Josh Homme is super underrated. He plays and sings that song just as tight live, not easy to do at all
Super. Superfluous. Superb.
Super hyperbolic language!
He is anything but underrated. If you mean he's not as big as the garbage pop stars of today then you are right but thats the world of music now. They who know what's up know. Best live band ive seen, up there with Radiohead.
Everything he touches turns to gold
Underrated is such an overused word
The original upload of this video got blocked after 5 minutes. Fingers crossed!! FYI, the Led Zeppelin WMTSG has also been put back up! The only one of the series that is still missing is Fleetwood Mac.
The episode 20 had me confused. lol
I have been obsessed with the tones and production of this album for many, many moons. I actually bought a '71 VT combo, had to sell it because it was a money pit, and the wrong year. The white switch 76 is the one you want kids. Eventually got the tone I was chasing with a Catlinbread SFT MkII and various EQ & boost pedals. I can pre amp that into IR loaders now and go crazy with it. It's a very rude & gnarly distortion that I had to have after hearing "Tension Head" on Rated R. Very Black Flag-ish.
Thank you for this video Rick!!!
BTW That Danno looks boss AF!
Love the channel!
Cheers!!
Thanks. I didn't get to hear this episode yet. Let's hear what makes "Possum Kingdom" (Toadies) so great?
So glad these are back, Rick! Ride, ride my see-saw! Take my place, on this trip it's for free!
This channel is amazing Rick. What's the chance of getting some Porcupine Tree? Maybe Watchmaker or Sound of Muzak?
The subtle orchestral part during the guitar solo has that Beatlesque vibe to it. It's the coolest thing.
I thought the same thing! “What does this orchestral part remind me of?…. A Day in the Life!”
Man that part is lovely
@@princessdaaahlingamor5798 i feel exactly the same, i could hear the piano in quarters after the crescendo. Almost made me wonder if it might be a deliberate reference for the involved listeners.
A harmonic minor polka in C standard rolled into a hit pop song. An amazing feat.
Honestly, the bass solo at the bridge is my favorite part. Grohl's fills are insane, no one could ever deny that, but I would argue that short bass solo, simple as it is, is the most iconic part of this song and really makes it what it is 👌
nick Oliveri is a bad ass bass player..he's a straight killer...my favorite part too
Purposely leave the volume down a tad during this song so I can crank it during that bass solo.
That bass tone is so tasty I wish I could bottle it - it's like liquid gold. MAN! Genius producer, and there aren't enough superlatives to describe Dave Grohl. Supernatural. Masterpiece song, I'm glad younger people are getting a load of it. 🔥💥🤘😝🤘💥🔥
What Makes This Song Great? No One Knows.
Rim shot! Lol!
Now we know.
Rick knows.
He should have said that and just stopped the video there 😆
lame 😹😹
Incredible analysis. I’ll never hear the solo the same after hearing the orchestral mix isolated. Gives me goosebumps even 20 years after release
That whole album is incredible.
Almost twenty years of this song and still sounds amazing
This has got to be one of the craziest songs ever written. There's so much going on, it has about a dozen hooks.
i never noticed how crazy the chorus bass was
Theres also major Polka vibes on the song. If you search up a piano cover someone did, its even more apparant
Makes sense since Josh has said that his original guitar lessons were in polka.
That orchestra under the solo is so cool! Can't believe I never noticed!! :D
This orquestra is really great! and the arrangement is so badass as well!
It's one of their favorite tricks. I loved that it made its way back on the last record, too.
I always noticed the crescendoing strings but never noticed the brass. Really cool.
A little nod to A Day In The Life by The Beatles, I guess
I can't believe that everyone is acting like they can't hear it. I've been hearing it from the first time I listened
You should do I Appear Missing. Simply a masterpiece on it's own.
Kyron Klain True it's an unbelievable track
Kyron Klain that’s my favorite song of all time
The greatest song history will ever know
The like clockwork album is criminally underrated as a whole. It almost requires to be listened to in its entirety.
The Lonely Traveller My God is the Sun live is phenomenal as well
I blinked and this song is 18 years old!
No joke! I remember waiting for this album to come out and then being so stoked to finally listen to it on a road trip right after I got it.
so crazy
I'm stunned by how many of my young friends are HUGE Nirvana fans.....only to find out NONE WERE ALIVE when Nirvana was!!!!
I play in a QOTSA tribute band and if there were insights like that for every song we try to play it would be absolutely fantastic. Really cool video, full of knowledge and passion. Thank you Rick
God damn Homme’s vocals on this are incredible. Such an amazing progression from his role as a teenage guitarist in Kyuss. They grew into their voice phenomenally.
And then out the other side again.
