- Big day out for Miss Nancy today, answering the question on everyone’s lips ‘Do greyhounds swim?’ We had a totally insane time at the swimming pool which was packed with dogs living their best lives, and their crazy keepers. If you love funny dogs this is for you, was a fun day hope you enjoy!

I adopted Miss Nancy 3 years ago, she is an ex-racing greyhound born in Ireland. She has raced and she had a different name when I adopted her. She is the first dog I’ve ever had and it was a crazy ride getting to know each other, we are best friends and share all our adventures together, and here on RUclips!
We have been living in a van for the past year and are currently hanging out in Cornwall.

What a fun video story! Miss Nancy is adorable and these magical stories ✨️ make her immortal! She is here with us all.
We love you.🎉❤
I’m glad you liked it, it was such. Funny trip! I know I will love watching this again one day. My immortal princess ❤️😍 thank you so much 🙏
Next week take her swimming somewhere warmer. Like an ice pool in the Arctic.
😂 I wish they did it in the summer! Maybe we both need wet suits..
@@missnancysdayoff One of you would look sleek and sexy in a wet suit. The other one owns a greyhound. 😁
miss Nancy's thinking Mmmm do these 2 really expect me to be getting in a freezing cold pool, no chance😂
It could well be that Miss Nancy is a bit brighter than we are 😂
What a fun day 😁👌. Bless Nancy... some would say sensible 😜😂💖🐾🐾
Very!Yeah I mean I can’t exactly blame her given my own inability to get in it was pretty nippy 😂🐕💕🍁
Excellent video really enjoyed it. The water looked very cold and Miss Nancy clearly did the sensible thing by not going in. Looking forward to next video.
thank you! It was pretty arctic I think she was correct, would have been a sad sight all wet!
I miss my Miss Lotte so much. But I had to laugh so much because she was just like Miss Nancy. Swimming ah uh what? In there? Are you serious? What a sweetheart ❤
The little face 😍 kind of excited and confused then becoming worried when it became clear the crazy people wanted her to get wet 😂 Miss Lotte such a lovely name 💕
My girl wouldn't have left her bed and blanket she would have just watched 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 very sensible really!
Aside from a bit of social anxiety around the occasional exuberant dog forgetting to respect her personal space, this appears to have been a grand day for Miss Nancy. Intellectually stimulating, lots of treats and compliments and most importantly her favorite human companions respected her wishes. Selfish humans might have carried her into the water. Gd onya!
She was massively brave, I was prepared to take her straight out if she hated it but she didn’t really seem to worried just interested and confused by the madness, bit like me! It was an unforgettable day 🥰
She loves it really,the actress!!!!😂❤❤
😂😍 just likes putting on a show 🐕
No rather wait till warmer weather thankyou . Good video thankyou tricia 😊🐕👍
Glad you enjoyed it😊 Probably wait til warmer weather to try again! 🐕❤️
@@missnancysdayoff thankyou😊 tricia
Thanks for sharing
The best we have gotten with our grey boy is wading in the river on a hot day. Our galga wants NOTHING to do with any nonsense involving getting wet. 😂
But Miss Nancy was very brave and calm with all the nuttiness and chaos! What a good girl she is.
They sounds very sensible 🤗 So funny aren’t they, MIss Nancy has always been a water avoider but then she actually plunged into a river and swam last year! She was great. But now she is back to avoidance 🤣 I was actually so proud of how brave she was because it was a lot, so much noise and action but she didn’t seem to be scared just confused and interested! But best watched from under her blanket 💕
@@missnancysdayoff they're utterly ridiculous. But adorable. 🙂. With their low body fat they're not great swimmers and my two have a lab friend who they watch in disbelief (the boy) or horror (the girl). 🤣.
We live very rural so we work on socializing our two and I was very impressed Miss Nancy was the picture of graciousness with all that dog chaos around her, blanket or no!
@katefromantikanueva4629 ridiculous and adorable is a great description 🥰 I wasn’t really even sure is she could swim but she looked like a little seal very natural! Perhaps it was a once in a lifetime thing 😂
I’ve had Miss Nancy three years, and even a year ago she wouldn’t have handled that. I was prepared to take her out straight away if she was upset, it’s amazing to see what progress she has made from being a dog who was nervous and scared of the world when she left kennels. They are amazing!
TBH I don’t blame Nancy for not going in , that pool looks bloody freezing lol
i couldn’t blame her either 🤣 it was Baltic!
