    Pretty cool the way Shon picked up the meaning of the song after just the first couple of verses. This performance was being filmed at Shepperton Studios near London for a movie by The Who called "The Kids Are Alright". In the studio next to where this was being filmed, the movie "Alien" was being filmed. The cast and crew of "Alien" took a break and went to watch The Who concert in the studio next door. They liked the laser show at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again so much, they ended up borrowing The Who's laser equipment and used it in the movie "Alien". So next time you're watching Alien, be sure to keep an eye out for The Who's lasers!

    Great song but would recommend the studio version first. I really like their early stuff from the 60's-70's. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century & have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "My Generation", "Magic Bus", "Substitute", "I Can See For Miles", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Baba O'Riley", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Pinball Wizard" etc.

    Did you know that The Who also provided the title songs for the original CSI ("Who Are You"), CSI:Miami ("Won't Get Fooled Again") and CSI:New York (Baba O'Reilly")? It's actually what sold me into watching the series -- any producer who'd choose one of my favorite bands from my early teens was all right in my books. 🙂

    The smashing up of the instruments at the end signifies perfectly the message of the song. It's a song driven by anger and frustration. This is one of The Who's finest tracks, and they all give it their very best here in front of an adoring live audience, and live music is always the best (for me). Pete Townshend (lead guitar, backing vocals & songwriter) Roger Daltrey on lead vocals, the greatest ever rock bass guitar John Entwhistle (RIP) and the legendary drummer, Keith 'animal' Mood (RIP) were one of the UK's greatest rock bands of the '70's and '80's. Check out their brilliant hit. 'Baba O'Reilly' too if you can Shon. God bless.

    Guitarist is Pete Townsend, that's a Gibson Les Paul, arguably the greatest electric guitar ever made; he beat the ever loving dog snot out of his guitars; that guitar likely didn't survive; and that drummer is Keith Moon, absolute madman, truly, his crazy stories are legendary...like driving cars into pools and blowing up his drums, live on national TV, with too much gun powder (it's on YT)...madman!

    The guitar Pete Townsend is playing is a Gibson Les Paul. If you watch the full concert movie, you'll see a number on each Les Paul because each one is either specially tuned for one song or set up for a specific sound. He has multiple Les Pauls that he uses. I have been to 3 Who concerts at Madison Square Garden going back to the mid-1970s. I also play guitar and can play Who songs.

    At least in Germany, the tv series "CSI" uses songs of The Who as theme songs. The song "Won't Get Fooled Again" is the theme song of "CSI - Miami", while "Who Are You?" is played on "CSI - Las Vegas". And then we have "CSI - New York" with the track "Baba O'Riley" by the Who.

    The Who was one of the top bands in the world of Rock and Roll at this time, put on a great show with theatrics as much a component as their music. There were many sad and controversial components to their story though, The drummer, who was fun to watch, but crazy as a loon did not make it to his 28th birthday, dyeing of a heroin overdose. If you want to see another iconic example of them in their prime, watch the video for the song, Magic Bus. They were right up there back then with Cream, The Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. but, I remember they preferred to play in England and to audiences in Europe. They were very big though and made a lot of money and gave a hellluva show when they showed up.

    That guitar is a Gibson Les Paul but on the studio version, he wound up playing a Gretsch given to him by Joe Walsh. Pete Townshend , the guitarist , said a guitar that is great live and for the stage is much different than when they were in the studio. The Chet Atkins Gretsch guitar was the perfect studio guitar to record this song

    • @joescott8877
      @joescott8877 7 месяцев назад +1

      Wow, apparently Joe Walsh was really into giving cool guitars to his fellow musicians, lol! I think he turned Jimmy Page on to Les Pauls by giving him one of those right after Zep's debut album! Good call on that!

      @mojorider8455 7 месяцев назад +1

      @joescott8877 I always thought he was using the Gibson SG on "Who's Next", but Pete said it was really this Gretsch that did it for the studio. Which are overlooked guitars if you ask me, the pick ups on the guitars are not just for country. Pete proved that! 🙂

    Several people have said you should listen to the studio version first, which might be good from a purely musical aspect, but The Who are a very visual band and half the pleasure of watching them is to laugh and smile at Moon the Loon on drums ( Keith Moon is widely accepted to have been the inspiration for Animal in The Muppet Show), and to wish you had been there watching them live.

