It's fucking awesome hearing a legend, a pioneer and a talent like Chuck Schuldiner give props to Anvil in the same sentence with Metallica, Mercyful Fate etc. People often discount Anvil and their earlier, heavier stuff too quickly. Rest in peace Chuck. Cancer sucks!
Chuck just wanted to be a "Metalhead" no extra bullshit. He just named his major influences .Metallica KD Venom, koo but without Chuck Shuldiner.. There is no Cannibal,Deicide,Sepultura Suffocation,Meshuggah,Pantera etc. Little did he know how important he was to us RIP
+Emil Niphelsson : Remember, for chronologging musical evolution, in this case death metal, you should start counting at the earliest demo's, meaning Mantas - Death by metal from 1983. Chuck was heavily spreading his tapes around the world, also corresponding with Max Cavalera.
Actually if I understand Chuck correctly, he would clasify bands like Cannibal Corpse as parody of the genre and the direction musicans composing Death metal lyrics should abandon. But don't get me wrong, I often find CC silly and over-grotesque, but i still like them. Fuck with a knife is a classic on Its own :D. bands like that are cool, but I can't take them too serious :p
"I see reality". Chuck, you will live forever through your lyrics, your words and your wisdom. We all can learn from you, regardless the types of music we like. Chuck, You will live forever. Rest in Peace.
Today (5/13/2017) would have been his 50th Birthday. Still sad that he's gone, but glad that he made outstanding music that will live on. Happy Birthday, Chuck! Cheers!
At that time no one truly knew how important and inspirational he would become over the next several years. He is honest and humble and probably didn't see himself as becoming an icon. However he left his mark for musicians of this genre and beyond, and words cannot express his legacy.
apart from all his humble acts, the way he narrated his belief towards demons, then no hatred or conflict towards any religion.. I sometimes wonder what was he a man or an angel,a huge blessing to the world history
robert henderson I'm catholic and I LOVE death, but hell your comment has some truth.... I have had people from church call me satanic and stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Watching him makes me tear up! He's so honest and good minded.... Doesn't give self importance, I love him so much.... One day death will take me to him.... Chuck the godfather of death metal
Your outlook and the things you're saying I can completely relate to. Sometimes it sets a theme when you use certain words, which create a world that you are trying to conjure within the listeners mind. But I agree, it's much better to also write about reality. We are a world with real problems, and speaking out about them is what helps along the change. Create music that will unlock potential and not stifle it, as is the case with many lyrical styles. Thank you for all the beautiful music
all those people passing by a living legend without realising it. I feel lucky for having lived on the same planet, in the same era of Chuck Schuldiner.
Both Chuck (with Mantas) and Possessed started in 1983 and both were recording demo's in 1984. Possessed made up the name, but played thrash death, not pure death metal (check the description link where they state this). Chuck def took inspiration from them also, but did much more in forging solid death metal. He also continuously 'raised' the music to new territory. He 'parted' with lacking bandmembers and spreaded the message of metal to be a united brothers thing almost like family rethoric. I see resemblance to The Godfather movies.
+TheReincarnatedDeath Possessed is really thrashy, first wave death metal, (naturally, since dm evolved from thrash) and they werent the only ones doing it. I believe it was actually Seven Churches that inspired Chuck to form Death. Ik there's an interview somewhere where he gives them credit. Poison from Germany were also recording songs as early as 82/83. Check out "Into the Abyss" the uploader says it came out in 86 but it's a compilation of material they recorded in the time frame I mentioned before.
Chuck changed Mantas to Death in 1984. Seven Churches came out in 1985 so it's not that album. I think you should look at the demo's, spreaded through tapetrading rather than who got a record deal first. There is a Mantas logo with the Possessed tail in it. The Death by metal title sounds like a variation on the Death metal demo. And of course the first word in death metal is the archetypical word Death. As youngsters they decided naming stuff quite impulsively. Like Chris Reifert after leaving Death literally thought: What comes after death? Autopsy! Thus another bandname was born. But apart from naming stuff, musically Chuck was much more moved away from thrash to pure death metal than Possessed. Remember that he was also influenced by playing with Slaughter, Genocide/Repulsion & Massacre guys plus Reifert. I don't know if the German Poison had any developing influence back then in the tapetrading community. Haven't seen any signals of that. I think they were mostly copying Hellhammer back than.
TheReincarnatedDeath Then it was the demos and not Seven Churches, I wasnt sure. But he was definitely inspired by them. It may be thrashy but SBG is a second rate Seven Churches. Sepultura was also doing stuff around that time. My point is, is that Death wasnt the first and trying to find the first dm band is like trying to find the first human
I heard these guys years ago and I thought they were cool but only recently have I properly got into them and man one of the most talented fucking bands I've ever heard it really is a shame chuck was taken away so soon. RIP Chuck.
Tbh with you mate and speaking as a guitarist myself I think a lot of Deaths stuff is quite technical and way ahead of its time and the fact chuck could roar and play the way he did simultaneously is nothing short of impressive! Voice of the Soul is a killer emotional ride and again his compositional skills in that are technical to a high standard! I can honestly say I have never heard a band like Death in my life!
+kiarash bakhtiari after '...and justice for all'? put a decent production on ' and justice for all' and you've basically got the 'black' album. there's only 2, maybe 3, thrash songs on the album.
ah. fuck off PAC of death metal? you comparing a guy who makes music to a gut who rhythmically talk on a music tune ? not disrespecting your taste( which I completely think is bad) but cmon.
This is the Godfather of metal. He invented it. Don't care what he says. Listen to scream bloody gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual healing. Classic heaviness.
+Beyonce Knowles Again, you should count chronologically through the demo's. Back then, getting a record deal was not so easy as it became later, so the first band getting a deal and an album out, doesn't count as being the first to start this musical style.
TimberWolvesX X Schuldiner is German for 'School diner'. His music is scholing material and he was also a cook: www.emptywords.org/MetalCrusadevol1no3.htm (DEATH in the kitchen) ;)
I'd say it most of the time depends on the musical death metal style. If it's more simplistic brutal death metal, so are the lyrics: brutal. Back in the day when horror films became available on video, lyrics were mostly horror stories or Venom-esque Satanic. I also see a lot of history-inspired brutal lyrics. If it's technical death metal, the lyrics tend to become more sophisticated, complimenting the music. In both styles, there is a world of bands to discover, also inspired by Death.
chuck knew exactly what was going on at the time. Then he acts like he didnt invent the thing. Very humble person. Miss u man!!
Fernando Ramoa Well said...Chuck was very humble and just a regular guy. Such a talented musician...a master. So sad he is gone.
Funny how sometimes the kindest people can sound the most terrifying
All these people walking by.... Not realizing they are passing a legend who's life ended way too soon.
Chuck was such a modest, nice guy.
He was THE PHILOSOPHER, whose VOICE OF THE SOUL will forever encompass the COSMIC SEA.
Happy 50th Birthday, Chuck! Cheers!

