I absolutely worshipped Alex Ross in the 90s. His Marvels books were groundbreaking, in terms of both art and storytelling. And as an aspiring comic artist at the time, you couldn’t get any better!
Also JLA#1 By Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. That was hugely influential on both the cartoon and the later movie.

New to your Channel I like these type of countdown videos always looking for for titles I've never read or was aware of but surprised you did not mention X-Factor #71 the new Main run of X-Factor just an amazing read from Peter David I suggest doing a video about underrated titles from the 90's I have to give Lifefield a bone for a min an say his artwork was the holygrail of what you think when you see comics from the 90s and if you compare todays artwork to even his from then its just a huge step back in artwork but thats just my opinion great video liked Subscribed

I used to have a drinking problem .In fact I am a recovering Alcoholic ..I legitimately don't remember 1990 , 1991 and the first 3 months of 1992 . I used to think that nothing good came from 2+ year black out , but after seeing this video I realized that I was just killing enough brain cells to better prepare me for some of what was to come in comics . HOO BOY , there was some Four Color Crap in the first half of the 90's . it to agree with you , The Death of Superman story was NOT among them . I know it's become cool to rip on this storyline . In fact , I would go as far as to say it has almost become DC's Clone saga as the go- to story for ridicule . Why , eludes me as it had a good build up , an emotional culmination , and a satisfying resolution (it ain't like they were gonna leave him dead !) Moving on to Batman ..it's true that the first thing anyone remembers about 90's Batman is Knightfall because of Bane and the passing of the mantle temporarily to Azrael . And not to take anything away from this story , it pales in comparison to what I believe is the single greatest one character event (and by that I mean non company wide ) event in comics history , No Mans Land . I realize this video isn't about the. Best books , I just wanted to mention it .
I hope there will be a follow up video covering the best comics of the 90's (if you have already done one , my apologies ) There were a lot of great titles in the 90's (Hit man , Resurrection Man to name two ) that have largely gone down the memory hole .

The Superman books between Byrne and the death did not sell like X-Men, but it blew it away all comers in terms of quality and was equalled probably only by The Incredible Hulk in that era (another book that did not sell nearly as much as it should have). They had Roger Stern and Louis Simonson at their peaks, Jerry Ordway (one of the best writer/artists of the 90s) and Dan Jurgens just coming into his own as a creator.
I know right. I’m not a huge Superman fan, but Superman in the 90s was awesome!
Yeah I’m not really into Superman but you can’t argue against the comic that got mainstream news coverage.

I haven't read a comic book in 25 years. I was lucky to have a comic book store on my street growing up, so I went there almost every day after getting my slice of pizza and playing arcade.... then make it home just in time to wat h dragonball .... i loved the 90's

As a kid, I believed Superman was going to die permanently. This, killing Superman, was crazy to me!!!
I agree with most of your list except for the bottom three. IMO, there are other books that are more representative of the culture at that time and also continue to be well-loved and relevant. Perhaps "Uncle Scrooge #285," which was the first issue of "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck." Also, Sin City and Preacher.
There were a lot of bad kid comics sold in the 1990's. But I was reading a lot of Vertigo comics with mature content in the 90's. Though the books often had graphic content, they contained good writing and good art. Sandman by Neil Gaiman was a sophisticated comic book that brought a lot of females to the hobby. Reading "Preacher" was a guilty pleasure for me. The violence was comically over the top, but I could always read an old Archie comic book afterwards to balance things out. A successful TV show was based on that property. My point is, out of 20 books on your list, you could have put at least one Vertigo book on the list as being culturally significant as part of the innovative mature branding of a portion of the DC line.
Great Vid again Dante. I agree with all of them. But if you will have some of them based on cultural significance. You may even make it like a top 30: Thunderbolts, Preacher (It has a TV Series), JLA by Grant Morrison, Avengers by Kurt Busiek, Gen 13 (all that teenage angst), Withcblade (bad girl art), Daredevil by Smith and Quesada (Netflix series) and even The Sandman by Neil Gainman. All have cultural significance at that time. BTW how's the Thor body challenge? Thanks and have a good one.

Great video! Just subscribed. This is very good as a list for influential comics, but I disagree about two or three picks, and I think some others are missing.
The Maxx and Gen 13 come to mind, as two series that were tremendously popular and influential back then.
The Maxx had an excellent animated adaptation in the segment "Oddities" of MTV, that is nowadays considered a classic, and Gen 13 was by far the most up to date comic published in that era, so much so that it's become unreadable by todays public for precisely that reason. It's too dated, but back then it was and felt like a very young comic, by young creators, who spoke to a young public. As a result, it sold extremely well, even if the content wasn't timeless at all and only worked for teens of the 90s, during the 90s.