Aww bless her, clearly Miss Nancy is the sensible one 😂
Bet that water was freezing 🥶
That’s what she tells me 😂 it was as soon as I got in it was just hurting and I just could get my top half wet! 🥶
@@missnancysdayoff Don't blame you too cold. Your sister did well to get in.
Hope you are all well!
Don't forget to look out your van window on Monday night, it's peak meteor showers apparently, you might see a shooting star ⭐
@stu7575 she actually seems to enjoy the cold water, I like the swimming but not the cold feeling If I’m honest 😂 we are ok thanks how are you? Meteor showers sound amazing and it’s pretty dark here I hope I remember to look!
Has nobody ever told you ,you can take a greyhound to a swimming pool but you can’t make it swim!
You know they haven’t! 😂 I had my suspicions though but you never know 😍
This is my favourite video I’ve laughed so much 😂
Nuts! 😂
Hmmm....swim....or snuggle under a blanket....hmmmm....tough choice 😂
When you put it like that 😂
Congratulations to the good burghers of Penzance for allowing this! It was (potentially) great fun for all dog owners, even if Miss Nancy was less than keen.
Massive congrats to sister for jumping in and doing her best to encourage Nancy! I hope she got some cake, too
It was hilarious and wierd, happens once a year when they are emptying the pool I think! My sister is very brave, and Miss Nancy is hard to resist when it comes to cake 🤭
😂😂😂 Ms Nancy is displaying all the sensibilities attributed to her breed. Why would you want to get into the freezing cold water unless it’s blazing hot and you need to “cool off” in order to be comfortable? I’m with Ms Nancy. Just watch all the shenanigans poolside. 😊
🤣 yeah I mean she checked things out, assessed the situation, and realised it was not a suitable time to get wet! I think she found it interesting though from under her blanket 😍
Awww! 😂❤ That was very entertaining. The water looked 🥶 so I don’t blame Nancy! 🤣
Cudos to your sister….. braving the water! 👍😃
Omg I can’t blame her either I couldn’t do it it was painful! I need to toughen up. Nancy was more comfortable with her blanket 😂🥰🤗 my sister is hardy!
Tbh…… I’d have been the same so don’t worry about it! 😂😂😂
@barrycollins5682 glad it’s not just me 😂😂😂
Don't blame Nancy. It's cold and windy.😂 She's too cute though ❤
I couldn’t really either she was much happier under her blanket 🫣🥰
Cant blame Miss Nancy for not wanting to go in, think she needs a little wetsuit! Have a great week together ♥
I think so too! and she would be so cute in it. I think we might have a struggle getting it on though 😅 thank you you too! 💕
😂 Now you’re talking! 😂
I’d have been straight in!
I’d be right behind you! 😂
This is brilliant! I reckon if you go again she might go in again!!
I wish you had been there! Yeah with practice I think we could get her 🤭
Great Video! What an absolutely barking mad idea, and so terribly British!
🙏 it was totally nuts ! But very funny
You are a beautiful couple,,, much happiness
🤗
Good evening Tori and Nancy.
It’s quite obvious Miss Nancy really loves her comfort a.k.a. in the bed
Miss Nancy was not having any of that nonsense going swimming she’s an independent woman and knows her mind .
On the plus side it was a great family day out you guys were having a ball.
Good evening I hope you Jesse and Snowy are good! Haha yes well I thought perhaps, and she did start going down the stairs before that dog barged her out the way! Dare say she wouldn’t have gone in though. Unless I filled the whole pool up with snacks. I’d never make her though what a sweet angel dog 🙏
@@missnancysdayoff We are keeping well thanks for asking 🙏.
The dog barging incident kind of put an end to her going near the pool but to be honest I don’t think she was too keen on it anyhow 😂
Who could blame her it looked cold in fairness you got in and your sister also very brave 🥶
😂 I’m 112kgs of pure feartie! 🤣🤣
😂😂 they apparently have a hot springs pool there too but it was empty!
I think if you can go very early in the morning when the water feels warmer than the ambient temperature; and where the greyhound can walk in without stairs. Greyhounds baulk at stairs too.
That sounds good! I think being a greyhound she asks ‘Why?’ And I haven’t been able to come up with a good answer. She has certainly had to come a long way with stairs, I got in her when I lived in a first floor flat so it was a quick learn 😍
can't blame miss nancy - far too cold!!
she’s a sensible dog, more sensible that her human companions!
