Songs For the Deaf is one of the last great hard rock albums of recent memory. It’s just bass, drums, guitar and plain ol’ OVERDRIVE. It saw Queens of the Stone Age capitalize on their unique position in rock, assembling a one-time-only, star-studded line up for a loose concept album: a drive through the blistering California desert. Buckle up.

The drum intro to Song for The Dead still gets me hype to this day
Half this album is in my workout playlist. Actually like half of their whole discog. But the drums on this record are on point, grohl is at his peak here.
Agreed. Can't believe it wasn't explicitly highlighted here.

Impressive... Now tell everyone how criminally underrated Lullabies to Paralyze is!
*Era Vulgaris
I haven’t forgotten about that album! I mean I got Bulby tatted on me for Josh sakes. Not to mention Turnin on the Screw is probably top 3 favorite.
Lullabies is a great record. Its one of those records that you can just put on, push play once, and let it play all the way thru. From top to bottom it's aces!! 😎🤓
Nah first three albums are the best, it all went down hill fast after Nick got kicked out as lost that edge..
I've never understood the hate for Lullabies to Paralyze. . . It's an amazing record in its own right, I just think it wasn't what a lot of fans of the band wanted or expected. I'm glad though that the fans at the very least seem to respect how good their touring lineup and live shows were from that era.
At this point, I've sort of accepted that I'm not going to 'get it' right away with any new album they release, that I'll be left scratching my head for many years to come before I can fully appreciate each record for what it is. . . My inital reaction to Like Clockwork wasn't good, simply because I wanted a heavier record. I'm only just starting to realize how awesome Villains was, despite some flat sounding production on the record.
Josh and company have never been afraid to get weird and go in varying artistic directions. . . I think having any expectations, is expecting too much.
I really like The Sky is Falling. It’s one of their most underrated tracks, in my opinion
Yeah that's such a good song! I wouldn't call it underrated though, never heared anyone say a bad word about it. Of course it doesn't get the same attention as the singles.
And only 1 chorus. The whole song is a build-up. That song has cost me in broken guitar strings. It's epic.
It’s a cool song, it’s just a bit too long for me
Agreed. Really fun song to play on guitar as well
That, along with God is in the Radio especially and Another Love Song are all criminally under appreciated songs off possibly the best rock and roll albums of the early 2000s.
You are criminally underrated. From the script writing to the art that we view, you always make sure what your saying and showing on screen matches what your talking about. Your in depth reviews are so eye opening and everything about your videos have a purpose and add to the overall theme and message you're trying to get across. Really great stuff man.
Gilicutti 🙏 thank you thank you thank you
i wonder how many car images your man has now
I don’t wanna talk about it 🙃
^seriously this would be an awesome video!
If you're gonna talk about ...Like Clockwork, you need to cover Lullabies too. I fully champion that album as the spiritual sequel to SftD and it needs to be looked at more then just the one front loaded Queens record
@@jager9022 personally im still on the fence on if it's front loaded or not. However, I've seen the arguments that it is with most of the noteworthy songs all being at the front. I definitely do fuck with the latter half of the album, especially "Long Slow Goodbye", but I need to really listen to "The Blood is Love" through "You Got a Killer Scene"
@James Schultz *Est.1982 again, im still on the fence if I agree or not with the consensus that it is front loaded. Like on one hand I'm not crazy for "Broken Box" or "You Got a Killer Scene", but I love "I Never Came" and "Long Slow Goodbye". It's just some view Lullabies as the front loaded queens record
I wish he'd go full radiohead on qotsa and make a video on era vulgaris too.
I love this record. Totally agreed.

I find God is on the radio to be a bit haunting aswell. I really love the song but something makes me feel a bit uneasy listening to it...
R.I.P Mark Lanegan 1964 - 2022
One of the greatest ever @ his craft
While it’s not integral to the experience, one of the coolest things about this record is the pre-gap track before Millionaire. The Real Song for the Deaf. I used to love putting this CD in and rewinding from track 1 to get to it
Fun fact about that one: it was recorded by rubbing a set of balloons on microphones. If you play it loudly enough, you can easily feel the vibrations, enough so that it really is a song, for the deaf
Dam was gonna leave that comment, guess u beat me to it
I always interpreted “Mosquito Song” as the driver being kidnapped and murdered by cannibals, but hey that’s just one dude’s opinion.
