  • Hey guys, this was the first proper walk I did by myself since losing Miss Nancy and the first time I really vocalised what has happened. It was pretty cathartic actually speaking these truths out loud, and I think helped me to start accepting what happened. Sorry it’s a bit long, there was quite a lot I needed to say once I started, and also some fantastic views from the South West coastal path between St Loys and Lamorna in Cornwall.
    I hope you enjoy it,
    Tori x
    A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends, who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! We make videos showing what it’s like to have a greyhound as a pet, the beautiful outdoors, vanlife, and life with a greyhound!
    When we aren’t making videos I am a jeweller and illustrator, you can check out my work here: www.victoriagr...

      @@missnancysdayoffEach dog has their own quirks and personality but what they all have in common is their bond with their human, their ability to give love and their joy at living in the here and now. Your memories of Nancy won't change or fade and a new dog won't take her place in your heart. It'll just find its own place there and snuggle right into it. That's what dogs do.

    Don't apologise for tears. With great love comes great grief and crying is normal and helpful. I think that every one of your followers just wants to give you a hug.
    Unfortunately there's no fast forward button through the grieving process. We just have to continue our journey as best we can and getting out into nature and keeping active are both helpful on that path. This video had some beautiful shots of nature in it and some wise words from you. I hope that you manage to feel a little better each day

    I'm not sure I can watch this all the way thru.. I've got two greyhounds; one is getting to be really quite senior and I am living with anticipatory grief these days. They are an incredibly special breed. No dog will ever replace Miss Nancy but there are so many lovely greyhounds out there crying out for a loving home and a hooman to call their own. When you're ready, honour the memory of Miss Nancy and open your heart to another grey.

    This one was a really nice video to watch. Whilst you're clearly still in mourning, you do seem quite a bit better during your walk, so taking your own advice to get outside has definitely helped you. You're doing great. One day you'll reach the point we all do which is the moment you decide it's time to rescue another. In the meantime you could combine your love of greyhounds and your own idea of volunteering and either do something to raise money for a greyhound rescue charity or just volunteer at an actual resuce centre. It's difficult seeing how many animals have previously been hurt or abandoned by people at those places but it's surely rewarding for someone like you to help them in some way. Maybe in the future you could even do a limited run of greyhound themed jewellery, make a video about it for us and then donate the proceeds of those to whichever rescue centre you got Miss Nancy from.

    • @missnancysdayoff
      @missnancysdayoff  5 месяцев назад +2

      I am glad you liked it ☺️ Honestly my mood really did start to change and improve throughout the walk it was the first step in starting to feel better I think, and I am making sure I keep getting out. I think these are great ideas and I have been thinking about it and how to make it happen. It is tough as well because a lot of these dogs have been so badly mistreated that I think not everyone can deal with actually seeing it and I have a huge amount of respect for everybody who works rescuing animals. If I thought I could find the courage myself I’d love to have a rescue one day, truthfully I don’t know if I could stand it. I would love to try and raise money for these charities and spend some time working with the dogs so I will see how I can make it happen 🙏

    I’m so tremendously sorry for your loss.
    Nancy’s years with you will have undoubtedly been the best of her life.
    We lost our young rescue cat Finn unexpectedly last year and it was honestly one of the worst things.
    It’s obviously far too soon to consider, but in time (if it’s the right thing for you) maybe you could consider improving another furry companion’s life.
    When the time was right for us we gave another little rescue kitten his home (and then fostered another). I’d worried at first that I was just trying to replace Finn but I came to realise that these little fur balls are having better lives for coming to us and that seems to be the best way we could honour him.
    Much love to you and the hugely missed Nancy. Thanks for the hours spent with both of you on here.

