INFO: A Perfect Circle is a rock band that was founded back in 1999 and is known for being a super group made up by rock artists that had already made success with previous bands. Some of the early members included vocalist Maynard James Keenan from Tool, guitarist Troy Van Leween who had worked with bands like Orgy and Korn, and drummer Tim Alexander who’s best known for his work with Primus. But the founding father of this band is Billy Howerdel.
He’s worked as a guitar tech for the likes of David Bowie, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and Tool. And A Perfect Circle was his opportunity to finally take the stage himself. But with a strong musical figure like Maynard by his side, there certainly were opposing arguments during recording sessions. In this video we’re gonna
find out what inspired these guys to create the sound of A Perfect Circle?
What artist/band should be next? 🤘🎧
johnny rotten
I'd be interested in hearing an essay on Slint or Battles.
Opeth or Porcupine Tree!
Julian Casablancas/ the strokes
You gotta do Sufjan man
I still, 20 years later, get shivers down my spine whenever I hear the opening notes to "The Hallow." I listen to Mer de Noms in it's entirety almost weekly. It's arguably the greatest record ever produced.
Fun fact that was excluded... Billy mastered it in his garage, not some fancy studio. The dude is a savant and goes under appreciated. Maynard is, of course, a lyrical genius and his lyrics connect with me on a deeply personal level. So glad those two men met!
The hollow but the remix is my favourite. I love APC a lot but that one was the first song of theirs I heard and it blew my mind
I feel the same way about that album. They was supposed to only demos but Billy did so good they ended up on the album.
I had the joy of seeing APC before they released an album, when they were opening for NIN in maybe 1999 (?). We drove down to NC from VA to see NIN and when we saw APC we were like who is this?
Maynard's words are very wise.
Truly an individual who has touched the divine.
This isn't to say he's anything other than a normal man.
But he is most certainly a reliable arrow to the unspeakable in which our species is drawn to for meaning and understanding. And to me that's absolutely beautiful and makes everything he does from all three of his bands to his wine and food company all the more respectable and inspirational.
Thirtheenth step is probably my all-time favorite album
Cool. It's not one of my all-time favs. But it certainly is my favorite by the band.
I was working at blockbuster back in my San Diego days. My cool boss let me play the new thirteenth steps over the speakers in the store. An older lady customer told us to turn it off or down. Thx for leaving a life story for me perfect circle
Really? Great album, but I tend to prefer Mer de Noms. Curious how you feel about the latest?
Thirtheenth Step is my favorite APC album and is in my top five favorite albums of all time.
It’s such a great fucking record man
Great video. I am loving “Eat The Elephant” but Mer De Noms will forever be my favorite!
Loved your gold digger video xD And Mer De Noms is great, but 13th Step is my fav.
Thanks for commenting man.
Man, I can’t get into their latest. The summer Mer de Noms came out that’s all I listened to.
Eat the elephant is trash. We need angry Maynard again
13th step is my personal favorite just because of the subject matter. Super relatable.
@@MikeMtgFightClub it has its moments, but it's not a good starting point for the band. Mer De Noms is the ideal starting point.
Mer de noms was and is still an incredibly beautiful album . A stunning achievement. I saw APC open for NIN years ago. Beautiful show. Wish I could relive that night.
One of my favorite APC songs is Passive from the Emotive album. It was one of those songs that helped me through a pretty rough period I experienced.
I'm glad if offered you some sort of support. I feel that way with a lot of music.
But APC certainly had its unique moments in my life too.
@erik r Pet
Listen to the original live version. The song is actually called Vacant.
Are you a fan of Nine Inch Nails, by any chance?
As someone mentioned "passive" being "vacant "... if I recall correctly, the song originated from Tapeworm? Reznor and MJK project that never got off the ground or released rather
Best band ever: TooL
Second best band: Puscifer
Third best band: A Perfect Circle.
Damn you Maynard...
Good one. Personally i like some of puscifer's songs, but i just can't take a full album by them. Too much stuff going on at once.
Indeed.
@@LieLikesMusic shhhh. That is heresy......
Whaaat Puscifer is ass compared to tool and a perfect circle
@@kaylakoechig7906 if that's your way of thinking then yes. But the fact that they are all individual and each one is their own I don't see how ppl can compare each one to the other.
