That EP-5 is, I'm pretty sure, the best standalone tape echo pedal I've ever heard in my life. You guys/girls/all other sorts of people/et al. have an absolute diamond here.
Miku into the effects loop of other effects, can make some really cool sounds, especially for ambient folks. I have the SolidGoodFX Electroman 2, which has an fx loop, and put a Miku and tremolo in it, which resulted in some really cool stuff.
Here’s the thing with that Slicer: it’s so rare to see you guys encounter an effect that’s totally alien (vs a “take” on something with which you’re already familiar) - I say do a whole hour deep dive into the Slicer! I would totally watch to the end 😮
Been waiting (and hoping) for this one! I've had the Kernom Ridge for a few months now, and couldn't wait to see what you guys could do with one! Looking forward to the more in depth dive in the future! Hopefully, along the lines of what you did for the Chase Bliss preamp (matching a couple of pedals, TS, BB, Klon etc). One of the things I figured out along the way (and I know Dan has already thought about it) is don't be afraid to go radical on the pre tone and then balance it to where you want on the post. That can radically change the OD and distortion character and how it behaves and truly makes the possibilities seem limitless! My Chase Bliss preamp is going up for sale as soon as I get around to listing it! Well done as always!
How does the Chase Bliss Automatone compare to the Kernom Ridge? It looks like you prefer the Kernom Ridge. Why? How do they overlap and what does each do that the other cannot? Thanks in advance!
@@SamsonBrock42 First, comparison..... there is definitely overlap, but the Ridge has a broader range. The Chase Bliss can get a little fuxxy where the Ridge can't, but other than that, the range and variability of the Ridge is superior. The Chase Bliss has the advantage of the faders being more visible, particularly on the presets so you can see easier (you can on the Ridge, but it's a lot more work for now) what the preset settings are/were. The Ridge having pre and post gain both active is an advantage because you can tweak the pre to drive the gain in a certain way that might not produce the sound your after but makes the drive behave very differently, and then with the post eq get it back to where you want. So more flexible eq goes to the Ridge though that also makes it in a way more complex, but still better. The Chase Bliss is very nice, don't get me wrong, BUT, with the Ridge's advantages and the Chase Bliss being more than 2x the price...... I can't justify both (maybe I could, but it seems kinda crazy), and with midi I can access the differant presets easily and by name with a controller. For me, the Ridge is a better fit and will replace multiple pedals that might have been on my board....... leaving room for more fuzz!!!! 🤣
Great episode. That Kernom Ridge sounds like it has the ability to knock a few pedals off a board in one go. The fact that it’s MIDI programmable too… Could dial in overdrive/distortion sound(s) per song. Impressive.
Got the ridge a few weeks back its an all rounder for sure, still have not settled on a sound yet but the options are there and its a really interesting design
Agreed mate the midi option really is a huge thing in the design as it really opens it up but like you i have neither the time or patience to go down that route but its a really cool bit of kit
Amazing show as always gents. Just got the Kernom myself but not had chance to play it yet, very excited. The Darkness was a treat. Great playing guys 😊
"Just before we move on.. let me try this.." it's hard to stop playing with it. I got one during their Kickstarter campaign. And it was worth every single penny I paid for it. Unique Rich sounding Drive tones. You guys just discovered the clean Boost section. Stack it with some other pedals and use it like a klon. It will blow you away.
We really are in a Golden Age of Guitar Pedals. From digital reproductions of Vintage gear, studio quality rack gear in a box, FUZZ and crazy original ideas all with MIDI control…amazing. Kernom has crazy potential for switcher people? Great line up today. All winners!
I agree!!! there is so many HITS!! going on!! I recently got hold of the Boss SL-2!! a lot of fun and gets you thinking! and teaches you to play in different ways :)
To hear Dan quoting Steve Vai's Attitude Song Is a real time trip! That Kernom Ridge pedal is really interesting and sounds great! I'll bet the continuously variable distortion icontrol s using a rotary encoder. You guys are amazing and I love TPS!
It's not actually continuously variable. What I and a few others have figured out is that within each zone, it is continuously variable, but there is a switchover you can find and hear clearly at the edge of the zones (the separating lines). It's fairly subtle on most of then (you hear it if you hit a note and then sweep past that edge), but on one of them (I think 2 to 3), it's a bit more abrupt. Still an amazing pedal! I LOVE mine!
Hahahaha! It’s a fair observation. As Metal as a tree, as I always say. I was editor of Metal Hammer magazine once. True story. The worst few months of my life!
Much love guys, impulsively bought a new guitar the other day and it's getting me all fizzy about experimenting with sounds again, keep up the NPD's one of my favorite types of show!
I went to see SUNN about 12 years ago and I remember turning to my friend after about 10 minutes and saying they’re not that loud. Within the next minute, they both press down what I assume to be volume pedals and the rest of the night my eyelashes were vibrating. So intense.
Hey guys, just writing to say its awesome to have this style of show back! Dont know how you find the time to make this much content! Its fantastic as always. Take care :)
I've had Riley from Gecko Pedals on the podcast and he's just a wonderful dude! I'm working on some videos with the Geckoplex that I'm hoping to release in the next month or so - it's a beautifully wonderful pedal!
The Dreadbox Darkness is a monumental ambient reverb pedal..As well as its 2 octave shimmer range,it also has triangle and sample and hold modulation with speed and depth controls..Plus it has a gate function..The soundscapes you can get from it are truly brilliant..
I’d love to see you both set up a looper board, with an array of more unusual pedals such as the slicer/ blooper & crazy reverbs just being used to make a loop which you can then solo over ... that’s mostly how I use my wired stuff & it can be loads of fun👍🎸😀
If you want to fully “get” Sunn O))) I’d recommend listening to the album ‘Metta, Benevolence’ that was recorded for BBC 6 music. Set yourself the goal of getting halfway through ‘Troubled Air’ and the Trombone solo will make it worth your while!
Came here for the Slicer, but now I'm seriously interested in the Kernom! I have a Hamstead Subspace and I love it, but just the ability to have a preset (I don't do midi) is very interesting.