He oversings horribly these days

Me: clicks that thumbs up
Damn fine track.
this is easily one of the best songs of the 2000's
Rick, if you want a better understanding of Josh Homme and his guitar sound take a look at his history as a guitar player. I grew up with him in the Palm Springs, Ca area in the early 90s where he helped develop the “Desert Rock” sound. Bands that emerged from this scene were Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Eagles of Death Metal and Brant Bjork to name a few. The sound in general relied heavily on the drone sound of distorted drop c tuned guitars. Josh regularly used an Ampeg amp and cabinet with an Ovation Ultra GP to get his sound starting with Kyuss. Look into the Desert Rock scene in Palm Desert, Ca in the early 90’s.
i thought bjork was from iceland?
@@cleesely I mean, that is pretty funny, but they are diffent Bjorks, you know 😁😁
@@tijolinhosensual Yes, there was a famous tennis player who was also Bjorn a Bjork :-)
I mean...Josh Homme was IN Kyuss and Eagles of Death Metal but I totally get your point. I particularly enjoy the more rough cut, earlier Desert Sessions stuff where you get a feel for the jam/process of pulling some of his stuff together.
The man is a perennial collaborator and that's likely part of the reason he is constantly learning/evolving.
@@EarthlinkRecords7 I see what you did there...
I love it when people find things on master tapes that end up almost inaudible in the final mix. He's right, that orchestral bit in the lead break is very cool. Familiar, but strangely like hearing it for the first time. I must have heard this tune a thousand times, but never really noticed that bit, in all the chaos of that section. I'll hear it every time now, bringing together that which, mentally, is easy to lose the thread of. Now, it has a context. Thanks Mr Beato!
That orchestral climb that fell to the bass instantly reminded me of the Beatles, “A Day In The Life
also a little Looney Tunes soundtrack elements
Damn this dude knows his stuff about music, dope video
Sometimes I think Rick knows too much about music.
Here is a place i didn't expect to see you lad
yeah he fawks.
The song blows. It's annoying. With all the hype that preceded this band's coming, I truly expected something much better. And that fuzz! Alahhhhhhhh!! I almost pierced my eardrums with roofing nails. Sorry if I offended anyone but........ I'm not really sorry. Sorry.
You got good taste in music jack
This is a song that never left my playlist for the last 18 years, what a masterpiece! Thank you!!!
No artists/music industry pricks should ever block your videos Rick. They should thank you for promoting their music. Keep it up you are awesome. How about some REM? Ron
you say that as though record label executives have human emotions.
Oh yeah...REM please...
@@zhou_sei Good point.

@@maluorno Or Driver 8 perhaps?
This band gets overlooked. This is a great album. I have a request: “Song for the dead.” It’s a beast.
They set the bar very high with this tune. A masterpiece.
God. This not only made me want to play guitar as much as I used to, that hidden brass section during the solo/orchestral swell made me want to start playing the French horn again.
I've always enjoyed how 'squelchy' the track sounds - like walking through a marsh
This song is a masterpiece. What guitar player plays a solo like that? Josh Homme - accidental genius. Thanks for doing this. Love QOTSA.
@@metalheadblues did seem a but backhanded haha
I subliminally always heard that orchestral part but to hear that isolated is just incredible. This is my favorite Queen’s song too. Great vid Rick! I know this was awhile ago but I’m just checking it out. As usual, just profoundly amazing job! 🤘
Rick, I don't know much of the music theory that you talk about in these videos but your enthusiasm and enjoyment at talking about the songs just make me so happy!
Is Rick finally getting the respect he deserves...where the blockers realize that the breakdown of their songs just brings more fans...new or old?
Well its robots doing the blocking, so unless the matrix had a change of heart, I don’t think Don Hen*** knows of these great videos XD
@@TheWallBeyond per request of the legal teams...
you don't get blocked they just monetized for the label. not many labels have their acts blocked
@@cleesely some of his videos have been taken down, not just demonetized.
One of the most incredible things about this song is that last lick in the solo. I'm pretty sure Josh is playing a crazy 'double-slide' thing that I've never seen anyone do before. Pretty sure it's 14\12 on the high C, into 12/15\12 on the G finishing on 12 on the Eb. That quick transition between the two slides, finishing with the stop makes for some tricky fingering. Give it a go.

I can't believe that this song is 20 years old now... or that I'm going to be 47 later this year. Still holds up. Great effort by everyone involved. Some of my favorite Dave drumming.
Always liked that song, but now I appreciate it.
I think "I Sat By The Ocean" would be a fantastic song to breakdown. Pretty much anything off of Like Clockwork.
That orchestra behind the solo reminds me of the Beatles “ A Day in the Life “ where it goes crazy and then stops an Paul starts to sing “ Woke up , Fell out of bed , Dragged a comb across my head “ part 👍🏻
Douglas Mijangos Yes! You’re right, it’s so similar. Very cool.
Agreed
I find most of the song has a Beatles' sound to it. Take away some of the distortion in the riff (as well as Dave's insane drumming).
