One of the most underrated films to ever come out of Hollywood from the genius mind of Michael Wadleigh (based on Whitley Strieber's novel).

Wolfen is a worthy cult classic that deserves more appreciation & it unfortunately had to go up against another 2 great werewolf films in The Howling & The American Werewolf In London which were all roughly released within months of each other...
But Wolfen takes you on another journey that will linger long in your mind long after other movies of this genre fade...
As this movie is so much more & is an amazing look at the political & social state that our world has become... It has great cinematography/it also had the first use of seeing through the killer's eyes (via the camera) by something not human & along with great direction & a brilliant score by the relatively unknown at the time film composer in the late James Horner really elevated this film way beyond your typical popcorn take on the werewolf mythology & recieved world wide critical acclaim from critics that are usually quite hard on films like this, but Wolfen was rightly praised as one of the most intelligent takes on an old myth & if you haven't watched it, what are you waiting for as it's a classic that ages gracefully but never loses it powerful statement...
The only issue I have " is with this trailer " as later on buying Video Players & Renting Video Tapes became more prevalent in households & releasing films on this medium made them make the original movie trailer way too long than the original theatrical trailer as I remember the trailer for this movie & you barely saw anything with regards to onscreen footage as many films back in those days had the voice over with a few images & the basic premise of the movie...
That was it & nothing more & you had to go to the cinema to piece together that particular story but of course you knew it was a horror/comedy/drama or a thriller as that short trailer made you ask questions about whatever film was on the trailer & then you decided if your were going to go to see that particular movie in the cinema that you saw next to no trailer for...
I remember going to see " Jaws " on its first release in 1975 as a young 8 year old kid & all that had in the trailer was the film poster on screen then you saw the heads of the 3 actors pop up with the voice over saying their names & saying:
" See Jaws Before You Swim In The Ocean Again "
And that worked and Jaws was the first film to become & spawn what we now all know too well is the Summer Blockbuster Movie...
Less Is More as the movie industry thrived for many many decades on minimilist trailers & used word of mouth...
Now if you look at all the trailers on RUclips which i rarely do unless its for a short section of that trailer, All you see in the comments below is " I've just seen the whole movie within this trailer & there's no point going to the cinema to watch this movie now "
This trailer looks all to similar to todays trailers that shows way too much of story but back then they had to do the hard sell on a new medium of buying either a VHS or Betamax Player to rent out these films as you couldn't buy them until many years later...
Hence why trailers started showing more footage than was necessary to help with sales of video players & the buying of that film came many years later & then you could buy films on VHS or Betamax...
Kids or those classed as the younger generation say well there's no need to go to the cinems as we have the Internet via Downloading or Streaming/DVD & Blu Ray but we had a similar situation with video tapes, as it's the same today as it was then & you have to wait on these films to be released on these other mediums & I think it's just laziness...
The last move I went to see in the cinema was Riddick & I delibaretly didnt watch the trailers like the previous 2 movies based on this character, as I wanted to experience them on the big screen at the cinema & though ill health would take it's toll I still went to as many film's as I could but it's so bad now it prevents me doing this & I like many others loved going to the cinema to see these movies but yet again we see kids doing less & less socialising & not going to movies released in cinemas or bands or solo acts playing live & its the same response " why should i bother when I can sit at home and watch it on my laptop "
They are missing the whole point & when I went to see Riddick I didn't see anyone in that theatre that was under 30 years young...
The only movies pulling in more youthful demographic are really young kids who's parents or legal guardian are taking very young kids to see these CGI movies like Shrek/Minions/Despicable Me et al
Which is great but after they've grown up a bit too many are on their laptops or mobiles hooked on social media sites speaking to someone on the internet rather than paying them a visit or meeting up with them for a chat....
Its always been difficult to have a social life & todays working environment is not any worse than in the past as its always been hard to find time for yourself & loved one's as it was in the past & if you want a social life you have to fight for it by making time for it...
As we see more and more of our youth & a lot of older people also come home & instead of some quality time they either sit in front of you & then on their phones or disappear into their bedroom to be stuck on their phones or laptop for many hours at a time & they wonder why relationships are strained...
    I digress.....
Another great werewolf movie for me was Joe Johnston remake of the Wolfman which was championed for year's by actor Benicio Del Toro for many years to get funding & eventually get it green lit & though not well recieved by critics I loved it & it has a gothic look about it that remained faithful to the original...