I believe the Kernom has a cheat sheet so you can set it to approximate various classic overdrives? I’m pretty sure Paul Davids demonstrated that in his video for it… something like that anyway…
Seafoam pedals’ Lowtide also has variable clipping (symmetrical/asymmetrical) controlled via a dial as opposed to the standard 2 or 3 position toggle. Also happens to me one of my all time favourites!
Thanks guys, loved the overdrive, delay and some of the reverb sounds. The slicer though, I want a TPS edition version. Dan! - After years of TPS discipleship, it sounds to me like the clipping modes on the Kernom Ridge might be op amp only >> op amp w/diodes in loop >> op amp w/diodes after >> discrete transistor >> cascaded transistors. Do you happen to have the specs on that? This could be my shining moment as an obsessive gear dweeb. (What a great crop this week, too. The KR is ace, and that Geckoplex!)
A relatively narrow "Q" with "freq" position change may simulate less "tilt" than a wider "Q' setting. To be able to control each is great - but to control two of each might triple the price!
The Kernom Ridge sounds really great. Received mine just recently. I‘d like to point out to everybody who likes to recall multiple presets with a MIDI switcher: You cannot adjust recalled presets at all, the knobs do nothing. The only adjustable preset is the favourite one, you recall with the preset button or by sending PC 0 by MIDI. This means adjusting simply the volume of your preset in between songs or at rehearsal is not possible. This is really a pity and I hope they‘ll do a V2 of it, as the pedal is simply awesome!
If you decide to do that Echoplex episode, please include the Pigtronix Echolution 2 deluxe/ultra in its tape mode. It has all the controls that regular echoplex style delay has and then some...for example multiple tape heads, which you might or might not use, configurable tone/filter control, expression etc... You can even load up the default Echoplex preset made by Pigtronix start from there. I am already excited for that episode!
Finally got to the bottom of why three boss pedals were not working was a noise Impedance guitar lead which was fine with other pedals but a no go with boss .was driving me crazy lol your pedal is great into a blues driver 🤣
Gents, may I recommend a tune to demonstrate the glory of the Slicer: Gang of Four's 2011 release Content, the first track "She Said." Don't know if Andy Gill is playing the original SL-20 or some software approximation, but it sounds like a sequenced flamethrower. Definitely not a joke. Enjoy!
Thanks for this! Was wondering if there were any compelling examples of applying the Slicer. And now digging through GO4's back catalog too, good stuff!
Hey D&M ...if you do an analogue delay show you must try and get hold of an Ashville Music Technology AGT-1 (speak to Andertons, who have suddenly started stocking them!) - it's by the fella who was behind MoogFooger pedals (Hawker) - it's AMAZING !!! I know Mick had a soft spot for the MF delay - well this is next level!

Can't wait to put the Slicer in the effects loop of my DOD Rubberneck.
Honestly glad this format is back (formerly Pick N Mix), this is such a natural and organic way to listen and get a feel for new gear.
I don't think I'd be the only one interested in seeing you two assemble a board of your favorite drive pedals, and try to match them with the Kernom!
Please make an entire episode on the Kernom
Back at home after a bout of surgery, a little sore and spaced out, but an episode of TPS is always good to lift my mood.
What I love about Playing Guitar and using effects is it fits and expresses the mood im in , I feel creatively full up afterwards .

Great episode; love seeing this type of format where you both explore the tones and limits of pedals that are new to you and many of us.
There's not enough lifetime to experiment & try all these new pedals. It's fantastic! Great show guys 👌👍
