot years ago when it came out. I hope she really enjoys it too🎉🎉 spread the joy
Of what i know Alastor, was during his Life, a Radio Host in the 30's in Louisiana.
And he was also a Cannibalistic Serial killer that used Voodoo rituals/magic.
Wich is why he's so powerfull once in Hell.
He was killed by accident by a hunter, while he was trying to discard the remains of his last victime.

This and helluva boss are both masterpieces that deserve the praise they get
As many people have pointed out, this is the pilot and Hazbin Hotel proper is due to air some time next year. There have been some changes, namely in the cast and character design, but obviously the full extent of the changes remains to be seen.
As for the established lore? This takes place in the same universe as Helluva Boss, and there's bits of world-building present in both shows, as well as some tidbits from streams ViziePop and the cast did over the years while working on Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
A few key details revealed is that there are two kinds of 'demons' in this setting; Sinners, i.e. the souls of dead humans who are consigned to Hell for not meeting Heaven's exacting standards of spiritual purity, as well as Hellborn(unofficial term, but let's roll with it), who are the native denizens of Hell that we would generally associate with the concept of demons, such as imps, succubi and incubi, hellhounds, and various other miscellaneous types of Hellborn. Lucifer, the fallen angel and the first Sinner, reigns supreme over Hell, and Charlie is of course his daughter by his wife Lilith, who is a human Sinner, whilst Charlie herself is a Hellborn.
Sinners are, for all intents and purposes, immortal and can only be killed by angelic weaponry(hence why there are angels carrying out the extermination to curb overpopulation in Hell). Most Hellborn aren't immortal and they can even die of old age, but they aren't human either and can handle a cartoonish amount of punishment before dying.
ViziePop has also stated on a few occasions that things like homosexuality, being transgender or transsexual is not considered a sin in this setting and that Sinners are sent to Hell for other reasons, and while those reasons can be incredibly inane and trivial(Charlie's song implies porn addiction is a sin worthy of getting sent to Hell after all), most of the people in Hell are murderers, rapists, and things that are unambiguously immoral and unethical. We don't know what most of the characters did to earn a ticket to Hell, but we DO know what Alastor did to get sent to Hell, and while I won't spoil anything in that regard, Alastor DEFINITELY deserves to be in Hell and he's generally accepted to be one of the most evil characters in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, even if he's the likeable kind of evil where he has class and standards instead of just being a dick.

The funny thing is the only thing keeping that entire newsroom from turning into a sequel to Iron Lung is that Charlie massively held back

The general basis of the show remains, but effectively the actions within the pilot itself are no longer canonical. It still serves well setting a general tone
Glad you checked Hazbin, it shows a lot of promising ideas and I can't wait for it to debut on TV (yup, it was actually picked up and it's going to have a legit TV show).

You can also check Helluva Boss: another show from the same creator (VivziePop AKA Vivienne Medrano) set in the same fictional universe. Helluva is now in the middle of its second season and it too is very entertaining and unhinged although, keep in mind its pilot has been just declared non-canon by Viv.

Hazbin Hotel is great and it's the only few you can react fully to without worries. Do Lackadaisy next you will love it. Faye Mata who voices Katie Killjoy also voiced Myne from Rising of the Shield Hero.
You know.. kinda Katie ment the old term of "gay"... well Charlie is bi and her girlfriend Vaggie is a lesbian, but "Gay" used to have a second meaning. Comes from french = "Cheerful, joyful" etc" so she truly doesn't wanna touch her (infact she did..even a bad touch) because she is so positiv and happy.

18:13 I NEVER NOTICED THIS! The name plate on the desk when Charlie says "You'll be on Easy Street" says MISS HANIGAN! Miss Hanigan was the primary antagonist on the Broadway musical/movie Annie, she ran the orphanage Annie lived at. She and her brother Rooster, sing a song called "Easy Street" in the show. That's a really cool Easter Egg.
39:06 Another Annie reference. She and "Daddy Warbucks" the rich guy who adopted her, go on a radio show, and on the show, the singing quartet and the host sing a song called "You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile"
One thing I liked is that if you watch during the fight with the snake. Angel dust is clearly worried about Cherri’s safety cause he takes a hit for her. To me that puts a different perspective on that fight.
Based on the little information we have of Vaggie which is she's a lesbian, was born and lived in Venezuela, is afraid of and dislikes men, has the eye patch on her eye, is a good and nice person, loves her girlfriend Charlie, and will do anything to help Charlie's dream it's a really sad story about how she likely ended up in Hell. She was likely living in constant discrimination and physical abuse when she was alive and was possibly even r*ped which led to her fear and hating men. One day she was most likely attacked by some number of people and tried to defend herself which resulted in her possibly killing one of the attackers and the others killed her likely by shooting her in the face specifically her eye. So she was sent to Hell because she's a lesbian and possibly hurt or killed someone when trying to defend herself. It's also possible that instead she got attacked and only injured which made her lose her eye and she then committed suicide by hanging herself which could explain why she has the mark around her neck and that it might not be a choker she wears. So because she didn't do anything bad in life she has a normal human looking demon form with only the eyepatch indicating how she died. And this is supported by things like Angel is a spider demon and was part of the mafia which is a web of crime, Alastor is a deer demon because when he was dealing with a person he killed and was planning to eat was killed by a hunter that was after a deer, Husker is a cheshire demon with a patterns and colours centered around gambling, and how the entire main cast is gay, lesbian, bi, pan, asexual, etc. This could be untrue as it's only a theory but based on all the little hints being picked out and put together it starts to paint this kind of picture.
Here's hoping that when the show premieres, Charlie and Vaggie's relationship will be explored more

