How To Use Echo & Delay Sounds On Guitar [In Your Band]

  • Don’t know where to start with delay? Try doubling, slapback, dotted 8th and more - with and without the band!
    Life too short for long RUclips videos? See the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
    Welcome to the show! Here are some delay sounds to try even if you’re not in a band… but definitely if you are! Lots of people have been asking us what happens when you’re joined by bass and drums: what happens to those lovely delay textures in a band mix?
    We’ll look at six approaches ranging for very short, to very long delays. We demonstrate doubling, slapback, multi-head, modulated, dotted 8th and looooong repeats to really help you dial those tones and spur ideas of your own.
    Massive thanks to Dougie Mussard for being such a wonderful human and playing the tubs for us.
    How did we record the band?
    The drums are mic’d in the Glyn Johns method (Neumann TLM102 as the overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyerdynamic M201) underneath. The bass is DI’d via an Amped SVT DI (full bass rig below), the guitar cabs are mic’d as usual (with Austrian Audio OC18), plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). There’s plenty of spill all around the mics in the room and we kinda love it.
    Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using Universal Audio Luna.
    Enjoy the video!

    And incidentally, that Gold Top into the ODR-1 and BD2 combo (into these 2 amps), with or without delay…Pure. Unadulterated. Magic.

    These episodes are instant favorites. Immensely enlightening and tons of fun. Can't wait to take a few of these tweaks for a spin! Also: big ups to The Freshness, as Dougie's American fans know him. We tried calling him "D-Dawg" but it was maybe a bit too yoga-centric, and "Adho Mukha Shvanasana" seemed a mouthful.

    I love, love, love, _LOVE_ the new _In Your Band_ series, guys. Now you can go back in time and select all the gold in the same context. I'm holding out for the "How to use ring modulation and octave fuzz in love ballads" episode. That'll be gold. BTW, Mick, I noticed you lads hit 108 dB on the meter with the Casino and not even a hint of howl. That suggests a band at reasonable volumes can easily get away with a hollow body in the mix. Nice to see I have another excuse to buy a guitar. "But, honey! I need ALL the TONEZ!" 🤣☺️

    This episode is making my trek from Acoutic guitar to eletric less stressful. I play mostly in church and the last jam is very close the style we play in. I'm using an analog delay... because right now I have to go direct into the pa. But we are playing around with smaller t amps on the side to see if we can make it work...even the keyboard player. Our pastor seems to dig it. He reminds us often that our church has a lot of former 'Dead Heads' in it and to not be afriad of getting a little loud. Thanks so much guys... I will be shareing this one with the team.

    • @Casinofire1
      @Casinofire1 2 года назад

      Use a simplifier instead of an amp. Build a good board to go with it. Keep stage volume to a minimum. It really helps. Let the sound guy take of the rest as long as he/she is good at what they do! Take it from a "dead head" who plays in church and loves loud. I routinely run our service at or around 100db and it sounds amazing

    I have a BOSS DD-200 and it really is amazing, so versatile in that the settings I mainly use are not even mentioned in your vid. The SHIMMER, PAD and TERO echo settings create an abundance of ambient accents and reverberating resonances. And plugging in a footswitch can let you hold the sound (the last chord played) or even do that WARP or TWIST effect which can add a great touch now and then.

    That DD-200 is the best all ‘rounder, still, for my money.

    A most illuminating episode. Especially liked ‘Really Long Delay With Band’, and noticed that by accident or design the tempo fairly quickly settled on 60bpm, same as the delay time.