In a similar manner you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink!
I find that with a greyhound as well!
Poor Nancy lol may be someone needs telling whippets paddle on sunny warm days and never ever swim 😂 ..
My friends deerhound once went running after a swan stood up in what seemed to be a shallow pond ..
The swan knew better , and Thorn wish he had , and so did My friend who had to rescue Thorn from the depths whilst fighting off the swan 😂
Ya did well to get Nancy out at all , she looked well snug in the van ! 🙄
😂 that’s so funny, I wouldn’t fancy fighting with a swan either!! I swear she ha swim once before so I always wonder if there’s a chance she’ll go back in! This was a tough sell though 🤭
I live here, but the chance of getting my greyhound in that pool are zero minus!
😅 would you ever take them down? It was a long shot for the swim I admit!
Some greyhounds swim I’ve got 3 and one of them goes crazy with excitement when she gets a chance to swim. Also mine generally like getting in the water when it is hot. Otherwise not so much.
That is so sweet! Nancy swam once in a river but never since 😅
❤❤❤
Susan Calman did a program where she travels around the U.K. in her van, Helen Mirren, and went there. She went in for a swim, but it WAS Summer! I don’t blame Miss Nancy for not being that keen - it looked rather chilly.Hope you and her stay safe, especially with these dreadful storms. Dash and Crumpet say hello to Miss Nancy.
that sounds like an interesting programme! Yes potentially we would have had better luck in summer, and if she had a dog friend with her. thank you this last storm was pretty hairy but we are ok! Miss Nancy says hello to Dash and Crumpet and hopes they have a fun weekend!
Apologies if you've answered this before, but how old is Miss Nancy? Also I hope you were safe from the latest storm in your van!
Shes so cute in her blanket by the pool, I would have loved that doggie swim day what an awesome idea.
She is five! Sixth birthday this month 🤗 the storm was nuts in the van I was pretty scared to be honest but Miss Nancy was so good and no harm done!
@@missnancysdayoff Ah shes still a young buck, glad you were both safe!
@JimDuggan-tq2lv yep just a bit white in the face 😂 thank you!
😂 No.
Great that you allowed her to walk away 👏
All the mad Spaniels & Labs were in their element !
I think the only way it will happen is if it's completely on her terms with other long dog swimming friends to demonstrate. When she's wants to cool off at the height of summer in a quiet, natural pool with warm water and a gentle gradient so she can choose whether to paddle, lay down in it or swim.
Different breeds float differently - making it awkward for some - muscle is heavy, so her back legs may sink more and her chest cavity will be lighter and buoyant. Better that way, than the poor, front heavy, bullbreeds, who struggle.
Stiff raised tail at +3:57 indicates nervous - compare with other dogs appeasing wagging tail.
+5:01 direct eye contact, shortened lips/commissure means get outta my personal space. Spaniel ignores her.
Google dog calming signals 😊
nope 🤣 Ahh I would never make her, just wanted to try and help her try it if she wanted to be brave! She has swum properly once before in a river which was amazing so I thought just maybe if she found it exciting, but I think without a friend dog it was too much.
you’re right, when we walk with her long legged friend by lakes her pal always runs in after other dogs as she loves water, and Nancy runs up and down the side for a while, then gradually starts venturing in after them up to her knees 😍
I didn’t see many if any bulldogs swimming maybe they were too sensible 😊
ie body language, agreed I think of that as her nervous aggressive excited stance, it’s usually accompanied by wanting to go over to the object of her attention. If we are on the opposite side of a road I don’t usually allow it but when they are right in front of us sometimes I have to let it play out. interestingly though although his tail was wagging and she was stiff, she didn’t do anything he was the one that snapped at her then she defended herself (I’m pretty sure anyway), it’s very interesting learning about their body language I’m certainly not expert but I’ve learnt a lot since I had her.
Yes curled lips and she was growling too, she hates other dogs getting in her space when she is sleeping I usually try to head them off 🤣 surprising how many just can’t take the hint though! And it makes sense right, I’d never tell her off for that I’d growl too!
@@missnancysdayoff Oh you know you stuff then, Tori 👍
He was sniffing her but didn't like it when she reciprocated 🤨
You probably know all this, but here's some body language vids I send owners, if it helps -

I’m very interested to learn, I read a lot before and after I got Nancy and I’ve observed a lot, but I’ve stopped reading and there much more to learn. Thanks for those links perfect thing to get me started again 😊 ha yes well if I’m honest Miss Nancy herself has been guilty of wanting to sniff but not wanting to be sniffed 😂 so do you work with dogs?