Yes I was lucky to see what went on to become a social & commercial phenomenon that was the birth of the Blockbuster Movies & the love/hate affair for sharks, predominately the Great White Shark...
That movie ignited a passion in me for all things in the sea & at one time I thought of becoming a marine biologist...
My father left during the viewing of the movie to go to the bar for a few drinks which was normal for back then & I was the only kid in the audience who was watching the adults get scared out of their minds... As for me it had a different effect as I was mesmerized by this fish & though it was being portrayed as the antagonist, I saw it as a shark defending itself because it's being hunted...
Even the author of the book Peter Benchley & his Wife would go on to champion & defend the sharks (especially the great white) of the ocean until Peter Benchley passed away, as he felt it was part his fault for tainting the great white shark as a mindless hunting killing machine...
You should read the book as there are quite a few very different changes from the book to the movie & even Steven Speilberg never really had the script lock in & it was constantly being written & changing on a daily basis as they filmed that movie...
The maim reason that the Producers were freaking out about Jaws was because of the quick dailies & then when they saw it they thought this is a disaster & that was because the 3 great white sharks that were built kept breaking down in the sea as Jaws was the first movie to have all the scenes (bar one) filmed on the open ocean...
The story of the making of Jaws is as just as amazing as the actual movie itself & it was a case of you literally couldn't make up the daily stories the crew/actors & Spielberg went through to get this movie to the Big screen...
If you didn't know, once the film was wrapped (after many delays & quite a few million dollars over budget) it was shown in full to the Producers/Studio Heads & all involved with recouping the money, they were not impressed & told Spielberg that he was basically sitting on one of the most expensive movies to bomb & the cinema if released as it was & thats when he had the brilliant idea of getting John William's (film composer) on-board & use certain music sections to represent that the shark was there when it wasn't & the fact is Jaws became a massive hit by talent but also by sheer accident as it was John William's who saved the day...
Once John William's added his score Speilberg called all involved back in & showed the movie again with the music & one of the ladies who was one of its harshest critics when she first saw it without the musical score, completely changed her mind & said the movie now terrified her...
Steven Speilberg was & still is a huge fan of David Lean & Alfred Hitchock & he knew that they had used music also to imply that something had happened...
Just think of the movie " Psycho " & the infamous shower attack scene as Hitchcock used music to imply at first the horror of the attack & then using music to imply each strike of the knife as it went into flesh, when in fact it didn't & it was smart editing & music that made that scene seem as if she was being cut & stabbed with a knife...
Another movie that people think was overly violent & that it shouldn't be allowed on screen was Brian De Palma's remake of " Scarface " & that films infamous toilet chainsaw scene...
For years fans & fellow critics of the movie said that scene was too violent & they either loved it as a fan or hated it as critics about violence in movies & that it should be shortened or cut but there never was a scene where you saw the chainsaw go into the head of the person being tortured & De Palma never cut the scene either as he shot it & cut the scene just as the chainsaw goes as near as possible to the head of the person being tortured & then it cuts to another scene & the Tv in the room next door to the toilet where they are being tortured is used to mask the sound of the chainsaw by switching on the Tv & putting the volume on the Tv up very loud...
In fact all the Young Gun Director's of that time in the 70s had become & remained very close friends all through their directing careers & they would show each other their films & ask for their honest opinion & those Director's still meet up once a year to have a meal together, just as they did when they were younger & starting out in the movie business...
Those Director's are George Lucas/Steven Spielberg/Brian De Palma/Francis Ford Coppola & Martin Scorsese...
Regards your question, Yes I think cinemas will recoup their money as it's very common for movies to be delayed & their schedules changed because they don't want their movie vying against other big movies due out at the same time & they want the most amount of bums on seats (as in the audience) as possible & will delay a movie until the following year if they have to, so they can try & get as many people into the cinema as possible just to watch their movie...
In light of the still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in the world...
      Ps
Excuse any spelling errors as I'm typing this on my phone & all I have is a small limited rectangular screen to view what I'm writing down & with every sentence I write it while you up on my screen & out of my viewing, as it's just the way I have to respond via using RUclips & it's very limited regards what I can see as I'm typing & sometimes my phone will type a completely different word than what I typed as my phones developers stopped backing predictive text & I won't notice the error until I notice a Like Or A Reply on RUclips & then I'll change & amend it...

