Back on the 360, there was a version of internet explorer supported.
When I was in high school, we had an online course management system, where we could complete some of our quizzes and tests online and view our grades. (This was in 2013, before all the remote learning we see today)

5:40 - that's because of the app is running in a vm and when you switch xbox apps, you effectively turn off or put the web browser vm to sleep and then turn on the gaming vm or other app vm you choose. And same thing goes to peripherals, the hypervisor just shares peripherals and when you shut off the vm for web browsing, it disconnects the peripherals in use. And if it didn't, it can lead to some security complications imo.
I think it also serves for the purpose of saving memory. Modern browsers consume tons of memory. The same reason it does not support extensions.

OSRS 🔥
RS3 has to be one of the most surprisingly demanding games, but can also be ran on a potato
The Xbox is still using its apps (like the browser) in a closed sandbox environment, meaning each app has to be active to enable apps specific features such as peripherals. This was implemented to both protect the user from potential online treats such as having some kind of hack/pluging tools take over the controls of the XBox (or recording inputs outside of the apps) from within the browser as well as allowing the OS to be protected from potential intrusion.

About that "switching apps makes them go in suspend mode": Xbox One had Snap Mode and it worked flawlessly. Yes, the usable screen estate was smaller, but we were able to watch YT while playing a game... Why drop that functionality??
The Xbox reserving hardware to support snap functionality limited performance on the underpowered base Xbone. Devs asked to override that feature to hit performance targets, and as soon as it was allowed everyone did it.
I think the Xbox series X can have 2 processes running but I don't have one to test it. His discord only dropped when he was downloading 2 things.
Overhead would probably be more manageable these days on the current systems but developers REALLY don't like reserved hardware restrictions and would fight tooth and nail for Microsoft to remove them again. So it'd end up being pointless.
That takes me back to yelling “Xbox snap party!” at my Kinect even though it was faster to just use the controller lamo.
I used to use snap to listen to YT while playing minecraft
The Logitech K400 is a real soldier. Mine's still going strong after two years, only had to change the batteries twice.
I had to fix the power switch before I had to change batteries lol. Such a solid piece of tech.
@@DerrickRG To be fair this is one of the cheapest KB/mouse combos out there. You can definitely find a better one, but the K400 is almost half the price of an actual Xbox controller so its a good option
Logitech's products really have some good battery life. i have a 10 dollars wireless mouse from Logitech and the battery life just feels endless!
Same. Been using it for about 2 years. Occasionally the sensor froze but you can fix this by turn on/off the keyboard
I bought Microsoft's version of it a couple years ago because it was prettier and had a larger trackpad. But I bought it for my laptop and I was sad to learn that on a laptop you can't use the keyboard and trackpad at the same time...
Well to be honest, i believe in having an arm based laptop, and being able to play from cloud via a browser, that's way more appealing than having to browse the web on a machine that can game lying in the tv cabinet.
And I belive not having to rely on a remote server. Service as a Software Subsitude is evil.
Or maybe just use your console to play games, because that's what they are optimized for
Retroarch works great on XSX too btw, it's not the most user friendly but it works ... also PPSSPP works flawlessly, playing GOW on Xbox is great! It's an emulation beast on the quiet.
Same, I have a PS5 and I bought a Series S just for emulation and to play old games via backwards compatibility, plus I can play any exclusives they gonna release in the future.
About the emulators: Click on the middle of the screen once you go fullscreen. Then it won't interrupt anymore
So the Xbox can now play “Wave Racer 64” but the Switch still can’t 😂
It runs retroarch so it can basically run every single console made before the 7th gen.
I remember on the browser there was an option on the top of the screen to 'activate gamepad controls' and it cancelled the other inputs for the browser until you pressed the menu button twice.

