Well my TSR 2 Driver fitted with Hzrdus CB as fitted spun 1000 more rpm the when the TSR was fitted with my old TS2 Hzrdus Smoke shaft. This did tighten up on my dispersion. So from this test yes shafts do have a major effect on ball performance! Well did for me!
Yes. Got fit at callaway. Tried loads. Ended up with a shaft I never would have picked. Ever! But it gave best numbers with the head I preferred. And it wasn’t an upsell shaft either.
I’m presently looking at a change of shafts…..I will be 70 soon, so reality is I’m becoming weaker. Im presently playing with regular shafts. I do have the tensie blue in my driver which I like. I struggle to get the fairway woods up into the air. I’ve ordered two Maltby MH 890 Launch Tech shafts for my 3 wood and my 5 wood. They are A flex tipped to make them play like a soft regular. My hope is they will allow me to launch the ball higher! You are completely right…..experimentation is important. Thanks for this great video, you descriptions of the differences between these shafts was very informative!……thanks from 🇨🇦😀
When I was fitted for my TSi4, I hit five or six shots with each of the the stock shafts and didn't get on particularly well with any of them. Then I hit the Graphite Design Di6 S ..... a perfect match for my swing dynamics.
Interesting to hear Dan talking about comparative fatigue from hitting 14 drives with different shafts ….especially after watching Bryson speed training and battering 200 plus golf balls at full bore .
I would think in the UK, you would want carry, especially in the winter. I play in a relatively wet area, and I always out drive my friends because my ball gets there in the air. The only time they get close is in the summer when they roll it.
I’m blown away that the swing weights are D8 and D5. Men’s standard iron swing weight is D2 and woods are almost always lighter and wedges slightly heavier.
I recently had a driver shaft fitting to help improve strike, which gained me the extra yards and less dispersion. The weight and bend profile is far more important than flex
I just play what I like the feel of. I’ve stuck with penley shafts. They say on their site they try to make a mid launch/spin and shaft that fits 70% of swings. I tried ventus black and red and always return to my penley. Once I find something I like I stick to it. Also have a ventus red and black for sale now… great video Dan.
I remember watching a Mizuno video, where Nick Faldo had a shaft fitting, it was incredible how he could feel the slightest changes in the various shafts, his feel was super sensitive and super accurate to what shafts they were giving him each time.
Dan, the sidespin and dispersion with the PX Red shaft was very tight compared to all the others, and apart from one pull shot would have found the right half of every fairway, not the left which is your miss. Contrary i know but less than 10 yards of distance lost??????
Fitted for Hzrdus Red CB in TRS2. Jury still out after much fiddling! Have been known to take my old TS2 out which seems to be straighter if not a little less distance!
Shaft is critical timing device. I tend to respond to weight and bend profile. Form handle and tip with some give in the middle. Play the Tensai Orange in Driver and Fairways for last few seasons. Carries a little more weight under the hands. Works well with Ping G410 head. Prior to that played Diamana Blueboard for forever!
That’s quite timely, I have just gone through a fitting. For me shafts make a difference the 1K blk is what I ended up with & noticeable flatter flight love the feel of it. I love the sound of the TSR, tried the ping & just could not get on with it & the noise was horrific.
I have always liked Ian Fraser's (of TXG) description of the shaft as a timing device and that the correct shaft (weight, flex, bend profile, swing weight) will help optimise the club to a golfers swing characteristics. It's also worth remembering that how a golfer reacts to a particular shaft can vary
Excellent review, as a titliest player and a senior with approximately 100 mph clubhead speed the 50g stiff is the one l use. Have gained at least 10 yards from my old 65g stiff l used up to 2021. All fitted just age catching up.
Nice comparison dan. It shows that there is a difference between brands/models, how much difference it has obviously depends on the individual. Your results are different but still quite close that you could probably use any of those and still get good results on the course. A vid about shaft flex could be an interesting one. If you done a blind test from L flex up to x-stiff and see what that produces and only reveal what shaft is what after you have got your data
I've always struggled with heavier shafts. Difficulty in squareing the club face. I've been playing Riptide 50 gram cb in a Stiff and love it. Used it in Radspeed and now Aerojet. 👍
One company’s stiff is another’s x and so on ,I think kick point and weight are the most important aspects of what feels right to each player not so much what flex is stamped on the shaft .You make a good point Dan on the Mitsubishi shafts in blue ,they have always been kind of mr average ,no matter what the flex says ,I’m using the Tensi 65 blue x and before I used the blue board and b series in same flex ,very nice smooth shafts with a mid kick point and a series of shafts you don’t have to swing out of your boots the whole round .A good head and shaft combo that feels feels good is all that matters ,so try a few or get fitted ,but I do think the shaft is important for sure .
