She was not known for being a musician. She was a spitfire of a singer/performer. Sadly about ten years too early and without the right manager/marketer.
Saw the video, bought the record, wore it out and promptly bought another....Got to see her Live at The Ritz in '85 and fell in love that night...and never saw her again....30 years later it still hurts!
radguzzi So did I and most of my Crewe. Down here in Louisiana the CowPunk look of Cowboy Boots and flowing dress was always a winner with certain cool Ladies...Long live Maria McKee in my dirty mind.
1stSaintsFan I was in the Air Force and stationed at Edwards AFB near LA I got to see LJ perform in LA and when I moved back to New Orleans that fall, I brought back their album and told my friends about them. They said if you like that, come see the guys that we're going to see tonight. That was my introduction to Dash Rip Rock and later on, Cowboy Mouth.
RobdaVegasMailman WoW!!! Love and have seen both "Dash Rip Rock" & "Cowboy Mouth" a lot over the years. I lived in Dallas from 1987-2008 and they both played shows over their many, many times. It was always great to geaux to their shows and meet other Louisiana expatriates.
RobdaVegasMailman .... I grew inthe L.A.but exploded in LA L.A.sucked LA awesome, but L.A. screwed it up after the 2005 hurricane. Do You understand? Iam miss my snowball.
Genius song writing from the late Tom Petty performed by a group who probably did not even realize the depths of their talent. Sadly underestimated and understated. Maria's voice and stage presence was mesmerizing....still is.
this song was originally offered to Stevie nicks who passed on it so tom petty gave maria McKee the track and her and lone justice cut it which made the public more aware of who lone justice the band was. it put them on the map. although they never achieved huge success they were still a well known band in the mid eighties to early nineties. maria could have been bigger as a solo star if she had proper management and promotion.
I mistakenly thought the style was Springsteen, but yea,i hear tom petty all over this track.i dont remember it from the mtv days of the 80s,but she rocks ,has an awesome voice and stage presence and is really hot
Bought this as a single when it came out - still got it somewhere. Had forgotten about it until seeing it on 'Sounds of the Eighties' on BBC4 just now, although that was an inferior (IMHO) live, faster and less groovy version. Great song, and love her voice.
My mind cleared out much of the music of the 80's, but when I saw this one it seemed familiar. Then I listened and it immediately came back! I remembered the lyrics before spoken, and beat changes. This was a good one and I am glad to be reconnected with it!
She had that perfect mix of being a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. Shades of the queen of all that Linda Ronstadt. Terrific songwriter too although this was penned by Tom Petty. Great record and imo the best version of it.
This was a modest hit on the Mtv rotation back in the day. I was working at Sound Warehouse record store at that time. I even worked with 2 famous musicians at that time. Edie Brickell and Lisa Umbarger of the Toadies in Dallas/Fort Worth area. Yes Tom Petty did write this song! When i first heard this on the radio i thought it was a new Stevie Nicks song. If Tom Petty had given this track to Stevie Nicks instead of Maria Mckee im convinced it would have been a top ten smash. Stevie Nicks rarely accepted material from other people though which sometimes came back to haunt her. For instance she turned down 2 famous number 1 songs. The first one was "Call Me" by Blondie and the second one was "These Dreams" by Heart BOTH written by Bernie Taupin who wrote or co-wrote a lot of Elton John songs. But Stevie Nicks DID accept the song "Sometimes its a bitch" written by Bon Jovi that was included on her greatest hits cd. A good song but hardly top ten material.
Something about a SUPER BEAUTIFUL Maria McKee on a Skate board just does it for me...I totally met Lone Justice in Lomita California...and Maria McKee was so Hot and cute...and my stupid camera had bad film in it ..bummer...Maria was Hot
Great Song From Yesteryear, Just Popped into My Head , Yes back In Good mtv days, Havent seen it for years but sounds like they demised quality since back then … Didn't Know Tom petty Wrote It, RIP Tom, = Sadly Missed
Why is the video so tiny ?? I saw them open for U2 many years ago at Madison square garden. They totally got there hooks I me that night . I've been a fan ever since 👍👍👍
I remember THAT day. MTV first burst on the screen. THAT day. And then, we experienced, together, World Aid. Absolutely. And Phil Collins screwed up the drums for Led Zeppelin. But that was COOL. Ms. Martha Quinn. Alan Hunter. Mr. Mark Goodman. THAT is when MTV RULED the airwaves.
Cactus Rose was great. I thought the production on the debut album made them sound like Fleetwood Mac and killed the Band. Such a great voice. Really disappointed she didn't hit it bigger. Would much rather listed to her than the Madonna's who did.
They were still pretty rootsy and on and bar room on their debut. She hit pretty darn big with her solo song Show Me Heaven 1990. 4 weeks at #1 in the UK, I believe. Main thing is she’s still doing what she loves. Plus, you can always listen to: The Western Tapes (1983) here on RUclips if that’s more your preference :)
This band should have been bigger. But the whole Cow-Punk scene was just too different for the synth-living eighties masses to go big. However, they surely could have had a better band logo on their bass drum!
A swell countr rock song and her look and character looks great, but can barely see it. Kind of wished they hadn't put a degraded fileter on it or shot it on an old crummy camera, as the quality is rough as it is. And just takes away all the detail from the viewing experience.
Maria Mckee is one of the most underrated musicians around. I loved Lone Justice, and I love Maria's solo work even more.
Me too. Maria is an amazing talent.
Didn’t hurt that she was/is smoking hot!!!
So underrated. She is phenomenal
I would compare her to the natural talent of Dolly Parton ... Maria is effortlessly better than most entertainers
@@John_Montgomery I agree
When MTV actually played videos!
Whats a MTV ? lollllllllllllllllllll
That jump to a higher register after the bridge blows me away. 2:17
She was not known for being a musician.
She was a spitfire of a singer/performer.
Sadly about ten years too early and without
the right manager/marketer.
One of the prettiest and talented musicians in my lifetime.
I agree. Maria is amazing!