@@lejacobo Netscape Navigator says hi
Until recently, Microsoft was working on Windows 10X (earlier focused on dual screen devices, but later changed to become a web-os alternative to Chrome OS), but they apparently scrapped the plans.
Microsoft has worked on a lot of things that never saw the light of day. or where ignored.
chrome os is a GNU/Linux distro with a funny GUI so actually if you enable developer mode and open a terminal and start typing commands you can install a fully hardware accelerated normal GNU/Linux GUI and then switch between it and the default chrome os UI using Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Arrow keys the tool to do this quickly is called crouton.Technically you can do the same thing with android devices but a lot of proprietary hardware drivers for phones are in Android userspace, while most chromebooks are very similar to normal laptop hardware, so the drivers in the kernel work with normal GNU/Linux userspace drivers. so it much easier in practice to use normal GNU/Linux GUI with a chromebook without reinstalling the entire operating system and have full hardware acceleration, while on my android phone my GNU/Linux chroot cannot access GPU and Linux distros for phones cannot access its GPU either because the proprietary motherboard has not been reverse engineered enough to enable this

I've been wondering how long it would be before Microsoft fully inserted the Xbox into the PC gaming market as the "super-budget entry level pre-built" system. Hopefully they keep improving this and then just eventually ship Xbox's with a OS that's a stripped down version of Windows
they'll never do that because it would mean having a device that does multiple functions in one
they'd rather just sell you an additional pc/surface instead
"Xbox's with a OS that's a stripped down version of Windows"
What do you think this is? In any case, you don't want a console that's trying to be a lamer PC.
unfortunately that won't happen anytime soon, or OEMs would have their heads on a platter.
Xbox needs to be less like an entry level PC, not more. The only reason to get a Series X is if you can afford something more than a Series S but can't afford a basic PC. So by extension, if you already have a PC, then Xbox is completely irrelevant to you.
@@ryanspencer6778 well I have a nice gaming pc I spent around 1200 on and I got a series s and I love it although I got my Xbox to keep at my moms house because my parents are divorced and now I can play games on my Xbox and then go play my pc at my dads and it will carry over my progression but I also have a very special use case I guess but I love my series a so worth the 300 dollars
They'll likely never optimize consoles to a level of being a fully functional PC, unless they raise the price. They sell consoles at a loss, selling something that's too close to a PC would disrupt the entire market for many of their business partners
Sony don't sell them at a loss
@@jtlast9600 guess the PS5 isn't sold at a loss anymore but it's not a very high profit margin, from what we know it costs $450 to make a ps5 then retailers need to make money too. The principal is the same the money maker is games not the console

Someone learned their lession from jailbreaking of older consoles with those features.

I have a decent PC and 200+ chrome tabs doesn't crash it... I tested it many, many times. That's just how I browse... Sure, it takes up 16+GB of my RAM, but I can still game just fine with 200+ tabs in the background. As long as you have enough RAM, you are good.
Console might have problems. However, a full function PC with enough memory can handle several hundreds of tabs without issue.
My work PC regularly has 350+ tabs open (yay multitasking demands). No sleeping tabs, and everything operates the same as if I had 3 tabs open. Only difference is on startup of Edge it occasionally crashes if you have that many tabs reloading at once. But once it’s up and running and restore recently closed tabs it’s business as usual with those 350+ tabs open across ~6 windows and 15 or so other apps up and running. With the amount I get randomized at work there’s a lot of context switching that has me actively using all those apps and tabs in a typical week, so they’re not usually open just for the sake of being open.

Reminds me of back in the day when I discovered Sega Dreamcast has a internet connection for a browser
11:59 Well you see, microsoft used to have a file explorer on Xbox which allowed you to OOTB, browse through a "user folder-like" folder and save files to that folder. With third party apps, it allowed you to access the hidden game files, allowing modding. Microsoft then - in their infinite wisdom - removed file explorer completely.
"Now Xbox is a PC"
It always was, it's just minutely less nerfed than before
They are worried that it would cannabilize their pc sales. They should just sell windows license for like 100 bucks so they still get their windows license money and they can market the xbox as a the all in one gaming and work platform. Advertise it as a kid doing their homework or finishing up a project and then goes to play their xbox games all on the same platform. Even a super nerfed windows version would be appreciated.
@@jsteezus fyi, win10 gaming merged with xbox a few years ago. Technically the xbox studio is shrinking to eventually not exist anymore. Don't be surprised in 5 years when xbox and PS don't exist and these companies just sell mini ITX builds, lol. Valve knows the future and they are already making hardware for that future.
@@evolicious I forsee "playstation" and "xbox" becoming essentially just the game publishing wings of their respective companies. The age of the "killer release" that makes people choose your console are dead and gone. It's more profitable to sell on all platforms. And these newest consoles are already basically just itx sized pcs with a custom os, and yes, i agree that trend will continue. The controllers will be the only part they custom design.
@@evolicious yeah they'll become streaming services
@@jsteezus OK, guys. This isn't gonna fucking happen.
Why? In four words, game and app security. The minute Microsoft opens up the console as a full PC is the minute that others will find ways to break into the console and play backup or pirated copies of games and cheat in games online and offline. Notice how just the browser alone is heavily sandboxed. That isn't an accident or a beta fluke or whatever, and unless Microsoft somehow pulls some magical way out of their ass to allow users to access the full console without compromising security, you can expect that restriction to remain until the end of the XSX's life.
With that said, you don't want consoles becoming another PC anyway. That's not where a console's strength lies. You can add media center features to it, sure, but trying to make it like a PC would be a huge mistake for everyone.

