Completely agree .. and there is nothing to be ashamed of it , a lot of Bengali literature and culture is comparatively modern and may be a by product of the east India company setting base in Calcutta. But being old is not always being better .. Bihar (Magadha) has a culture dating back from 200 BC. The US history begins from the 1700s. Where would you rather live today ?
Hey Ashamed Bengalis, you don't know your glorious real history. This uneducated guy speaks shit. Please first educate yourself & get some knowledge about Bengal's history. You don't have the slightest knowledge of the history of Bengal but are speaking like a foolish. If he had studied at least, he would have known that the history of Bengal is 5000 years old according to the evidence obtained so far. In Mahabharata, it's clearly mentioned as the Vanga kingdom ruled by the Great King Samudra Sen & Chandra Sen. A Chalcolithic-era civilization has been found in the "Pandu Raja's mound" area in contemporary Bengal of the Harappan civilization. Who does not know about the ancient Gangaridai civilization (4000 years old)? Kindly google it. Many Greek-Roman historians have written about the ancient Gangaridai Empire in Bengal. Everyone knows about the wonderful war tactics of this Gangal people. The first king of Sri Lanka , Vijaya Singha was the prince of Vanga (Bengal) who conquered Lanka with just 700 soldiers. Google please. 😊 Bengal's civilization from Gauda Empire, Maharaja Shashanka to Pala period and Sen period. All the Buddhist monasteries like Vikramshila, Odantapuri, Jagjivanpur etc. were built by Bengalis in the Pala period. And Bengali literature made in the British era? WTH .. The oldest known specimen of Bengali language ever discovered is the "Charyapada", composed in the Pala period. @@Rabindra_ Well said. Issue is Sir, our Bharatiyas need to be "reminded" time and again they are an ancient civilization and our ideals are on a different horizon and plane of reality altogether. To understand the "liberalism" concept one must go into roots of western (European) civilization. "Liberalism" in western context sprung from being "freed of 'religious' ideologies" commonly associated with oppression of common people on the pretext of religion and politics derived from it. In Bharat things are completely different and nowhere related to the western concepts. Here there is 'no religion'. It is "Dharma" { Duty, righteousness, staying with limits - respectfulness (maryada), protecting the weak etc.} which means everything in the positive. Dharma goes hand in hand with day to day life and hence there is no "politics" that can be derived off it except the righteous manner to perform tasks which is environmentally viable. The "Natural code" is our tradition ! Each concept in our books resounds the practicality of nature and nothing artificially created to suppress people, which is freedom in life.

Abhinav and Abhijeet, please have a discussion on 1975 Emergency in India and discuss the 5 point program of Sanjay Gandhi. It is essential to understand how dictatorship would have functioned in India. All we know opposition leaders were jailed and newspapers banned. And sad part is leaders and newspapers only talk about these two aspects, not the rest.
While I've enjoyed and learnt from many of the earlier discussions on this platform (including those of Abhijit Iyer), this clearly wasn't an enlightening one. References to history was obfuscating and probably lacked a logical link to the present. I'm no expert in matters of history, polity or international relations, but I think there are more dimensions required for such topics. Also, the discussion should probably move past a liberal democracy to participatory democracy and maybe a change in electoral system as well. PS: This is not meant to disparage anyone.
While I like bashing Indian trads but AIM's comment on Indian forces running away isn't really just Indian thing. Doesn't it happen everywhere during the age of empires. The state was King and the king was state. Applies to everyone around the world.

Duke of Willingdon who defeated Napoleaon said Marthas were way advanced in tech and more powerful enemies than Napoeon. Even in current times if any army commander loses it difficult to the cadre to fight but now they do as times changed. And India overruling other countries point also does not that much sesne. Why guptas need to conquer the world when they got most of things were here. Cholas conquered Sri lanka. if they wanted to rule they would have probably. I don't think liberal or conservative (ideology) matters much when you have extractive institutions, efficiency of Indian institutions are still individuals driven, if good man(like shridhran, t n sheshan, etc ) is heading our institutions then they perform well , else they do what they are great at (which is economical extraction). We need inclusive institutions (ideologies are secondary and non primordial thing)
51:30 There is so much conflation and sweeping generalisations here. On the point of invasion, sure there is that point of how many times were we even capable of invading others. But that doesn't take away from the fact that expansionism, especially of the nature we see in the abrahamic/western world, the religious/territorial conquest of a completely foriegn culture by a top down aristocracy, was never a part of the cultural/religious values of most cultures and regimes within India. This is also evident with the way Buddhism expanded outside of India, which wasn't through conquest. This is bcz one, hinduism/dharmic sects for the most part, aren't top down, they are decentralised and infocused, and they are very sectorial as well. The dharmic pacifism being two. Now whether or not they should have expanded is a different topic. But making comparisons and definitive assumptions about civilizations just based on events and data without taking into account the cultural principles and philosophies at play during the time isn't very wise. "Just like saying hindus are tolerant, they are tolerant bcz they are too weak to oppose or too indifferent to oppose." Again, a conflation of two separate things. It is true the fact of hiding cowardice under the garb of morality accurately applies to hindus. It is probably truer for hindus than for any other community in the world, especially in the last millennium and definitely in contemporary India. BUT, it doesn't take away from the genuine staggering religious tolerance that we have witnessed here, compared to anywhere else in the world. The indifference comes from the infocused nature of hinduism, which aids in tolerance and bringing about diversity, but a stunted form of which imo also leads to apathy and indifference towards injustice/wrongs/lack. With the very existence of sects like jainism and especially buddhism, if you know the history of its creation, its really a cheap undersell to suggest that tolerance exists ONLY as a consequence of weakness and indifference, not something that was intended. Such reductive arguments don't really help when done from either side.

As a Bengali, the point about Bengali culture is absolutely correct.
Are u sure of it this is case? Bcoz ppl like AIM would have least knowledge of Bengali literature but loves to pass uninformed comments on it.
Bengal's civilization from Gauda Empire, Maharaja Shashanka to Pala period and Sen period.
Read about the poem "Gitagovinda" written by Joydev, the poet of Sen Rajsabha, "Annadamangal" by Mukundaram Chakraborty, the poem by Bharat Chandra Roy (16th century)

It is essential to understand how dictatorship would have functioned in India. All we know opposition leaders were jailed and newspapers banned. And sad part is leaders and newspapers only talk about these two aspects, not the rest.
Excellent discussion.

Even in current times if any army commander loses it difficult to the cadre to fight but now they do as times changed.

I think the idea of a Hindu rastra is perfect for India. It's going back to grass roots and making all the things that are wrong now correct.
Abhijit ayer mitra how is this name, I am bengali and mitra is a bengali surname while iyer is a south indian surname, is he bengali or south indian?
