Great list! In 91 i was in the 4th grade when i started collecting comics. I stopped buying comics when i graduated HS in 99. So i was the epidimy of the 90s collector. I am now getting back into collecting and love that i can easily find affordable copies of these great nastalgic 90s hits.

You are in the right place if you are looking for affordable 90s comics. Overall, 90s books are cheaper because for the longest time, collectors have written off the 90s as an era of garbage. Was there garbage in the 90s? Sure, but there was a lot of great stuff too. Collectors are starting to get a clue though and 90s books a slowly rising. Anything before the 90s is getting increasingly more expensive so people are starting to move their attention to the 90s. Happy collecting! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I think in terms of cultural impact, Sandman #1 should be mentioned. It launched Neil Gaiman, it made Vertigo a thing, it broadened the target audience of comic books in a big way.

The reason XMen #1 sold so many copies is due to the number#1 issue coming in five different covers and they were sold by American Entertainment and in a five comic group at a discount. They had it where a kid could attract all the books and make one long poster.

The main reason, XForce#1 , sold so many copies is because they where offered in a 5 pack from distributors. They all came poly bagged with a different card.

Great vid! Punisher War Zone #1 was a great book. I still have my copy. It was John Romita Jr. at his finest. The story really was very good too. I dont remember what happened to my copy of Youngblood #1 but I remember the art being really good and the action very over the top. I don't remember a single thing about the story. I never followed the series after that. I sold my Spawn #1 a few years ago. I wish I hadn't! It was also a great book. Beautiful art, very creative panel work. Mesmerizing even. Very interesting story too. This was also the first appearance of Sam and Twitch. This book showed Mcfarlane could write well and even do subplots. I still have my X-Force #1 with trading cards. I thinknits a decent book. Liefeld really goes all out in my opinion. Good artwork. The story makes for a good first issue and transition from New Mutants, reintroducing Cable and the gang but also introducing new members like Feral and Shatterstar. X-Men #1 was a very spectacular book with amazing art and story. It really does deserve the #1 spot. I still have my gatefold copy but sold my individual copies years ago. For the price I got for them, I really should have kept them.

Admittedly the only "gimmick covers" I liked from the 90's was the crime covers! I do have mixed feelings about, Liefeld too. I don't hate his work and I give him credit for creating one of the most iconic characters in Deadpool. I love Deadpool! I believe the Youngblood series could have been better if they got a more seasoned comic book writer. But I most definitely have to get my hands on a couple of copies of New Mutants #98!

Though these are NOT anywhere near top 10 culturally significant 90's comics, the ones I have in my collection that give me hardcore nostalgia are TMNT comics, Beavis And Butthead comics, SpaceGhost comics, Ren & Stimpy Comics, Spawn comics, Clerks comics, Bill & Ted's comics, and my Spawn Batman crossover comic lol.
Anyway, great vid, perfect list, and I really appreciate that this was done from a significance standpoint rather than a money grubbing speculator's stand point. It's funny, the most successful comics in history are generally the most worthless in terms of investment value. Yeah, a lot of the 90's stuff is pretty weak looking back on it now but the work of McFarlane and Liefeld and others like them are what got me BACK into comics at that time BECAUSE they were doing something new and different. Again, Spawn may not stand the test of time but it certainly altered its course and, for that, I'll always love my Spawn #1 even if it's worth pennies.

Hi there! Great comment! Thanks for taking the time to write it.. yes, I never do any of my videos from a speculator’s perspective. I’m a fan of the medium and I don’t care much about value. Characters like Punisher and Ghost Rider were fairly big in the early 90s.
Punisher War Zone I believe was not crazy important in itself, heck by the mid 90’s I picked it up for a dollar.
I think number 1s we’re still important back then as the market was transitioning from a run/story style collectors market to the sports card inspired rookie card (first appearances) market we see today. First appearances were still important and collected, but mostly as part of stories or if the character had that huge cultural impact.
Legend has it that a lot of dealers of cards transitioned to comics after the sports card market collapse and influenced how people collect even today.

What little funds I had for comics in the 1990s went for the indy/small press books that I loved like Cerebus, Love & Rockets, and Flaming Carrot, and I only occasionally had money enough left over to pick up a superhero comic. Consequently, I missed most of the books in your list, and appreciate the info about what's worth seeking out. But I can back you up about X-Men #1 being a dime a dozen, because I literally bought mint copies of all five covers for ten cents apiece perhaps a year after its debut. A dealer at a local con I attended had a long box full of them. And I had forgotten the Death Of Superman event until you mentioned it, but I do remember it was huge at the time. In fact, my mother saw some hype about it on TV and stopped by a comic shop I used to frequent and bought a copy for me, which she surprised me with one weekend when I was home from college. Quite amazing, considering all those years of my adolescence that she'd spent telling me "You've got enough damn funny books already!" LOL. I still have it in storage, and I have to say that I never opened it... I guess I was still too much of a fanboy at the time. Good tip about the toxic ploybag, I will have to unseal it when I get my hands on my comics again and hope it hasn't turned brown (or to dust) inside the Black Plastic Bag Of Death. Spawn #1... I paid less than a dollar for a NM copy from a seller on eBay last year, so apparently there are still plenty enough of those to go around. Thanks for the cool video, Dante.

