    One more thing I’ve come across on a few of these cars (My Dads old e60 530d and my e65 730d) is the vibration damper or crank shaft pulley. They tend to go out so checking the rubber centre for cracking or wear periodically may also be a recommended.

      I aint ever come across a diesel that has had the crank shaft pulley derail the whole system as of YET but I'm sure I will its not a common common problem on such vehicles though I might ad and I hardly hear of anyone saying that usually its people who remap them that suffer these kind of problems

      @@BMWDoctor We've had 2 go out on the same engine model but different cars. This happened around 180k kms. The AC belt came off due to the failure and knocked out a coolant pipe which gave a coolant warning light alerting us to the problem. I changed the pulley for a generic one and it failed in no time. The car made a terrible knocking sound which was misdiagnosed as an injector. We found the new pulley had failed and damaged the AC pump as well. Changed to OEM BMW pulley and car ran pefectly again.

    Hey man im working over my uncles e61 525d 2005 and he has been running with the burned up throttlebody for a while and he pulled over and stopped driving when he saw massive amounts of white smoke from the tailpipe. i fixed the throttle body and cleared the DTC's but now he has pressure and smoke coming from the top cover when i remove the oil cap. but strangely not from the oil level dip stick. engine runs well and no power lack .     My mates got a 03 530d
    He got the car of a recently passed away family member.
    The car smokes from the engine bay white smoke near the turbo.
    We left it running for 30 mins and it cut out now it starts but cuts out at 2k revs cant figure it out.

    Only problems I've ever had, and there have been very few, with the M57s in my two 530D E39s have been caused by poor maintenance. Crankcase filters not changed when they should be, they've now been changed for the later washable filters and a blown turbo because one had sat for 12 months or more and hadn't been serviced properly when the (non-BMW) dealer sold it to me.
    Other than that injectors, EGR etc are all in fine condition after 170,000 miles.
    The only other failure has been the water pump, both of them had the water pump fail at approx 165,000 miles.
    According to a number of videos listing common/inevitable failures both of the engines should be completely wrecked by now.
    Be interested to know what a common failure is 1in4, 1in100, 1in 1000...

    I do have BMW E93 330D November 2007 M57N2.
    All filter have been done,oil change ,fuel lines going into injectors,all seals but car still smoke black/blueish and you can smell like burnt diesel?
    Can you please point me into direction?
    Car been stood for about 6 months before
    Full service been done.

    Hi Doc
    I have an issue with my 530d 2004, it vibrates on idle and even more on acceleration particularly around 1500rpm, my mechanic suggests that a piece of the aluminium flaps is stuck in or around one of the cylinders.
    He went on to say I'll need a new engine if I want to keep driving the car...
    Please what do you think is the issue and what can I do to fix it without replacing the engine?

    asking for your advise please.
    Have a E46 330D msport 54reg 204bhp remap 224bhp.
    smoking & rough idle on cold start.
    HAD GLOW PLUGS COME UP ON SCAN a few months back and Swirl flap actuator? not sure if it was deleted from remap the swirl flaps activator.
    believed glow plugs and stats was causing white smoke when flooring it in dark and being winter and cold in rear view mirror smoke. also not being up to temp
    bad main stat and egr stat. sorted now.
    I know my turbo has play.
    back and forth not side to side.?
    resently had exhaust manifold done as i could smell fumes in cabin had a split in it
    was original tin ONE swapped for cast iron one.
    swirl flaps done from remap years bk
    EGR blank. from remap
    now iv had glow plugs done as 5 where gone, replaced 6 working yesterday, had low temp so main thermostat done and EGR THERMOSTAT all's fine with temp now.
    also even changed crankcase breather from a vortex bk to a new vortex breather. I no they can be cleaned up but was trying to make sure it's new when put back.
    since having the Exghust manifold change car has rough idel And smokes bad only on cold start could it be a bad injector after it being removed caused damage?smoking on cold start ups
    or when left for hours.
    before I had the exhaust manifold done it wasent smoking on cold start up or rough idol
    could this be A leaky injector, turbo, or swirl flaps actuator?
    only smokes on cold start up then gose after 30 seconds a white blue colour. a bit smelly
    any clues please .