I always thought of it was about the evil tendencies of humans, basically saying that we are the greatest parasite in the world
I thought it was getting rid of them ticks and other blood sucking vermints
I mean going out past Joshua tree and 29 palms....maybe that is what happens
I thought it is either about animal cruelty (killing and eating animals quite deliberately) or about a guy who talks to his kidnapping victim that he is going to kill and eat after feeding parts of the victim to himself.
@@aneurinculver5179 vermints
RIP Mark Lanegan
FYI Dave Grohl took the 'song for the dead' drum part from Black flag's "slip it in"
Enzo DeMay to be specific, it was the snare fill leading into the full band part. Not the whole drum intro
Mosquito song is the perfect example of a song being as beautiful as it is dark. The guitar part is phenomenal and the lyrics truly sound like a “Lullaby to paralyze”. I hope that in 2022 we get a 20 year anniversary tour for this album.
Gotta say, mad props for adding in "18 A.D" at the start when you mentioned their original name.
Thank you for the song name.
loved this album instantly
...like clockwork will always hold a special place in my heart because it's the album that got me into Queens. Also the first record I ever bought, along with In Rainbows!
Two of my personal favorite records! Great album
Such a different perspective from my own on why Like Clockwork was special. . . There was a six year gap between Era Vulagris and Like Clockwork, where I desperately awaited a new record and worried if maybe that wait was indicative of Josh and the band having run out of ideas. . . The anticiaption was huge, and some of the teasers for the record were really intriguing. Even as a long time fan of the band, Like Clockwork has some of my favourite tunes. I would consider I Appear Missing one of the best songs the band ever created.
"one of the last great hard rock albums in recent memory"
it came out 18 years ago
And nothing has topped it since IMO
How many hard rock records can you name in the last 18 years?
Fantastic work. I love how the video itself mirrors the record itself through your CLEAN visuals and the constant "station"-switching. It's an honor being one of the "stations" in this video. This is a snappier and tighter version of the video I wanted to make back in 2018; but it also has the unique elements that come through how you specifically executed upon it. Killer video as always.
One of my favorite albums of all time, this is a genius record and this is a great video covering it
"Marc Lanagan's grunge-inspired rasp" He inspired grunge more than grunge inspired him
I have always felt Rated R, Songs for the Deaf, and Lullabies to Paralyze were connected in a 3 part story. Rated R is partying and drugs, Songs for the Deaf is the dude leaving the party and going for a drive, Lullabies is about him coming to realizations and relationships.
Dang, I wish I could like the video twice, so much info and trivia that I would never have guessed, makes me look at queens of stone age with another eye
I almost died in my car, while listening to Songs for the deaf. Was very eye opening
That subconscious need to squeeze the gas pedal a little harder is real, right?
I love this album! Right when I think I got sick of it and stop listening it for a week, I always comeback and give it another listen. ..also a request. Please do more King Gizzard videos!! I love them too
Usually my favorite is the self-titled record. But, when I'm driving a long distance, Songs for the Deaf is perfect.
My favorite album. Ever.
loved the Polyphonic nod at the beginning, haha. Great video as always!!
You know _Songs for The Deaf_ has two hidden tracks, yeah? It's before the first song. I found it when ripping the CD in EAC. Unfortunately my drive can't read that hidden track.
If you have a good subwoofer with the crossover set right, Deaf people actually CAN hear/feel the song.
Songs for the Deaf only has one hidden track - Mosquito Song isn't hidden - it's a bonus song that's homely called a hidden track.
Favorite band and album while in high school in Spain. I was even lucky enough to do an exchange when I was 16 in California and my host father loved the band as well, 2000s what a decade.
Queens of the Stone Age are such a good band. It's difficult to pick a favorite album due to each one having it's own great stuff.
Impossible for me, I like everything Josh do. He's a genius!
Great band
First It Giveth is easily my favorite Queens track
Songs for the Deaf doesn't sound like it is nearly 20 years old. It has held up well and maybe become even more loved as time has passed.
My favorite QOTSA album is Songs for the Deaf, but my favorite song is Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret.
