  • Volvo launched its compact premium five-door family hatchback in 2012 to take on rivals such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series.
    In 2016, it got a minor refresh which included new grille mesh featuring an updated Volvo Iron Mark, new ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights, the addition of five new exterior paint colours and a total of eight new alloy wheel designs.
    The V40 is available with a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines and in five trim levels with prices starting from £20,405.
    We're testing the T3 petrol on R-Design Nav Pro spec with a six-speed manual gearbox which costs £24,845 OTR.

    I have a 2013 V40 D3 R-design, and it's fantastic. Acceleration up steep hills is awesome, making overtaking a great pleasure. Fuel economy is out of this world - keep below 55mph on a run and you can get 80mpg+. It's incredibly comfortable and I'll only get out of it if I really need to pee. I'll make any excuse to drive it. Gorgeous car. The back end is soooo sexy..

      killerdalek during filming we were saying how attractive the rear of the car remains. The V40 is like your favourite shoe. You just slip into it, are always comfy and it does everything you want. There are some lovely touches and some weird quirks (like the inverted rear view mirror against the rear windscreen). With Volvo's current run of cars, the next V40 should be tremendous.
      Thanks for the message.

      Do u still own your 2013 VolvoD3 ?
      If you do, can i ask what expenses,have u had on it as repair ?
      That doesn't include mot,insurance,service, fuel but things like tire change or other maintance/mechanical/repair work?

    Why do "they" always say that the controls is out dated? They work perfectly fine, has a god feel and you can sense where they are, with a touch screen you have to take the eyes of the road constantly.. Maybe I'm old fasion..

      Rickard Eklund so we said we like the design of the dash although some of the buttons are on the small side meaning you do have to take your eyes off the road.
      We then said that the infotainment screen was dated with lack of touch and finger zoom options while the rotary dial isn't great to use.
      As you say, if "they always" say this then surely that's a pretty decent guide.

      well, you can controll all of that from the wheel on the right side of the steering well, or use voice commands, the car in the video can be controlled using voice commands.

      Agreed.. Touchscreens in automobiles and mobile phones are an evolutionery mistake.

    Good review. You mentioned the volvo doesn't excell in any one field. How about its safety features it's a cut above its rivals. .

    Good and informative review :-), I often watch British car reviews and sometimes wonder why Car manufactores doesn't adapt their cars more to righthand side drive, in this case on the Volvo, the center console clearely has a layout for lefthand drive (handbrake). Ergonomical the important things should be nearest to the driver, what about all the other controls, are those farest away from the driver as well ? And in general on righthand drive, 1 gear is it placed futherst away as well.

      Hi Jens. Many thanks and agree with what you say. Problem seems to be development cost to swap a whole dash and internal layout to suit RHD. Electric handbrakes and auto gearboxes help though as they are more neutral.

    I know I am a bit late to the party but is the clutch really bad on these cars? I have heard that it is quite short and takes a bit of getting used to. You mentioned that it was quite heavy....any advice would be great thanks as I really like the look of them and they look such a quality car overall....thanks

    Would you buy this car or the new peugeot 308?

    • @driversseat659
      @driversseat659  7 лет назад

      Haven't tried the updated 308 yet, coming very soon to www.drivers-seat.com, however, compared to the pre-facelifted model, it would have to be the V40.

    • @mikeneirinck189
      @mikeneirinck189 7 лет назад +1

      I actually drove it. I also drove a volvo v40 with the same 1.6 engine. The peugeot felt smoother. It also has more tech. Pricewise the peugeot seems a better buy. I don't know about quality though? Why would you prefer the v40 above the pre-facelifted model? Wasn't that model car of the year in 2014?

    • @driversseat659
      @driversseat659  7 лет назад +4

      For me the V40 is a more premium product, which is why I would go for it. However, if you want something less expensive then the 308 will be the choice between the two.
      In 2014, the World Car of the Year was the Audi A3 and European was the 308, but then the Astra won ECOTY in 2016 and I wouldn't necessarily recommend that.
      My favourite overall would be the SEAT Leon FR or A3 in that sector.

    • @mikeneirinck189
      @mikeneirinck189 7 лет назад

      Yes the A3. It has to do with looks a bit too. It seems like a car out of the nineties or eighties or so. Nice tech inside. The price tag is premium too. Audi doesn't excel in mileage. Had one and after 300k you'd get rid of it. When you say more premium is that because it's better built or because the mindset of people is more positive? And is the v60 a better buy than the v40 then? (they differ 2k in price)

    • @driversseat659
      @driversseat659  7 лет назад

      Mike Neirinck there's a new V60 coming soon so we haven't tested the current model for that reason.
      Audi is premium for its build quality and the materials used.
      Have you considered the new Civic? Roomy, well priced and excellent to drive? ruclips.net/video/tUMNGZ8lZFc/видео.html