100% true and could not have said it better
Sepultura made two amazing death metal-records before Scream Bloody Gore or the Mutilation-demo was even out.
I agree with a lot of this comment, but Pantera would more than likely be what it was without Death.
+Emil Niphelsson : Remember, for chronologging musical evolution, in this case death metal, you should start counting at the earliest demo's, meaning Mantas - Death by metal from 1983. Chuck was heavily spreading his tapes around the world, also corresponding with Max Cavalera.

Chuck I just want to thank you for all your awesome music. You are a huge reason why I picked up the guitar. You are a legend forever. RIP.
He'll never see this.
wafflcoptr He doesn't need to as long as we keep his legacy alive Chuck will live on forever.. \m/
+Dread nought I know I just like to fuck with people.
amen brother. chuck my reason and also inspiration for learning guitar. Taken from us to soon but never forgotten. Respect and thanks forever.
"I see reality". Chuck, you will live forever through your lyrics, your words and your wisdom. We all can learn from you, regardless the types of music we like. Chuck, You will live forever. Rest in Peace.
Chuck is incorrect. He is the inventor of death metal. But, I admire him being humble about it.
I totally agree with that statement . you are on point all the way
Today (5/13/2017) would have been his 50th Birthday.
Still sad that he's gone, but glad that he made outstanding music that will live on.
Happy Birthday, Chuck! Cheers!
Guy at 0:24 in the background was prob like "Is that Chuck?"
+slantyrock lol
also at 2:21 she's like oh shit it's evil chuck heheheh
goodnight sweet prince

R.I.P Chuck!! The Metal needs more guys like you \,,/
"That's idiotioc... that's putting a limit in people's mentality"
Death = best lyrics!!
best comment ever!lol
truth in his quote. the catholics and organized religion is all about limiting peoples minds to have domination over the masses for their evil gain
robert henderson I'm catholic and I LOVE death, but hell your comment has some truth.... I have had people from church call me satanic and stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@mishellvite2708dont be catholic those are not words of god.
in my opinion, "pleassure to kill" from kreator was HUGE influence to death metal. just listen to it, it´s so brutal!!
jfpbman I love the part where the demon says it! \m/
Chuck wouldve been 57 today, i can't believe he's really gone, miss u!
Great mind, a man who really made a difference in what concerns to lyrics in death metal!
+Juliana de Castro Ye, fucking love their lyrics
Chuck Schuldiner - THE PHILOSOPHER whose VOICE OF THE SOUL will forever encompass the COSMIC SEA.
Happy 50th Birthday, Chuck! Cheers!