You mean it reminds you of scales and apprig. Beatles didn’t invent musicial scales
@@jamiehovis7722 yes I know they didn’t invent musical scales but they inspired a lot of people so a lot of musical techniques and musical stuff the Beatles did maybe without even knowing it inspired people to be more musical…
Dude the Orchestra in the background sounds like the score for the Batman cartoon in the 90's. I love it.
It's weird finding a channel with so many subscribers yet I've somehow never heard of it. Excited to check out the rest of the series.
Really glad you've covered Qotsa and Tool Rick, I never noticed it was an orchestra playing that, thought it was an electronic effect. Great work as always.
When I heard this for the first time it blew me away and it still does .. crank it.
i realised how catchy the melody really is when I went to see them live and everyone started to sing along (including me to my surprise) when the song started. Ta talala ta talala
Honestly this is my absolute favorite song and my personal opinion is it is also the best ever done. So I have heard it and played it literally thousands of times. Not kidding. Still you have managed to point out some things I have never noticed which is incredible to me and kind of pisses me off. So thanks a lot, this was awesome.
Clean and crisp but fuzzy and grungey at the same time! And Josh's chord sequences are so uniquely Josh. Love him!
6:16 wow that chord reminds me of "El Rodeo" from Kyuss
Your passion for music is inspiring. Reminds me of why I went to music college in the first place. Thank you for all of your hard work making these videos, Rick.
Those piano renditions. Wow. Sounds like some Baroque tragedy composition. It's amazing.
I had the same feeling. Sounds awesome and hauting.
If you don't know already, there is an entire CD out with a classical orchestra doing qotsa songs on their instruments. It is amazing. One of the reasons that this is possible, and sounds good, is that all qotsa songs a first played and written for acoustic instruments. then all the fuzz, electricity and gravel is thrown in.
Iam Notevenanumber It’s fantastic isn’t it?
I wasn’t aware of the QOTSA classical cd. I’ll definitely be checking that out!
Hey alright, it’s Kip Casper. Clone Radio: LA’s infinite repeat. How we feelin’ out there? How’s your drive time commute?
I need a saga. What’s the saga? It’s Songs for the Deaf. You can’t even hear it!
Laughed so hard. This album is minty.
Love how this album was mixed like you are listening to a southern US rock radio station from your car. Brilliant
Thanks, Rick. I’ve always found this song to be a bit baroque- isolating those orchestral sections really helped me understand where that comes from. Love this series!
For all of Rick's excellent analysis, the highlight here for me is totally the drums and bass at 14:10. Holy crap does that rock hearing those two isolated together.
Rick - The very last beat on the Tremolo Glissando has always sounded to me like the same damn thing as The Beatles "A Day in the Life" just at the instant it turns to Paul's part ... "woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head". THESE guys HAD to know that when they recorded this song. Not spanking them for it, quite the reverse ... it is well used in this track. I love it.
For all the attention this tune gets, I've never seen a more killer breakdown of it! All the isolated elements are incredible to hear, mind blowing perspective.
I still remember the first time I heard this. I didn’t know the band or who the drummer was but I knew this was something special. I immediately went to the record store the next day to grab the album and to no surprise at all I found Dave was the drummer. This quickly became one of my favorite records and holds a special place in my heart.
I think a track from Them Crooked Vultures deserves some appreciation and analysis.
I'd love to see elephants or scumbag blues
@@XtremeKillah101 so much to talk about with any of the songs, really. Love the keyboard during the chorus of Scumbag Blues, so cool.
Scumbag blues indeed! Sneaky Led Zepp bits in it from the bassists ancient past.
This guy is unreal. Ho hum, pick right up in the middle, easy peasy, oh this part is G major. There is a reason they are called Professional Musicians. Amazing and totally awesome! And QOTSA rocks.
QOTSA Austin City Limits 2013 in the rain..."Heaven Smiles Above Me"...will never be the same
When the developers for the game Guitar Hero covered No One Knows for the song list, the musician said he broke several strings trying to play the song.
I would like to hear your opinion of The Bronze, You Can't Quit Me Baby, and Mexicola.
I want to see if anyone besides Homme can play the solo on The Bronze. It is incredibly tough.
3 of my favorite ever songs until now by qotsa
man...what a trio of songs...jesus
@@jager9022 oh yeah Misfit Love, that 2nd verse bridge before the first instrumental passage... They do so much in their music it requires more than several listens... Not to mention Crooked Vultures...
@@Desmigalhation I was about to say those were my favorite from the album, but then a better question is what song I don't like (maybe These aren't the Droids you're looking for)
You didn't mention those sweet sweet Radiohead "The Bends"-style backing vocals!
Oh wow, that was heavenly. Thank you Rick Beato. No one knows why you do this wonderful thing for us. Glory be.
