The V30's are in fact more efficient than the T75's with 100 db/w/m vs 97. I doubt they are louder though, since the 75 in G12-T75 stands for 75 watts of power handling vs the 60 Watts of the Vintage 30.

I was living in Florida at the time this music took off. A lot of guitarist were using 3 distortion pedals with the gain all the way up. Man, that was such a good tone, every note sounded perfect and the fundamental pitch of each note was indistinguishable. This made it unnecessary to learn anything on the guitar because the tone was soooo GOOD that it did not matter what notes were played. Symbolic is such a massive album! I was shocked when Chuck passed away, Death has been a big part of my early metal years. Thanks for making your videos, Ola! \m/
Hi Ola. If you get the chance, try the original Marshall 8100 Valvestate. IMO they sound way better than later models. Plus, i believe they were the specific model used by Sir Chuck Schooldinners, RIP.
@@qffgodoy same thing Eddie Van Halen had in his or somebody used those same exact pickups I was going to say maybe Dimebag but I forgot he used a Bill Lawrence pickup
My parents got me one of these second hand when I was about 14 for about $200. I always used to crank and it think "fuck that sounds a bit like chuck” - now 14 years later i know why lmao. I've always loved this amp.
I love the Valvestate 8100, I've had one for many years, one of my favorite Marshall heads (Including my JCM 800 Lead & JCM 900 Dual Reverb), killer metal tones for days, swap a late 70's late production Sylvania NOS 12ax7 into one of them (if you can find one...), they have KILLER ton and harmonics for days, I run mine through a Marshall 1960a slant 4x12 with V30s, killler, big ups Ola!
Marshall "Valvestate 100V" head with a 1960 cab. If you want to kick it up a notch, add a BBE Sonic Stomp, Amptweaker Depthfinder, or an Xotic EP Booster into the effects loop.
A friend of mine had a Valvestate in those days, and he was constantly hunting for a better rhythm sound. What he ended up with was an overdrive pedal, used as a clean boost, into a distortion pedal, going into the front of the amp. He would take that clean boosted signal out of the overdrive pedal, the distortion pedal would provide about half of the distortion on his signal, and the valve state would provide the other half of the distortion on his signal. It ended up sounding pretty damn nice for back in those days.
If you go to Arnold plays guitars, he did a review on this and said that the nut was terrible on this guitar but everything else was great. His review on the guitar is very detailed.
Good stuff brother. I met Chuck at the old Peabodies in Cleveland, Ohio in 95. Got to hang out for an hour or so upstairs of the now non existent venue. Chuck was so very humble..talking life and music. Ill never forget the experience. I have an old Valvestate from the early 90's. still works..barely..lol. I also have a signed flyer by chuck..which i laminated for preservation...which im glad i did. I think you got really close to the Symbolic sound. I enjoyed this video. Cheerz!!! \,,/ R.I.P. Chuck
There is a picture from an old Metal Maniacs magazine from the recording sessions from The Sound of Perseverance in which you can see a Boss Super Overdrive. I assume Chuck used that in the studio and live. I also owned this very amp in 2000, and with an overdrive in front, the thing sounded amazing, but it broke down and was never permanently fixed. Dialed in right, it sounds wicked. Although the tone Ola achieved was, in my opinion, not very indicative of the Symbolic album, or Death in general, the fact that he did a video about the great Chuck and Death really means a lot to Death fans out there. Chuck was a true original, he hated trends and fashion, and is my guitar hero. If he were alive today and saw this video, I'm sure he would be smiling and very pleased with it. Thank you, Ola, that was very cool.
Ugh, and they went out on such a high note. Those Once Loyal is just a beautiful record. Wish they were still around because I'm curious to see where they could take that brutally heavy yet insanely melodic style.
Sausage Fingers yeah, i think TOL was one of their best records, IF not the best. Most of metal bands 2000's albums are nothing compared to their golden age, BT was the exception to that rule
Bolt thrower is one of the greatest. Musically they are very mid tempo, Grindy, and repetitive with their riffs but they have a way of always keeping it interesting. I never get bored listening to bolt thrower. WARMASTER
I had one of this back in the 90s. I then thought that it was a fine piece of gear. 20 years later I would gladly buy one used. I think that boosted gave a great tone!
I would not be surprised if they did that. At the time the groups were experimenting much more than now. Today we want to respect the signal to have a big master level.
The tone was definitely in Chucks hands, Only Chuck could make a valve state sound bad ass. That amp is Marshalls unwanted step child! The x2n definitely helped. I love that pickup.
I myself have owned that same Valvestate for a while and clean are the key to a good sound from it. Using clean boosts along with actives on the rhythm channel make another lead channel without that scooped sound. Might be a little noisy but nothing that a gate can't fix.
I bought a combo Marshall Valvestate used at GC for $85. I was thinking it was a solid state (because I'm a dumbass) but when I started playing Symbolic songs, I was blown away how it nails the symbolic tone. Then someone informed me that is what Chuck used. You throw a touch chorus on there to clean it up and it is beautiful.