This was pretty good, i followed the production for years. Seeing the pilot completed was amazing, so excited to see more
my theory since this came out is that the season 1 finale reveal will be that Charlie is doing exactly what Aleister is doing: She wasn't actually trying to rehabilitate anyone, she was trying to impress daddy with a creative new form of torture. She's just really good at playing her wholesome character and suckering people into believing that she believes in them. When mom and dad come to visit in the finale, I am predicting right now that she's gonna go mask-off and they're going to be extremely unimpressed, leading to Charlie becoming the first one to actually get rehabilitated by the hotel. Season 2 is when it ACTUALLY opens to genuinely try to rehabilitate people.
This show was greenlit for Season 1 on Amazon Prime, January 2024. So I hope you get to watch the rest of it, cause it's gonna be lit imo.

I love Alastor the Radio Demon, i've really got to get back to doing impersonation videos before the series drops proper with the new voice. It's always great to see new reactions to this series, and i love how much unapologetic joy you have watching it.
Also so surprised to see a reference to the Corpse Bride, most people compare it to the bit with Dr Facilier from The Princess & The Frog aka the Shadow man.

Hazbin Hotel is getting an series later this year, which is good for them! They've worked really hard to make it a reality. Of course, I am gonna have to suggest you also watch Helluvaboss which is the main show Vizipop has been making that is set in the same hell as Hazbin Hotel and four imps, the lowest rank of native demons in hell, as they run a assassination/protection buisness. It's very similar in humor but there is a lot of emphasis on characters as well, one of the main one is voiced by Richard Steven Horvtiz who you main know as the guy who voiced Invader Zim, Billy from the Grim Adventures, and Dagget from Angry Beavers.
Charlie's singing voice is the voice of Uzi in Murder Drones. And Angel Dust's is N.

It's oddly refreshing to see a positive reaction to this pilot in 2023 after years of witnessing it recieve endless and often unfair hate, whether due to its fans, the amount of swearing and adult humor, or Vivzie herself.
As an animation fanatic who hopes to work in the field one day, regardless of how I feel towards its characters or writing I can't deny the obvious and admirable amount of love that went into this; In my opinion it and Helluva Boss for sure marked a new era in indie animation

It is funny that despite her passive nature, she is 2nd only to her mother and father in actual strength. Those goat demons that help her are supposed to be guards, and are supposed to react to threats, but Katey isn't even considered a threat in her's or Charlie's eyes. As she was singing she was warping reality for it lmao.

There are so many super popular one liners in this and I had no idea from where it came, now I know and it's absolutely glorious!
To answer you question about Vaggie (The grey chick with the harpoon), we don't really know how she died yet.
There's two theories, though:
1.) She committed suicide after everyone abandoned her when she came out the closet (Both of which send you straight to Hell, in Christian/Catholic eyes).
2.) She was raped and then killed afterwards by the rapist (Which explains the red "X" Eye, as that's where the rapist shot her), then went to Hell because she's gay (Again, Christian/Catholic beliefs)
Good theories for the show!
But that's not actually what Christians/Catholics believe. There aren't any "big" sins that send you striaght to hell.... because any sin at all is bad enough.
Yeah, some sins are worse than others (like murdering someone is worse than flipping them off, and perverting the gift of sex is worse than rolling your eyes at your parents), but that's only because the immediate effect of some sins are more devastating than others. The eternal effect of any sin is that it separates us from a 100% holy God.
God made us for the purpose of loving Him and loving others, and there's a lot of different ways we can do that. But there's also a lot of ways that we twist love or do the opposite... and we have ALL chosen to do that one way or another.
We ALL deserve hell, so... we don't earn eternity with God by avoiding the "big sins." The only reason anyone can go to heaven is because God became a perfect man and took all the punishment for our sin onto Himself. All we have to do is ask for forgiveness and trust in Jesus. When we give our lives to Him, He gives His Life to us!