One of my favorite songs of all time
16:53 I love that bass fill so much, so groovy
I may as well chime in again for Shadow of the Season for WMTSG. Lanegan and crew deserve a nod. Thanks, Rick!
Dave really slaps drums with intention even back in nirvana. Great band. Big fan. The lost art of keeping a secret and I appear missing. Definitely tops
Go back further than that. He was a machine in Scream.
(9:05) I've been waiting forever for someone to bring up the second guitar part that decends the harmonic minor scale on the third time through the chorus, i guess I'll have to settle for just a mention. 🥲
I believe the octave notes being played are Eb-D-C-B-C-B-Ab-F- leading to the strumming on the V (G maj)
I learn so much from watching his videos. Just fantastic
I adore this tune from first I heard it. Never gets boring
That riff is indeed outstanding and who is Rick to not reveal us some secrets 'bout this track. Rick's continuous RUclips production rate is so high that even the best students can't hold up with him. Deep respect for his devotion.
Songs for the Deaf was one of the last great full albums, front to back, amazing songs. They just don't make rock like this anymore. You're lucky to get 2 good songs off an album.
Oh wow this is one of my favourite songs, I didn't know you did a video on this.

Rick Beato: plays Oliveri’s bass line
Me: LIFE IS LIKE A HURRICANE HERE IN DUCKBERG
The short orchestral part is what takes this song to the next level! It’s too epic for it’s own good!
Songs For The Deaf is a clever masterpiece. First It Giveth always hits the spot.
Great breakdown of an amazing song.
Queens of the Stone Age is a band that really kicks you right in the head
The bridge interlude (14:50) is such a Kyuss riff.
And the energy on drums...
I play guitar myself and I have gr8 appreciation and respect for this guy!.. knows his stuff...well done my friend!
it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on sonic youth
Ricardo Sinatra yes!,,,
An episode on pretty much any song from daydream nation would be amazing!!!!!
Ricardo Sinatra sonic youth SUGAR KANE! Awesome song! 100% 😃
One of the great songs. Hearing it like this, I had no idea it was so complex! I'm hearing bits I hadn't noticed before!
This song blows my mind! I’m surprised that the backing vocal track wasn’t mentioned. A very distinctive element and one that I found most enjoyable. I love doing this song at karaoke night! It’s a crowd pleaser.
What about the backing vocal harmony at the vocal line leading to the pause before no one knows (and tastes like gold, etc.)
Also the whispered line behind the beginning / for example, “we get these rules to follow”, etc. Or am I just hearing stuff? Lol
Rick's gleeful smile at the end shows great appreciation for the QOTSA.
That's great to see when many producers appear jaded after a short career but Rick still has the passion for music.
Long live Rick Beato!
Best song, this song really blew my teenage mind 👏 👏👏👏
Im sure someone has asked this before but where do you find the individual tracks for these songs. Really cool hearing the tracks solo'd up. Thanks.
Please do one on Kyuss

I remember hearing this for the first time while driving in my car,and the first thing that blew me away was the intensity of the drums. I did`nt know it was Dave Grohl at the time... i just knew the drummer was great!!!
This literally reminded me of this band which I haven’t heard since it came out. I’ve since listened to it at least 100 times. Thank you.
What about Kyuss? Supa Scoopa?
Excellent! Now their best song: Song For The Dead.

All my yes.
Whenever I watch one of these, I go back and just listen to the song. It opens up so much that I knew was cool, but never knew why. Thanks for you insights Rick!
To think this song is now 20 yrs. old. This song is classic now and was back then too.
Well, at least that explains where that unexplainable aspect of the end of the guitar solo I couldn’t put my finger on what it was that gave the last few notes that “oomph”... very cool. When bands take advantage of what is possible in a studio setting to make a song just that much more unique, it really does give me goosebumps..
Hey Rick, when are we gonna get some old school classic Megadeth?
paolobernardini Holy Wars...The Punishment Due? Hangar 18? Those would be my choices.
This would be awesome. Out of the Big 4, Megadeth is my favorite.
Yawn.
That would be so awesome, upvote this so rick sees
Tornado of souls
What a great breakdown, particularly the orchestral swell. Duplicating this for live performance on a single keyboard was quite a challenge, especially when I discovered that the portamento setting of the "tremolo strings" patch was disabled (perhaps Roland thinks that orchestras don't need it?). I was able to get a close approximation by mapping the low brass in the bottom half of the keyboard, the middle two octaves up from C4 as the tremolo strings and a massive orchestra hit at C1, but pitch-shifted down one octave. The key to overcoming the lack of portamento was to simply walk up the chromatic scale using quarter notes with increasing volume (Obviously, a velocity-sensing keyboard is a requirement here), then resolve it all on the massive hit from the orchestra. Much fun! Thanks Rick!