I truly believe that a manufacturer must take hold of stealth and for sure Iron bird and warlock from B.C.Rich guitars which is dead completely these days.
sam amo aside from this stealth I laugh when I see people playing bc rich. They’re not the best guitars. Definitely beginner and mediocre at best. The only reason I’d get this one would obviously be to play death and get that chuck feel when playing. Other than that, I’d never touch a bc rich.
Indeed, bc rich is dead r.i.p but it's an iconic brand that left it's mark in the 80' s and 90's metal scene even Thin Lizzy and Slash used ' em..back when they would put out quality stuff...imports and usa customs...to bad they went downhill...but the latest Nj deluxe series were pretty good for their price.
there's no doubt B.C.Rich made out of stats is not an outstanding peace of gear. But the ones known as handcrafted "R" series are totally an exception.
The Wampler would be a great way to go. I might also ad a tube screamer and a noise gate in the chain as well. And you'd run through the return of the FX loop to bypass the preamp of whatever you were running into. This way the amp is just used for its power section. I've found that running a multi-f2f board though a return of the FX loop is the way to go. Or just get a 1,000 watt power amp like a Crown XLS as they don't weigh anything and run it that way. Whatever money you had over spend on a decent cabinet.
I am lucky enough to own that very axe, signatured - ( such an amazing shape, like it's biomechanical ... and of course a reverse headstock is a must ) Chuck is my musical God and his albums, my Bible. I miss him so much ... but I like to think he wasn't taken from us, so much as he was needed elsewhere. Blesses, Brother 😔🙏🤍 We'll meet again someday 🙏🤍 I super happy you gave him a video, thank you, we must never forget such a legend and pioneer of music.
I still have a complete set (head and cab). I've had it for 23 years now. Honestly they are not bad. I now play on smaller tube amps, mostly, but this top/head still has good tones. It takes pedals well, in front, and in the loop. Good budget amp for those looking for a big sound for small price. Chuck made them shred like no one else...
Oh... I forgot.. A locking nut is pretty much mandatory on the Stealth as you found out with the tuning issues. In lieu of this the little string 'trees' or a tension bar behind the nut, which will increase the angle the string path follows does wonders in the tuning stability dept. Not sure the reason Chuck designed his signature axe with so minimal an angle to the head stock, oddly enough, the Satriani signature Ibanez headstock is almost flatly, exactly the same. Maybe it makes string bends easier or something ?
Yeah, in general doing "thisguy"'s tone with always the same hesu cab isn't the "right" thing to do. Cabs+mic+placement is what makes most of a recorded guitar sound. That's why ola's videos or anyone that uses the same cab/mic for everything sound similar no matter the amp/guitar. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, and getting plenty of different cabs just to do x's tone is really inconvenient. And that hesu sounds so good.
I've owned that amp for a while and learned that if you want it to sound like a real Marshall you need to have a OD boost in the front end and set the gain and level to about half way. I use a TC Electronics Dark Matter with the gain no more than half way and the level no less than halfway and it really improves the sound of the amp dramatically.
I played thru a very similar setup in the '90's. My setup was simple. Original Valvestate 8100 with a quality replacement tube, BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop, original Tube Screamer. I pushed it at 100% into a full stack. Slant stack was fairly standard but the bottom cab was 4x12 200 watt Carvin bass speakers. I tuned down to drop D and I had the most crushing tone you could ever imagine. No one ever knew what hit them and I'd always catch the guitarists from other bands looking at my setup as they could not figure out how a shitty solid state amp was crushing their tone and making them look like little gurls. :) Excellent show btw.
My old band mate had this amp in the 90’s but he never used the amps gain channel but instead used the digitech rp1 through the clean channel (those models were great in their time) and it sounded amazing.
amazing how he kind of owned that sound....he got by on his talent alone....but it was a different time....you can only imagine him with modern amps what he would have done....rip chuck
I think it is still grainy somehow. Just guessing, but does it have anything to do with the fact that you don't have the same Valvestate head that Death had back in the day? It was the 8100. I have it and it is richer in harmonics, has a flatter, drier sound ->pretty much like Death. Get a 8100 ;-))
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 The diferences are not huge, but they are not the same Amp. Period. Just compare the schmatics. And if I recall correctly, the VS100 uses the tube in both channels, while the 8100 only uses it in the distortion channel, but not in the clean.
Chuck used a model 8100 valvestate, I own one and it sounds better than the vs100 model, still a pretty scooped sound though especially when u turn up the contour, might have to switch out the preamp tube and see if that changes anything