Rick Baker who went on to make An American Werewolf in London was due to to do the practical effect for The Howling but then John Landis called him up and told him Rick that he (John Landis) was now going to make American Werewolf In London...
As they had both talked about working on such a project many years prior when Rick did the effects for John's low budget creature feature " Schlock "
Rick always being the professional didn't want to leave the Director of " The Howling " Joe Dante in the shit & he had worked with Rob Bottin on the original film " Pirahna " also Directed by Joe Dante, & he knew John Bottin was one of the new up & coming great special effects guys, I think there was only a 9 year age gap as the Rick was the elder of the two of them, but 9 years is a huge gap in the movie industry especially when your talking about practical special effects but he had faith that he left the effects of The Howling in great hands...
I'd have to check but I think they did work on something else together also...
Those two werewolf movies were made by them both separately but I do believe they had a chat about where Rick was starting off with the effects but in the end they both did their own versions & it became a fun rivalry of pushing each other to deliver their best effects...
Those 2 movies were truly ground breaking as far as practical special effects go & how the traditional look of werewolves was completely changed by those 2 but I think Robs best work was on The Thing because I had read the book & at the time it was announced that John Carpenter would direct I figured there was no way that movie was going to be anything like the book but they did in fact pull it off as it's very faithful to the names of the characters & how the creature changed into different people & various species it had taken over before crash landing on Earth...
The reason I love Wolfen was because of the connection to the American Native Indians belief in shape shifting & that the creatures doing the killing though looked like wolves were in fact ancient Indian Ancestors who took the form of a wolf to preserve their land as that movie had a very strong theme of preserving the land which was originally the native americans who lived there long before the massive influx of Europeans to America...
It was also the first movie to use thermography which went on to be used only in a few famous movies & the other was the Predator franchise as the directors wanted to see the look of the hunted through the eyes of the hunter...
Add to that an amazing score by James Horner for Wolfen, who went on to make Aliens & use a specific piece of most from " Wolfen " in " Aliens " & if you've seen both you'll know the piece of music I'm talking about & he borrowed his music from previous film quite a few times but they were only small portions of the music that he felt that small parts of his music could be used again in another movie...
So ma y things elevatated Wolfen on to become a cult classic also but their take on werewolves was about the spirits of native americans protecting their land & the land of their ancestors...
If you've watched Wolfen you can clearly hear what would become James Horner's easily recognisable sound, as he wasn't that well know when he was asked to do the film score for " Aliens " but James Cameron had watched & heard his score for Wolfen & the rest is history...
What you have to take into account was my fandom & fascination with werewolf lore & legend since I was a child, whether it was in film or in story books or books about such attacks & sightings through out history & even as a kid I was never scared of the original B&W classics with Lon Chaney Junior as to me it was a metaphor used to show how we as humans can turn into savage primal animals when we want to & then change back & that is still within our genetic make up even though we have been civilized for 100s of thousands of years & more & for me this is the link in why im also drawn to finding out about serial killers & their motives & The Howling was quite smart in adding that in the start of that movie as the police & media along with the News Reporter Karens character also thought it was a serial killer...
Why they didn't made a Prequel with that character of Eddie Quist & maybe a few other's from the resort killing people in the city but it's not a serial killer but werewolves is beyond me , as they did the sequels to death & not one of them was as good or worthy as the original & I think it would be brilliant to see a prequel set in the city & long before Eddie Quists character is shoot by the police, onpy to vanish back to the colony out in the woods, as it's safe to say that even in a Prequel a character could've shot & thought they killed a werewolf only for the body to disappear from the morgue & the killings would start up again but they would just be killed by werewolves but Eddie & the others would make sure to make it look like the work of a serial killer madman or more than one working together & that way no one would know there were werewolves in the city killing people until it was too late as they soon became victims also...
My neighbor & friend from a few doors down was fascinated by by fascination with all of this & she asked me to write my own little draft for a movie & I hadn't even seen The Howling yet as it wasn't made until.a few years later & I pitched that story of werewolves killing people & making it look like serial killings & it scared the crap out of here, as I had written a small novela as a draft for her to read & my werewolves weren't like the traditional ones seen in the old B&W films but exactly like the one's in the Howling as I had seen the same classic drawing of a wolf like creature standing upright with a human in its jaws but the face looked more like a wolf...
My take on the werewolves were a combination of The Howling & the remake of The Wolfman also done by Rick Baker, as mine could run as quadrupeds which meant no one was going to outrun them...
So imagine my joy when I saw Robs take with The Howling & someone had actually did this along with Ricks take on werewolves In The American Werewolf In London...
I wasn't gutted or angry as it was always my belief of if I can think of it so can someone else & I wasn't going down the road as a writer or a special affects & make up artist as my time went into music & being in 2 professional bands but it's still somethimg I enjoy & I always look out for any new werewolf movies so I can see if they have come up with something new but The Howling & The American Werewolf In London set the bar so high that all we see is films that look like those werewolves & no new take on that genre has had such an impact since those 2 cult classics...
In light of the still ongoing coronavirus outbreak stay safe and healthy where ever you are in the world....

Great how the wolves interacted with the actors!
This stands out from the two famous werewolf movies of 1981! This is my favourite of the three and is in fact the creepiest! I don't class this as a werewolf film and it doesn't belong with the other two IMO; it just happened to be released in the same year as two successful werewolf films!
'An American Werewolf In London' was scary and funny, but 'The Howling' was dumb!

They were not being manifested according to James Olmos character in the movie, "They have always been there" The wolves were shown acting when no one else were around. There appearance to disappear at the end was a stylistic limitation of the technology of the day, They were supposed to be capable of remaining invisible whenever they wanted and were so fast you wouldn't be able to see them moving anyway. But they were definitely not spirits, and attacked the Construction executives because they were threatening the old church and demolished other buildings which they considered to be theirs

Wolfen may not be as fast-paced or as exciting as An American Werewolf in London and The Howling, which came out the same year, but I think it is the most interesting film of the three. I’m surprised it doesn’t get more attention from film buffs, because it’s a smart movie, well-shot, and has a gritty quality that sets it apart from most films of today.