    So good to see you out and about again in beautiful Cornwall, after the sad loss of Miss Nancy.
    For those that are connected, being in the 'Great Outdoors' is therapy in itself, I totally agree with what you said.
    It took getting a dog, many years ago, to get my connection, but it has since supported me through many hard times, and losses.
    I personally choose to go to our favourite places, once I am ready. There are tears, but also good memories, which bring a smile.
    The smiles eventually outweigh the tears, which, to me, means acceptance of the loss, but eternal memories of the good times.

    So sorry for your loss. When we lost our boy Cecil last year it was the hardest thing ever, but we were approached a few weeks later by our local RGT sanctuary to meet a very special dog. After visiting Brian (that's right, he's called Brian) weekly for two months to gain his trust, we brought home this absolute unit of a dog who we knew was going to change our lives again. Seeing him become a happy, healthy and confident dog has brought us so much joy. We'll never forget our boy Cecil, but I know he'd be proud that we are helping another hound. You'll never forget the memories of Miss Nancy, but you can build new ones with another quirky bag of elbows too! All the best and keep thinking of the good times :-)

    I’m so sorry. We have just lost our greyhound a couple if weeks ago. It was sudden, distressing and unexpected, a seizure aged just 7. We are broken, he is everywhere but at the same time he has gone. I still catch myself opening the fridge and thinking he will come trotting in, or saving bacon rind for him before the reality hits again. I think because greys are so gentle yet vulnerable in a way and work their way into our hearts by always being there the loss is palpable and on a level so profound it is hard to process. We have stopped walking and our wellbeing generally has taken a hit from not having our big lad there for cuddles and conversations albeit the latter were a bit one sided if I’m being honest :). What you and us are going through now is a process. It has different durations, highs and lows for all of us but it is a human response to loss. If one day you choose to open your heart and home to another hound or any dog, please know that you will never replace what has passed but neither is it disloyal. I say this because the dog we just lost came into our lives as a rescue after our previous dog died. We thought he would be a pale imitation but he was not - he was his own dog and then some. He got us through lockdown, he healed our grief and stole our hearts and settee. We were back to walking and our physical and mental health returned. The thing with greys is there is always another that has been rescued from a very uncertain future and so desperately needs a home. Sorry for the long comment, this hit because we are going through the same pain just now and it is tough. Sending you blessings and love, the Baxter family xx 14:02

    Keep on keeping on Tori, it's the greatest tribute to dear Miss Nancy. I remember when I lost my first dog in 2013, the feelings and grief were shockingly overwhelming. But grief is love. So one day you'll be able to share that love again with another sweet dog. And Miss Nancy will totally approve ❤❤❤❤

    You are asking what to do and all I can suggest is adopt another Greyhound. I know you can never replace Miss Nancy but all Greyhounds have their own individual characteristics and idiosyncrasies that you will learn to love and will love again.
    When you feel ready please adopt again I'm sure it will help you.

    What?! I just came across your videos recently, and didn't know that you'd lost Nancy. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. I lost my greyhound girl to bone cancer last year, and it was devastating. She was so similar to Nancy with her odd little quirks and mannerisms, so it was cathartic to see Nancy enjoying life and going on so many adventures and sort of living vicariously through you. I am so sorry for your pain - I personally hated walking our old hikes without my best bud, but you do whatever you need to keep going. Echoing what others have said, she had the best possible life with you, and you'll have her by your side, always.

    I understand exactly how you feel. Your grieving. A friend has just lost her rescue greyhound suddenly. Her constant companion. Its hard to explain to a non dog person. One idea ive seen recently is walking the West Highland Way. Not too strenuous and can be done in 7 -10 days. I saw a vlog recently of an american lady who, at a difficult time of her life, did the West Highland Way. It helped her enormously, and gave her a love of specific walks in the uk. Kayaking is a great option too. I started to learn. The best think is to go on a course, or join a club. They often do courses for newbies which includes the basics but importantly, the safety aspects, including how to get out of a capsized kayak, empty it, and get back in. Best wishes for whatever you choose x p.s. it turned out i didnt continue as my whippet didnt do water 😊