Haha love how the bleeps when you cuss is the sound effect from Legend Of Zelda when you find something in the game and pick it up over your head as Link lol
Yes! Symbolic is my favourite Death album! Sold my Stealth a few months ago since it was way to neck heavy, the action was high despite the bridge being as low as possible, it would not stay in tune and the scale was too short for proper string tension, even with 10-52. :/
Yeah, that would have been an option, but I don't like how such thick strings play and feel. 52 is the largest gauge that I like and it works well on 25.5'' in D. I've put 10-52 on my Stealth, tuned to D. This is also the gauge Chuck used, from what I read.
The chorus on the album is actually from the amp, it’s a built-in feature. Ola doesn’t have the exact amp he uses, Chuck actually used the 8100 model, but I don’t blame him because the 8100 model is very difficult to find.
I found a VS412 cab locally on Craigslist, there's a veterans charity that sells donated used gear and uses the cash to buy guitars for vets. Most of my family are vets so I donated $100 and the guy showed up and gave me a Crate GT1200H head w/footswitch and the Marshall cab. I was pretty stoked because I knew that was the "Death Cab" and I've been running it with my 50W EVH 5153. At first I couldn't get the sound I wanted but after I while I figured out how to make those Celestion G12L-35 speakers pop, takes a bit of EQ tweakery and now it's my favorite cab. It actually cuts the fizziness you get with a high-gain head and my amp was already dialed-in to do that so it sounded butt at first. Anyway the ValveState gear is pretty frickin awesome, I've owned several of the 212 combos and was pretty impressed. Great option if you're just starting out and need some decent gear to gig with.

It's a great amp but it's not for everyone. It's a thin sound but it cuts through a dense mix! They sound best with a Boss ge7 boosting the mids along with a noisegate. The X2N is a hot pickup but it has the best split sound I've ever heard.
Well I tried my best, you might see that I wasn't fully comfortable with this sound. But anyway SUBSCRIBE because tits.

Remixing those records is useless because the sounds was perfect.
The death Tone Was awesome, mustaine next please, rust in peace ✌️
you mean CHRIS POLAND
He used a bogner fish preamp for rust in peace tone (hard to find it today and expensive), and seymour duncan jb 59 pickup in bridge position
@War Zone good 1 borezone
@@qffgodoy same thing Eddie Van Halen had in his or somebody used those same exact pickups I was going to say maybe Dimebag but I forgot he used a Bill Lawrence pickup

