  • Stand Up paddle Downwind video filmed and narrated by Jeff Chang (Wet Feet) and Robert Stehlik (Blue Planet). In this video, we are all on 14' Bump Rider models. Jeff Chang is on a 30" wide version, Tyler Jaggers on a 28" wide one and Robert Stehlik on a 27" wide board. The footage was shot on a downwind run from Sandy Beach to Waikiki and the advantages of Jeff's wider board are apparent in this video. When in doubt, use a wider board in rough conditions and you will most likely be faster than on a narrow board. Aloha!

I paddle in 1 foot chop a lot but wow extreme conditions at the end of that video, my head was swimming just watching lol. Definitely feeling a little bit Green at the end. I'm still up for it though, eyes on the horizon paddle on!!

Yes, rough water makes it challenging but that’s how your balance improves! 🤙🏼

Right now the wind and waves are like this in Kalundborg Fjord - totally funny doing a downwinder on my new Aztron Martian!

Greta vid guys and wow those are some washing machine conditions! Would love to try a bump rider or SIC Bullet V2 sometime. When in confused chop and on longer paddles a few inches makes a huge difference in stability and really helps reduce fatigue. Jeff makes a great point about behavior, you really do want a neutral board that is easy to work and predict. I paddle a 2019 Allstar and what I notice most as their designs change year to year is how much more neutral they are and how you can catch glides almost without ever moving fwd or back - almost like a dugout. Or stick the nose into the wave in front and it just doesnt get pulled around like older designs did.

We stopped our weekly SUP race training days during the pandemic and have discontinued them due to lack of interest. If you are interested in a one on one downwind training session, that is something we can set up, please contact us at blueplanetsurf@gmail.com

John Amundosn is a good guy and a great shaper, you can't go wrong with one of his boards!

Usually at downwind it's waste of energy to paddle the whole time.I see no much downwind at video..this is because at specific point sea is tricky(different directions)?A 18" board works better at these conditions?