I think the miyazaki international bend codes should be adopted by all manufacturers. Gives a much better idea of bend points. In case anyone doesnt know, it works on 4 numbers between theoretically 1-9, 1 being like a stick of liquorice and 9 being like an iron bar. Each section having a number, butt, mid section, lower section and tip. There are so many options of shafts out there and your comparision confirms its more about small incremants
I got fitted for new irons around 8 months ago. I tried out the MMT shaft, and for me it was dreadful, but having then tried the recoil dart, the difference was like night and day, they were awesome 😊
Interesting dan it does stand to reason that the weight and flex of a shaft does make a difference all be it slight but over a period of time that difference could be a lot. I know my speed has sowed of the years and I always used a stiff shaft, but I had a fitting last year and I was put into a medium shaft and lighter one throughout my bag. And once a came to terms with that I felt better, and I have to say ego can be a big disadvantage to your game, and like you say over a round the difference can be huge with how fatigued you may feel at the end of a round.
Really interesting - happy to say I know very little about shafts and fortunately use a great fitter who does!! Only really able to feel when a shaft is too stiff for me and would be too hard work over 18 holes. Loving the Tensei Blue in my newish 3 wood, so will look at it if I change my driver.
The answer is that it depends. For some people their swing makes them shaft agnostic, you could give them just about any shaft of any flex and weight and within a few swings they would adjust and end up with identical performance. For me shafts make a very noticeable difference - it is more the weight than the flex that I react to
The video helps. I have non-stock Tensei AV Blue S-flex 68 grams in a TSR3 10 degree. Didn't want to have to go after it every drive with Tensei Black stock shaft.
Can’t imagine D8 is suited to your game Dan?! Also, one key stat you need to pay more attention to is descent angle….. you’re averaging well in excess of 40 degrees which is far too high and will rob you of total overall distance due to zero run out. Looking at your data overall, there is a lot of room for improvement but without you having to do very much. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, you would benefit hugely from a high level fully independent fit for the correct shaft. Simon Cooper at Precision Golf is the best of the best in the UK and would optimise your performance no question. Great RUclips channel too so take a look when you have a mo and you’ll see what I mean. (He fits Monty amongst others)
Shaft made a difference to me when I was fitted with irons and driver. Driver shaft made a big difference in feel and shot shape. Irons a lighter shaft gave me a much better ball flight and some yardage gains. In saying that I can hit just about any club reasonably but can definitely feel difference between them.
I would be interested in how shaft stiffness affects slow swing speed players. As a senior golfer with a 75-80mph swing do I even have enough speed to see much difference in shafts?
Dan I find 60 gm shaft regular is the perfect for me ,i have been playing 60 gm for nearly 7 years but when I bought my new driver it had hazardous 50 gm I didn't like it first it took me few months to get use too to it.
I heard someone say once that shafts matter less than how the golfer reacts to it. Or as I'd less eloquently say, "get fitted so you can find the shaft that maximizes your ability to hit the ball as far and straight as your ability allows".
I have to like the look first, then the price, then the feel. Can't afford to be choosy. I went from a 50 g at D1 to a 65g at D4 both regular. Felt too heavy so I counterbalanced to D2. Ball flight too low so upped it to 11*. Straighter and further than the first one. Mind you I only hit it 230yds now, so did it really all matter?
Perhaps shaft flex and kick points are not as critical in wedges and short iron, but in my experience, shafts make a major difference in the longer clubs in the bag. Obviously driver, and fairway woods. I have a Ping G20 Driver that keeps finding it's way back into my bag because the driver head/shaft combo with lower kickpoint works so well to get the ball up over trouble and works a nice predictable fade. Sure it isan't the longest driver as is, but fine for the 400 yds or less par fours and shorter par fives.
That hazrdous red with hardly any side spin is interesting. I would knock the loft down half a degree and give that a try. I bet you swing it faster too and you could go longer in length to increase club speed and to increase swingweight back where you want. Worth a test at the very least!
Interesting to see that for players with your ability in terms of numbers we’re talking about marginal differences in terms of overall distance (257-264 yards overall). Although of all the shafts, the red was the only shaft that went slightly offline to the right (3.1R overall in the numbers) with all other shafts going offline to the left. Would be interested to hear more about why this would be the case. Ultimately for all of us weekend hackers my guess is that the most important factor here will be “feel”.