That's cause Paul Masvidal is a genius.
Robinson Aquino why are you SHOUTING
"Human" is one of bests metal albuns ever!
My parents got me one of these second hand when I was about 14 for about $200. I always used to crank and it think "fuck that sounds a bit like chuck” - now 14 years later i know why lmao. I've always loved this amp.
I still want one
I love the Valvestate 8100, I've had one for many years, one of my favorite Marshall heads (Including my JCM 800 Lead & JCM 900 Dual Reverb), killer metal tones for days, swap a late 70's late production Sylvania NOS 12ax7 into one of them (if you can find one...), they have KILLER ton and harmonics for days, I run mine through a Marshall 1960a slant 4x12 with V30s, killler, big ups Ola!
@nkogliaz which version sylvania and or part number?? theres like 10 different kinds on ebay right now lol
Answer the man! 🤣
What about the guitar tone on Sound of Perseverance?
Is practically the same from Human till TSOP
Marshall "Valvestate 100V" head with a 1960 cab. If you want to kick it up a notch, add a BBE Sonic Stomp, Amptweaker Depthfinder, or an Xotic EP Booster into the effects loop.

Hell ya
A friend of mine had a Valvestate in those days, and he was constantly hunting for a better rhythm sound. What he ended up with was an overdrive pedal, used as a clean boost, into a distortion pedal, going into the front of the amp. He would take that clean boosted signal out of the overdrive pedal, the distortion pedal would provide about half of the distortion on his signal, and the valve state would provide the other half of the distortion on his signal. It ended up sounding pretty damn nice for back in those days.
One of the most humble and sweet guys to ever come from metal.

Yesssss. Grew up on DEATH. Spiritual Healing was one of my favorites. RIP Chuck.
Man the ringing from the nut to tuners is insanely loud on that guitar
If you go to Arnold plays guitars, he did a review on this and said that the nut was terrible on this guitar but everything else was great. His review on the guitar is very detailed.
He says every nut is terrible...
Its a BCR thing. My Warlock is like that.
Thanks for paying tribute to one of My guitar heros, Chuck schuldiner! He's such a perfectionist! R.I.P. Chuck thanks for the wonderful music...
Cheerz!!! \,,/
Can you do a tonevideo about Bolt Thrower, the underrated british dm god?
Ya bolttrower, they ruled back in the day!, W a spot light on Jo Bench, the gorgeous female bass player!
Bolt thrower have some of the best rithm guitar riffs ever, really nice mid tempo grooves. Criminally underrated
R.I.P Chuck, one of my fav bands. he will be missed. thank you so much Ola you are awesome!
I like how genuine this videos are, straight and honest.
Keep the good work mate!
Your so lucky to got a Stealth BC Rich... I'm looking to this guitar since so many years :c
Do a Carcass cover
Ola said he don't like 5150
I doubt Necrotism had 5150. Well there is a sound that weren't copied over and over.
You are right. Necroticism it is one of my favorite album of metal. JCM 900 ? Maxon 808 ?
Frédéric Emmanuel Guillerand Only close resemblace I managed to get was Metaltronix coupled with Marshall 2x15 silver jubilee bass cabinet.
Ah yes, the good old overdriven fingernail polish
Can you make a solar guitar with a Stealth shape?
I would like to see an X shaped Solar, what ever it may be.
1,000 Eyes was always a Death favorite of mine.
How to get YOUR tone on a budget! Please I know a lot of people are waiting for this
Jack JD how small of a budget and what do you currently have?
Justin C. Oh, it’s not just about me, I’d say to use a budget of 1000€ for Head and Cab and pedals
Wampler Dracarys into FX loop. That should get you close
Awm Joeyjoejoe Pretty clever, just can you explain why in the effects loop? I’m kinda new in this world of head and cab
I am lucky enough to own that very axe, signatured - ( such an amazing shape, like it's biomechanical ... and of course a reverse headstock is a must )
Chuck is my musical God and his albums, my Bible.
I miss him so much ... but I like to think he wasn't taken from us, so much as he was needed elsewhere.
Blesses, Brother 😔🙏🤍 We'll meet again someday 🙏🤍
I super happy you gave him a video, thank you, we must never forget such a legend and pioneer of music.
Symbolic is incredible. RIP Chuck.
Carcass - Heartwork ... pleeeeease

