Calling Sanskrit old and rudimentary langauge and using example of 0 and 1 is such a false equivalence. Sanskrit has complex grammar, advance and huge literature and historical significance. Just because it is language of the past doesn't mean it was poor language. I like and respect Abhijit and I follow him but I don't think language and culture is his area of expertise. Yes you can blame government for focusing on sanskrit rather than doing development in other areas but why so be biased towards our culture and language? He gave examples of other civilizations where he stated China and Russia don't aspire to become dynasties of the past but at the same time China and Russia don't speak other cultures' language, don't change eating habits, don't distance themselves from where they came from. Indians have tendency to hate the culture and follow western civilization. I think government only wants to change this view of people and hence love towards sanskrit and ayurveda etc. Of course, glory of the past doesn't give us excuse to not doing anything in present.

It is true that we must see our global leadership in the future, not the past. But at the same time, we must not allow our (or the world's) past to be captured by the West. That'll allow them to claim total equity in our future too (regardless of our success/failure). That'll be the great & final defeat of our civilization - that they successfully forced us to abandon our roots & assimilate into the Euro-centric consensus.
Our task hence, is two-fold - reclaim our historical heritage, while cultivating a fresh vision for the future (of ourselves AND the world at large). Neither is less important than the other.
With a nation of 1.4 billion people, why can't we do both parallelly? Prioritize one over the other at your own peril.

In fact narratives of history has very little to do with contemporary power dynamic. Look at Japan, it embraced its new image post WW2 and carved itself out to be a major global player, even though it had remained isolated all throughout history. History is important but for awareness of possible pitfalls, it cannot be a total guide to the future. If going ahead we need to shed aspects of our history when we are getting a better deal, we must be willing to do so.