Awesome, very interesting story! I really feel that the general view on comic books changed a little in the 90s as they became more for adults and due to the fact that the media was covering how much they were going up in value. I love that story about your mom getting you a copy of the death of Superman, after telling you you had too many funny books lol that is a cool story though, and even if it’s not worth too much, it’s a nice keepsake to have now. Yes, I would recommend taking it out of the poly bag at some post since they are toxic. So cool that you got X-Men 1 and Spawn for so cheap! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks once again for watching and commenting!

I was an older comics reader who really didn't follow trends. I just bought whatever I liked and that's how I've been since I first started reading comics in 1973. From my perspective, every era has its fair share of diamonds and garbage! You just have to know what to look for when searching for back issues! Of course, which you consider precious or trash depends on one's personal taste!
    MY FAVORITE 90s COMICS:
    1.HATE by PETER BAGGE
2.THE INCREDIBLE HULK by PETER DAVID & various artists
3.WONDER WOMAN by GEORGE PEREZ & various artists
    4.THE MAXX by SAM KIETH
5.SANDMAN by NEIL GAIMAN & various artists
    6.SPECTACULAR SPIDERMAN- by J.M.DeMATTEIS & various artists
    7.SPAWN-TODD McFARLANE
8.SAVAGE DRAGON\FREAK FORCE by ERIK LARSEN
9.SWAMP THING- NANCY COLLINS & various artists
    10.BATMAN-DOUG MOENCH\KELLY JONES
11.OMAHA,THE CAT DANCER- by REED WALLER & KATE WORLEY
    12. THE LEGEND OF KAMUI-SAMPEI SHIRATO-This is a title that was reprinted in America, otherwise I would have ranked it MUCH higher!

EBAY is full of non-comic book fans/sellers/collectors..Basically it's just people trying to get rid of boxes and boxes of magazines that do not know the true value of them. That's why you see them for so cheap! LOL
That PUNISHER #1 issue from 1992 ink/penciling by John Romita Jr is worth over $400 if it's a (9.8, 9.9) because it's a KEY ISSUE, and its also part of JRJR's Top 10 key issues that he ever did!
Actually if you AUCTION a "10.0" Gem Mint condition, you can get more than $500 for it, maybe more, depending HOW BAD the Punisher Loving Collector is willing to BID for it.
Usually that's how comic books end up selling for 2.1 million or 3 million dollars! Hahahaha
Anyways, NICE assortment of 90's comic books you have, Brother! I like it 👍👍🔥

Hey bro, You need to get BATMAN #497 Newstand Edition (dated July 13, 1993) Make sure the little circle Marvel eblem in top left corner is BLUE. Make sure the BATMAN Logo is WHITE. They came in yellow, red, blue and WHITE.
IF you have a 9.8 it's worth over $300... a "10.0" can fetch more than "500 !! Technically, it all depends on HOW BAD the BATMAN fan Collector wants it. And that will determine HOW MUCH you actually get for it at the end of the day.
9:32 The one you have is not the "key issue" version, but it's still a great book!
BATMAN #666 is also a KEY ISSUE bcuz it's the REMATCH FIGHT between Batman & BANE!! That one is also worth lots of money to BATMAN fan Collectors!
Plus 666 is the Mark of the Beast, so that also adds FUN to the cover and Collectors think it's funny or pretty cool ..Whatever floats your boat man! Haha
LEARN the game, Brother... know your Key Issues...which ones are worth more, etc etc.
NEWSTAND EDITION, Newstand Variants are usually the best ones that are worth the most for MARVEL, DC or IMAGE and others more... Good luck, Cheers! 🍺🍺

Thanks! I appreciate it! I think I would agree... I really love Infinity Gauntlet. Definitely one of the best from that time. I still actually have yet to read Infinity War. I'm glad you like 90s comics so much! I know comic collectors usually undermine the 90s, but in my opinion, if you get beyond that the books are not worth a whole lot, in comparison to silver or bronze age keys, you are left with some awesome art and stories.

lost my husband- unknowingly found a well preserved collection of ? 2000+Comics ranging mostly from the 70's up to ? 1998 ....
Full runs mostly individually wrapped boarded baged/ stored in comic short-boxes.
    Probably 20-25% are these three
    Batman ( Robyn too)
    Superman
    Spiderman
    ( cat woman supergirl too)
(Some nice Venoms too, holographics etc..).
Most of my comics are runs... I may have ALL the X0's ( w/ multiple copies of certain ? Key's), Harbinger as well.
Found a full set of bevis and butthead
And those types of iconish titles, etc... Spawns- i have those you hold and many more.
I have them! I am rambling!!!