    • @blitz3643
      @blitz3643 7 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed but we're watching that as fans who already know the song. For someone listening for the first time I definitely think the studio version would be the right way to go imo.

      I really can't decide in this case as both have their advantages - I often think reactors need to do the original studio version, a good live video, and then for some artists another live video when the artist is much older - thinking of Simon and Garfunkel, Heatwave, Boz Scaggs, Madness and many old soul acts from Motown, Stax etc

    • @blitz3643
      @blitz3643 7 месяцев назад

      @@samolevski1119Most reactors don't do more than 1 version of a song (there are exceptions of course) so I've always felt they would get the true sound of the song by doing studio. It also enables them to hear the lyrics easier and follow what the song is actually about. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference.

    Part of a killer rock concert in the late '70s was the light show. Lasers were fairly new. That what you saw. Checkout Blue Oyster Cult. They had the best laser show by far until the government stepped in and stopped it for fear of burning out someones eyeball.

  • @davidburton9136
    @davidburton9136 7 месяцев назад

    To answer your question, I think Pete Townshend was playing a heavily modified Gibson Les Paul here. On the studio version of this song, I have read that he played a Gretsch Country Gentleman, which even by the name you wouldn't think would have a great rock sound, but it does! You won't be disappointed if you decide to check the studio version...or any other song on that epically great album that featured this song, "Who's Next". That album doesn't have anything but great songs.

    Glad this popped up in my feed. Yeah I think you got most of it. And it's really something just to see how much energy they had and I don't know if you caught it, but Rodger Daltrey the lead singer, he was swinging that microphone around by the cable in the most dangerous and destructive way, and yet it fit with the energy of it and I've seen other live performances of this and it's always different. It's not like the same thing every time. That whole album and their live performance of it really kind of opened the door for all kinds of things.

    Guitar player wrote most of their stuff. What if... Someone reacted to concert AND studio versions of iconic songs?! You heard it here first!

    Shon, ask your parent's what songs or groups they bumped in their cars as early adults. Do some reactions on a few of their favorites.

    The guitar brand never mattered because it was likely to get destroyed in concerts. He and the drummer Keith Moon the Loon broke a LOT! Add in Keith destroying hotel room and pools as well ) They are on the top list of my bands forever!

      Roger tells the story of Keith Moon driving his Rolls Royce through the front door of their hotel up to the reception desk and asking for his room key !
      And Pete tells how he was relaxing in his room when the wall was smashed through and Keith’s head appeared in the hole, asking if he fancied a drink!!!
      Epic rock’n’roll behaviour!

    #replay Best ever rock scream at the end there. I prefer them live to the studio recordings, incredible power & energy they have. Check out a live version of Baba O'Riley, it's❤‍🔥

    If you're into that song and you watch old TV (old, OLD TV) It's the theme for CSI Las Vegas I believe.

    Hey Shon, big fan of The Who... Great reaction and you did a great job on your first listen. And your totally right about their being a deeper message in the lyrics. This is a "rock anthem" and is about the futility of political revolutions and how they fail to bring about any real political change. Here's another suggestion, if interested. The Who - Behind Blue Eyes (1971)" (Live) (by the channel: fkwk101)

    The sound is more determined by the guitar player than the guitar being played. Hendrix or Van Halen or Pete here will sound like themselves on just about anything they pick up.

    Bunch of people saying just how cool and influential this band was/is; these cats are still considered one of the loudest live bands in the history of live concerts, in fact, there are noise volume laws at most venues now that prohibit the volume these crazy mf's reached, like 125 db+, which is like standing next to a commercial jet airliner as it takes off, like hearing damage level volume, frr

    What you are hearing from Pete Townshend is a customized Les Paul through old school tube amps cranked up to full volume. The Who were known as the loudest rock band in history, regularly playing at an average of 110dB - i.e. permanent ear damage levels. There are some sounds from a guitar that you can only get at stupid big volume and he did it. And he didn't give a F#@4 about the guitar or its materiality - Just eff it. He played the music and left it out there.