    Thank you for the video.
    Was wondering if you have an idea on the following issue. I have a 2011 E90 316d N47 engine. The engine has been running rough on idle (it revs up and down at less 1000rpm) and feels like loss of power in low gears between 1000-2000 rpm, especially on cold starts. There is no black smoke though and I'm not sure whether it is a dpf or egr issue. I also have the following fault codes:
    1. 4B05 Zero-Quantity Adaptation, Injector, Cylinder 4
    2. 4AFB Brake Vacuum Sensor, Signal
    3. 4AFA Brake Vacuum Sensor, Signal

    I have e90 m57n2 (231) My car has a complete exhaust system, egr is canceled.. big turbo and intercooler.. my problem is this... my car runs with 2.5 bar pressure.. but the pressure suddenly drops to 0.8 at very frequent intervals without any warning light on.. when I stand aside and turn the car off and on, it gets better. But it does this very often. My map sensor is working properly

    Hi mate from your experience is m47 blow by normal? Changed to the vortex style but there is still blowby. I have not changed the diaphragm.

    Mine is running a little rough on start up. I’ve changed the glow plugs, egr delete, swirl flap delete and oil change.
    It’s slightly misfiring on idle, but disappears when hot. Anything I should check?

    Dean, I just bought BMW e46 Coupe, motor is M47 from 2004, from my gopd friend. He maintained it pretty good, oil changes and filters were regular every single year, BUT do you suggest to me to take away swirl flaps and block EGR completely anyway, or I should keep them? I checked trillion forums, videos, etc and its 70% to take em off, and 30% to keep em, and both of these people have good arguments. What should I do? Or if i decide to just clean EGR valve and intake manifold, and remove swirl flaps, will that be a good idea?

    2008 BMW E93 330Msport
    Quick question my breather is the old type and someone has removed the filter and then refitted, Will this affect the running, I know the filter is there for a reason and should be fitted so I'm going to order one. I have removed my swirl flaps and left the actuator connected, I just removed the Control rod, but my boost solenoid is quacking like a duck so gotta do that next.
    Manifold off again.. inpa mass air flow shows cylinder 2 over pressured on tick over and 5 is low red of the scale, when revved they all level off.. car runs ok but engine rock is bad and tick over is lumpy, inpa gives me fault for egr throttle control adjustment error, but i disconnect the vacuum hose on the egr and the boost solenoid /pressure converter shuts up, so i feel teh egr fault codes will go once i have replaced it.
    Still think Ive got and injector issue too.
    This car has been not loved at all. bit like your mates 5 series bud.

    Do you get any fault codes coming up with the HP fuel pump being faulty. (525D E61. ) I have an egr blanked but no shudder valve fitted, (previous owner) plug is just tucked away. Im guessing it was coded to ignore that fault code. Engine is running very rough, misfiring (its not a constant misfire like an injector, seems to be erratic which cylinder misfires) and cant get any rpm when i press accelerator just shudders and gets rougher. not always but sometimes it smokes white. smells chemical. Im thinking it may be trying to regen when the smoke happens. Ive replaced the MAF, no change. Im scratching my head over this now

    Great video, my e46 330d manual m57n 2003 204hp runs stationary pretty rough. But when cold is runs as smooth as can be. Only with warm up engine is runs rough. What should i check? Vacuum lines? Car has 550.000 km btw. And is stage 2 remapped

      @@StefuCatalin I took the intake manifold off, checked for leaks, it's not doing it any more, but I'm sure it will start again at some point. I've ordered vacuum lines and manifold gaskets

    hi, looking for advice. have an 07 530d m57. last night the hose from intercooler steel pipe vertical next to radiator to the plastic elbow on the throttle body blew off with a loud pop, the top hise clamp looked like it wasnt tight enough, i refitted the hose and also fitted a new clamp. took it for a test and within 3 minutes when i accelerated it popped again, this time it wasnt the hose that let go, the plastic elbow wgere the metal clio slips in, cracked right off and went into limp mode. im thinking wastegate as something is obviously building geps of pressure. where do i start to look at. also has oil getting through the system as inside of pipe and intercooler is oily. cheers