Sight hounds don't do swimming, my greyhound ran into a duck pond during the summer, he thought it was grass it was so green, that ended with me going in the duck pond to fish him out, he was so scarred he bit the side of my face as i lifted him up onto the edge, i had a decent audience that just stood watching tuting and pointing, i dandered off covered in dirt and green pond weed right up to my shorts and blood down the side of my face with my hair stuck to it, i didn't know it was bleeding that bad as i thought it was just wet, i got some very strange glares as i headed back to the van with my 3 sight hounds, when i looked in the mirror it was like something out of a horror movie.
Not true I live in New Zealand and my greyhounds love the beach! And swimming.
oh my gosh that sounds very dramatic! Poor guy if it was unexpected no wonder her freaked out, I hope your face was ok. I think ex-racers do tend to be scared of the water as it is so unknown! Miss Nancy has swum in a river before though so I believe it’s possible sometimes 🤣 three sight hounds in a van sounds pretty incredible, even just with one Miss Nancy has problems turning round inside.
that’s great to hear, I’d like Nancy to learn to love the sea ( she loves the beach part) I think it’s just an unknown quantity and so treated with suspicion! with other greyhounds to egg her on and play with her she could maybe learn to love it too.
@@missnancysdayoff My greyhound wouldn't race at all so they kept him in a cage in a field for 2 years to try break him, they starved, kicked and God knows what else to him and he still wouldn't race, I managed to get him before he got the chop, I've had him about 3 years now and he's still a bag of nerves but he's come along way since his cage days, I can't put a collar on him as they kicked him and beat him by holding him on a lead with a collar, he's my big special boy, he's a big gentle giant.
@graemedevine9651 oh my god that is awful. The poor boy I am so glad that you found him and saved him how did that happen? It takes a lot of time and love to get over trauma, and now he is safe with you getting those things. I think of it like everyday they spend with you is cancelling out an old day in confinement and giving them new happy memories. It’s all tipping in the right direction 😊 it’s just awful though. Humans do cruel things everyday and sadly don’t seem to recognise it. Sending him hello from Miss Nancy and I!
Hello Tori and Nancy! I adopted Zoe the Greyhound two months ago, and I would love to live in a van, so when I found your videos I got very excited- my two favourite things combined!
I am building Zoe up to be able to go on long walks like you and Miss Nancy do. How far are your hikes with Miss Nancy? And do you find you need to give her rest breaks?
Hi Rachel and Zoe! So nice to hear from you 😊
Building Zoe up for walks definitely the way forward: I’m kind of doing that again now after summer when Miss Nancy doesn’t walk as much. In winter we regularly do 1.5-3 hr walks I’d say. If she does get tired you can tell and often she will just lie down. If she can then rest for a bit and have a drink she is usually good to go again to ye absolutely, rest breaks and snacks and I always take her bed!
Have you tried Zoe in a van? I have to say Miss Nancy actually does not like the van much 😣
Aw, thanks for that! I took Zoe out for just over an hour today and she managed fine but then slept alllll daaaay loooong 😂
The van thing is just a nice daydream for now. These days I've got my hands full getting Zoe settled into civilian life. We can't share a bed like you (she has growled a couple of times when I've been patting her in her bed, so I give her space now) so there wouldn't be enough room for us both in a van anyway!
That's no good that Miss Nancy doesn't love the van. Do you think you will be able to stay in it? No doubt she's learnt lots of new things from her time in it. All the best ❤
@Rachel-mi4jl it’s so sweet when they get all tired out 😅
It’s definitely a lot getting a greyhound is she your first? Nancy is mine and I found it really hard for the first sixth months. That’s very wise Nancy still growls at me sometimes, they definitely aren’t used to people being in their personal space, even though they are so sweet and affectionate. Miss Nancy also suffers from sleep startle so I always try to be careful when she is lying down or sleeping as it can be hard to tell if she is asleep or not! If you ever want to talk about anything greyhound just send a message, I found other greyhound owners really helpful when I was worried about things at first.