Great tune for sure. I'd go with better living through chemistry as mine, definitely in my top 5
Just don't go telling people that... 🤭
My favorite Queens song as well, which is why Rated R gets the favorite record rating on GP. I just find it maddening that no one ever seems to truly dissect the meaning behind Lost Art despite their love for it. I mean, is it just me, or is that song unquestionably about a sexual encounter with a transgender person? I've tried to interpret it in other ways but the aforementioned explanation when taking the lyrics into account is the only one that has fully ever made sense to me. (Add to that, Josh has been known to say the song is about anal sex before live performances). Please tell me what your take is (or has always been) on Lost Art.
@@jovanreid6782 I never really put that much thought into the lyrics. I went and read them just refresh my memories and to me it could be about many things. The true magic of music is that no matter what the writer may have intended the meaning can be different for anyone and even change over time. For me originally the song was about a forbidden love. Reading it now it could be about that...most likely, or about hiding an embarrassing fetish but ultimately I think it's about trying to keep a secret you'd hurt someone for revealing.
@@fladification Thanks for your feedback. I find most Queens fans tend to not put too much thought into the lyrics, and I also agree that the beauty of the music is that it's open to various interpretations. I just find with this particular song that it's almost astounding that more listeners haven't come to the same conclusion that I've come to, or that it's never so much as alluded to given how obvious it seems to be. Lines like, "you've got something, I understand, hold it in tightly, call on command" and "look for reflections, in your face, canine devotion, time can't erase", and "stuck in believe, there is a lie, promise is promise, an eye for an eye, we've got something, to reveal, no one can know, how we feel". To me, those are all dead giveaways, even before you get to the fact that Josh has prefaced live performances of this song by stating it's about anal sex. To me, what he's essentially saying in the lyrics is that he met someone that he had no idea was a biological male, and felt a strong attraction to this person all the while, but then started to hear things in the streets, hence the line "out on the corner, or locked in your room, I never believe them, and I never assume"- I always see that particular line as Josh's way of saying he has become aware of the general consensus about this person he's been seeing, but due to both denial and his refusal to just believe anything he hears, he doesn't come to any conclusions (and also because he is already emotionally invested in this person, hence the lyric "canine devotion time can't erase" I feel like what he's saying there is he's already into this person and there's already a physical attraction as well as an emotional attachment, so he's kind of decided even if it turns out to be true that this woman is actually a transgender woman, he's already in too deep and there's pretty much no turning back. Then the ultimate give away, "we've got something to reveal, no one can know how we feel". To me the "something to reveal" is the biological male genitalia surely to be revealed when they finally get down to the nitty gritty, and when Josh says "no one can know how we feel" he has to be saying that although he's decided to go through with this, it's absolutely imperative that no one ever knows about it if for no other reasons than that he is not prepared for the stigma attached to this type of sexual practice, as well as he has yet to reconcile this experience with his personal identity. Given all of this, I just don't see what else Lost Art could possibly be about.
Oh and also have you ever watched the video. The surgery images only seems to further underscore my theory. Looks to me like a biological male by the end of the video is post-OP.
This is like a modern internet ' Headbangers Ball ' or something !! So rad !! You should do Era Vulgaris next !
This album is a work of art
In the Fade is probably my favorite QOTSA song, but this is my favorite album of theirs. I grew up with it, and each songs holds a place in my memories. All their albums are absolutely fantastic though, there’s just so much to love.
This would be a really cool idea for a quest mod in New Vegas tbh. You gotta use your radio to follow various station signals, each one leading to a song and combat encounter, or something else.
I watched this video a long time ago, and recently came back to it. I cannot figure out what car is used throughout the video, but ever since watching it over a year ago it’s become a symbol of this album for me.
So early that this video isn’t even on most recent videos
Great album.. one time I was in a running competition where I listen to the whole album while running.. which was cool at that time I really like to make my own music videos up my head with characters from tv especially cartoons like Kim Possible and such so I made a whole music video up in my head with Kim as Josh Hommer and Ron as the bass player .. or some kind of swift some place .. it is was pretty fun.. the run was raining but still a good time..
Oh wow glad I'm not the only one who does this lmao. The making music videos thing not the running thing lol.
This is one of my favorite albums ever and I can tell a lot of care went into making this. Great job adapting the art style and feel of the album in the animation!
Can we take a moment to appreciate the quality of the animation
Yall gotta love the hidden intro track called the real song for the deaf. I heard people who are deaf can actually feel the bass on that one if someone has a good speakers system
Editing on this video is fantastic. Might also help that its one of my favorite albums of all time.