No mention of Josh Freese or Paz Lenchantin? Really?
Right? JF was on a tear at that time- drumming for everyone
what about James Iha?
I love APC because the instrumentals are unreal and crazy unique by themselves and then to have Maynard infuse his own puzzle into them is just perfect. Also, it may pertain to current events, but the lyrics are written in a way that they will be timeless.
I love the way you put it my friend. Yes both the music and the lyrics are really good for both their first
studio albums. I'm not too sure yet with their last record.
Thanks. Give it some time and I think you'll appreciate it as much as the older ones. It's been 14 years since the last album so you have to expect some differences. I'm surprised at how they've keep their sound, however. The same style of guitar and bass sounds exist in all the albums. It seems like many are forming opinions before they fully absorb the album. People aren't noticing the subtle parts of each song and just tossing the entire album aside at face value. MJK treats each song like a puzzle he needs to solve. And I think part of that is creating a puzzle that WE need to solve. And some people are not solving these puzzles before spewing their opinions all over the place. Like everyone seems to think "So long, and thanks for all the fish" is just an innocent tribute to great entertainers, but the song is more than that. Another reason people aren't diving deep enough is people think it's all political, but there is just so much density packed into everything he's saying in each song that some people just can't seem to grasp. And a lot of that is intentional on MJK's part. He wants people to get upset at the shock value of a song, how different it sounds, because he wants them to open their mind to new concepts. Also, the notion that softer music is equal to poppier music is frankly absurd. The music has all retained it's "eerieness" from the older albums while carving it's own niche. Mer de noms was a raw, more intimate affair dealing with some heavy ideas. The Thirteenth step was more focused, vaguely focusing on the steps to recovering from addiction, while keeping each song unique and varied. Thirteenth step is noticeably softer, but I think it's a better album. Eat the elephant is softer yet, while still retaining all of their best musical qualities while heavily experimenting. It's definitely an "APC" record and I applaud them for being able to jump right back into their natural progression as a band instead of crooning for the older years as some bands tend to do, creating records that sound uninspired and grossly like the old ones. Sorry for the rant, I'm just worried that people are feeling the shock value of the album and not letting it sink in enough. I would've been happier if some of the songs were heavier but It's definitely a top-tier APC offering for me.
Passive was a reworked 'Tapeworm Project' that Maynard was in with Trent Reznor. The original song was called 'Vacant'.
Hnm, thanks for adding that. Too bad the Tapeworm project never became a thing. Think their voices
would complement each other.
As widely known Potions from Pucifer is from Tapeworm as well.
I bet Maynard tells this to his kid when he gets water at 3 in the morning:
Lil' Maynard: (turns on the sink)
Maynard: GO BACK TO SLEEP!
Lil' Maynard: k
unfunny
FUNNY
😬
WHY DID I FIND THIS FUNNY
Mer de Noms, silent 's'. It's French, Sea of Names.
Also a French curse words
Understanding Soundgarden/Chris Cornell would be awesome :)
Maynard has said Failure is a huge inspiration. That's his favorite band.
Really? Can i get the source on that?
@@LieLikesMusic No it's King Crimson
Lovely video. I disagree with one point, though. I think Thirteenth Step is a heavier album than Mer de Noms, and a more straightforward record. Although there were some tracks like Vanishing, Lullaby and The Nurse Who Loved Me really heavy on ambience, I see Mer de Noms as a more experimental album, with only Judith being a straightforward hard rock song.
I think it's in the sense that Mer De Noms had more of a traditional rock focus than Thirteenth Step. More songs in the previous album had more electric guitars goin' thus giving it a heavier feel overall.
CunningCondor I completely disagree about the album being more of a traditional rock songs. Judith and The Hollow sure a straight rock songs, but then we have Rose, Magdalena, Orestes, Sleeping Beauty, Breña which have almost like a droning feel to them, they have a strong progressive feel to them. Also, songs like Thinking of You, Renholder and Over are primarily electronic songs (people seem to forget that Maynard had his industrial thing way before Puscifer with APC). That's why I see Mer de Noms as far more of an expansive and experimental album.
