I did a double take, put on my glasses, and then reread the title. I'm glad to see that it's Hunan beef and not Human beef. I remember watching Yan Can Cook all the time back in the 80s.
I watched Martin when I was younger. I'm 73 and so glad I found "Yan Can Cook" here on RUclips. Most of the newer cooking shows have the chefs as the focus but all these older shows are about the cooking. It's nice to have a host with personality showing how you do the recipes, ingredients and instructions included. (I call it the "Julia" style. I think I learned to cook watching Yan and the other public television cooking shows. I also like the small audiences and their reactions. Great Stuff !
If Yan can cook, so can YOU!... I love this guy... I remember growing up watching him cook on PBS after school... My brothers and I learned to cook because of him... We are now executive chefs and personal chefs because of our love of cooking... Thanks Martin Yan!!
I'm native arabic speaker grow up in 🇱🇾 when I was 8 years old use to watch this show without understanding it and promes my self to learn English so I can understand , now I speak Spanish beside English thanks to this show
I watched Mr. Yan when I was a little kid. He was entertaining and informative. I watched him, and Julia Child. Mostly because we were pretty poor and seeing all of that food made me happy lol. Thanks for the nostalgia guys.
These episodes were filmed in a small shopping center near the house I grew up in. I would sneak around the back of the building and listen with my ear to the door. To small and shy to ever try to meet Mr. Yan, but I always loved these shows. This was decades before the Food Network, and years before any of the celebrity chefs of recent times. Thank you for putting these shows out. And thank you Martin Yan for teaching us all to make delicious meals, and to always have fun while cooking.
Watching Yan cook on PBS back in the 80s with my Sister is a definite blast from the past. It's cool to find his cooking show on RUclips about 40 years later. Wow.
I'm so glad to have grown up with all the cooking giants as an older millennial. Martin Yan, Justin Wilson, Jeff Smith, Paul Prudhomme, and last but not least, Julia Child, and Jacques Pepin.
One of the conditions to play video games as a kid was to write recipes from PBS cooks. Yang was the toughest cause he was a showman. Laughed so hard, but a great teacher! This was a video that took me back like 30 years. So thank you!
I worked at a great Chinese restaurant in Pittsburgh in the late 70's. We had a dish called beef, pepper and tomato. Had a little onion and garlic and ginger in it and a tablespoon of finely chopped salted black beans. Over 40 years later I still make it. I can't find the salted black beans anymore so I buy a jar of black bean & garlic sauce to use. Great memories working there! Anyone else remember the Peacock Restaurant? It was in Mt. Lebanon.
You can still get salted black beans at some Asian stores. I see it here where I live in Florida. I would be willing t9 bet you can get it online or learn how to make it
I wish we had more celebrity chefs these days like Yan!!! Before I even had any interest in becoming a chef, I had fond memories of watching Yan can Cook!!!
When I was in elementary school. Like 1st or 2nd grade, I would watch this guy's show in the morning before I had to catch the bus. No idea why but I loved the show.
There are not enough loves for this dude. I watched these shows when they originally aired and I love watching them here. His personality is unrivaled as well as his cooking skills! He's the Jackie Chan of cooking!
I watched these shows when they were new. Loved them then, love them now! At one point, PBS was marketing Martin Yan cleavers and yes, I have one! Thank you, KQED, for bringing Martain back!
Hi When I first moved to S California back in 1981, Martins show was on every day and I fell in love with his style in everything that he did and it’s great to see him again in here.
Growing up kids were watching barney and power rangers but I was always watching PBS cooking shows! My family always thought I was weird but I found something so fun and entertaining about watching people cook! I was lucky to find something to be passionate about at such a young age!
Omg...I am so happy to see him! I remember making a salmon in parchment paper with black bean paste and soy sauce and scallions...It was the best dish I ever ate and lost the recipe! I would love to find it again as my entire family loved it! I have searched for it but never found it!
I don’t have his salmon in bean paste recipe anymore either, but I know where you can find it: it was published in the series’ 1998 companion cookbook titled “Martin Yan’s Feast-The Best of Yan Can Cook.” (not to be confused with his similarly named cookbook “Yan Can Cook”). My local library has a copy; if yours doesn’t, copies available on eBay or Amazon.
How have I never heard of this guy!? I would have loved watching him along side Good Eats growing up. I guess better late than never. This guy is great.
"Martin Yan"Cantonese my favorite we're learning to cook Cantonese.. HI CHING this was during time of asian craze especially CANTONESE which is historical and cultural cooking
Are these the old shows?...seems like martin never gets old :)
This episode originally aired in the early '90s (but you're right - Martin never gets old!).
Martin just turn 72 last year and I did wish him a Happy Birthday.
Black don't crack
Especially when we are talking of a show from the 60s
Then next we can watch Justin Wilson measure a teaspoon of salt exactly in his hand, I guarantee.
I did a double take, put on my glasses, and then reread the title. I'm glad to see that it's Hunan beef and not Human beef. I remember watching Yan Can Cook all the time back in the 80s.
Lmaoo i had to look twice as well like am i tripping
Same!!
Same here. I was a little girl.
Same here.
I'm probably the only one disappointed after reading it more carefully.
I watched Martin when I was younger. I'm 73 and so glad I found "Yan Can Cook" here on RUclips.

