Mitch does such a good job with this song. Great song. Great cover.
The best of Michigan Rock & Roll, hands down. Thanks for all the music, Mitch.
Mitch Ryder's cover of Prince's song is his masterpiece from back in the day when music didn't suck! Yes, Rest in peace, Prince! :(
Remembering when this single was released. I was so disappointed that the public paid no attention to it. The man had to take his act overseas to be appreciated. Soul man for sure.
Yes, and I was one of the many people who learnt to appreciate this completely unknown guy and his band doing original american music one night on german tv.
Why didn´t he make it in the US - hard to understand!
I first heard this song years ago in the movie Hot Dog but couldnt find it anywhere and didnt know who was performing it. Was a real pisser. Even when i discovered RUclips years later i still couldnt find it. Finally found it a few years ago and was surprised to find out it was Mitch Rider, and since then ive heard a few others do it, including one of my favorites, Cyndi Lauper. Was also surprised to find out that it was Prince who wrote it. WTG Prince, i guess i didnt give you the credit that you really deserved but then who am i anyways to try and be the Judge. Rest in peace.
Out of all the thousands of videos I've watched on MTV in my life how did I miss this one?
Tim Scott They always played the Cindy Lauper version.
right, because MTV, mainstream radio and media shoved lauper down our throats even tho this is the better version, imo.
idk man they're both good covers honestly. i like cindy's version a little more but it's just personal preference
They did play it a few times when it came out.
Produced by John Mellencamp
RIP Prince 1958-2016
RIP Kitten Nativdad (1948-2022)
Just heard this on the radio in Ann Arbor this morning. Hadn't heard it on the radio since 1983. Sounded great.
Love this song ! Detroit Michigan ❤
Loved this song. First heard it on the 80s comedy Hot Dog the movie
Same Here!! Man, really loved watching that movie! Had a great soundtrack.
On this day in 1983 {July 2nd} Mitch Ryder performed "When You Were Mine" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
On July 10th, 1983 the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #95, two weeks later it would peak at #87 {for 1 week}, and it spent four weeks on the Top 100...
"When You Were Mine" was composed by Prince, and his original version appeared on his 1980 album 'Dirty Mind'...
Between 1965 and 1983 Mitch Ryder had twelve records on the Hot Top 100 chart, and as noted above three made the Top 10, "Jenny Take A Ride" {#10 in 1965}, "Devil With A Blue Dress On" {#4 in 1966}, and"Sock It To Me - Baby" {#6 in 1967}...
Eight of his twelve charted records were with the Detroit Wheels...
Mitch Ryder, born William S. Levise, Jr., celebrated his 74th birthday four month ago on February 26th, 2019...
Sweet lord, Kitten Natividad was fucking smokin! That guy at 0:21 was my exact reaction first time I saw this lol
I really like this version..I mean c'mon, it's Mitch !
I met Mitch Ryder 1994 Chesterfield Michigan he played at Marcos bar/Banquet Hall it was awesome ! when Mitch wasn't there on certain weekends the ban was called Detroit Wheels, when Mitch played it was Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels!! I miss those days
Me, too!!! The 60's music was the best... for me
I met him also 1998 Southgate Michigan for the Downriver cruise and he played a small venue outside and was the most down to earth. Nicest guy used to talk to you after the show rock daylight absolutely cool dude.
This is the best version of this song
There is another version of this live. My echo plays it and it has loner and better sounding lead guitar. You will enjoy it.
Cyndi Lauper also has an amazing cover of this song. She really hits some high notes and it has a lot of synths but in a good way
It is a great version truly, and Mellencamp was right to convince Ryder to do it, but no one comes close to Prince doing this song live.
Between 1977-1982 everybody was doing Prince covers, some with big succes, while Prince was almost an unknown act, the irony. This is one of the best ones.
But within a few years later, Prince surpassed them all to super stardom. So yeah, that is the irony.
The thing that makes this cover a “good” cover is that Mitch truly takes the song and makes it his own.
I was/am a big Prince fan, I was also a big time cable TV watcher. I first heard this song in a movie I saw on HBO “Hot Dog The Movie.”
It was a typical 80s R rated comedy about some white kids skiing. In one sequence they played this song while they did their ski tricks.
I’m watching and not 10 seconds into the song I was freaked out… What was this rock band doing with Prince’s song? As I listened I actually liked it, not as much as the original but it was damn good.
So then I took my butt to the mall to find the Mitch Ryder album. I kinda became a fan.
Who's does the best? T Jones Kiss, M Ryder When you, Bangles Manic Monday, Sineed Nothing compares. Or others I didn't mention.