    Hi. old video but I'm trying to ask here and hope for an answer. I have a 530D e39 that won't start when it's hot or when it's too cold outside. kag must use start gas then it starts immediately. it runs fine in the engine when it starts no misfires or anything strange. What could be wrong? 😐

    Hi mate thanks for your video very helpful, I just have question I got noise round my turbo like whistling or jet engine when I push my foot down, I change viscous fan but noise still there it’s coming after when my friend change glow plugs and I have exhaust fumes smell for long time on the same place of my turbo or manifold too , if you can advice me where to look for the problem will be great-full , my car it’s 530d E39’s 2002 , thanks very much for your Chanel on RUclips

    Hi plse help! My 530d only smokes (greyish diesel smell) after about 4/5 mins when sitting idling? And then moderate amout of black smoke when i boot it, its mapped but it never smoked when map was changed, it started months after so ive ruled out the map, i have no dpf or egr so a mate said the maf might of gone bad , so got an oem maf but havnt fitted it yet, could it be maf or have got any other ideas with the symptoms ive given.
    Its also a bit down on power when flooring it…apreciate any help, oh i changed the breather you mentioned but where can i get the better loo roll type you spoke of, rgds rob

      all garages charge different and order from different suppliers so all parts and labour costs are different
      that is like comparing the BMW dealer prices to independent
      there is no point doing that as the price I pay for my parts nobody else can get as I get them at trade prices which you guys cannot get as your not registered traders so no point linking £300 items I get for £130 which you guys cant get

    Hi I have a X5 e70 I get a slight flicker on then idle needle on cold start up last about 3/5 seconds, if I switch on and try again it’s fine even if it’s cold , it happens once a day after sitting over a cold night

    Hello Bmw Doctor, i have a problem I'm from Romania and i have a problem with my bmw e39 525d m57 engine! When is hot outside and when the ac is on the engine has a rough idle, when i accelerate the car it pulls ok no problem! I Inpa tested it no erorr! Please give an advice! The injectors have good values from -0.3 to0.4!

    730d m57, after driving, locking the car, going to a store and when I come back and press the unlock button on the key fob - it unlocks and sound starts going off, actually it kind of sounds like a long 10-30sec fart, it seems it comes from the right side of the engine (under intake manifold), any ideas? Oh, and also when driving above 1k rpm - drives great, has great power ant torque, but if left on idle - rpms start to jump up and down +-100 rpms. Injectors are tested, filters changed, any ideas? Maybe these 2 problems are caused by the same thing that makes that sound?

    2013 lci 730d has smoke at back of engine... cant see anywhere its sitting on the tray? also power is down... no idea what it is but wish you were in QLD

    Hello wanna ask for e46 330d 2005 204hp the car is being drive in city but with 20 30 kmh when accelerating heavy it smokes blue for 2 3 seconds and then is gone is it normal only when heavy accelerating

    Hello mate just found your channel and it’s great to finally see someone that really knows there stuff. I have an e60 525d auto 54plate, had the dreaded broken exhaust manifold and nothing but running issues ever since!! I changed manifold and the car pulls off like a rocket... until you come to a stop or run at idling speed for any amount of time then the car loses nearly all boost and struggles to change up to the next gear??? Any ideas on what it could be?? Thanks

      wastegate sticking mate or egr clogged up mate egr valve sticks and wont let the car change gear same as the wastegate if its stuck open the egr valve is usually the culprit for that as its computer controlled if that valve dont shut the dme wont let the car change gear

    I have just purchased a 535d e60 as a project car, I have a lot of black smoke upon acceleration, it’s had an egr delete , swirlflap delete, and a downpipe so I’m guessing no dpf, previous keeper said it’s just had new small turbo and vacuum lines. My issue is the smoke and it’s very slow in low revs but does move when I’m higher revs, oil is black so obvs needs a service, anyone have any ideas what it could be causing this! Tia

    Hallo Mate i have a 325d 2008 and hi won't rev pass 4000 rpm... engine and gearbox run smoothly..it's automatic btw. And as soon i push the gas down... hi will shift to lower gear and it will loss all of the power and it will stay on 4000 rpm... any advice?