PWAs could be really interesting on Xbox.
Installing an Edge-based webapps as standalone Xbox apps (assuming proper background multitasking support) seems like a fairly polished way to get some awesome functionality.

I'm sure I've seen people with windows 95 running in a web browser. definitely windows 3.1
I had Linux on the original Xbox and the 360... Give it time
Not gonna happen until they find a way to access the full hardware without restriction. Which, for the XSX, is very very unlikely.
I think they have disabled the ability to keep browsers awake due to the one and one s only having 8gb of ram. The series s has 10, the one X had 12, and the series X has 16. So maybe they’ll figure out a way to do it without taking up too much ram
They restrict the amount of ram on all the consoles. It's not like PC where apps can use all the available RAM. For example, Series X has 16GB total, 10GB for games, 2.5GB system and 3.5GB for apps and games. This means games can use up to 13.5GB but doing so will suspend the app. You can see this because some games will kill apps while others do not.
@@alasdair_cooper Are you sure? It's a mistake to reserve that amount of memory for other than games. The console should free all memory once a game is booted.
Linus when you hold the the stat button to play a game on edge you can put on game mode so you can play games With no scrolling
In my book, after a company stops selling a game, Piracy and roms/emulation is 100% A-OK, its not like you can buy it anyway
This is what really fucks me off with Nintendo. They have such an amazing history of titles and they shit on people who want to preserve and enjoy these games while also providing ZERO alternative. They're probably one of the most tone deaf companies out there. They could print cash but they choose not to.
piracy is a right and a deterrent against corporate, besides if your game is good then people who have the money will buy it cause it is more convenient to own something online. Why like mess with people's financial state...

The Xbox Series X has better and more powerful CPU and GPU, it's more quiet, it's smaller than the literal crap called PS5 and has actually next gen-features like QuickResume, Auto HDR, FPS Boost for BC games, Bigger storage space, better games, can do 1440P unlike (PoS5), has lightyears better game subscription service than CrapStation 5 and it can actually do 4K with 60FPS/120FPS and last but least XSX’s SDD is waaaay faster than the Ponystation 5’s glorified HDD.

I used to browse the internet on PS3 with the built in web browser. That is how I downloaded all of my sick backgrounds to set as my XMB wallpaper. RUclips still runs on the PS3 web browser, but most of the newer sites will not load at all. Its kind of in a limbo state of being on its last leg and functioning just fine. My guess is that in about 5-10 years the PS3 web browser will no longer be able to open any websites as they will all move to newer versions and eventually Google wont open on it. Its still fun to open it and look at a PS5 through the PlayStation website on a PS3.

You can bring your own ROMs for emulation. You just need to host the emulator yourself... which you could do on your PC, or a Raspberry Pi or something
A smartphone could host the web pages and game files.
It's still a hassle to depend on a second device, because it has the muscle to make everything by itself. Just not worth it, definitely it's not a PC as the title video says.
i was so shocked when he said runescape, i am literally playing oldschool runescape right now!! lol

Sad thing. Here in Spain Logitech did see that this models ( i think they had the dedicated dongle one and the "harmony" dongle one ) were eating at their sales of wireless keyb+mouse combos. They pulled out both models and returned with only the harmony one at more than double the price.
FWIW, the RUclips app on Xbox now *does* have chapter select. Though you nonetheless make a strong argument that using RUclips on the browser on Xbox still has certain advantages. I've been using the RUclips app, and I should probably experiment with RUclips in the browser more to make a better comparison of which is better than the other for what situations.

So to get emulated games to run properly at full screen, you must have a mouse plugged in. You use the Xbox controller outside of the emulated games window, press start, and press "Use game controls". From there, use your mouse to open the full screen function.
