- A Brief History of Computer Animation: 1942-1963
Over the next few months we are going to be producing a series of videos on the history of computer animation. To begin, we’re going to be looking at the medium’s infancy between the years 1942 and 1963. We will see the work of James and John Whitney, Russell Kirsch’s first digital image, and the early innovations of Ivan Sutherland and Bell Labs. Also included is a quick history of animation, from the Palaeolithic period to the German abstract movement of the 1920s.

I had no idea that computer animation went back so far. My mind is blown!
These animations look very modern, I wouldn't have thought they were from the 1920's-40's!
Your videos that I've seen so far, this and "remember the calming aesthetic of the 1990s" are some premium quality stuff! Keep up the good work.
This video alone has opened my eyes up to a while history of animation and vintage aesthetics I never knew existed. Thank you!
Thank you for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
this and part 2 are more or less like an abridged version of my 'history of media art' class my freshman year of college (minus all the performance/video-art stuff, but still). super awesome
R. I. P Descanse en paz Señor Rusell. Lo siento mucho. Gracias por su aportación a la ciència.
alfin alguien mas que habla español yo solo vine para saber como se origino la animación 3d
Wish there were more videos like this. Only 16,852 views? Highly underrated.
The Whitney Brothers started work on Five Film Excercises 1 in 1939.
This is great, thanks for making such a quality program, loved the vertigo credits work, awesome to see where it lies on the timeline.
listen, this is crazy good, I can't believe you don't have more subscribers.
I’m just starting this series, but it’s fantastic so far!
Amazing video, I learned a lot. Thanks a lot for your effort.
Oh, and I was lucky enough to know John Whitney (he was a teacher at UCLA at the time when I had my small video studio in LA - he was an influence)
This is one of my biggest interests. Thank you so much
I just learned more in 7 minutes than I did in 2 years of design college.
Well done, very informative.
amazing information. thank you very much
1942 Wow some people where very forward thinking.
Helped alot with my assignment
Underrated af 😕
0:31 what is the name of that animation? Seen it as a music video before but i never got a source. Looks amazing! Also great and informative video!
Yes, I have no idea but I want to know!
Finn Devlin it seems to be wayang shadow puppetry but i didnt find the right one yet
RIP RUSSELL KIRSCH.
Great job, I'll be saving/adding this to my channel. This part 1 of 4, of the introduction to CG history (noted for first time viewers). *Addendum, there are many reference links in the bibliography, see the full description of the video.
Hi!
I really enjoy the vídeo.
Im doing a school work.
Can you tell me what are your references?
Did you include Michael Noll Computer Ballet?
Hi! Sorry, just a quick doubt- What's the difference between the first computer-generated animation and the first digital animation? Isn't John Whitney's work considered digital?
(also lovely, LOVELY series)
This video explains how his animations were made. Thanks for watching! ruclips.net/video/5eMSPtm6u5Y/видео.html
Is Ivan Sutherland related to the Sutherland from Evans and... here in Utah, in Salt Lake City?

Animations yes but not all created with computers
Those animations done in 1942 had nothing to do with computers. What ever digital devices had existed then were not capable of visual graphics. However, these 1942 films must have been hand-made with the utilization of mathematics and geometry.
Those animations were done by *analog* computers, not digital ones.Analog computers had already existed for a century by then.
Good thing you can slow down the video. This guy talks way too fast.
And today, with people already living in their smartphones still believe, this world ist real..,
Or laughing about the Simulation Theory. :D