    What oil or grade do you rec? Of course I understand ll04 is best then as manual states ll01, 98 or acea a3/b4 but someone said c1 you can use or c something I read briefly. Also weight wise with these getting on a bit thinner oil like 0/5w or thicker as some people say bigger or older engines appreciate the heavier side like 10w40 or similiar to help with noise or heat? Newly subbed!

      No on this engine mate this is diesel it needs 5w30 for the turbos it’s crucial for a diesel

      @@BMWDoctor ok cheers buddy... The previous owner recommends valvoline even over Carroll as the coshh sheet said some wasn't even fully synth even tho it states it! Also quick query I've had swirl flaps done but would you advise egr or dpf delete for not and emission reasons?

      delete them all they are a headache and expensive to maintain unless you want to replace your glow plugs and glow plug module I would remove the def as what happens it clogs up and your car cannot region which means heats up the combustion chamber to make it warm up quick to burn all the soot away from the dpf system

      That’s the shudder valve it is meant to be open to and also swirl flaps need to be removed if you have them still in do it now or risk your engine seizing

    You do need a timing tool to lock up the timing chain to change pump I have the tool if you need it 😁

    Would you know what would be causing the car to go into 'limp' mode? I have a feeling that it is the turbo actuator or MAP sensor maybe? It's a 05 525d, the car when usually 3 gear upwards would cut the power from the turbo at around 2 - 2.5k revs and this would cause it to run under power for the duration of the engine running. Once the car is turned off an on again it works normally until it goes into this mode, when in this mode no smoke is produced, got a fault code (3F57 - boost pressure plate (1272)) sorry for the long winded comment but thought you might know if it's the actuator for sure etc ( it has started to make the noise where it sounds like a alarm from the turbo area when car is off)

    Hi mate have a problem with my bmw. today when I was going suddenly the i-drive started to turn off/on the car no firing/power and gave me an error in the gearbox and abs.
    I know I have a 5th gear error but when I stopped the car and started it the codes were erased and the car was working fine.
    But today she did not want to start after this,
    and I put the tester and no errors came out only ibs.
    The oil in the Gearbox box has been changed because I see the new screws and filter
    if you can help whit an idea thanks
    I don't know what to do , because ibs , dde relay , transmission modul ...

    Top vid doc having some of these issues myself I'm led to believe I have a fuel pump issue my gauge reads fuel but I end up running out could u spread any light on the issue cheers

      It could also be your fuel pressure sensors aswell it can also be a faulty sender unit in the tank it can be many things have you scanned the car as I tell everyone you cannot self diagnose BMW’s you need proper scanner makes the job so much more simpler

    I have a x5 e70 2008 3.0sd twin turbo I tried everything you suggested but still got rough idling and when I'm just ticking over it will start to smoke but no codes come up no lights on dashboard really would like advice don't kn where else or who to trust as been told so many things. Tried glow plugs and warmer, injectors, vacuum hoses, blanked Egr and swirl flaps, breather on engine, when your driving its fine just when you stop it's rough and when you start in the mornings if you turn full lock to drive it will cut out. Can you please suggest what I can try next.

    White Smoking (Witthaut cooling issues) + Thinned oil = bad compression
    Black Smoking = Air leeks between MAF end intake valves
    such faults were in my m57n2 231 ps engine

    Hey Doc, thanks for another great video resource to these engines. It really helps.
    I have a 2007 730D with the M57N2 engine.
    My car smokes a lot when idling only. When driving normally it has no issues but as it sits on idle again, like in traffic, it smokes again.
    The smoke is whitish gray in colour and there's a strong fuel smell outside the car. The car idles and starts up perfectly fine.
    Any ideas on what the problem could be?