Prince’s early records sold well. He was touted as a wunderkind. Most of the “ covers” before this were songs written groups like the time and vanity 6. MTV mentioned that Prince wrote this song every time they played it
Cyndi Lauper's version is pretty rad. Definitely makes it her own.
Freaking love it
Takes me way back,
First time I heard it or saw it was on HBO around 11:30 at night ,
I was 23 or 25???,
Oh man, I thought I saw all the MTV videos back in the day, I missed this one some how!
Me, too!!!
In the early sixties, we used to go to the Village in downtown Detroit to see Mitch, who was Billy Lee then. He'd sing r&b songs with the black artists there. Then he formed Billy Lee & the Rivieras, which became Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels.
Sounds like you could write a book!
@@Playbyplaymedia I've written three books, but none on music...yet!
@@arlinecarreyn2027 I'll have to look you up. As to music, you might have had quite a window on history. The club and theatre show scene in Detroit in the 50's and early 60's was reportedly a rich, if "interesting", environment.
Using kitten natividad in this video was a smart move. Every dude who saw this video remembers it LOL
" Z MAN !"
Thanks for the name .I thought she looked familiar ...lol
I remember my Dad loved this song. Hearing this brings back some good memories. I wonder if Prince approved of this version? He probably did.
he was pretty on top of his shit man, i highly doubt a video would've been made if they didn't have his blessing.
this album was produced by Jhon Cougar, close Prince friend.
Peaked at just No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. Great tune.
No 87 is about right. Ok maybe 80.
Love this album, love this song, back in 1983 (?). Produced by John Mellencamp. Has another great cover song, "Big Time" first done by a Memphis-area songwriter whose name I can't recall.
John Mellencamp was a big fan of Mitch and produced this album for him
I Definitely Like this Version ... It's Cool !
i did not know prince was that ol,d.One of the best eer RIP
Love the drums.
this is a great one!
Once upon a time there was a thing called MTV that showed music videos.
This is a really nice cover, I'm a Prince fan & not everyone can do Prince songs.. to my approval lol!
great cover!
Great video and great version of Prince's song.
Hot Dog...The Movie.
Loved it!
That's all I think about.....Skiing !!
nothing like the actual album..digital compression kills this- it is amazing on the LP
..luv you Prince and thanks Mitch you did a great job of this song
exactly my thoughts...
@@amylynpace 2nd that
There’s a cool version floating around RUclips that’s one of those “someone drops the needle” and you just listen and watch the album turn until the song is over.
Mitch looks like the actor Gary Lockwood from 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Great song, loved it back in the day. I totally forgot about it until I stumbled on this video. Thanks for posting it, made me remember how great it was back then and how great I felt then. Getting old really sucks!
WATERDOG300 he looks like jimmy Fallon in some shots lol
You don't have to tell ME that getting old sucks!!! I just turned 70! However... when I hear music such as Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels...it absolutely ZOOMS me back to that time period! Mitch and the Wheels were my ALL-TIME FAVORITE!!!
@@richellesarah1976 I had the same thought!
I promoted this song at radio
Fun Fact - Song was produced by John Mellencamp (as Little Bastard) with his back-up band. Always wanted to hear John M play this song...
you know this was written and originally recorded by prince, right?
J Harkins yes Prince right
Just heard the John Brown version of this one. Different, and fantastic!!!
Memories!
Mitch's best song!
A Prince cover
Great Cover
Still in my top ten songs(princes version)This is 😎though !!!😀
one of the coolest guys in rock and roll
Prince or Mitch?
@@gomudhen M
Mitch too cool for school.
Oh, YEAH!
"Ah Yes, Chinese downhill. What is Chinese Downhill??"
I know Prince must have like this version of his classic track from "Dirty Mind" in 1980! The best of all the remakes.
...Prince was always so ambivalent...i suspect he probably liked it but wouldnt admit it.....i love Mitch...Prince and i came up when Mitch was popping so i think he was probably amused to hear this...this video is so grimy and sexy...love it...and those dancers were killing it...they knew that was their moment to strut their stuff...
RIP Kitten Natividad
Good and Greasy like all good rock and roll.
Love this song and kitten N.
this video reminds me of the hubba hubba club on hotel st. honolulu, one night in my early days, got back to hotel room about 3a.m. if i remember right, ha, ha, ha.
Dude.........I drank 1,000 beers at the Hubba Hubba on Hotel......Then about 5,000 others at Zig Zag, Two Jacks and C 5's. Ahhhh, the old days.
I never seen this on MTV and I watched for hours when I worked at a state run mental asylumn..it was on for at least 24 hrs a day...
they had 4 tvs on the unit and at least one was mtv!