I actually made her her own bedroom under my bed but she never wanted to sleep in it 🤣 by which point we had been sharing a camp bed for a while so we had got used to being in close proximity to each other. I don’t think we can stay in it forever no, we have had lots of fun and all the new experiences before and after the van have done so much for her confidence even though I worry it’s too much or her sometimes! But she has come so far since she first arrived it’s amazing 🥰
@missnancysdayoff Oh my gosh, I have so many greyhound questions! I am a first time dog-mum, and very nervous. That makes me feel much better to hear that you had a period of adjustment at first too. I love your videos, they are so simple and lovely, and I am learning a lot about how to interact with Zoe from watching you with Miss Nancy.
For the first few weeks with Zoe, I kept getting the telepathic message from her, "I'm not a teddy bear." I guess I didn't listen and she had to get louder and growl! They are such mysterious creatures, so otherworldly, and the relationship feels so nuanced with them. It feels like living with a wild, magical beast!
I'm glad you have both had these adventures in the van and look forward to seeing what's next!
P.S. My nickname for Zoe is 'Inspector Gadget', because she has to do a full sniffing inspection every time she comes back in the house 🤣
@Rachel-mi4jl I totally understand that was me as a first time dog mother and it is very nerve wracking! Greyhounds are very mysterious animals and I was so nervous and worried I wasn’t doing it right 😅 Honestly send me an email if you like with any questions! I was a wreck for months and I felt like I was the only person struggling, when I found out I wasn’t it made it all easier and it’s so worth it. Really glad you’re liking our videos!
Zoe sounds like a sweet girl, and it is just communication confusion as you say. Because Nancy would want to get right next to me I thought it meant it was ok to cuddle her etc but of course it’s much more complicated, she is really affectionate but also she was feeling very nervous and confused and needed reassurance of closeness, but that didn’t mean it was ok for me to get in her personal space all the time. It was a learning curve for both of us! I can hug her now, I’m not sure she enjoys it persay as it’s not a dog thing to do but she tolerates it 🙈 It’s good for them to be able to growl to let us know when they feel uncomfortable. Sounds like you and Zoe are getting on really well 😊
Inspector Zoe Gadet sounds about as nosy as Nancy Drew !
Sporting and working breeds wet, sighthounds and husky dry. Although unethical, a hundred years + of selective breeding has predictable results, with exceptions of course. So kind of you to respect her expressed boundaries.
I would never have made her go in although I admit I wanted too 😂 She has swum before though of her own volition in a river it was incredible! ❤️
I don't know why you don't keep your hair in a pony tail when you're out on windy days like that; I think they look really sexy. OOPS! Pardon, I'm overstepping the bounds of familiarity here.
Are there any days in Cornwall that aren’t windy? I’m really starting to wonder 😂
I know it can blow really cold in Penzance and Long Rock but now I don't have to go out any more. I've got a lovely fleece lined jacket with a hood that would look good on you tho' it is XL. And get yourself thermal leggings and tops; you'll need them if you're going to stay in your mini mobile home for another winter. Your viewing audience anxiously awaits your next move. (Will she or won't she pack it in? I know I would.)@@missnancysdayoff
The Grey breed, as a whole, are poor swimmers. Proceed with caution
She has actually swim once before in a river without any encouragement from me it was an amazing sight! I wasn’t really sure if she’d be very good at it before then 🤗
Greyhounds are not very good swimmers she needs a life jacket and maybe take her to an indoor pool for some lessons to grow her confidence.
she actually did go swimming once in a river just like a seal, I say this because I was so proud! an amazing girl 🥰
Sensible girl not wanting to go in. Greys are terrible at swimming - not enough body fat and high blood pressure.
She obviously knew what was best. She has swum properly once before and she was like this amazing little black seal I was both surprised and proud, nowhere near as cold on that day though!
It is lovely to see if they go for it. My lad ended up getting a life jacket as the one and only time he went in the water, he lay there on his side and started to sink! :-)
We always wanted a greyhound went to the rescue centre now we have 7 a lurcher and a terrier will never have another breed of dog now
Oh wow that is brilliant! 7 at once?! I can’t imagine 😂🤭
@@missnancysdayoff we took 1 to see what it was like ended up getting 3 more and then another 3 now its first up best seat in the house
@davidwinter2959 that is brilliant, I can’t imagine living with so many hounds it must be crazy and also wonderful ❤️
A good 2 hour walk a feed u don't know u have them apart from the lurcher she can run all day then its a race to my man shed for the woodburner on and best seat
@davidwinter2959 it just sounds brilliant 🤩