A true legend of metal...Let the Metal Flow!
I had this Vid !!! Chuck is the one person I greatly miss and never met.
Blesses to him.
Chuck was a badass dude R.I.P
i can't describe with words the amount of respect i feel for this man, he was a true man and artist
I've only been listening to Death for a few months but this man has already had such a big impact on me and my tastes in music! ROCK IN PEACE!
"I see reality." - Chuck Schuldiner
"Through dreams, I obtain the ability to connect sight with sound..."
Thanks for posting this. Interesting stuff and it's always great to watch Chuck's interviews.
I have to hold back tears when I listen to Death, or when I watch these interviews. Chuck Schuldiner is one of my greatest heroes.
I love hearing Chuck talk about anything! Such a down to earth person he was and very sincere individual. Let the Metal Flow!
Watching him makes me tear up! He's so honest and good minded.... Doesn't give self importance, I love him so much.... One day death will take me to him.... Chuck the godfather of death metal
Somewhere up there jamming together is chuck, dimebag, cliff burton and nick menza
And Randy Rhoads!

Chuck was such a good person. And he actually puts meaning into lyrics
all those people passing by a living legend without realising it.
I feel lucky for having lived on the same planet, in the same era of Chuck Schuldiner.
kind of interesting to see all these late 80's/early 90's people walking around
"Godfather of death metal" Nevermind that Possessed came first and Chuck gave them credit.

IMO Seven Churches is definitely a dm album
You don't know life until you know death... Rip Chuck Shuldnier
Remember when Death went touring without him during Spiritual Healing. Thats was odd. They did it because Chuck was too much a gentleman.
It's so funny that he talks nothing like he sounds when singing those scary death vocals.
Why is it always the greatest musicians who die young
Personally I like fantasy more than reality lyrics, but Death still used imagery and sounds that provoked feelings of escapism, they never lost that.
All these people passing by, not realizing they're walking next to a God.
Chuck will live forever. So Greatly missed. Nobody like him.
Rest in peace, Chuck.
DEATH had one of the best bass players in the history of mankind,
STEVE DEGEORGIO. The master of the fretless bass. 🤘
rest in rip sweet prince 😢
What a nice guy. We miss you Chuck.
How can someone with a calm voice sound si satanic on stage is beyond me but hell, if its good music i dig it. RIP Chuck, may your memory remain.
he said Satan and the dude just turns and looks at him like wtf ? 2:56
R.I.P. Chuck, a true genius.
Rip Chuck and Lemmy
Awesome. Great classic footage. Important gem. RIP, Chuck Schuldiner. The guitar genius. Definitely a true pioneer.
His lyrics are the legendary
Happy birthday Chuck!!!
(R.I.P.) "Chuck Schuldiner"
обожаю твою музыку,Чак. люблю ее. всем сердцем. Чак всегда с нами и в наших сердцах. светлая память тебе.спасибо за твою музыку.
There's a certain irony in what he is saying regarding reality and limiting people's mentalities. Wouldn't expect Chuck fan boys to see that though.
The godfather of death metal sounds so relaxed that he seems to be stoned.
Now that, is breaking stereotypes.
RIP chuck .
I heard these guys years ago and I thought they were cool but only recently have I properly got into them and man one of the most talented fucking bands I've ever heard it really is a shame chuck was taken away so soon. RIP Chuck.

00:35 Metallica "when they first came out" even chuck knew Metallica started to suck after And justice for all

+prettyjohnshill76 Justice is fucking amazing you sit the fuck down
omginvalid anything you say gamer nerd. i'll bet you weren't even born when '..and justice for all' came out.
prettyjohnshill76
gamer nerd? and what does age matter? You think the heaviest album is shit you can fuck off lol
very humble this guy
definately the Pac of DM. what a great guy. always happy to share his individual thought patterns!
ah. fuck off PAC of death metal? you comparing a guy who makes music to a gut who rhythmically talk on a music tune ? not disrespecting your taste( which I completely think is bad) but cmon.

Don john nothing to do with the music. I mean as a person. I am a dm fan . Cant stand rap to be honest with you.
Pac is the Chuck of Rap, get it straight
Schuldiner, Burton, and Menza would be a great 3 piece band of dead guys.
POSSESSED
Chuck was a real ass dude
this guy was the most amazing metal songwriter and guitar extreme player, Is a legend!
Chuck is such a humble man.
Mr Schuldiner speaks the truth!!!
Chuck Schuldiner and Kirk Hammett would be a great team.
Death metal doc. brought me here!
brilliant upload!!!!!!!!
This was definitely in England!
It was at Bradford ?
CHUCK IS THE FUCKING MAN!
This is the Godfather of metal. He invented it. Don't care what he says. Listen to scream bloody gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual healing. Classic heaviness.
Godfather of death metal? Yes. Godfather of metal? No. There were metal bands before Death.
There were tons of bands before death. There were death metal albums and demos before it too.
+CraziDude1 It's a typo. He meant death metal.
+Beyonce Knowles Again, you should count chronologically through the demo's. Back then, getting a record deal was not so easy as it became later, so the first band getting a deal and an album out, doesn't count as being the first to start this musical style.
TheReincarnatedDeath I honestly don't care any more. I didn't even know this comment chain existed.
Puro metal puro talento y pura humildad.
Legend and great person. never forgotten.
