In my personal opinion, this is more difficult and more high artistic value than hyper realistic style. This is true art for sure!

He erases, but the lines and shadows are supperved. He uses a continuation of lines to adquire the correct effect, it's amazing how he does it! Considering no colors, just the black and white of the paper finally. Good job!!

I used to be able to draw like this. With no markers or measuring. That was a long time ago when I was at school and I drew every day. After taking 8/9 years out of drawing entirely, I found I really couldn't pull it off anymore. It's been 3 years since I started to draw again and it's still not there yet.
This guy has amazing skill. Awesome to watch. Thanks for posting.

I don't know your age,but as the years pass by I find my eyesight is becoming a handicap.Years of drawing in strong sunlight and painting in electric light and eye-balling computer screens have taken their toll.I wear specs, but my eyes still tire quite quickly.I think if you stopped drawing for nearly a decade it is normal you are a bit rusty. With practice you will get those skills back.Talent jusn't just vanish. If you've got it its there for life...but with time your eyes will tire.

simplicity, elegance, style and talent combined in a single fella, incredible; love your videos, and yes, indeed a privilege to see a normal speed drawing process of such and artist; and yes, the ereaser is as necessary in a drawing as a pencil (of any kind, but rather unussual to see a full portrair executed so masterfully with a single polychromos pencil)

This is great, thanks Davy for posting this and thanks Gabor. I love this style. Didn't he use to use Conté 1710 in the past? I will had that kind of pencil to my arsenal. It is so funny how blunt the tip of the pencil is but it gives a very definite look to the stunning drawing. Thanks again both of you

@@sfpro6978 The technique used here has been used by great draftsmen through the ages, and is almost as old as art itself."Cross-hatching" is how it is usually described.Often used in pen and ink work.Lines are not smoothed over but built up in "crossed" layers to create shadow. Here the artist does use an eraser but the technique is the same.A totally opposite method of creating values would be called "estompage", where all gradations are blended using an compressed paper blender.

@@sfpro6978 Draw from life.I don't think its a question of your eyesight. Its learning to putting down what you see on paper. Some artists "squint" in order to see the main shapes and values.Degas was almost blind at the end of his life and still produced superb paintings. It takes practice and passion and hard work.Stick at it.

Hello Davy, I want to see how you draw, please upload some of your work, I love drawing, I used to draw when I was a little kid and now I am back at it, I know it is practice and patience but it also requires a touch of a talent, I think every portrait has a spirit of the one you draw and a little bit of yourself too, I mainly use faber castell and sometimes Staedtlers graphite pencils, I recently bought caran d'ache graphite but I didn't use it yet!
I have a lot of pdfs on drawing, I watched a lot of videos too, I studied a lot of methods and I feel lost! I very much would like you to guide me on few good books on drawing or anything that you think it is good enough for me, something that centers me and stops me from getting lost!
I also want to know about a good paper, I bought canson, strathmore 300, but I don't like the paper tooth! I would like to try a good grey paper or any paper you recommend, I forgot to mention that I want something that will make me do a realistic portrait with good details in a fastest way possible! If you know what I mean...
    Thank you.

Jimer4444 is a good friend who filmed and uploaded videos of my work.I think everybody starts with graphite. The brand does not really matter.Learning to use both hard and soft graphite does.Paper is a very personal choice.I like canson. There are no short-cuts to the "realistic portrait" you are dreaming of.Recommended reading:"Drawing on the right side of the brain"by Betty Edwards."The Story of Art", by Gombrich

Anyone who has mastered the art of portraiture is an artist.Portraiture is a speciality;a difficult speciality. All artists who can render a convincing portrait will also be equiped to 'see' a still life,a landscape and draw any subject from life without problems.Whether they excel in these areas or in abstract work is another matter.
