When I heard John Paul Jones was in this lineup, I did a double take. Just imagine if Iommi was added to the roster that would be insanity! Definitely a good lineup.
Even better, per Dave, another bass player got wind of this project and asked if he could play bass in it.. Dave had to tell Paul McCartney that John Paul Jones was already in the band.
Have to agree with you there. Given the general direction rock was heading at the time, Them Crooked Vultures was a tremendous reminder that great music was still out there and didn't have to be formulaic to be successful. I wish that lesson hadn't faded so quickly.
Fact: John Paul Jones put the band together so I can't see how that last fact can be correct about not having him in the band initially. Or at least that's what I heard.
This album is one of the most interesting collaborations in modern rock music. It's in my top 5 albums, and will always remain there. Timeless and fresh
David Grohl was a huge reason he ever got famous. Dave was a big Kyuss fan and brought them out to open for Nirvana. Metallica heard them on this tour, and booked them to play the Australia tour as well. Josh met a ton of key players in these early days (mid to late 90s). There's a cool free documentary on youtube about this story, as well as the larger music scene that Josh is from. I believe it is called "Desert Age" or something. You'd probably dig it.
@@BradyGalloway Maybe we'll get lucky! Josh and Dave are wrapping up tours, JPJ is just hanging around, and they've all talked about it. Now's the time, the time is now.

He's definitely got a cool taste in music. He used to listen to Qotsa, Radiohead, Bjork, Deftones, some norwegian rock bands and tons of other things. So he's one of the reasons why i got into music in the first place.
OMG! YES! TCV were/are amazing. Loved that album. I discovered them via their Austin City Limits performance. I was like "wow, that John Paul Jones!" and then became a huge QotSA fan soon thereafter due to Josh.
Now I feel old. Dave Grohl is more known for Foo Fighters. Given how they’re still super popular, I wonder how many fans they have that haven’t even listened to Nirvana despite their legend status. I wonder how different it will be in another 20 years
Yeah that's crazy to think of. Most of the people watching my videos are either 18 - 25 yo, or 25 - 35 yo. Those in the latter group probably remember him just as much from both the groups. Dave first started to become a known persona when he made the Foos. Kurt took most of the spotlight back when Nirvana was still around. So it's not that odd that he's more famous for being in the Foos.
This is one of my all time favorite albums. Thank you for making this. I did NOT know about all the extra material that we haven’t heard......now I’m obsessed with finding it.
For me definitely Spinning in daffodils, it was my least favorite at first but then it got to grow on me the song starts so beautifully and it just gets stomped on. Like someone stomping a bird which is whistling beautifully. That the whole thing I love about the album, all the songs are really fucking ugly.
Such an amazing record from phenomenal musicians. A good bit of the material (like the funky bouncy riff on Gunman) was stuff John had been toying with back in the Zeppelin years.
For sure. I listened to Led Zeppelin 4 yesterday and there's stuff in there that's similar to this record. I agreed on that. Misty Mountain Hop for example. Such a groovy and dizzying progression in that song.

This album. I remember back in 2011 I first listened to it. I was just getting into Foo Fighters because of Wasting Light. Then I saw somewhere that Dave played drums with some dude names Josh Homme and JON PAUL FRIGGIN JONES. I quickly googled them, and the first song that came through was Elephant... and it just didn't grab me. I was expecting something much more commercial. So I kinda forgot about it. 6 years later I re-discovered them, after broadening my likes and the music I listened to. I relistened to Elephant and DAMN. The twists and turns of that song, the drum groove, just about everything. Then I listened to the whole album and I came a few times.
I still remember putting the album on for the first time in the car after work. I was enjoying the first track "Nobody Loves Me & Neither Do I" when a couple minutes in the time signature change drops. "Oh hell yes, JPJ! This album is gonna kill it." Such a cool story man! I was in a similar place a few years ago. I only ever listened to classical music and I hated everything else. I was going through a real rough patch in life and I was never happy- and one day MCR turned up in my RUclips recommended and I listened to it. I hated it at first, but I kept coming back for more and soon enough I was addicted to this new world of rock music. And that's what got me playing the guitar! Thank you My Chem :)))
I've listened to TCV over and over as well as lotsa QOTSA, and am continually amazed at the range and well, overall weirdness of Josh's vocals, so much to the point that half the time I'm not sure it's even Josh at all...like, who is this guy that's singing NOW? It's like he's got a weird cameleonesque quality to his vocals, from guttural to falsetto and all things in between, bless him!
Ok I can't believe I found this video so late. Them Crooked Vultures is one of my all time favorite albums ever. I disagree with people that think it sounds a lot like Songs for the Deaf, maybe a little on the surface but TCV songs are so much more layered and dynamic. I remember the first time I noticed there was another instrument doing an amazing riff during the guitar solo from "Scumbag Blues". I remember how my heart was beating hearing the intro and outro of "Elephants". And I remember my sheer confusion over what was happening during "Interlude with Ludes". I could go on and on about this record fr. One thing I find really telling is that both Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters released the best or close to the best albums of their careers right after Homme and Grohl did TCV. Wasting Light is my favorite Foo record and they really have not come close to reaching that level again ever since. And ...Like Clockwork is just leagues ahead of any other Queens album for me. I really believe they could come back, do a TCV double record, this time not worrying about physical sales and such as much, and it just being freaking amazing. And then Foo and Queens coming fresh in four years with freaking bangers to boot. One can only dream man.
I caught them in Germany the last night at rock am ring in 2010. Such a great show! Alain is an amazing player as well, glad you did a little bit on him.