    • @missnancysdayoff
      @missnancysdayoff  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you ☺️. Your poor friend. I can’t help feeling close to all greyhounds. The West Highland way sounds great, and not too long to get me started. If I go to Scotland I could easily walk, kayak, so much space. You are gift though a course would be better than jumping straight in which was my natural instinct 🫣 Oh no, well Miss Nancy would agree with you whippet about that, I still wish I’d had the chance to take her on a boat though. At least you can easily pick up a whippet and pop them onto a boat…but if they hate it well who needs boats anyway ❤️ x

    I lost my first dog 7yrs ago to cancer and thought I would never stop grieving. Take each hour as it comes. Last Nov another dog came into my life and I was determined to never go through that again. He's a, smaller version of my old dog. So like him. His owner passed from cancer so I adopted him. Unfortunately there is no way round the grief. Eventually there'll come a day when you'll remember and smile and laugh instead of cry. Take care 🫂

    Tori, you are so brave posting this for all to see. Losing a beloved pet is one of the hardest experiences we can ever go through. As a grown man in his 50's I was in tears within the first 4 mins of watching this. Believe me, I truly can understand how this has made you feel, and all of it is perfectly natural to feel as you do. I lost a beloved cat in 2020, and I still miss him everyday, I still have many many pics of him, but 4 years on I still cannot look at them. The only thing I can say is to treasure the memories and the time you spent together, it will help in getting you to a better place eventually. We never forget the pets we loved, instead we learn to live with the loss and try and move forward as best as possible. Yes, life will never be the same, but it will be different, and in time the pain will lessen. It may sound cliched, but no matter how long the night is, the dawn will break. Stay positive, and keep doing the things in life that make you happy.

    Aww so sad, sending you many hugs x. The loss of a dog (or anyone) can feel so painful inside. When our dog Charlie died last year I was in bits. Technically my housemate owned him, but I was the one who walked him everyday and played with him etc, so he felt like he was my dog. I always think the best way to honour a lost dog, is to adopt another rescue dog and give them the best life you can.
    Unfortunately it's a sad part of life with pets, it almost feels cruel that dogs (and cats and most other pets, not turtles lol) lead much shorter lives than us. Like if there is a god (I'm not saying there is or isn't), why would they do this to us?!
    Keep mementos of her, collar, lead etc, and maybe use them for another dog. If you have the capacity for another dog, living arrangements-wise, I say you go for it. Get one, and treat it with all the love and care it deserves like with Nancy. Get another dog, not just to give the dog a good life, but to give you a good life also. I wish I could get one, but my mate the owner of where I live doesn't want another unfortunately.
    You're a lovely person and I wish you all the best, and hope to see many more videos from you in the future. Take real good care of yourself Tori. And if you ever feel down about Nancy, just remember her running on the sand or bounding around on the rocks, whatever memory makes you happy or laugh. I'll always remember Charlie leaping through a long, grassy meadow like some kind of gazelle, it always makes me chuckle. X

    • @missnancysdayoff
      @missnancysdayoff  5 месяцев назад +3

      I’m so sorry about Charlie. I think if you are the person doing all the walking and playing etc they definitely feel like your dog you must really miss him. Yeah even though you know in your reasonable mind when you get a pet that they will die before you it still seems so unfair when it happens. I have to say that the fact Miss Nancy is the first pet of my own I have had and that made me responsible for her life including the most compassionate end really struck me hard and made it very difficult to deal with the first few weeks.
      I have all her things it makes me feel better having them with me, and I will use them for a new dog she would want that she was very pragmatic 😊 I am not sure if I can adopt another dog straight away due to living arrangements as you say, but I am certain that I will now, it must be my future. I hope one day you can get another dog too, and I will definitely try to keep the happy and funny memories of Nancy in my mind 🥰 x