I miss cooks like this I grew up watching him these were the good old days
Check out the 80's hair styles 13:09 :D
Me as well......food channels are bad
Yan & Emeril were my favorites...
That’s exactly the reason why I’m watching this, too!😂
He always makes me 😃
If Yan can cook, so can YOU!... I love this guy... I remember growing up watching him cook on PBS after school... My brothers and I learned to cook because of him... We are now executive chefs and personal chefs because of our love of cooking... Thanks Martin Yan!!
Same thing here. I watched Julia Childs as a kid and also Yan!
Wow!
Martin, Julia and Jacques back in the 80s got me interested in cooking.
He taught me too just a home cook.
That's wonderful!
Human Beef with Broccoli | Yan Can Cook | KQED is a wonderful title especially with the coming apocalypse. Thanks Yan for the inspiration!!!
Ahahah I read Human too
Haha! Aw man, I missed it. Looks like KQED fixed the name.
I'm native arabic speaker grow up in 🇱🇾 when I was 8 years old use to watch this show without understanding it and promes my self to learn English so I can understand , now I speak Spanish beside English thanks to this show
Martin Yan is the man! When I first started watching cooking shows as a teenager, he was a staple......
his sense of humor makes the show even better.
He also speaks English well and is very intelligent.
@@Carbabydoll I like his accent. It's awesome!
This guy was ahead of his time. This was the only cooking show dedicated to asian cuisine. And he was so funny
I watched Mr. Yan when I was a little kid. He was entertaining and informative. I watched him, and Julia Child. Mostly because we were pretty poor and seeing all of that food made me happy lol. Thanks for the nostalgia guys.
he can cook ruclips.net/video/-HUeduqoXGU/видео.html
I love Martin Yan, used to watch him a lot when I was a teen during the 90's.
Martin Yan again...What a welcome pleasure!0
BLAST FROM THE PAST. He was a head of his time. I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching him. THANK YOU

"What're you going to do? I really don't care." I'm so glad I found this guy! ❤
Omg .. just came across this.. its so nostalgic.. use to watch this as a kid... crazy.. if yan can cook.. so can you. Lmao
Watching Yan cook on PBS back in the 80s with my Sister is a definite blast from the past. It's cool to find his cooking show on RUclips about 40 years later. Wow.
Memories of staying home sick from school watching pbs and njn and seeing this man cook it up
The best part of being home sick was watching the cooking shows! Lolololol
He is one of my favorite chefs! I use to watch him cook as a young lad. Nostalgic to see him now
Same!!! Wonder if he’s still around cooking?
Google it. I’m sure Google will know!
In 2022 four dishes would be 4 shows. Love these old cooking shows!!! The best!!🥇🎎🧧
I'm so glad to have grown up with all the cooking giants as an older millennial. Martin Yan, Justin Wilson, Jeff Smith, Paul Prudhomme, and last but not least, Julia Child, and Jacques Pepin.
"Look how easy" he says while perfectly peeling a ripe tomato in 5 seconds with a giant cleaver.
One of the conditions to play video games as a kid was to write recipes from PBS cooks. Yang was the toughest cause he was a showman. Laughed so hard, but a great teacher! This was a video that took me back like 30 years. So thank you!
This is why the 80s and 90s were awesome. Tv had charm, quality, authenticity and substance 😂