I really hope they make another record, they are an amazing band, I want to hear the outtakes!
Same here. I bet the outtakes were at least of some quality too.
Them Fresh Pots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't get any fresher
Such a cool story man!
Now days Pink Floyd, Queen and My Chem are my favorite artists ever :D
Can you do a video on The Clash?
I’d ask you to make a video on Understanding Yes, but I don’t think anyone fully understands their music. Not even Jon Anderson
Well it's worth a try. It's gonna take me a lot of time to make though.
Lie Likes Music
Fair enough haha
Remember? How could anyone forget!
It wasn't a question hehe.
Love your videos, man. We seem to be kindred spirits when it comes to music.
Hehe. I'm not 100% fan of all the bands i've made videos about, but definitely a lot of them. Thanks for supporting me!
The record doesn’t do them justice, saw them twice on the tour and they remain two of the best gigs I’ve ever seen
Good to hear that they were great live as well. Or it's a little sad actually, since i'll probably never e able to see them
perform.
Bangin! Getting dusted off and played this morning...
Glad that you made a video about them!!!
I think we needed this. Thanks for watching btw!
Fantastic material of a fantastic band. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video 🤘 it's hard to find people who appreciate this band as much as I do, or even know who they are ha
Well there's tons of people here if you look in the comments. So i guess we're all gathered.
"Mind Eraser, No Chaser" is one of the best rock songs of the past 20 years.
Why do you think so?
Gosh I love this guy
Dave, John, Josh.. Me??
When grunge and classic rock merge together like two different ice cream flavors melting together
I wouldn't call this grunge. It's more like a hard-rock, blues and prog-rock mix.
Lie Likes Music I agree
Jesus! I feel old if you were a teenager just listening to this.
It's more than one year I listen to this album on RUclips. Then, last september I got this CD, and since then I listen to it at least 5 days a week! ;)
That's awesome dude! Are you a fan of any of the other bands? Foos, Qotsa or Led Zeppelin?
@@LieLikesMusic Yes, QOTSA in particular, I also got their last album, "Villain". I'm italian and I want to give you a tip, if I can, follow these bands: "Bunuel" ruclips.net/video/CWPExqzuAbc/видео.html (3 italians + 1 american) and "Il Teatro Degli Orrori" (ITDO, as shortname) ruclips.net/video/ZgH6O1KX20g/видео.html (two of its members are also part of Bunuel)
A great album and band. Let’s hope there’s more to come
Yupp i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
7:34 Whenever I see that video I can't stop laughing :D " Six drug ? It's been more than that ahahaha. Ihıhıhıhhıhıh, hı hııgh... I'm a a aaa I need to need to hear that question again, I'm sorry. "
It's a classic. Love how these guys often just joke around in interviews. It's easier to relate to them.
I watched it over and over to see John as Dave fall out 😭
A brilliant stroke of genius to invite John Paul Jones to into the other two wonderful musicians.
That is so true. Have you seen this live video of them? The piano autro by JPJ at the end should've been
on the studio version of the song. It's another level of epic ruclips.net/video/OMFTSmnQT7A/видео.html
