I love this country as a Dutch visitor. I’ve been there for 2 weeks last summer doing field trips (musea, temple stay, cooking, taekwando, etc.) and found out Korean people are the nicest and most respectfull people in existence.
I love the modern designs but also how everything was planned for future reuse during the summer and winter or planned to be taken down. Super practical.
I like the fact that the South Korean government set a budget, and have strictly kept to it. Here's to hoping that the 2018 Winter Games are more successful than its predecessor.
This is why you need to have Olympics in developed countries. All the buildings and infrastructure that will remain (except for the ones that will efficiently be disassembled) will continue to be used by the people and hopefully overseas bodies. The 1988 Olympics helped boost Korea's economy as will Pyeongchang. This makes me proud to be Korean.
South Korea is and has been very efficient, especially in recent decades. These buildings look like the result of fine-tuned efficiency. Magnificent accomplishments they truly are.
A follow up video about some of the other Winter Olympic supporting infrastructure is needed, such as the new KTX high speed rail line to Gangneung from Seoul due to open this year.
I hope Calgary takes advice from SK if it chooses to host 2026 olympics. Venues look great, but no ludicrous spending sprees either. Sounds good to me.
Why use Fahrenheit instead of centigrade in this video? When the presenter is British which is a metric country and he's talking about South Korea which is also a metric country
Because centigrade/celsius summer outdoor temperatures in Britain tend to sound depressingly low, the habit has developed of using that scale for winter outdoors and for cooking, but fahrenheit for summer outdoors and for indoor living areas. Weird, but comforting.
PastPresented I'm sorry but im English and have lived in Kent all my life and no one i know, even those old enough to remember the days of full imperial measurements don't use Fahrenheit.
Not to sound rude.....but most of the people that are gonna watch this video.....are from america.....yes I know RUclips is world wide but the majoirty of watchers are American....
The BBC have given up on fahrenheit these days, but some of the media haven't: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4909514/UK-wreathed-morning-mists-day-autumn.html And here's The Guardian's version of my claim: www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2014/dec/29/newspapers-run-hot-and-cold-over-celsius-and-fahrenheit
i'd rather see boring, cheap buildings than expensive, but beautiful ones. Unsustainably expensive venues serve no purpose after the games if governments cannot afford to run them. There are so many stadiums, swimming pools and other constructions around the world that have been left alone after the games.
Having been to the Sochi Olympic Park I have to admit that I'm impressed with how things have turned out, considering all the controversy before. The Iceberg is not only an absolutely stunning building, but it's the venue for ice shows throughout the year (it was Carmen when I was there; we actually skated on the rink constructed for the set). The national training centre for the Russian figure skating team is there and in constant use by the team and other club training camps, which was the reason I was there. Same with the 'puck', the hockey arena. One of the other enues has been turned into a tennis academy, and there's a track for motorsports around the outside. It still manages to feel a bit barren and lifeless, even though it's right on the Black Sea coast and aurrounded by three to five star hotels, but it could've been a lot worse. In Russia though, athletes are truly idolised like A-list celebrities, especially for sports like figure skating, which is a national sport. The government owns and operates the venues via the ministry of sport. I do think a lot of it is down to luck though, and solid planning.
herpsenderpsen This is in South Korea. Clearly, you don’t know anything about the country. FYI, SK is advanced economy. Pay a visit to the country. It would be worth of your time.
It doesn't matter HOW advanced a country is if the venues aren't being used after the games. It is a waste. Some of these Olympic sports aren't even that popular in S.Korea. And I know, I've lived there before. You misunderstood the point.
Thank you so much for making this video! Most Koreans aren’t really into the games for obvious political reasons linking back to the former president and her corruption charges but your architectural points certainly brought back my attention to the venue. And I know by now you probably got the pronunciation of ‘강릉’ spot on(so no more criticism there)!
Building a $78 million stadium only to use it for 17 days and then paying for its maintenance for years just to keep it up is even more insane. At least the initial $78 million will be more than paid for by all the paying visitors. Once the Olympics are done, who's going to pay for it then?
TheMangoGaming :D honestly yeah with counties collabing on construction of the buildings. Though a temporary main stadium is a good idea for winter since they can’t use it.
Up close and personal yet 1.6 meters (roughly 5' 3") away from the rink (at what I assume is at it's closest point)!? That's terrible the arena where I live the seats go right up to the glass!
People trashing on the temporary venue is just dumb. It’s ludicrous to sustain a more expensive permanent stadium which probably will lose it’s use after the olympics like many other countries have done in the past. Also, the stadium was designed to be mostly recyclable. The chairs will replace the old ones in the previous 1988 Seoul olympics stadium (which is still fully in use since it’s in Seoul) and the concrete used are easily recyclable.
It’s to do with those sports needing to run concurrently during the Olympics (they can’t share one rink) and the vast size of the speed skating arenas - if you were to add more rinks within that one building the construction costs of developing something so big would become very prohibitive. Vancouver managed to convert their speed skating arena into a multiple rink venue after the 2010 games - watch: ruclips.net/video/m4ysHy_Q1l4/видео.html
Interesting, how much money did South Korea spend on all olympic (stadiums, complexes, constructions) and infrastructure objects (railways, trains, hotels)? Russia spent 50 billions $ on Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
As awful it is that they had to use the protected mountain for the Alpine events is. I understand why they had to do it. I just hope after the games are over they replant and restore the mountain.
His pronunciation of Gangneung makes me cringe. I understand not getting it right cause its hard to pronounce korean but where do you find a "Y" to make it gwanyang. I mean come on.
I cringe every time he mispronounces Gangneung. It's "Gang" with an "ah" sound, same pronunciation as Psy's Gangnam Style. "Neung" is, granted, difficult to pronounce. So, here's a link to how to pronounce Gangneung: forvo.com/word/ko/gangneung/
The Pyeongchang Olympic venue is only 80km from the North Korean border. It is within the range of North Korea's 300 mm multiple launch rocket system (range 155 km). It is very dangerous to be there.
North Korea has athletes there too. Also launching abmissle where basically every country has representatives is probably the worst military move possible.
I love this country as a Dutch visitor. I’ve been there for 2 weeks last summer doing field trips (musea, temple stay, cooking, taekwando, etc.) and found out Korean people are the nicest and most respectfull people in existence.
I actually really love the simplistic, modern design of the buildings. Doesn't look cheap to me.
I agree the minimalistic design is very pleasant.
I love the modern designs but also how everything was planned for future reuse during the summer and winter or planned to be taken down. Super practical.
I am sure you will watch that olympics online with ScreenVariety.