I mean in terms of instrumentation. Structurally, they do break the mold, and incorporate various elements. I just mean in terms of the sounds used. Mer De Noms isn't as ambient as the other albums but still a terrific album, there's no denying that.
CunningCondor oh sorry, now I understand. I'm not a musician, only a listener and wouldn't be able to disagree on stuff like that! I also do think Thirteenth Step and the new album rely way more on ambience. My favourite is still Mer de Noms, but I love all the other stuff a lot, including the new one which sounds magnificent to me.
Yeah I think I've noticed with APC, MDN is the rockinest, ETE is the airiest, and TS is right smack dab in the middle. I feel like each album will have it's own separate group who favors it the most. Emotive, while still good, is the spotty one, I admit but still.
Yo.
Paz Lenchantin was a member of A Perfect Circle- contributing either solely or some combination of strings, bass, piano, acoustic guitar, and/ or backing vocals-
On albums Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step, eMOTIVe, and Amotion.
You can easily see her in the Judith video (one of their most well known songs) playing with the band to verify lol.
She's been touring bassist for the Pixies since 2013 and is now a permanent member of the band, and has contributed to some pretty well known bands/albums (like Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf).
Also has worked with a lot of well respected underground/artsy type musicians and bands.
So a well rounded, well respected, longtime professional musician. Not to be a pain in the ass, but there aren't too many ladies in rock and metal, and even less with those accolades.
I think she deserved a mention tbh.
Thirteenth Step is my favorite album. I'm gonna need for them to keep arguing and collaborating. 😂 Pure magic. ❤
Beautiful analysis of my favorite band. Thank you.
That's my favorite album by them too. And yes i hope they keep on going.
Thanks for taking the time to write and watch.
I fell in hard love with eat the elephant, ive had thousands of play throughs with merdernoms and 13thstep so of course i am attached to them but i can fight through the nostalgia, i will look back on eat the elephant as a classic in a few years. I listened to it every day for weeks
Wow it sure sounds like you had a crush on it. That's awesome. That never really
happened to me sadly. Listened to it a couple of times and didn't give me much.
Thanks for sharing man.
how can you not mention James Iha?
Ricardo Ariceaga thanks for pointing that out I'm clicking out now
lol, also noticed that. He mentions BH working as a guitar tech for SP, but not JI, then also, Paz from the Pixies was a founding member. I guess you can't name them all, the had a fairly extensive lineup to date.
It's not like James has added anything creatively. He didn't play on the first album or Eat the elephant
Lol exactly
Trulysarcastic44 But he’s an important member, still part of the band, amazing amazing amazing guitarist, and part founder of one of the biggest and most influential bands of the 90s.
My favorite song from them is “So long, and Thanks for all the Fish”
Nice video. It'd be cool to see and Understanding King Crimson, Rage Against The Machine, Anderson Paak, or even Tesseract since they also released an album on Friday
Joseph Bastidas Thanks! You've got some good picks there. I really want to get into Tesseract. What album would you recommend by them?
Lie Likes Music I'd recommend Altered State, their 2nd album. It's their best imo and a good intro to them, especially for listeners who aren't too crazy about screaming in metal. They're absent here, but used sparsely in their other albums
Definitely Altered State! They were at their best with Ashe
King Solomon Sadly their only release w/ Ashe 😕 but it's been great having Dan back too
Yeah, to me all the Tesseract albums are great I'm subbing cause I want to see that Understanding Tesseract video XD
Just wanted to point something out quickly. Tim Alexander was only the drummer for 1 song on Mer De Noms, that song being The Hollow which is track 1. Josh Freese was the drummer for the rest of the album and is widely considered to be the official drummer for the group before departing. He is even featured in the video for the first single off Mer De Nom which was Judith. Cheers
I get a lot of people saying this. Thanks for adding it here. I start to see that he was a lot more to the
group than what i initially thought.
@@LieLikesMusic
Josh Freese was also a touring drummer for NIN too, especially around the time when With Teeth came out.
Unsurprisingly, Dave Grohl did 7 tracks for With Teeth, and Josh played all tracks during the tour.
With that, Josh now plays drums for Foo Fighters.