If we are using the cultural impact during the 90s as criteria, then I'd argue the NM98. Deadpool never made much of cultural impact until the films came out. He was only popular in the comics in a niche sort of way. NM87 and Cable were a much much bigger deal at the time.
NM98 usually makes the list because of hindsight, not because of importance during the timeframe. NM98 wasn’t culturally relevant until the 2000’s. so not sure why it’s on the list, nor why you kept being up monetary value in a list of cultural value.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 лет назад

That is a good point that you make.. in hindsight, I should have at least included NM 87. I wasn’t aware that Deadpool was more of a niche character at the time ( I was 3 when he came out).. I was just basing that on the fact that Deadpool follow up titles came out in the 90s and the fact that NM 98 has been hyped about over the last 15 or so years. Thanks for that suggestion

Decent list. IMO, BATMAN ADVENTURES #12 should've cracked your top three. C'mon man. The first appearance of Harley Quinn!
BA#12 fetches higher ebay prices than NM #98. I'm certain BA#12's print run was lower. But wasn't Harley Quinn's earliest "non-comic" appearance in a coloring book? Or at least, that's what I thought 🤔

I agree in regards to the criteria outlined at the beginning of the video. Spider-Man 300 had had a larger cultural impact in the comic world still and even more so at the time. However much more recently, Deadpool has had a larger impact culturally (non-comic) due to the success of the films.

There is so many Death of Superman books, it's mind boggling how the price is going up. I have too many of them. The only "expensive" one is MoS 18 because of the first full appearance of doomsday. it's not really that high of price it's just that there thousands of them out there.
Spawns prices is ridiculous given the millions of books out there.

Did any publishers use the silver metallic and die cut covers in regular books before 1990? Seems like they because e commonplace throughout the decade.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  4 года назад +1

Before 1990s, no, at least to my knowledge. All the die cut covers, metallic and holographics came as a result of merging comic books companies with toy and sports card companies. As far as I know... Marvel started the trend when Ron Perelman bought Marvel in the early 90s as well as toys and sports card companies. He started gimmicks like holographic covers and including trading cards in comics to make them more appealing for the collector base. Sales improved dramatically for a few years, but this strategy ultimately failed. By 1997 marvel had to declare bankruptcy. They were saved only by getting rid of Perelman and starting to make movies.

I was a big fan of 'Nth Man.' 1990's Big fan. I could not wait for the next issue to come out. It was good up until issue 8 to 10. Batman stories was always great reads. Favorite artist was Todd McFarland Spider Man Jim Lee X Man, Jae Lee, Stephen Platt, Marc Silvestri and I forgot his name at the moment ... artist he died of cancer drew dark heavy metal style ... heavy dark inks... anything those guys drew had to see it. Coming up Punisher was my favorite then Romita Jr. took over I quit Punisher.. hated the look.. then Batman became my favorite character of all time. Spawn was good up until #23 then I couldn't take the story anymore. Of all the comics I read Batman still the best read. My older brother who is the collector I remembered he loved the Infinity Gauntlet series.

You missed the easy #1 most influential comic of the 90's Harbinger #1. You didn't even have it on your list which is disappointing. Harbinger set Valiant up to dominate with their story telling. That in turn has influenced every other comic that has come after the comic crash. Marvel and DC were forced to improve their stories. Also anyone who collected comics in the 90's probably wanted a copy of Harbinger #1 but many couldn't get it because of the low print run 40K copies. Good video though I remember all of those books coming out. I was also the smart kid who thought buying 30 copies of X-Force #1 and Spawn #1 was going to make me rich. Lol.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  6 лет назад +2

Thanks for the comment and the suggestion! Actually, funny you mention Harbinger 1. I was really young in the early 90s so I don’t remember the book, but I have been hearing a lot about it lately. I have been looking for a copy, but they are very expensive (probably due to the low print run). Hopefully I can get my hand on a copy in the future to see how great it really is! Your comment about spawn and x-force gave me a chuckle so thanks for that. I love hearing from people who lives the speculator bubble. For me,
it is the most fascinating period of comic book history! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @KollectingKaos

I have to agree there, I remember selling my Harbinger #1 for $150 just before the bottom fell out of valiants and the price of it started to plummet, probably around '93 or '94. I had preordered 10 from my local comic shop, and when it came in he limited them to 1 per customer, and had them at $10 each. I was pissed. Since I had ordered it I felt I should get at least 2 or 3, I did manage to get it for cover from them and I came very close to canceling all my preorders with them at the time I was so angry. I still have a first print of the trade paperback, so can still read it. Valiants idea of only printing to what was ordered was kind of nice for those that got in early. My favorite of all of them to this day remains Archer and Armstrong and I still have my run of those. They are the only Valiants I have never offered for sale.

Can't help noticing your other top books of other decades had 20, this has 10. Telling of the 90's. With few exceptions this is the decade that ruined comics for old school fans. Everything bad started here. The chrome, the variant covers and although comics have always tried to take advantage of what's hot right now by imitation, Marvel took the cake, The 90's for marvel were Wolverine, Punisher Ghost rider, more spiderman titles and X-everything. Lot of classic heroes, especially the FF were all but kicked to the curb for the five or so titles that just kept beating like a dead horse. Also as far as value..I'm fairly certain Spiderman 300, especially with the recent movie has more value than NM 98...but maybe its a back and forth kind of thing.

Look forward to chatting more! You may be right about ASM 300, especially at this particular point in time.
