The 90s was a tumultuous time for comics. The decade saw sales rise to record highs before plummeting to an all-time low. But during that speculator boom, we got a bunch of key issues, first appearances, and big event books. In this video, Josh from Panels to Pixels takes a closer look at The Most Important Comics of the 1990s.

Only the 90’s would think to itself “What if you had a Venom who was even more Venom than Venom..”
Maximum Carnage is easily in my top 10 Story crossovers of all time!😎💣🔥🎯💯📠
My favorite artist is Jack Kirby for his drawings of cosmic energy
you should check out the collages kirby made, theyre awesome
Jack King Kirby!
My favorite 90’s book is definitely Alan Moore’s Supreme run. It plays around with and calls out the 90’s style of writing and art in such a way that even books 25 years later can’t quite get right, and Moore did it smack dab in the middle of the 90’s. It’s an unsung masterpiece and will forever be my favorite 90’s book.
Man I been looking 4 my Supreme comics 4 years
That is a great run that not a lot of people talk about
It's both Alan Moore's love letter to silver age superman comics and an apology letter for all his work that influenced the overly gritty 90s
Omega red is one of the coolest looking X-Men characters
No doubt & a master killer!😎💣🔥
I have that comic - X Men no 4, but it's in terrible condition - still intact, but the cover has some stains on it, it's discolored in the back....urgh....
Cartoonist Kayfabe has covered the story behind Spawn issue 9 pretty well. They went through the issue page by page, and they also read out several of the court transcripts from when McFarlane and Gaiman were deposed. I highly recommend watching their videos on the subject.
Having the complete 2099 run and the complete Wolverine v1 and v2 runs are still the highlight of my comic collection.
Pls donate issue 2😭🙏 I just got the first issue and I wanna read the rest it’s such a good comic
I'm sorry, but no mention of Hellboy, from Mike Mignola and published by Dark Horse, is a GLARING omission. Launching in 1993, Hellboy, unlike most of the Image books of the time, has subsequently developed into its own Universe. I'm actually shocked that he's not on this list. Arguably one of the most enduring characters in all of comics. In fact, Dark Horse Comics as a publisher truly came into its own in the 90s.
I can listen all day about how you talk about the comics of the 90s. Thank you for making my day
Wow...I'm torn. On one hand, Domino is my single favorite character in all of comics history.....Yes really.....No, I've been collecting since the mid-80's.....Dunno, I just like 'er......BUT on the other hand, I'm struggling with calling X-Force #11 important. Oh well, err on the side of positivity. Great choice!
I think Domino's appearance in Deadpool 2 definitely boosted the amount of people submitting her first appearance for grading, which is what this ranking is based on.
Oh sure, that absolutely tracks, just wish content-wise it was more deserving of preservation. Liefeld buggered off just as the story was finally spotlighting my fav member, and his replacement hadn't put in the hours yet. Sidebar: To my eye Domino/Copycat's 1st appearance remains Liefeld's strongest char design. Striking as hell, before he dumped more 90's on her shoulders....literally.@@PanelstoPixels
Y is she your favorite??? I'm just curious. I can relate, though. Also, idk much about Domino as a character.
Started out just visually, b/c gawd knows there wasn't much character depth there. I
I'm still confused as to why #11 is considered a first appearance when #8 takes place before the switch and has Domino in a much larger role. Can anyone explain this one to me?
I know 90s is your area of expertise but would love to see this for other decades. Really good video as always
Great idea. If people dig this style of video, I'd love to take a look at other decades.
Yep! I have two variants of that X-Men No. 1. One has the gatefold cover!
First new upload since I subbed to the channel like a week ago hell yeah dog
Thanks for subscribing!
@@PanelstoPixels No problem! I usually find most comic book youtubers a bit annoying (except for Alex Lennen, Owen Likes Comics, and ComicTropes), but I really enjoy your channel, so much so that I binged every video you've ever made in half a day. Anyway, I like your stuff and I hope you make alot more of it.