It’s crazy how some of my favorite artists are in their own circle. Maynard, Reznor, Homme, Grohl, etc. 😂
Dig any deeper you’ll tie them all together in one way or another. 🙏🏼
Josh came back to apc in 2024
The new album is amazing! I’m glad the music went in this direction. As a metal fan I like to mix it up and just listen to the layers of a softer sound. Plus the vocals are beautiful and inspiring.
I'm glad you enjoy it that much. I personally don't like it that much. But maybe i'll come to like it more with time.
@@LieLikesMusic agree with you ....13th step or Emotive is as soft as A Perfect Circle should really go unless they are doing a ballad say like fade to black is to Metallica fans
This made me want to go listen to Pornography. It's such a great album.
A perfect circle is one of those bands that once you listen to it you have to be in a certain state of mind. Some of the music is brilliant once you give it a chance.
I'm so impressed that you were able to get this video out so soon after the album dropped! You should definitely make one of these types of videos when/if the new tool album ever comes out
Hahah i actually had this sitting for a while. So i could've dropped it on the day the album was released.
But i decided to make some additional changes. And yes, i'll definitely cover Tool when they release
their album.
This aged beautifully
You mentioned that the band did a cover of a Failure song and they had a similar sound as them. One reason for this is Failure's guitarist(Troy) was a member of APC for the first two albums before joining QOTSA.
Still in love with this band since i first heard Passive in Constantine...been listening ever since...
You saw them live when you first heard them?
@@LieLikesMusic Constantine is a film 🙂
Haha how has no one seen Constantine! Kianu reeves is awesome
Maynard’s whole career is incredibly interesting. I studied it in my 10th grade year of high school.
I think one on Thom Yorke and/or Radiohead would be pretty interesting
I saw A Prefect Circle before there first album came out. They opened for Nine Inch Nails. I never heard of a Prefect Circle until like a week before the concert my friend told me who was in the band. A Prefect Circle was great live.
Such a perfect color for your eyes.
Great song!
Mer de Noms is perfection. Still brings me to tears after all these years
It's a classic for sure. Thanks for watching
Great video. A Perfect Circle is my favorite band, alongside Tool. There just isn't anything else like them. They're music is more of an experience than just songs. There are depths to it, and the more you listen, the more you hear and experience.
Yes that's how i feel bout them too. After listening to those bands for a long time, a lot of my
memories have been embedded with their music. So every time i hear their music i get on this
nostalgia trip!
You didn't mention Troy played in Failure...That's why the influence is there.
Hahah i just realized that.
Was about to say that
Eat the Elephant is A Perfect Circles Power Windows, a massive departure in style and sound from the previous releases
For sure!
It doesnt get much more sarcastic pop than "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish" from their Eat The Elephant album.
Magdalena sounds like a love song to a stripper. "I sell my soul, my self esteem, a dollar at a time."
Lol it can sure be seen like that yes.
I think that was one of the reasons it was worded that way.
I love your videos because they are so insightful. I also adore seeing how some of my favourite artists are inspired by some of my other favourite artists
You included some MJK's footage I have never seen, congratulations
Thanks. Do i get an award?
I love a perfect circle and tool. The lead singer's voice is seductive and soothing and the lyrics are so deep
Word! They're great 😃
i love a perfect circle so much
I'm glad you do!
Always a pleasure watching your videos. You inspire me to dig deeper with the art I love.
That's great to hear Anthony 😊 I hope i introduce you to some new music that you might not know
from before. Thanks for supporting me.
Great video. Just made me love this band even more.
I'm glad you do! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
If anyone wants to listen to APC more i definitely recommend the track "3 LIBRAS". Its a very powerful song. One of their best works.
funny, first time i heard tinderbox i thought "hey, this sounds like a perfect circle!"
PS if this video gets more people listening to t-box i'd be a happy happy clam
I hope people give it a listen. It's on constant rotation over here.
This is what Creative Geniuses sound like together
Do Failure (since you mentioned them). I love them
"Mer De Noms" will never not amaze me. 🔥
Another Perfect Album by a Perfect Circle
You liked it that much?
It's so interesting to learn about their influences. I could always hear a lot of The Cure and New Wave in their music.
Like in their song 'Brena' for example.