    Just caught up on my RUclips subs to hear of your sad loss Tori. So sorry to hear that Miss Nancy did not pull through. I'm sure you did everything possible for her and your absolute love for her was there for us all to see.
    I have a very dear friend who has been rescuing racing greyhounds for decades and she gives them the most wonderful "retirement" out in the Chiltern's countryside. Funnily enough most of them look exactly like Miss Nancy although she always has boys. She always has two at a time and over the years as each one has reached the end of their time with her she rescues another youngster who has come to the end their racing days and needs some love and security. Each time the new greyhound joins her family they all become inseparable and when I next meet her on my morning walk she introduces me to the new arrival and very soon, once he knows me, he will be coming to rest his head in my lap when kneel down to fuss them.
    I think all rescue greyhounds are special and I'm sure in time you will find another beautiful ex-racer that you will love every bit as much as you did Miss Nancy.
    Be gentle with yourself Tori. As time heals the pain you feel your love will stay forever and will lift you up and ultimately make you stronger. ❤

    Hey. I've just come across your channel and am really enjoying your content. I live on a narrowboat as of nearly 3 years ago, but want to also get a larger van to convert and explore via road. Just wanted to say I lost my old boy just before new years 2024. He was the absolute love of my life. A complicated boy (border collie), from the Pyrenees Mountains in the south of France. More wolf than dog lets just say, as he could be rather ferocious to those who didn't know him, but deep down he was misunderstood and a big softy under all that front! Took a long time to gain his trust and respect, but worth it to say the very least. As you say, Nancy was your companion and have to say he was mine. Hard even nearly 6 months on thinking about him without shedding a tear. But thanks to you and this vlog, openly talking about this helps others, including me. So I'm very grateful to you for sharing your story of Nancy and how it has impacted you losing her. It's very hard as you know. I miss my boy so much still, and always will. But know I gave him my all and he in turn did the same for me. I guess what I am trying to say, is I see in your vlog how raw the emotion is and how completely devastated you are and empathise with your loss. You said in an early vlog that you want to leave the world a better place or something along those lines, and I can't agree more. Kudos to you being Vegan, I've been a fellow Vegan for 7 years now. So it's always so reassuring to see others out there that share my ethos, compassion and empathy for animals and the world. You also said that you want to buy or rent land, and that's also on my list. Amazing that RUclips can have it's pros after all! As it's so nice to see there are others out there that share my views, goals, etc. as your channel just randomly popped up on my recommended list. Most probably because I watch a lot of narrowboat, van life and off grid type channels. Anyway, less of the rambling on. Just wanted to say hello. From Derbyshire, Luke. ✌️

      Hey Luke, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos ☺️ that’s so interesting you live on a narrowboat, I have recently been wondering about it myself, but as I’ve never been on one it’s hard to know if I’d like it! Did you know a lot about boats before doing that? I’m so sorry you lost your boy. It’s such a hard thing to get over, it’s now been a couple of months since I lost Miss Nancy and I’m not really feeling much better. I am glad this video had helped a bit, thanks for sharing your story with me to it’s been really helpful to me as well hearing from people who understand how I feel 🙏 Glad to meet a fellow vegan too, I sometimes feel like the only one as none of my family/friends do the same. glad you found the channel anyway I guess YT does sometimes know what it’s doing! ✌️

    • @Luke-zo6nc
      @Luke-zo6nc 3 месяца назад

      @@missnancysdayoff Hey. Thank you for your response. I'm sure you'd like narrowboat life, it's kind of vanlife on water but with more space and the option to travel around the canal and river networks. Nothing like mooring up in the middle of the countryside. Living on a boat for me is what I've been searching for, and no, I had never been on boats, nor knew anything about them until I moved aboard mine. I wanted to do vanlife (still do) but decided to go for a boat. Ultimately if like a small plot of land so I can be self sufficient. That's the plan someday! 🙏. Yes losing an animal companion is hard, as they aren't always just an animal if you know what I mean. More a family member. I said I would not get another dog now since losing him, but really do miss the company of a dog. Yes, always good to see fellow Vegan folk out there and meet them. They are a rare species, but do exist. Most of my family are vegan, so for me I know many. Anyway less of the rambling! 👀🤣. All the best. ✌️