I really like this series with top comics of the decade so maybe you could dive into other geeky stuff from different decades as well, whether it be video games or other things that had a large cultural impact. Regardless I’d say go with what you know and enjoy because that will make it more enjoyable for us!

Hey Dante, talking about speculation, it's still a problem today. Try buying Naomi at your LCS and you will see what's happening. Check E Bay to see new comics selling for inflated prices, often before they arrive at the shop. It could be argued that spec issues may be putting people off buying a series as they are impossible to get. Could be a video idea for you ? Great work mate
Hey Louie! Excellent point. I started noticing that speculation was running rampant again when Batman Damned came out. I thought at that time I would try to pick up that series because it looked cool, but they were all outrageously priced. I don’t know what’s going on or why people are speculating. Great list! I'm surprised by how many are in my own collection. What about the fall of Hal Jordan and rise of Parallax? Another cheap "death of" gimmick perhaps, but I thought it was awesome as a kid!

Excellent suggestion! I couldn’t agree more. I feel he is a perfect fit for a book like sleepwalker, especially after seeing his Spawn stuff and his work on Batman. Seriously, the way he drew Mr. Bloom gave me the creeps. So great!
Ya that first appearance of Deadpool book is going crazy high now 🔥 out of reach for a lot of fans, carnage and venom however are at all time lows 🤷🏻 just bought ASM 361 yesterday for a good price in a high grade im happy 😄

there are so many channels out there. i watch your videos mostly for the comic book and super hero content. Even if you are going to do a "videogame" video i think it should be about super hero video games. And another good topic would be "superhero props or toys (not for cosplay) that has even been made"
Awesome suggestions and thanks for your feedback. Yeah, I’m going to do some videos in the future that are related to geek culture but not necessarily superhero or comic related. However this will always be a comic book channel and I will always do comic book videos. Majority of videos will always be comic book related lol

Unpopular opinion but the 90s are my favorite. Marvel and DC were trying to create numerous characters and do very drastic changes with the stories and I like that. I don’t like traditional stories and I really like all the experimenting that companies were doing in the 90s

Honorable Mention: Catwoman got her own solo series in 1993 (the first of Batman's female villains to do so) and arguably paved the way for many more solo female-led titles. Chuck Dixon and the incredible Jim Balent joined forces for the amazing 'Catfile' arc, and later we get to see Bane, Batman, Penguin, Joker, Two-Face, Robbin, Scarecrow and a whole host of DC's most famous creations. She featured prominently in the 'Contagion', 'Legacy' and ''Knightfall' plot-lines. Catwoman's 90's run is incredibly underrated and deserves the spotlight! Do her justice, Dante!
Hey Chrissy! Thanks for the suggestion. To tell you the truth, I’m not up on a lot of my Catwoman content, but I’ll check out her stuff from the 90s. I really started reading comics with the New 52 and let’s just say that the Catwoman title they put out wasn’t the best, so I never bothered to check out more of her stuff. Now that I have heard that her stuff from the 90s is goo, I will definitely go and check it out. Thanks!
okay, I bought 5 Copies of X-Force #1 because the comics came with 1 card...and there were 5 different cards. I HAD TO HAVE ALL 5...isn't that insane? But that's how extremely into Comic Cards i was at that time.

Anyway, this is a pretty solid list. The only big impact books I think you missed were:
Batman The Long Halloween. HUGE influence on the Nolan movies.
Sin City. Received its own movie adaptations (2 of them).

All 90s comics should be a buck and no more the comic book industry in the 90s should be tried and convicted for being drug pusher but with comic books,it’s one reason I don’t collect anymore,but sell instead

Little tip for investors, go grab all those Harbinger comics out of your local shops .50 bins. A Bloodshot movie is coming out and Harbingers will be part of it.

Preacher, JLA, Uncle Scrooge “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck” Hitman, the Garth Ennis run on Hellblazer and Sandman even though it started in 1989, the majority of it influential run was during the 90’s, just to name a few.