4:07 God damn it, this frame could be an album cover in itself. It's beautiful. The colors, the yellow 'Cuda and its antenna splitting "one" and "knows" perfectly in the middle, the waveform in the back. I am in love.
I was obsessed with this album when I was 11, played on repeat while I played Jak X Racing hahaha
I discovered this album while riding my motorcycle- and yes- it´s a song for the road.
Millionaire is among my favorite songs of all time, for the first ten seconds alone. The rest of the song is good too, but goddamn what a way to start an album.
This albums definitely in my top 5. At one point or another every song on it was my favorite track on the album and that speaks so much for the depth of it. Love your videos man. You've covered so many albums that would be in my top albums of all time.
Not to be “that guy”, but there are actually other instruments on the album. There are strings on No One Knows, and piano on Go With The Flow, for example.
and synths and organs and shit in Song for Dead and scattered about in other songs, but I bet his reason for leaving those out are because they’re not focused on like in Villains or Clockwork. (Or it was simply a flub-up Lol)
Dude, Dave Ghrol was singing and chanting into a gourd or a vase or something on this album.
Qotsa is great about variation and layering of instrumentation, it's one of the reasons I love them so much
And a friggin' accordion for Chrissakes on Mosquito Song, played by the late great Natasha Schnieder.
I was quite a bit surprised that Troy isn't even mentioned. SFTD was his initiation into the band, where he's remained nearly 20 years.
@@D-Fens_1632 Yeah but he didn't play on the album. He joined only after QOTSA went on tour in support of SFTD.
I have this album cover tattood and I can’t believe it’s taken 20 years to learn all this
always threw this on during road trips through the desert as a kid at it just fit like a glove, now whenever i take a long drive it only feels right
I've always really enjoyed this album, but it was really cool seeing it explained in this context. Excellent video!
This album hits different, changed my life for the best and gave me strenght to push through tough times, made me love myself and everyone around me more. I regret nothing on having the iconic cover art forever engraved in my skin, reminder of hardships already conquered and those yet to come.
This is...extremely well edited. I'm seriously impressed! You managed to bring the energy of the album with it. You definitely got a sub!
This video is the best I’ve watched in a long time! Nice job, man. This album is one of my favorites. Gotta play it right now!
Probably one of the best videos ive watched covering this album
Brilliant production! one of my fav albums, cranking it on my road trip tomorrow.
Got into the band earlier this year. I grew up loving all kinds of rock music, but my attention to the genre shifted due to the mainstream climate.
This album reminded me why i fell ik love with this genre as a kid.

One of my favourite albums of all time
This album is easily cemented in my Top 10 albums of all-time. Being a big Queens and Nirvana fan, Song For The Dead was always my favorite track, tearing up the kit is exactly what Dave did, what an epic song.
This album is one of, if not my favorite of all time! Just after Christmas I was able to score a copy on vinyl, and I'm so glad I did! One of my favorite memories with this album is the first time I heard it front to back: my dad and I were going up into the mountains to look for a Christmas tree and we played this in the truck on our way up there, jamming out the whole time.
The best album of the 2000's.
My favorite album from my favorite band. Perfectly analyzed!
I never knew the story of the album and this has covered it so perfectly. So thank you
Awesome video! Been listening to this album since middle school, and they just keep getting better. 🙌
Picking a favorite QOTSA album is too hard for me.
I heard this album so many times and even do today from time to time. Got shivers with the music and your commentary. Great analysis and video!
Loved the graphics too!
Your videos improve with every upload and that’s impressive to say the least. This from start to finish was absolutely mesmerizing. The way the visuals transitioned with the music, the colour scheme, narration and pace of the video is just so captivating and down right wicked. It helps that QOTSA is my favourite band, but paving the initial strip of what I hope is a saga (WHATS THE SAGA) of queens videos with this jam packed juicy video has left me wanting an entire desert road of content to cruise through. Well done on this and I seriously hope to see more videos about QOTSA. Maybe a Crooked vultures interlude as well?
I am so happy you exist. Bands and music essays deserve someone as passionate and skilled as you.
Please,oh, please make a video on the ...Like clockwork album. It is such a masterpiece! Also thank you into delving into QOTSA, they and for that matter all Homme's projects are one of the few true rock and rollers. Modern yet based so much in all that is the rock and roll genres! Again awesome video !