i know how you feel
Superb single and album that still sounds great today. Thank you Lone Justice/Maria McKee for many great songs and memories, never forgotten!
Love Lone Justice, had the honour of seeing them live in Sheffield at The Leadmill
Aside from the song, which is brilliant, I love all the distressing and texturing of the video. That's old-school film scratching.
Love this time in my life. Wish I could go back.
Pure magic and a clasic tune one of my favouites

Man Maria sure can belt it out! Love it, love it, love it!
damn she can sing...saw Lone Justice open for The Call in Davis, CA in mid-80's...phenomenal!
great voice, love anything written by Tom Petty.
I agree! 💘🎸❤️🎶🎩

Was just thinking I can picture Stevie singing this one. I'm glad it fell in Maria's lap though. In the mid-eighties, Stevie was half-assing it.
She had a voice! Honey as well.
Ahhhh the love I have for this song and this band.
They threw a bulls-eye! Really good song.
What a set of pipes!
I love this as it reminds me of my crush so bad. She was just so wicked while hadn’t know one little thing about love.

Ways To Be Wicked Lyrics (Lyrics by Tom Petty, Music by Mike Campbell)
Honey, tell me, why you smile
When you see me hurt so bad?
Tell me, what I did to you, babe
That could make you act like that
Yes, I've been your fool before, babe
And I probably will again
She ain't afraid to let me have it
You ain't afraid to stick it in
Yeah, you know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love
Yeah, I can take a little pain
I could hold it pretty well
I can watch your little eyes light up
When you're walkin' me through hell
Yes, I've been your fool before, babe
And I probably will again
She ain't afraid to let me have it
You ain't afraid to stick it in
Yeah, you know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love
Yeah, those cobra eyes
Light with a smile
You take pride
In that devil down inside
I can take a little pain
I can hold it pretty well
I can watch your little eyes light up
When you're walkin' me through hell
Yeah, I've been your fool before, babe
And I probably will again
No, you ain't afraid to let me have it
Honey, you ain't afraid to stick it in
You know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love
You know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love

great track rock n roll :)
Half-sister to Bryan Maclean of Love. Some great musical genes there.

penned by Tom Petty and his lead guitarist Mike Campbell Gainesville RULES!
rod beauchamp hell of. A voice
Except for Danny Rolling. That guy drools.
Such a tiny girl with a voice like a freight train. Much 😘
Why is the video so tiny ?? I saw them open for U2 many years ago at Madison square garden. They totally got there hooks I me that night . I've been a fan ever since 👍👍👍
Maria was the younger version of stevie nicks because an elderly version of nicks took her thunders.
Oh, ALL of you, you just made IT. Ms. Nina Blackwood. Yes. Ms. Nina.

22 people are afraid of sticking it in
Indeed ........
I ain’t afraid to stick it in. 😎
Groovy LA cow punk...
Oh Lordy indeed
jimmy iovine and geffen screwed over Lone Justice and Maria Mckee...This band should have had a stellar career.
Saw LJ with Fishbone and...hmmm...I forget. Fishbone was fun as usual, but Maria just blew everyone outta the water.
This band should have been bigger. But the whole Cow-Punk scene was just too different for the synth-living eighties masses to go big.
However, they surely could have had a better band logo on their bass drum!

I'm pretty sure Tom Petty wrote this song.
+Tom Brennan and Mike Campbell. Good catch there!
I love this Maria Mckee Babe ! Since the 80's! "We should date." #TheChorusKing Google it.
Today's music lacks tamberine and that sucks