This is no match for Sochi 2014, sorry guys :-)
Smaller budget, superior buildings and amenities than Sochi and Rio. GJ Korea.
South Korea is just beginning to show out as a better destination than like japan or China. I really want to go💖 wish I could go.
Ellie Watson- Eichorn Government has been investing in tourism recently. In short time, Korea has potential to rival Japan as a tourist destination.

I recently moved to Korea and it’s awesome!

Absolutely Amazing. What good fortune all athletes enjoy participating in the World Games!

They also built a great new Inter-Province 😂
Screen Variety is one of the best from all online televisions.
i ' m obsessed with this channel!!
Great job South Korea.
Thanks bb 감사합니다 ㅎㅎ
for destroying a protected mountain for some boring ass olympic GAMES...
Scott Free and good job at being an ass in this comment section🖕🏻
Short track speed skating and Figure skating are the key winter sports in Korea I think.
ScreenVariety is one of the best from all online televisions.
Well they did indeed put on a good show & as others have said a very friendly industrious people who live in an impressive country.
I hope Calgary takes advice from SK if it chooses to host 2026 olympics. Venues look great, but no ludicrous spending sprees either. Sounds good to me.
If Calgary is selected to host a future Winter Olympics, many of the 1988 venues could probably be used again, so that would reduce cost considerably.

Cannot wait to watch on channel 4 here in uk
That'll be the Paralympics- Olympics are still on BBC.
+PastPresented only the summer games not winter
+PastPresented hang on whoops I was wrong
What time of day will it be on in the UK?
+The B1M about 7am if I am correct like when South Korea and japan had the World Cup in 2002

My father is 77 and uses Fahrenheit. I think it was taught in British schools until the 60s.
I respect the frugalness in a way that I wouldn't without having researched the costs and ethics of the olympics.
Everybody Welcome to Pyeongchang Olympic!
I’ve Never clicked on a video so fast
Thanks!!
Complimenti...gran bel lavoro! bel video...W lo sport 2018