No witchblade, no darkness? Was this like a mainstream list only? There were plenty of nice books that came out in the 90s but the ones that launched top cow were AMAZING! Not only in terms of art (because that’s not even an issue up for debate. Silvestri, Michael Turner, c’mon man.) but stories and content. They took books to a different place and introduced a new kind of hero, one indistinguishable from the villain at times, who was needed to push comics into the 21st century. Big miss, in my opinion.
What are the best 90s comics arcs/runs or complete comcis based othe actual substance.. not anything else.. Just the best pencils best inks best story telling best writing ect.. Not collectables or cultural impact or dales or cool cover art or hype

Oh Boy I have to start by saying I'm really loving this channel and the commentary from the subscribers here.
I have to call you out though on some of the books on this list.
Spawn... the book sucked! Todd was very creative in his self appropriation of his Spiderman visuals and the colorist deserves an award for sure.... but the story sucked, it never moved, there were huge delays in release dates and the book broke all of it's own rules. Spawn had a power meter (there is your video game reference) and was supposed to deplete his power as the story progressed eventually sending him hell for all eternity... a compelling premise for a hero's arc. Todd at some point arbitrarily thought that was a bad idea and had it vanish from the book since its implication would have killed off his character even though that was the premise upon which he sold his idea to the fans. Instead of a great anti-hero story which we were promised we instead got pages and pages of an all powerful being laying in an alley with bums. Less then a year into its run even Todd didn't care about his creation anymore as he first started with guest artist of the month ghosting and then finally stepped away from the book creativity all together in favor of Todds Toys. Todd is not and never was a comicbook fan... he simply was an arrogant guy who wanted to get rich and play hockey A... which he did and power to him for that as he was a true businessman and entrepreneur at the right place at the right time. But his lack of love for the medium shines through in everything he touched.
Now Rob Liefield on the other hand is the total opposite. He was a true fan with not much talent but a love for the medium. He was a lousy businessman and had no story telling ability... but his passion and love for comics show in everything he touched.
@biggs949597 s yes what you are saying about sales is true... but he also talked it up as a good book, which it wasn't.
@biggs949597 s that is 100% your opinion and I respect that.. however I never really liked Todd's work or more so his cavalier attitude towards other artists and comicbook fans. I also question how his art was actually produced and how and with what it was done. I say this because I have seen several times were Todd was asked to draw something on camera and it seemed he couldn't do it. By contrast good or bad I have seen Liefield put on the spot to draw something and he did it just like he would on a regular book. Now I realize that this in and of itself is not proof of Todd's lack of ability but it would either be that or his attitude that he doesn't need to do anything for his fans because he is so great... has to be one or the other. And I used Rob as an example but I have seen a 100 other artists including Jim Lee do a little drawing in public for his fans.
@biggs949597 s some of the instances that I'm talking about were paid events where he was getting paid for the appearance. In fact some of them were specifically about drawing (also the industry) and methods of drawing and how to draw... but he did everything but draw even though he was asked to. I'm not talking about people running up to him in his private life when he is out with his family at dinner or something... I would understand if he told people to fuck off in those cases (if that's the way he feels). But paid appearances where he was invited to demonstrate art. Like a comedian invited to tell some jokes or a singer invited to sing a song... but he wouldn't or couldn't do it... he's either a hack or an asshole or possibly both.
But in spite of saying all that I'm ok with you thinking he's the greatest.. if his art speaks to you good that's what art is supposed to do. What do you think is his best run on a title? And out of curiosity did you buy the run new at the time off the stands or discover it in back issues?
@biggs949597 s quick question before i go further and because I'm too lazy to look it up but was he on ASM during the cosmic arc with the hulk crossover or was that Larsen by that time?
@biggs949597 s I remember the Hulk Mr. Fixit thing... that's what eventually led uo to the professor Hulk run.

I enjoy your vids but not a fan of the 90's comics. I did enjoy Knightfall and Lethal Protector. I disagree with your first pick because it was an artificial hype which was part of the downfall of comic book market.

This isn't a very good list. Kingdom Come and Marvels were superb, and Knightfall was OK, but the rest? Dante isn't making his selection based on quality. He's making it based on whether it embodies stereotypes of what comics from the 1990s were like. That is notoriety, not quality.

Top 20 superhero comics of the 90's. Sheesh talk about miss a whole lot of good stuff from the 90's, which have influenced comics - as of 2019 it is just not superheros.

@@Dante19883 I managed a comic shop in the 90's, and I agree, boy there was a lot of hype. The Image machine was rather good at it. That said "Preacher" by Garth Ennis was our biggest seller and has been hugely influential. The rise of female writers and and artists blew up in the 90's, and we have that legacy to thank for so many great comics now. When you didn't mention "Lost Girls" by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie I was totally confused . "Lost Girls" was another comic we sold in droves, and completely change a lot of people's attitudes to the medium - and is still causing controversy to this day. If you have not read it, I recommend you do, it what 100 pages or so - it not only tells a wonderful story, but explains everything wrong with comics as well. I really enjoy the channel, and will keep watching - great stuff dude, keep it up.
