The worst was Ian McElhenny playing Barristan, who was already a fan of the books. He saw D&D were destroying his character so he sent a letter to them like "uh, wtf?" and in response they killed him in some alleyway
At the least Barristan died before they could make further mockery of his character

D&D are easy to hate just because of how they blew it with the writing, but they also really just seem like a petty, spiteful pair of men. The whole "Orson Lannister" character who Jaime and Tyrion joke about before Mountain vs. Red Viper was apparently a not so subtle jab at Orson Scott Card who lambasted the show after like the first or the second season. I haven't read his critiques, but I doubt I would much agree with them considering how much I still love the early seasons. That being said never in a million years should you react with someone criticizing your work by creating a character who is them and whose only characterization is that he's intellectually disabled.

things like source material with notes usually stay with actors until death so I doubt she would sell it. They become so close and attached to the material that it carries a sentimental value to them for that person. Stanley Kubrick's archive of notes and materials didn't get released until long after his death for example.

well i dunno if what ur saying makes sense. it might be the exact opposite. it seems the reason the last couple seasons were bad was because there was no source material left for them to work off. its as if they learned nothing and decided to wing it.
I think the problem was that there was no source material for the last two seasons. They deviated starting season two, but there was always story until S6, despite major plotlines for the books ending in S5. They had to work more on George's word of what was coming than actual book material.
Nor in 5, 6, 7 or 8. People are so focused on season 8, but 5-8 are all miserably bad.
Yeah, 7 & 8 were egregious and entirely unbecoming, while 5 & 6 were more like Vikings or somesuch.
I like Emilia's attitude in wanting to not read ahead of where her character was at the time. One book at a time, on season at a time.
I don’t buy it. Personally I always think there are two types of people when it comes to reading novels for pleasure; those who consume like a crack head and those who lie.

Honestly the 8th season had major problems, everything felt rushed. Allot of logic went out the window. However the Arc of Daenerys going down the path of evil to be killed by John Snow I actually like. It just could have been done better writing and directing wise in the final season, however the main point of it is actually brilliant. The story of "Game of thrones" is about how power corrupts. Daenerys went down a darker and darker path, because she cared about the people of Westeros, (the road to hell is paved with good intentions) and because she cared about what she "deserved." She was a good person and a sympathetic character, innocent in the beginning, she became more powerful and did noble things like freed slaves and people loved her for it. (however she also in her power and anger crucified hundreds) She was always on that edge of going too far but held back until the end. Everyone wanted John Snow to be king but they also failed to realize this was a story about how the "game of thrones" and power corrupts and destroys. John Snow is the real hero and victor because he leaves it all behind not for power but for himself.

The aspects that annoyed me allot in the final season: Sudden rushed battle against the night king in the dark with no satisfying conclusion and lots of weird nonsensical decisions like putting your catapults in front of the wall and suicide charging into a horde. That battle alone deserved multiple episodes at least. I have a feeling in the book this will be a much different encounter. The Dragon suddenly showing up out of thin air to surprise a boat... On open water when they could have seen it coming 600 meters away... The meeting of Queen Cersei and Daenerys outside of kings landing (why wouldn't Cersei just use the ballista to shoot the dragon and massacre the tiny group? Does Cersei suddenly care about being honorable or honest?) It was just silly stuff like that, that didn't seem to have allot of thought behind it, when previously game of thrones clearly had allot of thought and good writing.
The major plot of season 8 was actually good, just poorly executed, I think it gets way too much hate on places like reddit. A way to common criticism I hear is "They just made Daenerys evil for no reason"

Rob was a father figure to who?
Catlyn was a father figure to who? (I count her dead.)
Joffrey was a father figure to who?
While the main main characters are Dany, Tyrion, Jon, Bran and Arya. If Rob would not have died so early he probably would be a main character as well, no?