Sharing your grief has made a difference. The world of Greyhound Rescue has felt that difference. Folk have been made to feel different about how they think and feel about rescue greyhounds. This is what my wife and I consoled ourselves with after Kat and Andy crossed over the rainbow bridge.. #adoptdontshop #greyhoundrescue

    I really feel for you right now as we've been through it too. We lost our first family dog and it was so hard. She looked after our children as they grew but sadly couldn't be with us long enough. But she was so loved, always, and still is. We made a box frame with photos, trinkets and a list we wrote of all the memories she built with us. We will never forget her. We also knew we had to rescue another dog and she is also perfect. Staffies are so misunderstood. You said you would consider another rescue and I would go for it. It's not disrespectful to Nancy at all - she'd want you to be happy but also to be caring for another four legged friend.
    Glad you've got out and that you are in such an awesome area for doing so. Also glad you have your sister and it's clear you have a great relationship - cherish that.
    You've got the right attitude, strong, brave, caring, sharing and thoughtful. Don't change. Keep on trying, looking for positives but not losing the caring side. You won't forget Nancy, the pain won't ever fully go but that's OK - it means you loved each other so much.
    As for going forward - do what makes you happiest, lifes too short to not do that. Volunteering is good, being outside is awesome... but you know all this because you're amazing, even if you don't appreciate that. We see it.

      Thank you so much this is such a kind and sweet message ☺️ I have all Miss Nancys things around me and it does bring me some comfort. A little box of her fur 😖. Staffies are misunderstood for sure I don’t know them well but a friends has a couple and they are super sweet. I’ve just always been drawn to long legged dogs myself!

    It's an absolutely awful process of grieving when you lose a beloved and treasured dog. You'll go places where you've had happy memories except now you're alone. You'll see other greyhounds out and about. You'll immediately want to go over and stroke them. I lost my Meg over 3 years ago and I still have thoughts of "I wish she was still here". I had a favourite photo of her made into a lovely canvas so when I look at it I now smile..
    I think anyone who has lost an animal can fully understand what you're going through. In time that ache will ease I promise you. Xxx

      I have been staring at other pointy dogs I have seen out desperately wanting to just go and say hello to them, probably been looking a bit strange. But Miss Nancy ❤️ Meg was obviously such a special girl. I think you will always wish she was there, the canvas is lovely, when i am ready I will definitely be putting up many pictures of Miss Nancy. Thank you xxx

    I feel your pain , I lost my little border terrier ,3 weeks after moving to Cornwall after spending every day together for 14 and a half years .
    So I was all alone without my best friend and it was hard . This will be the fifth year without her and I still miss her every day . I found it helps to visit the places we used to walk together and remember her . My thoughts are with you .

      Probably too late for this year, but Parish Walk in the Isle of Man is a great challenge, one you'd have to spend a year training for. The island is so beautiful - your scenery there reminds me of it. I guess John O'Groat's to Land's End is another that you could do over a period or weeks or months.
      Toppers are fun, if you like sailing.

    I remember loosing my 1st dog - I cried for ages. I'd 'adopted' him when I got married as he was the wife's dog. Such a scamp but we both loved him and he flew back with us when we came back to the UK from the US. We had another year with him before he passed but I know he'll be waiting for me when it's my time to go. Took quite a while to get over loosing him but we've now got a lovely retired greyhound - a grey, just like Miss Nancy - such a lovely dog - we feel truly blessed to be her parents now. Going to take her on a road trip to the Highlands of Scotland sometime this year so she can go on hikes and run along empty sandy beaches. Life's so short, go on a road trip somewhere, money isn't everything.
