  • Last time on the "Bringle Ranks Stuff in TTYD" series, I made a tier list of every normal enemy in the game but excluded bosses so they could get their own video! And, well, here is that video...

An NPC in Chapter 4 states that “you can use incredibly powerful magic if nobody knows your name”, and by the time you rematch Doopliss… the party know his name, and so are no longer vulnerable to the magic he uses to steal Mario’s identity. I doubt he’d forget that, so he doesn’t bother using magic robbed of its power.

Great video! Honestly, I was shocked macho Grubba was number one, as I thought he was a good but not fantastic boss fight; however, on my switch playthrough, I completely steamrolled him because he got frozen by the stage effects for almost the whole fight. Also, I think it’s interesting you say your biggest gripe with shadow queen is she doesn’t have as much build up, she doesn’t show up before the very end; I actually think that’s part of why she’s my top choice. I loved the mystery surrounding her, and I think it’s a trope I personally love, seeing an ancient, resurrected evil revealed their final form at the end of the game/movie/book. Overall another fantastic video! I started binging your channel when I was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery, and I love seeing your updates.

So I just realized something. You didn't include the first fight against Crump from the Prologue here in the boss fight rankings. This was a huge missed potential on Nintendo's part, since I think you left it out because it isn't tattle-able since Goombella isn't in your party yet. They 1000% should have used this as a way to introduce the concept of the trash can in Professor Frankly's house. There isn't a tutorial on it anywhere, there's no other fight in the game that forces you to not Tattle, and lets the players organically find out about the concept without shoving it down your throat too much.

If the Grodus fight purposefully capped you at 99 exp so you guaranteed can’t level up going into the Bowser fight. That would help ensure the stakes say high since you won’t get the full heal. And then if you got star points cut off after grodus, they could be added to the total you get after beating Bowser!

Also Grifty reveals Gloomtail & Bonetail as well as the entire 4 Heroes vs Shadow Queen story if you pay for those.

I think his ability to take mario's body has to do with the fact that he knows Mario's name, but Mario didn't know his. This name thing is supported by the fact that to enter twilight town you need something with your name on it. And you can only defeat doopliss once you know his name.

You should try to beat Thousand Year Door with all the bosses and enemies having double HP. I recently beat the game this way and it was a lot of fun. I made a rule that I wasn't allowed to use peril, danger, or power bounce strategies since those would have trivialized the game. I found that Sleepy Stomp was extremely useful since a lot of enemies and even bosses are really weak to sleep

I respect the hell out of you for picking Macho Grubba as the number 1. I always considered him the coolest boss in TTYD because of a number of factors:
    - The whole time playing Chapter 3 for the first time was so suspenseful. Trying to figure out who X was, and more importantly figuring out who the real villain of the story is. You get your victory against Rawk Hawk but so many questions go unanswered and for it to end up being Grubba himself was a really sweet plot twist because he always looked so friendly and fun to talk to. I know he made himself suspicious when you were eavesdropping on him above the ceiling but still. I was genuinely more surprised at the Grubba plot twist than I was the Doopliss one. Although maybe because he resembles Tubba Blubba from Paper Mario, people who started with PM64 could easily tell he was the baddie probably.
    - The fight itself: seeing 60 hp on Grubba was an "oh shit" moment. The highest HP opponent we met before Rawk Hawk was 30 hp (Bowser/Magnus) and since this is the chapter before you get Power Lift, 40 hp was a lot on its own. And then you fight someone with 60 HP, likely completely unprepared too because most people immediately chase after Grubba instead of stocking up on items and whatnot. Not just that but his whole mechanic of buffing his attack or defense then using a number of moves that can do heavy damage to you made the fight genuinely challenging for that stage of the game. Again once you get Power Lift the future bosses (Doopliss, Cortez, even Smorg) are much more manageable. But vs Grubba it
    - The MUSIC. Next to Shadow Queen's final phase, Cortez's theme and Crump's theme, Grubba's boss fight is so intense. It's a mixture of urgency, dread but also conviction. You're taken by surprise at the situation, and are also probably scared after seeing what he did to King K and Bandy Andy, but while I was fighting him and listening to the music for the first time as a kid, all I could think of was "this madness ends now!". The high paced techno beat was awesome. People say they prefer Rawk Hawk's theme but Grubba's theme carried a lot more gravity and tension to it.
    - I don't know why but for some reason I had the impression that despite Grubba being a scumbag, the way he almost respects Mario throughout the fight and considers him a worthy foe, which is probably why I felt that conviction from the music. Yes this was a fight for your life because if you lost Grubba would literally kill you. But it also felt like a glitz pit match, THE glitz pit fight. A one on one (or in the case of your partner - two on one) head on confrontation. This was further compounded when he said things like, "Not too shabby, Gonzales. You got showmanship, an' that's GOLD in this biz. But this here's battle's just gettin started! It's time I showed you some real moves!" Almost like Grubba was treating this not as a deathmatch but, like I said, a glitz pit fight. And then later when he said "I ain't finished yet, Gonzales!!! Ain't over 'til it's over! That's the way it goes in combat sports, son!" Again it felt like he almost respected as an opponent. There's no trash talk like him saying "pfft you're so weak you're not even worth the effort" the way Rawk Hawk was treating Mario. Grubba was complimenting Mario, acknowledging his strength while at the same time staying confident in his own abilities. Even at the end when he loses he said "Oh... Great... Gonzales... Great fight, there, son. Great... fight." He had a sense of sportsmanship and honor in battle, which is ironic considering how dishonorable his actions prior to the fight were. I couldn't help but respect the guy in return.
I just love that fight so much. A perfect level of challenge and difficulty, and the events building up to it all were just so suspenseful.

Just a thing about Shadow Queen. I've just finished my second ever playthrough (GC version) and I honestly don't think she's as insanely difficult as people say. Yes, she's a nightmare for a first time player but with a good offensive strategy (power plus P x 2, Yoshi, P-Up D-Down P, Power Plus, Jumpman, All or Nothing), you can destroy her pretty quick (or even cheese her in the case of speed runs), in which case her difficulty is more comparable to that of final Bowser from Paper Mario 1. In fact, I'd argue that Paper Mario 1's final boss is harder in a way, as the AI is incredibly smart such that there is no way to cheese it, meaning it can even give some of the greatest speed runners difficulty. In particular, the fact Bowser can heal 30HP up to 3 times is a big set back but as for Shadow Queen, as long as you keep destroying her hands, she'll never heal!