I'm surprised you didn't make a "not now, maximum carnage" joke at the end
Another great post
Your enthusiasm is infectious.
I won’t comment every time you put content out but thank you in advance.
You can see the time you invest this.
Thanks! I appreciate the recognition. 🙏
All amazing books. And I'm honored to have them all in my PC. Great job.
Always quality content. Thank you.
Hey man, love your videos (especially 90s ones) and just wanna say thanks for getting me into whatnot. I saw an ad you did in a video a few months ago now and I’ve not regret signing up since 👍
Thanks! Glad you're having fun on Whatnot, it's a really cool way to buy comics. I've picked up a lot of interesting stuff on there.
@@PanelstoPixels heh, funnily enough I’ve seen you pop into streams I’ve been in too. It really is a great way of getting comics
Can we just talk about how new mutants 98 cover did Domino wrong?
Please make more videos, you’re really good at this dude ❤
Really loved this video. Great timing, too - funnily enough, I’ve recently organized a lot of my old childhood comics and found a bunch of these in my collection as well. And while my New Mutants 87 is a reprint, I’m fairly certain I have first editions of McFarlane Spider-Man and Venom: Lethal Protector number ones haha.
Lots of great choices here. Some issues I’d probably have on my own version of this list would be Wolverine number 50, with the yellow cover with the slash marks that opens up to a whole scene of Wolverine’s (then unknown) past. Plus an in-canon explanation for why he dropped the brown costume and went back to the tiger stripe!
I’d also probably include Batman 497 for that cover alone. The breaking of the Bat is always one of those moments and images that I come back to from childhood.
Awesome list, insightful video. Great to see some of these issues again!
New Mutants 98 is probably one of my favorite comic book of all time
I have an ungraded copy framed in my bedroom
Nice
What is your favorite comic
Very stoked to see I own 6 of the issues you presented here! Collected across my life. Great video, Josh! Super interesting!
Lots of great 90's comics. 😀👍
Great list, great video. Thanks!
90s comics are the best
Nice way to spend Valentine's Day🦸💬💘
Ron Lim, Whilce Portacio, George Perez, Frank Miller, Jim Lee...great artists of comic book lore. Nuff said.
I have a CGC graded 9.4 of that man of steel 18. Was a really lucky find of mine
I don’t know if I missed it, but I’m just shocked I didn’t see The Death of Superman listed, let alone not being number 1. Wasn’t that the one that made the news in the big media?
Thanks for the video
8:53 😮Wow. Thank you You do the digging!
14:24 This comic made me get the action figure.
Love your channel. Really liked you Q and A a week or so back.
Thanks! Much appreciated.
I'm surprised you stuck so closely to really only a couple of books and characters. I found myself wondering where Punisher, Sandman, Daredevil, Lobo and Bone might appear on this list.
I had a bunch of these but i was too impatient to wait 30years for them to be worth anything. However, i still have a few Spider man #1 in the collectors item bag! I'll hold onto them for a few more years!
Great retrospective!!!
Really love the videos! You got me to give Whatnot a try in the US
Thank you! Have fun on Whatnot.
I’m struggling to find out why Domino would be that important… especially more important than Doomsday for such a niche character lol
Watching this video has me nostalgia sick. I have tons of comics and during the pandemic working from home I decided to thin out my collection. I had most of these books (except the HQ book) but sold eight long boxes of 90’s books for cheap just to make some room. It’s now one of my biggest regrets. 😢
This was my time period… actually have a lot of these items in your list. My prized possession out of this is the misprint of Venom #1.
Put in a preorder with my father at the local comic shop and one of my copies was the misprint.
Next time I visit home I need to dig that out and get it slabbed.