no but i want to try that dish! Salted black beans??
You can still get salted black beans at some Asian stores. I see it here where I live in Florida. I would be willing t9 bet you can get it online or learn how to make it
Oh wow. This is my childhood right here. I used to watch Martin with my dad when I was little. Thank you Martin Yan!
Thank you KQED for more episodes of Yan Can Cook every Monday and I absolutely love making some recipes at home.
I absolutely loved watching Yan Can Cook as a kid. When the youtube algorithm popped an episode up, I just had to watch it for old times sake.
80's style chinese food. Classic takeaway tastes!
I wish we had more celebrity chefs these days like Yan!!! Before I even had any interest in becoming a chef, I had fond memories of watching Yan can Cook!!!
I love it when he cuts and smiles at the camera.
My eyes aren't good as it was, I thought "Human Beef", anyhow one of my favorite cooking show when I was a kid watching on PBS.
I loved Yan Can Cook. Used to watch it all the time.
When I was in elementary school. Like 1st or 2nd grade, I would watch this guy's show in the morning before I had to catch the bus. No idea why but I loved the show.
Live studio audience is the way to do a cooking show. It's a lost art
Always love to watch Martin Yan. Don't Wok Away
All I remember is him making the frog legs dance🤣loved this show
All i know is this show is marvelous
Loved this show! He was so much fun to watch!
I remember before the cooking channel, food network, and iron chefs, there was this guy. OG cooking show for sure. Brings back so many memories.
Watched this guy as a child!…. Taught me how use a knife/cleaver in a kitchen!…. Now I’m 50 years old!…. Haha…. What a mentor of mine!…. 💯
The Best Chef Ever.
My childhood is back baby!!!
Thank you for posting this show. I loved it as a kid and he is still very entertaining and endearing. A national treasure to be sure.
Before Jacky Chan was famous in America there was this guy.
I miss watching this guy's show. Yan was awesome
Was a child when this was on. Had no idea about cooking but loved how engaging he is. If Yan can cook so can you!!
I tell my wife, "If Yan can cook, so can you!"
She just laughs and tells me to order takeout.

Nice try!
I love Chinese food and he has great knife skills, so I need to watch this and learn. He is funny too which makes it entertaining!
I literally taught myself to chop without looking because of Yan. He is a hero!
Martin Yan was the best. I looked forward to watching his show on TV back in the day.
Man l miss this guy , l used to love watching him ,after school at my Grandma's, after my homework was done , after him was Jacques Pepin.
Me and my grandma used to watch him and Julia and Wolfgang and Emeril together ALL THE TIME. I miss those days so much.
I still use Yan's technique for chopping garlic. He was/is inspiring.
How did he do it so quickly, is he just smashing it with the cleaver?
There are not enough loves for this dude. I watched these shows when they originally aired and I love watching them here. His personality is unrivaled as well as his cooking skills! He's the Jackie Chan of cooking!
I used to watch Yen 30yrs ago on the weekends like cartoons. He's still relevant
Whoever uploaded this, thank you. This brought back my childhood of watching this with my dad. My dad made alot of these receipes.
This video is actually official, its uploaded by the same TV channel that originally ran the show.
Glad KQED brought this here.

Hi When I first moved to S California back in 1981, Martins show was on every day and I fell in love with his style in everything that he did and it’s great to see him again in here.
This man is responsible for me learning how to cook
Used to watch as a kid, he’s a funny chef and a entertainer. I learned his cooking tips and he’s my inspiration to cook. Every dish is “marvelous!”
I agree. Very marvelous, specifically.
So many good memories watching him back in the day!
Martin Yan outstanding! Ming Sai also. Keep smiling. God Bless you all
Absolutely love Martin Yan Can Cook is amazing!!💙
Thanks Emily!
@@kqed You’re welcome!
Glad you're back posting more Yan!
Love this guy's sense of humor! Great cooking too!
I honestly think he's better than Gordon Ramsey. He's FAST and polite.
Growing up kids were watching barney and power rangers but I was always watching PBS cooking shows! My family always thought I was weird but I found something so fun and entertaining about watching people cook! I was lucky to find something to be passionate about at such a young age!
Used to love watching this guy. Hilarious and a great cook. Definitely one of the early influences on my love of cooking

Is this the famous yan can cook I’ve heard about?! Hype is real ❤️
Loved watchin him when I was a kid!

I love seeing the evolution of Martin's '80s hair.
I may have misread the title but this is a charming video
I love this man so much.
How have I never heard of this guy!? I would have loved watching him along side Good Eats growing up.
I guess better late than never. This guy is great.
Yeah he was PBS not Food Channel. He had another show years later where he did like travel stuff
It was marvellous.
I watched him all the time back in the day.😀
Simple pleasures in life. Sometimes we get carried away with the new technology and having to come in all the time. Just simply watch!
"Martin Yan"Cantonese my favorite we're learning to cook Cantonese.. HI CHING this was during time of asian craze especially CANTONESE which is historical and cultural cooking
I remember watching this as a little kid at my grandparents house in the '80s. It was on right before the local pro-wrestling show came on!
