Agreed...I think it's the most impressive performances of both Homme and Grohl in all of their impressive catalogues. They didn't take it lightly to play w a behemoth like Jones and it shows start to finish....hot damn this is such an ironic bad ass record on every level!!!
I remember an old interview where Homme said most of the album was recorded on an amp from a Moviola film editing machine and Gorilla practice amps, with some other small amps in the mix, like the Gibson he used live. He got huge sounds out of these little amps with mic placement, which probably explains the heavy room mic sound.
I have a Fender Frontman 15, which is a tiny little solid state practice amp, through which I run a bunch of tasty pedals. I can get tons of fantastic sounds.
Man I love this series. You're doing it so well. It's not only useful for the TCV tone, but guitar production/recording in general. I wish I could give you those 1000 likes.
Love this! Really good break down for people to use writing their own stuff. Maybe I should make the Qboost again but under a different name and with different components.
One of the most underrated bands of our generation! Love your clips man! Really nailed it down bud! Keep these up! Really helping me discover my own sounds!
I know another big part of the TCV album sound was using Gorilla practice amps and other 15 watt or less small speaker garbagey amps to get the breakup (likely also borrowed from EODM sessions). He also miked up the guitars acoustically to get more attack in the final sound, you can really hear it on headphones on Bandoliers! Great video as always man, we’re both around the same age and it’s good to know I haven’t been the only one growing up living and breathing everything Josh Homme!
Hey man! Yeah, I remember thinking about miking up acoustically when I first heard the record way back when. I didn't think of it when I made this video though.
Also: please revisit Jack White tone (maybe White Stripes + Raconteurs + Solo sounds). Some other suggestions: Royal Blood, EODM, Wolfmother, Muse, Incubus.
Sounds awesome! Good work! One thing to add is that I’m 96% sure he’s putting reverb before distortion to get that crazy solo sound. That way the reverb is distorted and it sound wild and gorgeous. If I’m wrong try it anyways it’s amazing (but I’m probably right :))
I'm sure you're right. I always do that because that's what the heroes did back in the day. They just plugged reverb or echo straight into the amp. No other pedals because the amp was the dirt. Jimmy Page, EVH, etc.
Great research man - inspire me to be a little more assertive in finding out sounds from watching videos and stuff. Or ill just let you keep doing it haha
So good!! You nailed it. Another one you should check out for a "how to sound like" is Band of Skulls. Incredible guitar tone. Check out the early albums.
You are a wizard! Thank you. As for a new toner chaser, in regards to Jack White, I think a Dead Weather video could be very interesting! Thanks again dude 🤘
Damn dude, this is excellent! Fantastic playing as well! -and maaaaan if you ever decided to do a full cover of one of their songs and happen to need a seasoned drummer... *wink wink* 👀
Yes, Josh used the first version of that at one time, the PDF-1.. it's got way more options than the Qzone. I have a PDF-2 and you can control the volume and gain.. Grab it! It's great pedal!
😲 Wow, I just tuned one of my guitars to C standard for the first time with 11 - 54 and the 6th string is floppy af, can't imagine how would that be with a 48 I'll just get a heavier gauge next time. Loving your content and as a huge QOTSA fan I can say that watching one of your earlier videos made want to start this new C standard tuning journey

This band doesn’t get anywhere NEAR the credit that they should! This album was a masterpiece.
One of the best albums of all time

Agreed. A hidden gem. I stumbled across the album only this year and am continually blown away on every listen!

This channel makes you feel so creative and it motivates you to play and write music. I love it! Great work mate.
Thanks a lot Jorge!
that really raw gainy tone at the very start is so satisfying, gotta hear a bass through that
All these times are very spot on. Well done. Hoping for a 2nd album from the band!
Thanks Mark!
For the next one PLEASE do the tone chase of QOTSA's Villains album....it is so unique
Oh yeah, 100%
nailed that tone. One of our favorite albums!
Top 3 guitar tone albums for me, also my gateway into Josh Homme's music. Wonderful work!
thanks Tom!

Fuuuuuck yes. If only Them Crooked Vultures would do another record!!!!
Yeah man. We need it
at some point, Josh is gonna hire you ❤️ it may have already happened in a different timeline.
haha, I've heard rumours that he has seen some videos and just laughed at them.
Is this possible with a PDF-2? QBoost is sold out :(
Not sure. It might add too much gain
Yes, Josh used the first version of that at one time, the PDF-1.. it's got way more options than the Qzone. I have a PDF-2 and you can control the volume and gain.. Grab it! It's great pedal!
YES!!!!
Just say josh homme and you have my like
Love this video, what about Radiohead? Greetings from Mexico 😁
Yes!!!!
I guess that Fun Machine is the one from the Qotsa song ?...
If you someday decide to sell that 335 let me know please
Can you reproduce these sounds on the HX stomp?
cool cat!
Does the ff embla not care about pedals chained before it? Unlike a fuzzface?
Anyway, u're nailing the tone as always
It doesn’t give a flying F what’s before it :)
@@eirikstordrangeguitar lmao, hope this video gets u to 100k subs man
I hope it helps!
Why are you so awesome ?
🤷🏼♂️
@@eirikstordrangeguitar keep up the grear work :')
Great video!
What gauge strings are you using on your ES 335 for drop A tuning?
Ernie Ball 11 - 48. Works fine, but could always have a thicker string for the lowest string. But since I go up and down in tuning, I don't.
😲 Wow, I just tuned one of my guitars to C standard for the first time with 11 - 54 and the 6th string is floppy af, can't imagine how would that be with a 48
I'll just get a heavier gauge next time.