      @@BMWDoctor Thanks for responding. My breather has been changed even though mine doesn't have the loo role filter nor the vortex unit. It's just empty. Ill definitely be checking out the next video. I do have fault codes on glow plug activation on all (8) cylinders. I changed the module but the errors are still there. I'm waiting for your glow plug replacement video before attempting replacing mine.

      i have the same issue with mine but when i unplug the maf the smoke goes away and the car runs fine. when i plug the maf back in the car smokes again and the small turbo does no work very strange. i plugged it into isda.... with the maf connected no boost untill 2500rpm unplug the maf boost is to back to mormal.... its had a new maf bosch maybe it was a defective part? i wonder if i unplug each injector in turn and wait to see if the smoke stops?

      Hi. No, I haven’t fixed mine yet. Your list of things done is scary...I haven’t done half of that.
      My car is however only used for long trips so it doesn’t trouble me too much.
      I did a leak off test too and my injectors also didn’t show any significant differences. On ISTA though my injector 1 and 3 seemed a bit off spec according to the mechanic I saw.
      I know my mountings are shot because I get a vibration at idle and I know they work with vacuum so maybe a vacuum leak can somehow affect fueling?
      I wish I can get to the bottom of this. I’m afraid to interfere with my injectors because the car runs and idles fine. Please do keep me posted if you have better luck.

      White is usually steam (water being heated by your exhaust) it can be normal if the car is idle for long periods or not taken on long drives. The worst case is a head gasket leaking water into the engine hence the white smoke. Have you checked your coolant and does the white smoke go after some time...

    I have a 2010 335d m57, car runs sluggish till about 3k rmps and then boost kicks in perfectly, vac lines are all new, charge pipes are new, still having the issue, I read something about the pressure converters. Do I have to fix the egr converter or the on above the turbo?

    Hey Dean hope you're good. At 3:30 in the video you mentioned about the injector testing by unplugging them.
    Do you have any more information on how to do that. I've got a funky injector just not sure which one.

      I think he meant you just unplug the electrical wiring connector to see if there is a difference. The connectors are plastic and brittle so push them slightly inwards before pressing the release clip and then pull back and away.

    I give you all the details because i need to know what type of oil is for this engine..the car has 155.000 mileage on clock.
    Some people propose thick oil and others thin oil, therefore i would like to keep this engine as much as i can...so i need to know what kind of oil is the best for this engine.

    Hellow Beemer Doctor Sir, please advice I have a similar issue at around 5mins 17seconds of your video. Fuel leaks out of the return line! As a result the car cranks only and wont start, resulting in a code 4B90 Rail Pressure monitoring at engine start. Car also has Glow Plug Cylinder 1 up to 6 NOT PRESENT fault code which keeps reapearing along with 4B90. So please advice what could be wrong for the car to only crank and not start? Could it be fuel pump at fuel tank, fuel filter or the faulty glow plugs?? Car model BMW E60 530D 2004 year.

      I do mate yes but I don’t do work outside of RUclips mate as I have no need I have got guys who can do it for you but they ain’t as clued up as me mate they still run to me when it gets out of there knowledge area but they can do oil change and things like that mate if need be
      But apart from that mate I stopped doing anybody’s cars last year mate due to having way way to many people visit me

      @@BMWDoctor thanks for coming back to me mate..... I've just got a high mileage but with good service history e53 3.0d believe the m57 engine you work on alot. I think it's got 1 or more of the faults you listed in this video. It doesn't feel very powerful. The last owner said it was remaped. I throught this was a good thing not realising things like it pushing the injectors to their max . Also believe the swirl flaps and egr system to be in install again not realising this should be removed prior to the remap etc it seems this car goes against all recommendations ...just hope it's not too bad also when you dump the foot not alot happens better with progressive acceleration bet the egr and whole thing is carboned up to the hills but on the plus no engine lights on dash yet so fingers crossed it's not severe thanks again Dean

      O yeah forgot to add possible hard start when fuel is low? Owner warned but no problem before the low fuel light is on .... off the back of your high pressure fuel pump problem
