According to “Unbound” the 1993 biography Metallica did work with Mike Clink on …And Justice for All but it did not work out and went back with Flemming Rasmussen.
Well, in NEM, the orchestration was inspired by Queen but the initial "idea" for the song was James talking with his wife, I think, with a guitar in his right hand and the phone in his left hand, thus the open string riff was created and the song started from there.
I bought this album the first day it was released and it’s a departure from their previous albums. But the song writing is very good are there are heavy tracks like Of Wolf And Man, Sad But True, Through The Never, The God That Failed and My Friend Of Misery that I love to this day. Metallica wanted to be the biggest band in the world and succeeded.
I completely agree with you but you forgot one of the heavier tracks that has a bit of an old school vibe to it. Holier Than Thou! I love that track and it might be one of my favorites off the Black Album.
@Life Is Peachy Oh I know he did a whole hell of a lot for Lars. Bob Rock is the reason why the bottom end of the Black Album is so beefed up. He also showed Jason how to follow the drums by strengthening the beats with his bass. Jason makes Lars sound so much better on the Black Album. Furthermore I agree with Bob that the bass player should be following the drums instead of the guitar. Jason originally was following the guitar when they recorded And Justice For All. At least that’s what He was gonna do before Lars lowered the bass lines to an almost inaudible volume. But all of that changed when Bob showed Jason how to beef up the bottom end by following the drums on the Black Album.
You idiots don't get it. The material was weak. I know Jason got robbed on "Justice", but the material Metallica was lacking. Kiss bob rock ass if you want. WEAK¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To all the people going on and on about the same tired "this album ruined the band", "they're sellouts", whatever the fuck; metal wouldn't be where it is today in terms of production and it just wouldn't be where it is today. This album changed metal production forever and brought it to the mainstream and put it on the radar of literally everyone like never before. Because of this album, you have bands like Slipknot, Lamb of God, Gojira, In Flames, Amon Amarth, Havok, the list goes on. Like Paul Bostaph said "Anyone who said the Black Album isn't a good record is high, it's an amazing record."
fuck it....one of the joys of old school metal was the all over the place production.....these days we have 10000 bands who all sound the same due to them all using the same production techniques...... take carcass' symphonies of sickness, it sounds far heavier than heartwork due to the production and reek of putrefaction sounds the way it does because it was so poorly produced...... hell, even metallicas own kill em all is poorly produced but that's part of the appeal. The black album sucked then, it sucks now and it'll always suck....extreme music was doing just fucking fine without mainstream acceptance
@@TheFujac and guess what? Extreme music is doing even better because of this album. Seems to me like you don't want to see bands evolve their sound and skills. Have you forgotten they're musicians? It's almost like they listen to music to get inspired! Craaazy concept right?! And if the joys of old school metal is the shitty production, does that mean Judas Priest sold out when they released Painkiller? What about when Iron Maiden released Somewhere in Time? Money = sound and all of these bands had scraps starting out and could only afford "shitty" production. As they got more successful they (or their label) could afford to spend a little more on recording. Relax bro, extreme music isn't going anywhere and it's not gonna die because bands invest more time and money to put out a good sounding product.
The thing about the bet was more specifically that Kirk bet their tour manager that if the album was certified diamond (ten million sales) he would give him HIS (Kirk's) Porsche
I'm kind of conflicted on the production of this album; I think it's the best drum sound they've ever gotten by a mile. People talk about the snare, but the *toms* sound absolutely huuuge. At the same time, I'm actually not so crazy about the guitar distortion. The clean guitars sound fine, but there's just something weird about the distortion. I think the guitars on Load sound far better, but the drums weren't as massive.
Honestly, I really don’t think the Black Album needs to be remastered. The original Black Album production was amazing back then and it still is now. With that being said, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to pick up the new Black Album Box Set. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy! The Black Album is just all around awesome no matter what the haters say!💪🏻🤘🏻
@@archangel5627 I think remastering it def just gives it that modern day clarity. There’s def a difference in depth and volume difference from the remastered sandman compared to the original. But you’re def right the CD I have of the black album which I got in like 2000 sounds better than Hardwired 😅
@@brandonkaiser8344 That’s the thing, the production was already so good that I personally don’t think it’s necessary to remaster. But like I said, I’m not against it and I’m definitely going to be purchasing that new Black Album Box Set before they’re all gone.
Nothing else matters let the black album down to alot of metal heads, not that its a bad song or anything. But look past the ballad and the black album is a fukin great album no matter what! 8 year old me listening to Sad but true, no looking back!

It's not a bad album.. But it's when they became mainstream and started playing for mainstream/not metalheads. What pretty much killed the "heavy metallica". You can't deny that.. Look at their fans in shows of the 80s and compare it to the 90s and now.
Other bands took the heavy torch and ran with it. Thrash bands got big and black and death metal took their place with the extreme shit for a few years
Well. I could say, this album is best what Metallica ever did, album isn't really thrash metal, it's too melodic being thrash metal, most heavy metal and black image than ever
I'm confused how it ruined the band? The album went Diamond! They are the most successful Metal band on the planet. Now, whether you or anyone else likes it is a matter of opinion. Their massive success cannot be described as "ruined the band." They sell out every single arena they play. All their albums are multi platinum! Give me that failure and ruined status any day if those are the results!
Kirk technically has co written a lot of songs. If we are talking about the classic Metallica, there's the Creeping Death breakdown, Damage Inc bridge with that broken gallop (probably James rephrased the riff, but he still followed Kirk's melodic structure in that riff), Fade's bridge after the verse, Disposable Heroes' bridge right after that 0-0-0 riff and the 1st verse which also serves as the riff for "Soldier boy made of clay" part, an unidentified riff or two in both Thingy and Sanitarium-> probably the chorus, Puppets pre chorus, Sandman's main riff (Lars was the one who rephrased the riff to its iconic shape), Unforgiven's verse riff, Trapped's main riff, and probably there's some in AJFA.