Exellent video, the best 2000, 80, 2010, etc
To me it's easy to sum up the 99's anything Simon Bisley. Judge dread, rogue trooper, alan Moore, a lot of image crap, spawn, dark horse star wars, and sin city, cerebus, Doomsday, and spider man and X-Men. 😂❤
While not especially valuable or noteworthy for collectors, Wolverine #90 Deluxe is one of my favorite single issues of the decade hands down. Also, I hope to see you doing more videos like your Iron Man 2008 breakdown! There are a ton of winks and nods to various comics in films like Spider-Man 2 and The Punisher 2004 that might be worth a look in the future, not to mention the Fox X-Men universe.
Also you're background light is sick
Surprised Superman #75 wasn't on this list...
When Captain America and Paladin took on 49 Femizons was my favorite storyline in the 90s.
I also read Gaurdians of the Galaxy, XMen Blue, Secret Defenders, XMen 2098 and (L0Lz) Ravage 2099. When he turned into a monster? I was done. WT*.
Collected a lot of Image comics for the art too.
Happy Valentine’s Day ❤
Wow,...my
first time watching ...the algorithm must have sent u. Great video Bud___ i got all that X stuff but i cant find my Xmen annual 😖...i enjoyed this rundown!!
I see what you did there with the mention of Gary Coleman, Different Strokes TV series and then Whilce Portacio immediately after.... For those who don't know the famous phrase from the TV series, it's "Whatchu talking 'bout Willis"
Haha, that was totally unintentional but I'll take it. Now I'm annoyed at myself for not working in a "Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Whilce?" line.
@PanelstoPixels ahhh I hope others picked up like I did, made me chuckle making the connection. Let's just call it an Easter egg to be found 😅
I have all but 5 of the comics you showed. I bought them in the 90's when I was younger 😊
Some important books that didn't make the cut, but epitomise 90s comics for me.
Wolverine #50 (Return of the yellow and blue costume)
X-Men #25 (Magneto removes adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton)
X-Men Alpha (Start of the Age of Apocalypse)
Ghost Rider vol. 3 #1 (Introduction of Danny Ketch version of Ghost Rider)
Web of Spider-Man # 117 (Start of the infamous Clone Saga)
Spawn/Batman (It's Spawn and Batman, duh!)
The Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect #1 (First appearance of Maestro and highlight of Peter David's incredible Hulk run)
I’m with you on Wolverine 50. Didn’t think about the Fatal Attractions issue, but yeah - that’s a pivotal 90s comic too.
Kinda wild to leave out Ghost Rider #1. Danny Ketch is almost forgotten at this point, to the general public
Fun video! Really surprised me with #1, but should’ve thought about it as the list dwindled down, as it really wasn’t that surprising, haha! I don’t know if anything trumps New Mutants 98, though, especially with Deadpool 3 on the horizon. The 90s were awesome, that’s for sure.😌
Venom Is my all time favorite comic character, good to see home get some love here
please turn this into a series and explore other decades 🙏🏼
I grew up in the 90's and I would say either Jim Lee's X-Men or Todd McFarlane's Spawn is what I think of when I remember those past days haha. Loved Jim's and Todd's art, still do.
The early to mid 90s had so many special editions, and I owned a few especially all the new Spidermans, but hands down for me Slapstick was my favorite 90s introduction,he may not get the credit he deserves but could easily wipe the floor with just about everyone.
I haven’t read comics since the 90’s, but I definitely had most of these you listed. And whichever ones I didn’t have my friends had.
Any chance you could do a video on the Fantastic Four comics
No death of Superman in number 1 ? Weird
Don't really agree with your order but really well done video. Great stuff
I got the new mutants #87 the gold cover version. 😀👍
Thanks for clarifying Gambit's 1st appearance. I've been on the fence about buying a high graded copy. Just confused on what really was the correct 1st appearance.
I always liked ravage 2099
Hellboy?
I agree across the board with this list with the exception of 1 thing.
Next men 21 or Dime Press comics should be on that list somewhere. First appearance of hellboy (who I fill is underrated and looked over when the discussion of 90's characters comes up.) Maybe would have subbed it out for lethal protector.
I'm throwing no shade. Enjoyed the video immensely.