And Jof isn’t even a POV or anything close to a main character so I’m confused why you’d bring him up. And everyone you listed had a father/protector type die. So let me give you a few examples 1 Kal Drogo was Danny’s protector and made her feel safe, 2 obviously Ned Stark, 3 Rob and cat for Arya ( FYI rob didn’t have POV chapters) yoran of the nights watch another one for Arya 4 Yezzem the slaver that bought Tyrion, 5 the half hand and jeor Mormont for Jon. Also I didn’t come up with this, there’s way better posts on Reddit that back up my original comment I wish I was smart enough to come up with that on my own
Rob and Catelyn immediately spring to mind, neither of them are father figures. Or even King Robert, who was a father, yes, but no father figure.
Edit: I see, you mean more like protector figures. But I would argue Rob isn't really a "protector figure" to Arya, that would be Jon.
Geoffrey might not be a POV character, but neither are Drogo, Tywin or Ser Barristan.
But to an extent it makes sense that some notable protector figures end up dead, doesn't it? Since they have people to protect, and can't simply watch out only for they own safety
That's what I was thinking while watching season 1. That Ned was the hero of this story. He can't die. I kept believing until the last second that someone will jump in and save him. Then I was like, "What? He really died?" 😢
That's when I realized it was going to be so much better and more interesting and darker than I had imagined.

can't wait to play Elden Ring which the world building and parts of the lore was written by GRRM mixed with another genius Myazaki who's written the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne
From what I've seen from interviews with George, he consulted on the lore and world building during like one phone call with Miyazaki. Seems like he provided some ideas, but I think it's a stretch to say he 'wrote' it. I think the companies involved just really want to push the idea that this is George Martin's video game. I'm still excited for it as well, but video game publishers love selling the hype more than the product.
@@CSelH I heard GRRM say he wrote the 'world building' in an interview, I don't think Miyazaki would have GRRM involved if he didn't want GRRM to write any of it.
and I don't think they'd list him as the Writer of Elden Ring if he didn't write anything.
@@CSelH I'm a little more optimistic. I think GRRM is just keeping tight lipped until the game comes out. We'll see. If he's quiet when it releases we'll know you're right. But until then it's Schrodinger's cat.
@@CSelH whatever gave you the idea it's one phone call... They've met in person multiple times and grrm basically wrote the whole lore, just years ago.. and iirc, Miyazaki said it was the first time they had the lore even before a lot of the core gameplay
@@Raymando yeah from my understanding, GRRM built the world and wrote the lore, while Miyazaki and his writers handled the story of the game within that world

I love that they read and enjoyed the books! Some actors (including from GoT) say they don't read them because they just want to go by the script, but how dumb is that? You can get so much insight by reading the book, plus they're amazing
That's not dumb. Same reason actors don't watch the original play the movie is based on or the original movie that they're remaking. They don't want to have insight that their characters wouldn't have.
Itd a job, after all. You need focus. Some get that by reading more, some by reading less.
I love Emilia Clarke. Daenerys Targaryen was and still is my favorite GOT character. Emilia Clarke was born to play this character. Incredible character. She was a exiled princess. A frightened young woman who transformed and became a powerful woman and she set out to take back her rightful inheritance The Iron Throne. I was really angry when I watched the final season. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff the showrunners ruined the character and destroyed her character arc. She was supposed to be the hero, but they turned her into the villain. Dany going psychotic and unjustly wiping out King's Landing's innocent population really wasn't right for the character and idiot Jon Snow killing Daenerys Targaryen really killed Game of Thrones for me. Worst - ending - ever... Daenerys Targaryen deserved better and the series itself deserved a better ending. Thanks a lot D.B. and David!

It was how contrived and how quickly the "Dany going mad" storyline happened that ruined it. No doubt she will go "mad" in the books too, but it will either happen over a period of time or will actually make some fucking sense.

george doesn't kill his characters randomly. Ned Stark died because he was too honorable to play the game of thrones. Khal Drogo died because he got a terrible wound and because of Daenerys' naivety, Robb broke the honor of House Frey by marrying Jeyne Westerling(or Talysa) and died and got his mom dead in the process. many of these fan fav characters died because they were in situations they could not escape alive. their deaths had great impact in the lives of the main characters and with helping on driving the plot forward. in the last seasons of the show, big characters either escaped death due to plot armour or some died just for chock value. their deaths had zero impact in the lives of the main characters.
The worst imo was Varys. What a waste. And Littlefinger the season before.

Where was all the rage when they actually started to ruin it completely?! People only complained when their Mary Sues didn't get the ending they thought of. It was too late for the blindfold to be taken off from people's eyes. Maybe if the majority weren't blind fans back then, we could've gotten a better conclusion, maybe even new writers. Backlash of such scale then would have certainly gotten HBO to think.

The books are an incredible read, the show is a horrendous watch. From the first moment in season one (where they ignored the book plot and took so many liberties). To season 8. What a mess.
