I had the Mercedes A-class, Audi A3 and the Volvo V40 on my short list and I bought the V40. IMO the V40 is a better package then the A-class and on par with the A3. Yes, you do get a lot for your money buying a golf but its such a boring car and everyone got one. 😀

I have had one as a company car for the last 3 years and 70,000 miles. Totally faultless. I had to order a new company car this week. its another V40 please!

For those of you undecided, I have recently read that in Europe, the Volvos are the most reliable cars. I have a 4 years old C30 and I have never been back for warranty work, I bought the base T5. I must admit that I enjoy driving my wife Vw Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4 motion and she does not like my C30.

Hullo from Canada, just watched because Volvo have announced they'll bring a V40 or new C40 variant to N America next year-ish, and a Great Lusting has begun in my house. I'm a Golf TDI owner looking to give my settlement monies to Volvo as my down payment and I wonder at Volvo's reputation for customer service and warranty fairness in Aussie or globally. I need excuses and fuel economy and performance is not it here - unless you drop 80,000 Canuckian dollars for the Polestar. Which I'd like to do but won't because I'm stupid but not insane. Or something. the other option would be a sporty Lexus IS something or other, but they have no hatch here worth considering.

Agreed on the Golf being the best all-round package right now in the $20k-$30k range. I think the V40 makes an interesting niche offering at the T5 level. And, I mean, those seats...

Must admit, the Golf looks boring though, whereas the Volvo V40 looks much more stylish.
