      From Machine Head "We play in drop B tuning +40 cents for most songs and C# standard +40 cents for a handful of others" Awsome video Ola !

      Ola Englund great sound! Could you also run through the same rig with passive pickups so we can hear the difference? Always been a fan of EMG but contemplating going passive.

  • @adrianpena6450

    In a lesson that Robb Flynn did for the song “Locust”, he said they tune 40 cents sharp from Drop B because it seems to hit a sweet spot for the harmonics and overall tone in that tuning.

      That reasoning sounds like bullshit, but tuning sharp so you don't hit the strings out of tune while you're picking IS a thing.

      Lol, I've had a 5150 for 15 years, and I've always just said "yep, this sounds exactly like Machine Head's tone" every time I plugged it up. It's a super easy tone to get... which is cool since it's really good. I can tell there's some small differences due to mixing and recording, but the character is just super obvious and totally there. After watching this video I know why... I am usually playing Ibanez RG's with EMG's through an SD-1 into a modded 5150 into a 5150 cab loaded with V30s (those sheffields sucked).

  • @SpectreSoundStudios
    @SpectreSoundStudios 6 лет назад +302

    Loved Burn My Eyes! Apparently they used a cab loaded with Greenbacks.... Anyway, great analysis, and that's amazing you can get that kind of tone with the presence back that far... I can't get anything useful out of a 5150 unless it's past 3:00!

    • @colinaljets3219
      @colinaljets3219 6 лет назад +14

      SpectreSoundStudios I seen Machine Head live many of times. You and Ola have things right about the modding of the amps plus the Marshall cabs loaded with greenbacks. However, Phil and Robb use the green Rhythm channel. Whatever mods where done to their amps would interesting to know about.

    • @clutchmasters3402

      Glenn, i always kind if figured the standard voltage in European countrys would sort of affect the sound of a tube amp. If love to see you do a video with Ola to see about debunking this myth. Thanks much to the both of you.

    I have a few boutique and rare high gain amps, and my modded Craigslist 5150 sig is still my fav out of all of them. If that amp is yours, you should try a Eurotubes hybrid tube kit in it. Sounds insane.

      the 5150 i have is too dark sounding, not brutal at all like the ones on youtube, maybe its the sheffield cabs it came with, i have the original 5150 signature combo

      unfortunately its not possible where I live, plus the amp blew up, literally something in it blew up. I have a zoom G5N now though, for a digital piece of equipment that doesnt break the bank, this thing is a tone machine.

      My 5150's Power section won't fire.... I'm sad. Newer tubes with only a few dozen hrs of play and a few gigs. Preamp tubes light. 6L6 no juice. Any advice on a tech or forum? I really enjoy the killer tone and simplicity of the classic 5150!

      J Latimer You should search facebook for amp repair and modification pages. Also for pages and groups dedicated to a 5150. Also try 5150 modded on youtube and ask the modders. Most of them know about repairs.Have a nice day!

      John P it's quiet enough, I don't have any hiss/hum that seems specific to this amp and not "normal".To be fair I usually don't go higher than 5 or 6 on the gain knob...I do need to add a noise gate if I use an overdrive pedal in the front though.

I loaned them my 5150 modded with groove tubes, and Marshall cab and my guitar, a Patrick Eggle iommi with Emg 81 pickups, dont know if they used my gear on the record or not, but its nice to think that they did! Great vid once again! Usually when talking about 5150/6505 mods the most common two I've bumped into are bias mod and midrange EQ mod. On midrange mod the 50k mid pot is replaced with either 25k or 22.5k pot, which give lower sweep on mids. That could explain the midrange on MH's tone in combination of Tubescreamer.

    Since you've mentioned it I'll share my knowledge: for their latest albums (at least from The Blackening) they're tuned to Drop B with the A set to 450 Hz.
    If trying to tune to this with a regular pedal tuner all the strings should be tuned so they're all exactly between Drop B and Drop C.
    Never tried to use this tuning with Davidian or other older songs but I assume it should be something similar.
    Cheers from Italy Ola, keep up the good work!

    I heard from a reasonably credible source that the 5150 in question was modded by Todd Langner here in the Bay Area. Langner worked at ADA for a while. Allegedly, Langner had a big part to play creating the ADA MP-1. Then he started modded amps, then briefly came out with his own line of amps. Awesome stuff too!

    I remember when Robb got his first 5150. He heard my guitarist at the time Devin Walker's 5150. Devin got one of the first ones in the Bay Area. Robb heard it right after he got it and bought one for himself. The First 5150's are not the same amp as the new ones. Peavey changed the amps a little while after they came out. How they changed I cant tell because I dont know. If I remember correctly Robb used Devin's 5150 on Burn My Eyes also. That 5150 sounds different than any other 5150 I've ever heard.

      I love hearing origin stories of bands that I like. Especially regarding their gear and stuff like that. So this is very cool, thank you for sharing this!
      The old 5150s with the block letter front are actually exactly the same as the lighter ones and the current age 6505. The reason they sounded “better“ in most peoples opinion is because of the Sylvania tubes that they shipped with originally. They are commonly regarded as some of the best sounding NOS tubes you can put in an amp. Around the time they switched to the script front is roughly around the same time the NOS Sylvania tubes started becoming in short supply, so I believe they started shipping them out with Sovtek tubes if I’m not mistaken.
      Move forward to today, and if you play on an older 5150 of either block letter or script in comparison to a newly manufactured 6505, the old 5150 is going to sound a bit different and arguably “better”. It’s not because of any differences in the design. But this is because as the components in an amp age, they start sounding a bit different. The general consensus is that older tube amps start sounding better with age. The components age and drift a bit and they start to sound a bit warmer and looser. That’s with any amp. So if you take any amp that was manufactured 15 or 20 years ago and play on it compared to a newly manufactured version, the older one is pretty much always going to sound better for this reason.

    i got the Peavey 112 combo and a Jackson King V with EMG 81/85s this sounds pretty close and i get clear distortion as deep as i want to go i also use whole step tuning and for cheap setups I cant complain about the tone... i have a mini TS and I noticed the same thing and I corrected it by sending it max on the pedal and floating it with the tone knobs and pots on my guitar and i got the deep dirty sound... love ur vids!!! ALWAYS!! 🤘

    • @shadowalk
      @shadowalk 6 лет назад +4

      BeardedDanishViking actually it’s an ESP custom M-I with a fixed bridge and only one pickup (EMG 81) and tuned to B standard.

    • @shadowalk
      @shadowalk 6 лет назад +5

      He lost that modded Marshall sometime after Demanufacture. I'm not sure if his ESP got lost with it or if he just retired that guitar. I'm not sure if Obsolete was the first album that he started using a Line 6 POD. I do know that the Digimortal tone is all Line 6 POD, though.