Yeah i really enjoy connecting the dots like that. It really makes you understand the artist even better.
And in my case, i feel like i appreciate the music even more. Thanks for resonating.
Good video BUT, as you went through the band, where was Jimmy Iha’s mention? He was in a kinda largish band once too...
I know i know. I just introduced the people that were there in the beginning. But i mainly wanted
to focus on Keenan and Howerdel because they're the key players.
Troy was also a touring and light studio guitarist for Failure during Fantastic planet era
I'm surprised at the Orgy and Korn fact
Yes i heard some other people saying something about that too. I need to read more up on this.
Best band ever ❤️
Best band ever?? You really like em that much?
Yes!! eheheheh... love it
To you & those who may have helped, This is really well done. I stumbled across this particular presentation & then after seeing the other artists listed, I am impressed as a fact hungry musician. (Tim Alexander, was mentioned as the original drummer which was awesome, drummers never get enough recognition to their true contributions in any bands’ sound)...could’ve mentioned J. Freese & J. Iha in the extensive focus on Thirteenth Step though.
My opinion, a couple graphic choice differences aside (& not mentioning the excellent, diary of a madman/ love song mashup creative feat), this is really great & informative. The writing cadence & delivery is attention grabbing & the research, factoids & quotes are exceptional coupled with the well selected slides.
I can’t wait to watch one that’s placed easily in my top 8 (exchangeable drummers noted) The Volta.
Thanks for making these, good work & Keep it up!
Thank you for thinking so fondly about my video. I put a lot of time and effort into this
so i'm glad you like it. You mentioned that you are a musician. Do you play the drums?
And also do you have any requests for future artists/bands that i should talk about?
Thanks for taking the time man.
You're not going to believe me, but today I was watching your video about The Mars Volta and I thought about suggesting you to do an APC video. I feel blessed right now, hahaha. Kasabian next? it would be interesting, I love the way Serge Pizzorno mixes electronic and England's Rock And Roll.
Jose Antonio Molina Hahah that's so awesome! That's sirendipidy for ya. Kasabian? Sure. But i've never listened to them before. So what album by them is a good one to start with?
+Lie Likes Music Well, that's kinda difficult to say, I think they haven't change really much over the years. I'd suggest West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum but just bcs it's my fav haha, or maybe 48:13, I think both kinda resume very well their high points as a band. Anyway, going in chronological order would be ok too, they didn't release that much records. I think you'll love them, knowing just a little bit of your taste, haha. Hope so ^^
+Mitch Rothwell I think they haven't released a bad album yet at all, haha. One of my favs out of Asylum is West Ryder Silver Bullet, criminally underated and hypnotizing track, should be on a Tarantino movie I think. Amazing band, indeed, I'm about to see them in less than two weeks.
please be quiet
That didn't lead me anywhere hahah. I guess i'll grab anyone of their albums then since they're all that good.
Thanks for sharing your opinions btw 😊
I just realized this band existed a few month ago and, today, it seems like I know them since always...
I love all their albuns... so different between each other but so special each and every one of them!
I shift from one to the other in terms of preferences... it feels like each moment requires "that" specific album... have identical feelings towards Tool and Faith No More albums...
I'm just so glad I "discovered" and added A Perfect Circle to that restricted list of albums where I shuffle and whatever music comes out of it makes me smile! ;)
Understanding Brian Eno
Saw a concert this week, second time I seen Tedeski Trucks Band. Amazing concert I believe they are a massively underrated rock, blues, soul, jam band, that could use some more attention.
Any album or song by them that you would recommend?
Sure, I really like the title track from their new album Let Me Get By. Live version of that really shows off their range and style as a band.
Nice job on the channel, you’ve been killing it recently. 🤘 Also nice job on liking a lot of the comments, that’s pretty cool. I’d like to see a video based around Limp Bizkit or Lagwagon (I’ve said it before but just a reminder 😉).
trailerparkboyfan2 You have a lot of balls suggesting Limp Bizkit lol
Facundo Zapata thought the same thing lol
I don't get the controversy around that band. Is it the fact that a lot of people either love them or hate them?