I have never seen it on MTV, either!
A cool song 4/ 17/ 19/ it has a great beat to 👍
Looks like Buck Owens made a cameo appearance. He had a song named Hot Dog in 1957. On March 7, 1966, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and also Buck Owens appeared on the Dick Clark show, Where The Action Is, so they certainly were not strangers. Can anyone confirm that it is Buck @ 0:22 ?
5/2023😊
Thought that this Prince tune would be a hit for Mitch.
When you were mine
I gave you all of my money
Time after time
You done me wrong
It was just like a dream
You let all my friends come over and meet
And you were so strange
You didn't have the decency to change the sheets
Oh girl, when you were mine
I used to let you wear all my clothes
You were so fine (so fine)
Maybe that's the reason that it hurt me so
I know (I know)
That you're going with another guy
I don't care (don't care)
'Cause I love you, baby, that's no lie
I love you more than I did when you were mine
When you were mine
You were kinda, sorta my best friend
So I was blind (so blind)
I let you fool around
I never cared (didn't care)
I never was the kind to make a fuss
When he was there
Sleeping in between the two of us
I know (I know)
That you're going with another guy
I don't care (don't care)
'Cause I love you, baby, that's no lie
I love you more than I did when you were mine
When you were mine
you were all I ever wanted to do
Now I spend my time
Following him whenever he's with you
I know (I know)
That you're going with another guy
I don't care (don't care)
'Cause I love you, baby, that's no lie
I love you more than I did when you were mine
When you were mine, yeah, oh no
Love you, baby, love you, baby
When you were mine
i crashed my car in my 20s to this song. luckily no damage to myself
Oh, my GOODNESS!!! You were sooooooooo very lucky!!! I'm glad that you were not really injured
@@debraweaver6308 thx
Holy crap its jimmy Fallon!
Best epileptic seizure of my life.

Mama.... Ich bring ihn dir mit zum Tanzen 🕺 💃 in deinen Himmel ✨🤩❤️

Kitten!💚💛💚
I think that song was in a ski movie..
are those mtv2 videos from the a-z marathon from 2000 on mtv2? i was gonna buy a bunch of these but i got ripped off in the end.... if you could upload more would be appreciated alot thanks
Mitch was so much more than "CC Rider / Jenny Take A Ride".
Anyone else think he looks like jimmy Fallon
James Lesbirel HERE! 😂
Yes but the other way around! :)
wonder how old windy whoopers is now
So there's TWO Mitch Ryders?
dig the stage dancer! my kinda girl.
That's KITTEN NAVIDAD, nice set on her!
Motor City Man, Never knew that , just watched it again. Sure is & yes, nice set... Heard a cover of this on NPR Sat. night coming back from the west side of the state back to my 313 home. Still love the rockets, just wish Jimmy was still with them, not the same without him
Are you sure McCarty isn't back with the "new" Rockets? They just played down the street at the Token Lounge on 12/30/17, the marquee mentioned Jim McCarty..pissed me off that I couldn't make the show.
Not so pissed if he's not part of the band, though..

"Hot Dog"!
Look for the version floating around RUclips where someone plugs their techniques turntable into some solid modern speakers and then sets the camera on the table and drops the needle... it’s all crackly good spinning. This is probably the best scene in “Hot Dog : the Movie”.
what disappointmen i thounght this was from Casiotone for the painfully alone originally
Mitch's excellent rock cover of Prince's 1980 original is the best. Yet it went unrecognized( despite getting some good radio airplay) compared to Cyndi Lauper's cheesy version on She's So Unusual.
Is the first dancer Christina Hendricks or her sister?
Nevermind. Just looked it up. Christina was 8 when this video was made.
Didn’t Prince produce this album?
another PRINCE's song that i played as a DJ, PRINCE HAD A NICK NAME

should have just featured Kitten the entire video.
Almost a strip show!
He does this better than prince
Kitten Natividad
Kitten
Who is the busty girl dancer?
Morganna?
Oh. Kitten nativadad
Is that a woman? The one that appears from 2:00 until the end of the video... Specially watching 3:22-3:57 i'm not sure if that's a biological woman?
It is SO EVIDENT that "she ' has NOT had ANY formal dance training
So much better than Cyndi Lauper.
MTV is only crap now
you gotta be kidding! this is terrible audio!
horrible cover
Best version of this song by far. Gritty and real rock and roll by the great Mitch Ryder. So much better than the Prince and Lauper versions.
Mitch’s cover was down and dirty, Cyndi’s was soulful.
johnnydodger Better than the Prince version? What! That was the original version.