Thank you so much !!!
great video!
Thanks Stephen!
it's good that SK spent all this money on buildings that are for Olympics. This should go real well for the people of SK.
beautiful...
Love the 'united Korea' flags!
This is awesome, way to go S.K.!
Another great video!
Thanks!
Great video :) the city name gangneung was butchered pretty bad hahaha it made the video even better!
I'm pretty sure every hockey area has the spectators close to the ice.
He forgot to mention that the demolished main stadium’s parts will be used to renovate/fix pre existing stadiums throughout the country.
Very well make video good job!
The ice hockey arena is cheaper than one high School in New Mexico
Does he have a tongue ring?
I'm really glad for this video! But I would like to correct one minor thing.....it's Gangreung[gang-reung], not Gangneung! Hope this will help you.
Thank you so much for making this video! Most Koreans aren’t really into the games for obvious political reasons linking back to the former president and her corruption charges but your architectural points certainly brought back my attention to the venue. $78MM to build a staddium to be used for 17 days, then torn down. Total insanity.

I never got why countries are so eager to host the olympics, it's such a waste of money for temporary spotlight.
better then leaving it up and abandon.
They should honestly just have like 5 countries that host the olympics and keep on using the same buildings instead of making new ones.
TheMangoGaming :D honestly yeah with counties collabing on construction of the buildings. Though a temporary main stadium is a good idea for winter since they can’t use it.
That is not the only ski jump that ends in a soccer field!
I went ski jumping once and ended up in a soccer field. Does that count?
Great video however the ocean cluster is in the city Gangneung pronounced gangnoong.
Sorry!
No need to be sorry, easy mistake to make. Still enjoyed the video.
Up close and personal yet 1.6 meters (roughly 5' 3") away from the rink (at what I assume is at it's closest point)!? That's terrible the arena where I live the seats go right up to the glass!
Korea #1
It is so odd that all this tension on the peninsula. And the 2018 Olympics are going to be their. I hope this solves world problems, not escalate them
If you think there is tension in South Korea, you are misinformed. Look into the Qatar world cup coming soon for real tension.
Nice 👍 it’s my home 🏡 Twon . Thank you ❤️🇰🇷

youre narration is on point but boy are you hard to look at
sad to hear about the forest
The largest pilililila structure?
Well good job on their part, only thing leaving a bad taste is the forest imo.
I'm so glad it'll all be torn down after.
Damn and i had so hoped that North Korea was gonna be the host country:)
navylaks2 then north koreans will have a culture shock! How modernize people nowadays
Why can’t they just build one building to house the ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating?

whose watching it in the stadium rn
ah mate u forgot some of the most important (coolest) events!!? snowboard slopstyle and big air??
Why dismantle the main olympic stadium when it's over that stadium is hella beautiful 👎🏻😭
because they can
They don't have to maintain the facility after the games were over which could cost just as much or more to just build it
I liked it all except the part where they built the downhill in a protected forest. No bueno.
There were no 1998 summer Olympics
ain't no beef with frugal architecture
United center arena in Chicago holds 23,000 people and this rink will only hold 10,000
Move the Winter Olympics?
The B1M I don't see any other options 😂
And they were..
Why does he have a robot echo?
He’s an actual robot.
The B1M lol I think it's my chrome cast
It’s PyeongCHANG not PyeongYANG 🤦🏻♀️
'sesificcally' ??
They spent 14M ON A TRAIL FOR A SLED... WHAT DA HECK!
so?
The olympics can generate billions depending on who is running it and how they're running it.
Go Corea.
Olympics = advertising subsidized by taxpayers.
Like the vids, just one criticism. This should be about the buildings, so take your faces off. Voiceover would do just fine.
He was probably relying on Google analytic data to cater to his market
As awful it is that they had to use the protected mountain for the Alpine events is. I understand why they had to do it. I just hope after the games are over they replant and restore the mountain.
When u say money spent on Russia spent do u mean actual cost or the cost Putin supposedly charged his krones
His pronunciation of Gangneung makes me cringe. I understand not getting it right cause its hard to pronounce korean but where do you find a "Y" to make it gwanyang. I mean come on.
Ehh Ehh-- Wrong. This is Pyeongyang Olympic, North Korea.
Can you please google how to pronounce the names smh

The winter olympics became North Korean propaganda.

Didn't watch the video
This Olympic is model is tired and old. Countries go broke for nothing
yes I agree, that's why this Olympic is cheapest Olympic ever
The Pyeongchang Olympic venue is only 80km from the North Korean border.

Launching missiles at the Olympics would be an instant death sentence for N.K.!
North Korea is dumb, but even they aren't that stupid.