These results are consistent with similar tests. When skilled players hit with a set of shafts to find differences, they find that generally speaking, there aren't many. I've thought that this kind of experiment would potentially be more fruitful if it were run with less skilled hitters. My swing is pretty good, but doesn't have a lot of speed. When I try different shafts, I can see some differences in flight and distance, and for whatever reason, have found that the Graphite Design shafts seem to work best. They have a nice feel, and the "stiff" isn't as stiff as some of the other brands' stiffs. I also like the Ventus, but those are super expensive.
Shafts are a timing mechanism and can affect face strike location significantly which will impact spin and launch. Very important piece of the overall club fitting process.
I've seen some shaft testing by Pro's whereby they hit balls using simulator analysis with an X Stiff . Stiff , Regular and Senior shaft and there was not an awful lot of difference in distance or control between them.
They definitely make a difference for most individuals. They may not follow the manufacturers specs regarding high/low spin etc. depending on how the golfer reacts to the feel.
Interesting video. When I’ve had “fittings” in the past I don’t recall trying anything other than different heads, maybe S v R shaft of same brand. Would be interested to see you do blind test with different flexes
I just have to make do with a stock shaft, I’m not paying 2 or 3 hundred more dollars for a after market shaft. I’ve never thought it would make enough difference to my game. I’ve had fittings and I’m a pretty standard club fit or at least that’s what I’ve been told and I wasn’t really impressed with any of the fitters and one was in the top 100 in the US but to be fair he didn’t have much to work with as my swing was pretty bad at the time lol
Interesting Dan, nicely done and clearly shows not much performance difference in ur hands. To confirm, were they all in stiff flex? Plus would say ur driver at D8 would feel heavy for most, but is a clear personal preference for you? How does that swing weight relate to the rest of your set?
Hi. I've just ordered a new driver with the Mitsubishi Tensei 65g. Is there any significant difference between the same models (e.g. Tensei AV Blue) but 55g vs 65g?
I was waiting for the magic 262 but it never came. Interesting video, I plan to get a Titleist driver fit fairly soon. Would like to see a similar video on iron shafts.
Absolutely makes a difference. Last year I took the same driver head and tried about 8 different shafts. 3 felt like garbage out of the box, another three were unplayable, while 2 of them could have been gamed.
I think it depends on the golfer and how sensitive they are for me personally i can feel small differences between shafts and im pretty fussy. A mate of mine can not feel the difference betweeen a piece of bamboo and a length of steel re-bar he has no feel whatsoever for what the shaft is doing.
Shaft is very important in my driver setup. Despite having similar ball speed to you Dan, I cannot for the life of me seem to get very much spin. Ended up with a hzrdus smoke red rdx to help with that (low 2000s). The best shaft for me when I did my fitting was the Ventus Red, but £350 on a shaft ain't happening 😅
@@DanHendriksenGolf I don't have the data unfortunately (Silvermere didn't want to send it to me 🤔) but the fitter reckoned it was my -1 to 0 angle of attack, combined with strikes higher on the face. So he focused on getting the strike more centred and in a head/shaft combo that got more spin out of that attack angle = G430 max was the answer!
I think shafts matter but not so much in flex. Weight and where it is positioned is a bigger factor in my opinion. Don’t go down the rabbit hole of swing speed = flex. I play X flex driver shaft but reg flex irons.
Suggest Dan that you rethink why you hit a driver. A driver is supposed to be given a wack to get it as far down the fairway as possible. I don't see any tour pros trying to nurse their driver. Personal opinion, you look more in sync when you are swinging faster.😊
IMO Yes 100% they do. Not necessarily the flex of the shaft as in stiff/regular etc but more the weight of the shaft and where in the shaft the weight is placed. I personally think we need to move away from the idea of because you swing at a certain speed that means you fit into a certain flex. Seen alot of video's which have proven that to be NOT the case. Weight and feel in my opinion are the most important factors.
Shafts do matter. The light shaft extra spin could be offset with a low spin head which would be covered in a fitting. If the light shaft times better then that’s what works
Why do these places that fit properly exist and are extremely busy i.e precesion golf in Surrey theres a another specialist in derby another YT Uber used
First shaft probably would have thrown out the 148 ball speed numbers. Second was pretty consistent speed. Third the same. Last the range was 150-157, spin was all over the place and the 270 carry and roll is a questionable number. Would of liked to see you measure frequency of these shafts since shaft flex ratings don't mean anything. No standard flex in the industry. Just a little more digging into. I have seen quite a few players that go through a fitting with demo shafts that when they get there driver, it's not even close. Too many OEM's sort there flex by weight.