And Homosexuality is in a lot of spots in the bible and seen as, at best, unacceptable, and at worst a sin.
I do agree about there not being any big/major sins. There's also the fact that our God IS a God of second chances. So long as you either repent, or don't act out on your need for bodily pleasure (Ergo, Lust), you should be golden.

A little info, Alistor was supposedly a serial killer and radio broadcaster in life that was shot by a hunter who thought he was a deer when disposing a victim. That's why his hair looks like a deer's ears and the radio static...also he died in 1933 so that's why he talks that way. Oh, and Charlie and Lucifer's last name is a play off Lucifer's meaning, that being "The Bright One" or "The Morning Star"

I think cleaning has little to do with gender roles or patriarchy, it’s common and hygienic sense to keep a place clean. Every parent tells their kid to clean their room and help tidy the house regardless if you’re a male or female. I know I wouldn’t wanna live with a slob.
I've seen several reactions to the Hazbin Hotel pilot(as well as watching the pilot myself), and I think you're the first person to suggest that they might be a deviled eggs joke. I can't believe it took my this long to think that.
That aside, I'm glad that you enjoyed this. I'm looking forward to seeing the show come out.
One thing I love about Alastor is his twisted moral code. He is a cannibal, possibly even a voodoo practitioner, and sees nothing wrong with butchering those that annoy him. At the same time, he seems to have a soft spot for women, especially those that are not among the more powerful demons.
Dunno how he feels about children, though it might depend on how they act...

I love Angel Dust, he and Charlie are my favorite characters. I so cant wait for the actual episodes in January! Crazy thing is that as powerful as Alastor (the Radio Demon) is it's been confirmed that Charlie is even more powerful than him. She's just too good and nice to use her powers aggressively. Thats why she can also manipulate her surroundings. Her musical number really came across that way. (You can see the cloud scene on Loona's computer in ep 1 of Helluva Boss)
As the power lineup goes Charlie is in 3rd place. Right behind Lucifer (who is the fallen angel and a different entity than Satan) and Lilith. Following Charlie there are the 7 Deadly Sins, who you can learn about through Helluva Boss, and which Lucifer is the leader of.
Then there are the Princes/Royalty of Hell, the Goetia. To whom Stolas belongs. It seems they run the more day to day aspects of the Rings.
Then, below them are the Overlords. Alastor and Valentino are a part of this set. Normal Sinners but those who have gained enough power or influence to set themselves apart.
Then the normal Sinners like Angel Dust, Cherri Bomb, and Vaggie are your run of the mill citizens of Hell. They are subject to a yearly purge where Heaven's extermination angels come down to extinguish as many as possible.
The lowest class/power level are the Hellhounds, Leviathan, and Imps like Blitz, M&M, and Loona.
Okay, hope that clears a bit of hierarchy and power lore for you. I didn't wanna bore you with too much detail. Lol

I used to work at a gas station near our local news station. I’d see the hosts from the news from time to time and the only way I could properly describe them was tired. They kept up their happy persona in public but you could see how being anchors where wearing them down
I would like to prefice that this is just a character analysis of Vaggie, not meant to start any heated arguments.
So, there's a few things about Vaggie (the white haired woman with an x over her eye) that hint to her previous life. Now, unless things have been confirmed and I was under a rock at the time, not too much is known for sure about her. But from what we witness in the pilot, we can make a few assumptions.
Vaggie seems to be pretty prone to violence, and given her inclination toward it, and the threats of merder, and the fact she's in hell, it's likely she commited murder and possibly other similar violent crimes.
She also hates men. It doesn't quite seem like it in the pilot, but given how she acts towards many of the male demons and sinners she's encountered so far, including the one who just called Charlie a stupid bitch, I'm inclined to believe it. Not to mention, when Husker and the Bar arrived, she likened it to turning the entire hotel into some "Brothel Mancave." Men aren't the only people who can become alcoholics, or go to places for sexual entertainment, and sin because of them. So, it seems pretty gender-charged to me, at least.
Some of these could just be argued against, and I can see why that could not be the case, but while I do like the character of Vaggie, it's also important to know that this version of hell doesn't take you just for having a single one night stand with the similar sex. You need to sin, and murder and unneccesary hate toward the opposite gender sounds like some sinful things to me.