chuck use to come jam with us in cocoa beach,he lived in orlando. Good times.Thanx OLA
The Hesu sounds too good. It's missing that anemic Marshall cab sound.
Take a shot every time Ola says "back in the '90s"
Thanks Ola!
Chuck is the biggest Inspiration for me With Dimebag Darrell and Dave Mustaine!
Never in my life have I been able to get a valestate to sound that good
I'm desperately looking for this amp !!!
Not sure where you're from, but in Denmark I've seen Valvestate prices from 100$ to 650$, which is fucking ridiculous.
it is not that easy to get good sound out of this amp ...
If you can't get the sound from the amp itself use your favourite distortion pedal into the clean channel. ;)
Rotten*Sludge ... hahaha Yes!
depending where you are i have the 100 watt limited edition combo version

amazing how he kind of owned that sound....he got by on his talent alone....but it was a different time....you can only imagine him with modern amps what he would have done....rip chuck
Theree were many great amps at the time. If he used this its probably because it worked for him.
I think it is still grainy somehow. Just guessing, but does it have anything to do with the fact that you don't have the same Valvestate head that Death had back in the day? It was the 8100. I have it and it is richer in harmonics, has a flatter, drier sound ->pretty much like Death. Get a 8100 ;-))
same amps,sorry guy
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 The diferences are not huge, but they are not the same Amp. Period. Just compare the schmatics. And if I recall correctly, the VS100 uses the tube in both channels, while the 8100 only uses it in the distortion channel, but not in the clean.
4:38 Who else unconsciously growled *STRONGER THAN ANY FAITH*
Chuck used a model 8100 valvestate, I own one and it sounds better than the vs100 model, still a pretty scooped sound though especially when u turn up the contour, might have to switch out the preamp tube and see if that changes anything

I still own the Marshall VS100 with matching cab from the early 90s Don't use the head much anymore but the cab is still in use!! Great video 🤘😝🤘
Listening back a 2nd time, you can hear something going on with the preamp tube when you stop playing. I wonder if it was going microphonic?
Probably, these amps are getting pretty old. Considering that preamp tubes rarely get changed, I'd say it's time to swap it.
3:11 - 3:30 literally me every time i pick mine up, even if I've played a particular riff 1,000 times 🤣😂 especially me when learning a new song. Constant repetition!

Just sounds amazing man fucking killer this is one of my favorite videos besides the "will it chug" series, I always watch this video over and over again.
I love how you handle your mistakes. Good review, True personality, you deserve your popularity.
I use to have one of these, and I always thought they sounded decent, but then I got a Randall V2, and decided to sell, sometimes I wish I still had it, because it is kind of unique. It defiantly sounded better after you changed the preamp tube.
That's actually not the popular Valvestate. The one Chuck used was the 8100. It's much more tasty.

I still have an 8200 that doesn't work anymore and I remember it having a tighter low end.

Yes! Symbolic is my favourite Death album! Sold my Stealth a few months ago since it was way to neck heavy, the action was high despite the bridge being as low as possible, it would not stay in tune and the scale was too short for proper string tension, even with 10-52. :/
Honestly I'd go at least .60 on that scale length.
Yeah, that would have been an option, but I don't like how such thick strings play and feel. 52 is the largest gauge that I like and it works well on 25.5'' in D. I've put 10-52 on my Stealth, tuned to D. This is also the gauge Chuck used, from what I read.
24 3/4" is difficult for low tuning. Even is 25" makes a huge difference. I have a 7-string 25" that works great in standard B with .095 to .70.
Seen Death in 98.. amazing band
You slightly struggling with the intro to Symbolic was so relatable LMAO
Ola you need to try the 8100 Valvestate..the 1st Generation. It sounds very very different to the VS100 and also much much better. I had both back the days

It's a great amp but it's not for everyone. It's a thin sound but it cuts through a dense mix! They sound best with a Boss ge7 boosting the mids along with a noisegate. The X2N is a hot pickup but it has the best split sound I've ever heard.
Half life 3 confirmed.