I've just been for a driver fitting this week and found the Tsr 2 was the best driver for me! Also Hzrdus black in stiff was the shaft I've ended up with which is abit mad after just watching the video. Picking it up tomorrow 🏌️ Great video 👍
Always laughed at how much Mark Crossfield has denied the importance of shaft. He's always said strike is the most important factor but ignores the fact shafts can fine tune timing, control of the clubhead and therefore strike!
What is a point of "comment below" thing in the middle of the recorded Vid? If it is a live show, it might be relevant. Whoever started this trend is stupid, not encouraging to leave a comment.
You have 😂 it just helps with keeping the video pushing along with YT, the more engagement from the audience the more YT push the video. You are free not to comment
i was a scratch golfer. 3 years ago. got fitted for the first time and it completely ruined my game. im now off 3 and have zero confidence and have pretty much given up the game.

I think the miyazaki international bend codes should be adopted by all manufacturers. Gives a much better idea of bend points. Hzrdus Red sounds very interesting for my game as I have lost some distance w/age. Thx for the great review and numbers comparison

Yes, depending on swing speed, it can make a club turn over too quickly/, or adversely, remain open at impact.
Depends on the standard of player
Absolutely makes a difference. Last year I took the same driver head and tried about 8 different shafts. 3 felt like garbage out of the box, another three were unplayable, while 2 of them could have been gamed.

Yes yes and yes again. It is the MOST important part of the fit
I think shafts matter but not so much in flex. Weight and where it is positioned is a bigger factor in my opinion. Don’t go down the rabbit hole of swing speed = flex. I play X flex driver shaft but reg flex irons.
Some, but you can adjust!
Absolutely yes
I like hazardous red.
100% it does.. that said it doesnt mean it has to be a crazy expensive aftermarket shaft either.
Dan! What are the lengths of those shafts?
45.5
Thx, Dan. I just realized those D5 drivers are because those shafts are probably counter balanced?
Suggest Dan that you rethink why you hit a driver. A driver is supposed to be given a wack to get it as far down the fairway as possible. I don't see any tour pros trying to nurse their driver. Personal opinion, you look more in sync when you are swinging faster.😊
Sure does 👍
IMO Yes 100% they do.
100% yes. Always pay for up charge in shaft.
The correct shaft is essential for your game.
Shafts do matter. The light shaft extra spin could be offset with a low spin head which would be covered in a fitting. If the light shaft times better then that’s what works
It sure does, go and get a proper fitting and watch the difference 👍🏻
I think they do matter , if only in feel and weight
Of course they do
In skilled hands I would guess there is a tangible difference-in a choppers hand, like myself, probably not!
Why do these places that fit properly exist and are extremely busy i.e precesion golf in Surrey theres a another specialist in derby another YT Uber used
Yes and yes and yes again of course it does
Tensei black 47 yards left? 😂 the lighter shaft was a bit shorter and a lot straighter
The right shaft makes a huge difference.
Never neglect the shaft Dan...😂
If Mark Crossfield is right, shafts will make little difference except for feel. Interested to see what you find.
Mark Crossfield .like anyone else is entitled to his opinion,I don’t agree with him though .
D8 crazy heavy. Long I guess
My bird says it does 😂😂
😂
My wife says it doesn't, it's how you deliver it that counts
@Chris-es9hn as long as its a stiff?
I've just been for a driver fitting this week and found the Tsr 2 was the best driver for me!
Also Hzrdus black in stiff was the shaft I've ended up with which is abit mad after just watching the video.
Picking it up tomorrow 🏌️
Great video 👍
YES!😂
More location jumps than a series of Quantum Leap.
😂 I like to keep you on your toes and yes I was exhausted after filming this
Shafts always matter, as do grips.
It’s just as important as the head but more importantly it’s what you do with it 😂😂
Significant difference - it appears shafts has made the most technological change in the last five years
Always laughed at how much Mark Crossfield has denied the importance of shaft. He's always said strike is the most important factor but ignores the fact shafts can fine tune timing, control of the clubhead and therefore strike!
The results are not remarkably different. Ultimately feel will be important in making a choice
Nobody has answered ? Really ?
Its a massive difference for me, especially in the driver. Is this really a valid question these days?
Sorry Dan could not disagree more on your analysis. Shaft fit is critical to performance
Shafts are the engine. Head to me is a visual. Off the shelf shafts are awful
i was a scratch golfer. 3 years ago. got fitted for the first time and it completely ruined my game. im now off 3 and have zero confidence and have pretty much given up the game.
Playing of 3 now ! How embarrassing , yeah mate sounds terrible ,best of taking up darts .