I thought #1 was going to be Death of Superman, Superman#75.
I heve every X book you showed except the Marvel Presents...Xmen #1 signed by Chris Claremont ❤
Wow, I never realized that cable and omega red had just just came out right before they were on the animated series
My favorites in the 90s were Avengers, Heroes For Hire, Fantastic 4 HULK, all Spiderman & Mutant Titles!💣🔥🎯💯📠
this must be"Most important 90's comic in my collection"
7:54 - Thor's half sister huh? Damn man, I've seen the angels in Hazbin Hotel get better treatment XD
J. M. DeMatteis is one of the best and most underrated writers in the history of comics.
I think he was more like the Fred Durst of comics than the Kurt Cobain.
Great list… not sure why Infinity Gauntlet isn’t TOP 5.
👍 Great video! I still own a few good issues and volumes of X-Force and Spawn. Once again, if you need some help with that 'ALL THE COMICS THAT INSPIRED THOR (2011.)' video, be sure to let me know. 👍
OMG OMG OMG! I have watched this video on RUclips with Smoke Wayans and Black Peter Griffin and it was awesome! I love the early '90s comics, Superman, Spider-Man, Venom, Carnage and Batman: The Animated Series! I also love Jack Kirby too! Too bad you didn't mention Dark Horse Comics! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have a lot of these X titles. I saw the comics the other day in my comic box
The way Malibu comics drew women really caught the eye of a kid coming into puberty in thr 90s. That wouldve been me
I just sent to CGC
my X FORCE #11 I bought it
itit 31 years and I got a 9.8. OYES
Thanks for the video
your productuon quality has really gone up
Thanks! Hopefully getting better all the time.
Age of Apocalypse was huge for me
Always a good day when boss man uploads 🙌, one requet though can you please continue the comics that inspired mcu videos? I'm so waiting on ironman 2. Thnx
Thanks! Iron Man 2 vid is coming, it just requires a lot of research 😅 I've also got a few sponsor vids to do and then back to the regular stuff.
I love the original Spider-Man 2099 comics peter david is one of my favorite writers of all time man
Late 80s early 90s is all I collect. I still have most of my collection but want to rebuy my favorites in high grade which is easy cause most are cheap.
❤❤❤❤ Man i luv ur wurk
I got Spawn #1 the reprint one. 😀👍
O brasil esta com josh from panels to pixels
I want to know what books are back there
Get that bag!
I don’t have any of my books graded, but I collected comics heavily in the 90’s. I have the majority of the Marvel and Image comics on your list( some of them in multiple copies [all of my grass- cutting money/allowance] spent to find these books. A lot of, if not most, were collected at release. I would be interested in selling. My kids have no interest in them. I think I have 6 copies of Amazing Spider-Man #362 that I found in a grocery store multi pack of books that once I had discovered their flaw I bought all remaining.
I got Spider-man #1 the silver cover version. 😀👍
Great video. 90s for me was PITT. had too be mentioned 👍👍👍👍👍✊✊✊✊✊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I have all except two. Vengeance of bane and Venom Lethal Protector 1
I got Venom lethal protector #1.😀👍
I got the new mutants #98 deadpool first appearance. 😀👍
Personally for me my favorite 90's comic is spider-girl mayday parker the daughter of peter parker and mary jane who's really awesome and badass in my opinion. :)
I own New Mutants #87 (2nd ed gold), #98 ... X-Force #2 & 11 ... X-Men 1 (varient C) & 4 ... Uncanny X-Men 266 & 282 ... Spawn 1 & 8,9,10,11 ... Infinity Gauntlet #1 (I would've put Silver Surfer #50 as more iconic) .... Venom Lethal Protector #1
I used to own Amazing Spider-Man #289 to 366 and Spider-Man #1 to 26, but "somebody", back then, said "I needed to grow up" -_-
Extreme drinking game. drink every time he laughs.
Please do one of these for the 80's please. If there is one already srry lol
I got Batman: Vengeance of Bane.😀👍
