Like finasteride, once you stop saw palmetto the benefits will stop - so if you have a tendency to hair thinning that will start back up again. But it sounds like you don't have hair loss in your family (particularly your mother's father's side?) it should not be a problem for you. 2. No, if you stop saw palmetto it just reverts to your baseline. 3. Actually, it sounds like you are doing a great job with fish oil and saw palmetto! I'm a big believer in getting nutrients from your diet rather than supplements if possible. If you want to take a men's multivitamin that contains zinc, vitamin d and iron - that will help your hair. I don't have a particular brand preference, but you get what you pay for with supplements. Fish oil has great omega 3 content, which is great for your hair, so nice choice there.

Hey Dr.Sam As I have used saw palmetto for let's say 4 months, I can assure that it does work!! for me, I have hair loss plus hair roots pain since 3 years (Pain and hair loss are in parallel) while all dermatologists failed to diagnose my case cause I went for Saw palmetto and wow it really decrease the pain, and as the roots pain decreased the loss is slowed down. *Hence: unfortunately my case is still undiagnosed correctly, and no medication gave me the Saw palmetto results.

I will go a step further: no one would even do such a study because there are two types of 5AR enzyme, type I and II, involved in the conversion of testosterone to DHT, and saw palmetto, at best had some blocking ability of 5AR type II IN VITRO, not in vivo...So, you can obviously see my problem why there are no real studies, and why 99.9999% of people can't see improvements with serenoa repens... The problem doesn't end at enzyme level...obviously or genes, but starts at the gene expressions, or epigenetics... I hope you know what I mean? :-)

You may want to read the Centrum multivitamin ingredient list and do some research about what exactly are all those fillers and colors and where are the cheap ingredients sourced from. I know that it's a lot of work, but you owe it to yourself to find the highest quality supplements (you may have to pay a little more too).

Hi there, completely up to you. You could use Biotin and Fish oil initially, add in Saw Palmetto. There isn't particular rules on when you should start and stop these in relation to Minoxidil.

Hi there, your question is a wee bit tricky. I'd first check to make sure your thyroid levels are ok and TSH is nice and stable. You could have a general hormone check at the same time to see what your FSH is doing? It's always best to double check as assumptions are easy to make about cause. But in terms of trying saw palmetto, I don't think I'd have many objections, in terms of interactions with levothyroxine. If anything Saw Palmetto may reduce estrogen which may or may not cause you symptoms.
don’t the studies suggest it’s half as effective as Finasteride. Which doesn’t mean anything other than. They haven’t done enough studies, to reach a true enough conclusion

Hi Sam. Just going off topic here.... Do you know if the amino acid l arginine causes hair loss. Would like to incorporate it while taking dutasteride.
I found a 2019 review article (www.karger.com/Article/FullText/492035) that said: "However, there are no studies that support arginine supplementation for the treatment of hair loss. Overall, the data regarding the use of amino acids to treat hair loss is limited." I read other blogs where there is talk about the association with hair loss, but I can't find the original papers. It's up to you! It's probably fine to take it, but no evidence that it will help.

It also thins the blood. If you’re on a blood thinner talk to your doctor first.

Hello Dr Sam, I agree with you. I tried saw Palmetto for HL and I had to stop URGENTLY because I was feeling nauxious and woke up in the middle of the night throwing up. the fact that it has an impact on DHT level and thus on the brain (don remember the exact name of the hormone hypophysis?)...this is not for me ..

You may want to read the Centrum multivitamin ingredient list and do some research about what exactly are all those fillers and colors and where are the cheap ingredients sourced from. I know that it's a lot of work, but you owe it to yourself to find the highest quality supplements (you may have to pay a little more too).

Hi there, completely up to you. You could use Biotin and Fish oil initially, add in Saw Palmetto. There isn't particular rules on when you should start and stop these in relation to Minoxidil.
If your hair loss is not caused by DHT then saw palmetto won't do anything
if your hair loss cause by DHT then Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH aka Saw Palmetto in 480mg with Bamboo Extract (70% organic silica), fish oil and biotin with Green Tea extract and Pea Sprout Extract will work wonders for you. if you're in initial stage of alopecia.
I have saw palmetto in capsule form, powdered I think. Is this effective? Or does it have to be in some other form like tablet or softgel?
No. She said it must be extract in dosage 320 mg. So no powder, berries and so on. Extract only.

Anything's possible, I'm not sure if you would get the effect you are after. I don't like mixing meds too much, just because of interactions and not knowing what is causing what. On the flipside, I don't think it would cause much harm.

Yes, they are helpful. I'm always a little wary of how much people spend on these medicines, and also being careful of "too many" vitamins causing hypervitamintosis. But otherwise, it's all good :)

For every study that says saw palmetto, stinging nettle, etc... are NOT effective, there is a study that says they ARE effective! so frustrating...

It mentions the most frequently reported adverse events are abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, fatigue, headache, decreased libido and rhinitis.
I wouldn't trust many of these studies funded by corrupt pharma industry. Remember AHA backed study that showed coconut oil being bad for your health and olive oil good? Turns out coconut industry didn't fund American Heart association so they were fked. People in Karela eat coconut oil all day and have the highest life expectancy in india.

Hi there, your question is a wee bit tricky. I'd first check to make sure your thyroid levels are ok and TSH is nice and stable. You could have a general hormone check at the same time to see what your FSH is doing? It's always best to double check as assumptions are easy to make about cause.
But in terms of trying saw palmetto, I don't think I'd have many objections, in terms of interactions with levothyroxine. If anything Saw Palmetto may reduce estrogen which may or may not cause you symptoms.

Hi Sam. Just going off topic here.... Do you know if the amino acid l arginine causes hair loss. Would like to incorporate it while taking dutasteride.
I found a 2019 review article (www.karger.com/Article/FullText/492035) that said: "However, there are no studies that support arginine supplementation for the treatment of hair loss. Overall, the data regarding the use of amino acids to treat hair loss is limited." I read other blogs where there is talk about the association with hair loss, but I can't find the original papers. It's up to you! It's probably fine to take it, but no evidence that it will help.