Lie Likes Music Yeah, there has always been this general, almost unconscious hate for that band. I can see why some people may dislike them but honestly it's kinda uncalled-for, specially now
I was surprised to hear that A Perfect Circle was inspired by Adam Ant, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Cure, as I happen to also love those artists!
I'm glad you learned something new. And yes, i was surprised too. I had never listened to any of those bands
before, but i can totally hear similarities.
Look at the age group and time period.
It would make total sense.

Cant wait to check out the new album
I was gonna share my opinion, but i don't want to affect your first listen.
Was gonna buy tickets, but, since Trump is a baffoon
John Jackson hit up a Rally and listen to his Greatest Hits..The Wall, Deport 'Em-Ban 'Em, Lock Her Up, No Collusion!, Big League, My Daughter's Hot, Fake News!, Coal, They're Laughing at Us, Believe Me, and of course, SAD! Wait, I almost forgot Little Rocket Man (feat. Elton John).
Geoff Baumgartner He doesn't play the hits "Don't Bomb Syria," "Mexico Will Pay," and "Bankers Don't Own Me" anymore. I wonder why.
cloudofthought yeah, that's a tough one. I mean, he's the most truthful person you'll ever meet.
Nothing personal, MJK. Still dig your stuff.✌️👀👌🇺🇸
About Cage the Elephant, the structure of a lot of the music does match with a lot of popular music formulas, I think the album shows other tunes where the band explores Major mode tunes which it is not common in them. Great analysis.
I remember some kids I went to school went too see these guys. I gave them some very clean acid that was in town at that time and they tried it a their show. I don't think it was the right atmosphere for that but hey it's all a journey!
I learned a lot of things I didn't know about APC, thanks for the great content! I would love to see a video about Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree ❤
I actually made a series of reviews of his albums a long time ago. And i didn't enjoy them that
much tbh... But 'ill give him a second chance sometime later down the road.
I'm interested in what you have to say about it, I will have to check out your videos on it!
Nice video, simple and concise.
Hopefully, new generations of kids gonna find APC, Tool and/or Puscifer like something where they can identify in thoughts and feelings.. without think they are alone.
This happend to me in my adolescence... And each of this 3 bands that i'm naming has something interesting to take, musically and poetically.
Thanks for the feedback. Yes i hope so too. that's the point of this channel at the end of the day,
to share good music and make other people's experiences of it more meaningful. I'll definitely
check out Puscifer more since i haven't had the chance to listen to them yet. A lot of people say
great things about them.
You must be diggin on their awesome new album :)
Nah it's pretty decent. That's my first impression at least.
Billy said in an interview he didn’t care about making the cover album to much because the way they do covers they change the music up, so he has to write all that and he uses a lot of his good original material but since it’s technically still a cover he get zero publishing rights for music he wrote. Safe to say, the cover album was mostly Maynard’s idea
saw that they released an album on 4/20, now im going to hear it. thx for your videos.
Tobi -ster Wasn't it the 15th? No problem. I listened to it all the way through an hour ago for the first time. It's pretty decent. Really loved The Contrarian. This is my first impression though i might change my mind.
Lie Likes Music its so bad bro
Lie Likes Music I listen through Spotify and it was released that day. Along with so many other albums on 4/20. I wonder why 🤣.
The album is great, you gotta listen to it while stoned lmao.
picciloson i have tool for this. Listening to pop while stoned? Naah
Ooohh very nice work my man ✨
Thanks Malizia. One of my fav bands so i really enjoyed making it 🤘
Mer de Noms changed my life when it came out. I vividly remember listening to it and deftones- white pony and driving around and just being 19. It was a beautiful time. I am truly thankful I had a childhood, teenage years and early 20s filled with amazing music, AMAZING MUSIC! My heart weeps for these young generations; the absolute crusted, moldy, ear garbage they call music these day😬
Enjoying the new album very much. thanks i enjoyed this video.
I'm glad you did :) Take care
Great insightful video thank you! I suscribe.
No problem, i'm glad you enjoyed. Many thanks from Norway.
Love your work on all of the ones I have seen so far.
Consider making more on these guys: Pantera, Morbid Angel, Buckethead, Morphine, and Mike Patton 👍🏼
Keep it up!!

do both of them in the future. And no worries! We're happy that you like what we do :)
